Beautiful Stranger
Chapter 7
Remus didn't really know what to say. He felt horrible for the entire incident. Charlie was embarrassed, and the werewolf didn't blame him. It had been an embarrassing situation. //He didn't know. He's trying his best.// And now they were going out to eat. Remus hated restaurants. Silverware always proved to be a difficult obstacle to overcome. He had his own wooden set of utensils, but that often raised questions. Gloves were less conspicuous, but still received odd looks. And he had to be careful about the menu. Nothing with onions in it. And he tended to eat his meat rare. Yes, it would be rather obvious what he was, since his presence in Diagon Alley was not a secret.
//Why do I have the feeling this is going to be absolutely awful?// Remus asked himself, allowing Charlie to open and hold the door for him. The dragon master had hastily changed into a dark blue shirt and a clean pair of leather pants. //Why does he have to be so nice?// Things would have been so much easier if Charlie hadn't been such a kind and sweet man. He was, actually, exactly what Remus looked for in a man. Considerate, humorous, intelligent, passionate, and he didn't care a whit about the lycanthropy. //But I can't...I just can't...//
//And why not?// A small voice piped up. //Why can't you take a lover? He's willing. There'd be no harm in it...//
But Remus refused to listen. It was listening to that inner voice that got him in the most trouble. That was the voice that had allowed that incident with Sirius to happen. //But that's not something we want to think about, now is it?//
"I'm really sorry about the chocolate." Charlie was saying. He had an earnest look in his eyes, as though he were trying with every fiber of his body to convince Remus he was sorry. That in itself was a touching gesture.
"Oh, it's all right." Remus placed his hand on Charlie's arm. "Please don't worry about it." He didn't want the red haired man working himself up over the incident. It had been such a sweet gesture...
//How long has it been, since someone treated you like this? In all honesty, no one has treated you in this particular manner ever before. You've never been pursued like this. Not even in school. You like it...// Well, of course he liked it. Who didn't' like being catered to, made to feel special. There weren't many people who went out of their way to make Remus feel special.
Sighing, Remus allowed Charlie to take his hand as they walked down the street. This was a whole new world to him. When it came to relationships, he shied away. It was so much easier that way. Now he felt a bit left out, as though he had missed something important.
"You okay?" Charlie asked, squeezing his hand. It surprised Remus, but he give any sign that it had. //He's such an...an expressive person. He does remind me a bit of Sirius. He has that charisma.//
"Fine." He returned the squeeze, hesitantly. Charlie's hand was strong and calloused, and his fingers caressed Remus' palm lightly. He realized with a start this was something he had never done. Walked down the street, holding hands in an intimate manner. Forget walking down the street, he had never held hands quite like this. Not with it being mutual, at any rate. It was...nice.
//You are playing with fire, Remus.// He was well aware of that. He had come to Charlie looking for help, not...whatever it was he was finding. Though he had to admit that *this* wasn't unwanted. //I shouldn't want this. No, I should want it but I should not pursue it.// Again, that wondering why. Why should he be so careful? He should allow himself some small bit of happiness, and it looked as though Charlie Weasley could offer that happiness.
"Here we are, my dear." Charlie opened the door of the restaurant, bowing as he did so. Remus found himself blushing, bowing his head and mumbling thank you. It was embarrassing, but not in a bad way. He certainly didn't want it to stop. Charlie placed an arm around his waist, hand resting casually on his hip. Apparently now that Remus hadn't told him to sod off that he was open to whatever it was Charlie had in mind. Remus bristled at the look the maitre'd gave them, but didn't say anything.
"Weasley, party of two." Charlie said, with that insufferable grin of his.
"Mmmm." The miter's said, still looking down his nose at them. Remus took a deep breath. If Charlie wasn't going to be bothered by it, he as determined not to let it get to him either. He could deal with prejudice. Bur he did think Charlie was pushing it when he pulled out his chair for him. They were given a rather secluded table, but Remus had the feeling that was more to shield them from the rest of the restaurant then for their benefit.
"Your waiter will be with you shortly." The maitre'd said crisply. he gave them their menus and walked away quickly.
"Uptight bastard." Charlie muttered. "You see his face? Oh, that was priceless." He chuckled, opening his menu.
"It really doesn't bother you, does it?" Remus asked, wide eyed and amazed.
"Of course not. I've never cared what people think about me. If I cared, I'd be off playing Quidditch right now." he shrugged. "So...you do realize this is a date, don't you? I really don't want any more confusion..."
"Yes, I am quite aware this is a...date." Remus said, hesitantly. //I've never been on a date before. That's really rather sad. Thirty six years old, and on my first date...//
"Okay." Charlie broke into a relieved grin. "I mean, I was pretty sure, but you can never be too careful. And...you are okay with that, right? I mean, you *are* attracted to guys?"
"Yes, Charlie." Remus had to smile and shake his head at Charlie's bluntness. "I am as attracted to men as I am to women."
"Me to." Charlie frowned down at the menu. "Hmm...haven't been out to eat in a while. I think I'm gonna go with a salad and...the lemon chicken. What about you?"
