The next few weeks went by quickly for Percy as he worked with Mr. Crouch. He did like his job, even if his boss could not remember his name. But then there was Audrey, she popped in every now and then, and even started coming over at lunch to work with him too. She was nice and very much a hard worker with similar work ethics to himself.
Though he would admit to himself as to being a little jealous of her, it seems Mr. Bagman had more faith in Audrey than Mr. Crouch had in him. Audrey was allowed to make some decisions on her own without having to run back to Mr. Bagman every time. One of these days he planned on asking Audrey about this, but he was not quite sure how to just yet.
Outside of work he was having some problems with Penny, his girlfriend. She was on holiday with her family, and she could not be bothered to write to him or contact him in any other way either. Well that was not entirely true, after he had sent that letter, on the day Audrey got him a Butterbeer, she did send a little note back. It was just small little ‘Sorry I was excited about things’ mostly, but even now she seems reluctant to write to him.
To be fair though, Percy was busy too, tomorrow he had off though it was Monday. That was Percy’s birthday and the day of the Quidditch world, he was excited over this. He was also excited that he was going be working Mr. Crouch on the rebirth of the Tri-wizard Tournament. Percy was even happy to learn that Audrey would be helping Mr. Bagman with this tournament too. He had grown to think of her as a friend.
But his birthday would not turn out as planned, the game was awesome, but it was everything after the game that was not. Death Eaters had shown up at the game, it was frightful and many people were scared. When Percy was home and safe he could not help being glad that Penny was off in another country then instead of at the game; also oddly glad that Audrey had not been there either.
The next day at work everyone was saying it was just some old excited drunks, but it was still causing a ruckus at the Ministry. There was lots of commotion and officials running back and forth. It took a few days to calm down, and when it had Percy realized even his mother forgot to make his birthday cake. That’s a big deal since Mrs. Weasley was all about love and cooking.
He was at his desk thinking about this on the Thursday, the 26th, when lunch time came. First Mr. Crouch left, but Percy stayed to work more on the paper work for the Tri-Wizard Tournament, but then he heard the door open again. He figured it was Audrey for they near daily lunch together, so he didn’t even look up right away.
“Hello Audrey, having a good day?” Percy said without looking up but then a chocolate cupcake with red icing and a single yellow candle already lit was placed infront of him. This caused Percy’s eyes to open and to look up to see Audrey.
“Happy belated birthday!” Audrey said to him sitting in the chair she normally sits in. “Go on make a wish!”
“That’s childish.” Percy said. “But how did you know?”
“I heard your dad in the cafeteria yesterday.” Audrey said. “And of course it's childish! Your birthday is day to have fun. And yours was kind of ruined.”
“Oh, well thank you.” Percy said thinking about what to wish for. He finally decide on something, to have something bit more, well none poor looking lunch. He picked this since it was something that wouldn’t happen anyway. Then he closed his eyes blew out the candle.
“It should be a good cupcake.” Audrey said. “I made it myself. Well I made a dozen, but mother ate a lot of them. And she said they were good.”
“Well she would say that wouldn’t she, she taught you how to cook.” Percy said assuming this, since his own mother was always teaching Ginny stuff.
“She did not teach me how to cook. My Grandmother taught me.” Audrey said. “Oh and I do have a present for you!”
“Oh?” Percy said looking at her. She took out a bag from her pocket and the suddenly pulled out larger picnic basket.
“I was not sure what you would want so I just made lunch for you.” Audrey said. She opened it and put out containers of several tea sandwiches, cucumber, cheese and tomatoes, and even steak. Then pulled out two Butter Beers and two smaller containers with fruit salads for both of them. “Was not fully sure what you would like.”
“This is good.” Percy was shocked; this was basically what he had wished for. They ate while looking over paper work. He figured now would be a good time to ask her what I wanted to know. “Audrey?”
“Hmm?” Audrey said reading something.
“Why do you work for the Department of Wizarding Games and Sports if you do not like Quidditch?” Percy asked. “Especially to the point that Mr. Bagman let you make certain decisions.”
“I never said that.” Audrey said. “My father was professional Quidditch player. I use to go to his games all the time. But once he was eaten by that Chimera, it is just hard for me to watch any Quidditch match.”
“Oh,” Percy said. “I’m sorry.”
“It was years ago.” Audrey said.
“Wait.” Percy’s eyes widened. “Eaten by a Chimera? Was ‘Dangerous Dai’ your father?” Audrey just nodded. “Wow” Was all Percy could say.
“Yea,” Audrey said. “I’m even supposed to be at the Quidditch Award’s Dinner and present the award named after my father.”
“That is honor, to be only an intern and allowed to go there.” Percy said. “But also to be presenting.”
“Mr. Bagman said everyone who work in the department has to attend.” Audrey said. “But he also keeps pestering me to bring a date or a guest with me.”
“Why not bring your mother?” Percy asked.
“My mother is a muggle.” Audrey told him. “And she does not even know I am a witch.”
“How is that possible?” Percy asked confused.
“It’s a long story.” Audrey said. “Far too long for a lunch story.”
“… Oh.” Percy said, but he was also finding himself wanting to know about this.
“Yeah, and since the Awards dinner was rescheduled till September 9th.” Audrey said. “Mr. Bagman is really on my cause now.”
Percy was thinking about this while they ate more, and he came to a decision. He always knew he wanted to be Minister of Magic someday, and there would be a lot of key people he could meet and greet at the awards dinner. It could also help his friendship with Audrey; he had heard Mr. Bagman state many times that should end up in charge of that department.
“Well if you want, I am free.” Percy said. “Might be nice to have a friend with you.”
“Well…” Audrey said. “As long as your girlfriend won’t be upset and try to attack me or anything.”
“It will be fine.” Percy said. Penny would not be back till the Monday after that.
“Okay.” Audrey said. “I will bring the paper to fill out what you would like for dinner.”