"Steak." Remus didn't even have to check. He was craving good, red meat. It had been far too long since he had it.
"Good choice." Charlie folded his menu. "So...what was your first experience?"
"Pardon?" Remus' eyes widened in surprise. Charlie couldn't mean...what he though he meant.
"You know, with another guy. I'll tell you mine." Apparently he had meant that. Remus folded his hands, trying to form words. //Well, this is certainly interesting dinner conversation.//
"Er...." Remus attempted to gather his thoughts. His first...and really only experience, hadn't exactly been something to brag about. It had been a moment of weakness, and something he *almost* regretted. Almost, but not quite.
"I'll go first, if it'd make you feel better." Charlie said. Remus only nodded. He was still rather numb in the mind from it all. "It wasn't until I was out in the field. I was stationed in Transylvania with this other guy, Kendrick Silvertail. Nice guy, good friend of mine, real nice looking. That didn't really matter to me at that point. So anyway, we were in bed one night, and I think we were complaining about everything we missed about civilization. This was my first time out in the field. Women came up, and I mentioned it wasn't that bad, we could always get ourselves off, but that got pretty old after a while. Ken said something about there was no reason we had to get ourselves off, and I made some joke about forest critters..."
Remus was simply staring blankly at Charlie. He couldn't believe he was actually hearing this story, that Charlie was actually *telling* it.
"...then he said that wasn't what eh was talking about. There were two of us, it was stupid to have to get ourselves off. I asked him if he meant he wanted to have sex, and he said not necessarily. Blow job, hand job, whatever...is this making you uncomfortable?" Charlie had finally noticed Remus' stricken expression. And of course there was the fact that the werewolf had begun choking on his water at the mention of the words 'blow job'. Remus shook his head, hoping he hadn't offended Charlie. He waved his hand, indicating he should finish the story.
"Well, anyway, we ended up fooling around. I figured why not? He was good looking, and there really wasn't any big deal. No one would know, and it *was* better then taking care of things myself. Haven't looked back since."
"Ah." Remus said, struggling to keep a strait face. //That was...certainly informative.// He took a deep breath. Charlie really didn't seem to have any shame. Luckily, at that point, the waiter showed up.
"May I take your order...sirs?" The same slight sneer that maitre'd had had. Remus took a deep breath, clutching the sides of his menu. Though it was hard to get too upset, after Charlie's little anecdote.
"I'll have a Circe salad and the lemon chicken....with potatoes instead of carrots. He'll have steak....rare, right?" Charlie looked up, and Remus just nodded. //When did I become the woman?// He wondered, meaning to have a word with Charlie when they got back to the apartment.
The waiter nodded, giving Remus an odd look. //Wonderful, it's started already. Oh, this is going to be wonderful.// He left, without a word.
"Well, someone's getting a crappy tip." Charlie muttered. 'SO...your turn."
"Hmm?" Remus blinked, wondering what Charlie was talking about. "Oh!" Of course. His first...experience. "Er...it's really rather embarrassing..."
"That's okay. I won't laugh, I promise."
"Mmm." Remus sighed. It really was only fair, he supposed. But...his first time was a bit different then Charlie's. "Well, it was in school. Seventh year. I was in the dorm, in bed, it it was rather late." He picked at his napkin remembering. "A...a friend of mine, whom I was quite attracted to, had been on a date. He stumbled in, rather drunk. He saw that I was up, and decided he wanted to complain. Apparently his female companion had been...reluctant to...er..."
"Put out?" Charlie supplied, not missing a beat.
“That's as good a way to put it as any, I suppose." Remus said, nodding. "Not surprisingly he was not happy about the turn of events. Er...he was going on at great length about how...excited he was." The werewolf blushed, not believing he was actually telling this story. He could still remember that night quite well. Sirius had stumbled in, rather loudly. Remus was still surprised that no one else in the dorm had woken up. He had collapsed on Remus' bed, and he had had the sense of mine to cast a blanket charm over the bed, so Sirius could complain as loudly as he wanted.
"I never would have...taken the initiative, had he not been *quite* so drunk. He wasn't like...like us. At all." Remus flushed. "I...I offered to...well, to help..." He trailed off into silence. He hoped that would be enough. He couldn't bring himself to add any more. Sirius simply wouldn't shut up about how badly he needed to find release, and Remus couldn't help himself. He had lusted after his handsome friend for years. And to suddenly find him willing in his bed...it had been too much. The young werewolf had shyly offered to help, and Sirius, drunk beyond all rational thought had just nodded. Remus hadn't' done anything stupid, like try and kiss him, he knew that wouldn't have been a good idea. He had simply undone Sirius' pants, and...
"Huh. Did he remember?" Charlie asked. Remus shook his head.
"He most likely chalked it up to a strange dream. I never let on." Remus shrugged. He had gotten a few odd looks the next day, but Sirius had never once said anything.
"I can see why." Charlie leaned back, drumming his fingers on the table. "This is a nice place. But I've seen better. So what else can't you eat?" he said, and Remus was again thrown off by the sudden change of topic.
"Chocolate and onions are it." Remus said. "And I *can* eat both, just not in excess. And it will upset my stomach."
"I feel like a complete shit about earlier." Charlie said, and Remus held up his hand.
"Please Charlie, just leave it." Remus didn't want the red head beating himself up over the incident. "It was a simple mistake. And look at it this way: it at least helped to determine both of our intentions." He smiled, hoping to put Charlie at ease. It looked as though he was going to say something more, but the waiter appeared with their food.
"Your...steak, sir." He said with a curled lip as he placed the dish in front of Remus. Tem werewolf nodded in polite thanks, waiting for the waiter to leave before attempting to actually eat his dinner. The smell wafting up from the undercooked meat was irresistible. He could feel his stomach growling in anticipation.
"Is everything to your satisfaction?" The waiter asked, hovering over the table.
"Yes, thank you." Remus said, nodding once again. Why was he just standing there?
"But sir...you have not even sampled your dish." A sickly smile. Remus gritted his teeth. So, it was going to be like that, was it? He glanced down at the fork and knife next to his plate. He couldn't tell just by looking at them if they were actual silver. //Wonderful. Just wonderful.// He swallowed hard, gritting his teeth. There was really no way around this, and he didn't want to draw any more attention to his...condition. Taking quick shallow breaths, he gingerly picked up the fork, clenching his teeth together hard at the first shiver of pain that shot through him.
//Silver.// He ground his teeth together, fighting not to cry out. It wasn't *that* bad. A burning sensation in his fingers and against his palm. Slowly, painfully, he cut a small bit of steak and raised it to his mouth. His fingers were beginning to blister, and he immediately set down the silverware as soon as the meat was in his mouth. //God, it burns, it burns, it burns...// He clenched his fists tightly, to hide what eh was certain were angry red welts on his fingers and palms.
"Quite good." He forced himself to stay, calm stare meeting the confused and flustered one of the waiter. //Thought you had me, didn't you?// He felt an odd sense of triumph, sadly misplaced he decided. The waiter made a sort of strangled noise before heading off again.
"Cheap place." Charlie commented. "Imitation silver. Who would have guessed."
"It wasn't imitation." Remus said. "Excuse me..." He stood up, still remaining calm. His hands stung now, fiercely. He made his way to the men's room, immediately turning on the cold water and thrusting his hands beneath it. The cold spray felt good on his blistered hands, and he let out a hissing breath. After a few moments, he examined his hands.
//Not too bad...I've been hurt much worse then this.// There were blisters on his fingers at pad and inner knuckle from the fork, and a long welt across the top of his palm from the knife. They were shallow though, and he didn't think they'd scar too badly.
//I hate this. I hate all of this.// Remus bowed his head. He had no real desire to return to the restaurant. In fact, he didn't even want to go home with Charlie. //This was a stupid idea. All of it. I shouldn't have come. What was I thinking...// He felt everything catching up with him. The hardships of the past year, the recent events...was it worth it? Was it really worth it?
"Remus?"
The werewolf whirled around, realizing with a sudden start his eyes were watering. He smile weakly at Charlie, closing his fingers to hide the wounds.
"Remus, are you okay?" Charlie closed the door, a look of concern on his face.
"Fine." Remus assured him, trying to nonchalantly wipe away what little wetness escaped his eyes.
"You didn't have to...damn it Remus...who gives a shit what they think?"
"I do, Charlie." He said the words softly, and Charlie's face fell. He moved forward, holding out his arms, a look of sadness on his face.
"Don't." He said, wrapping his arms firmly around Remus. The werewolf's resolve melted, and he collapsed into the strong arms holding him.
"I can't help it..." He choked out, grabbing at Charlie's shirt. "You've no idea what it's been like..."
"Sh...it's okay. It doesn't matter. They don't matter." Charlie rubbed his back, murmuring soft assurances in his ear.
"God, I'm sorry." Remus pulled away, wiping at the tears that just didn't seem to want to stop. He knew he must look a mess.
"There's nothing to be sorry about." Charlie told him, firmly. His hand came up, finger tracing Remus' cheekbone to brush away tears that had escaped Remus' fervrent attack. He placed his hand under Remus' chin, tilting the werewolf's face up. Remus found himself forced to look into a pair of vibrant blue eyes, clouded over with concern and tenderness. He felt at that moment as though he could break. Simply shatter into a million pieces and scatter. And then Charlie leaned forward, lips brushing oh so gently across Remus', sending electric shots through his body. It wasn't a deep kiss, or a passionate kiss, but it was a *meaningful* kiss. Charlie's lips were a bit rough, but firm and supple nonetheless. He pulled away, and Remus found himself longing for more.
"Charlie..." He mumbled, not able to say anything else. //Dear lord...// Even his thoughts were jumbled and confused. All he could think of were slightly chapped lips that tasted faintly of beer. And a pair of the most beautiful blue eyes he had ever seen...
"Come on...let's finish dinner and get out of here."
