Chapter 7
Hermione went down to breakfast early hoping to avoid Malfoy. She started to eat her eggs, kippers and toast, grateful that few of the Slytherins had troubled themselves to get out of bed yet. When Snape entered the Great Hall and sat at the staff table, Hermione noticed that he eyed her suspiciously. She groaned inwardly, remembering her little show last night and wondering what her potions master thought about it. She couldn't believe herself. She was supposed to be keeping everything secret and she goes swooning right in front of the head of Slytherin house.
Hermione couldn't eat any more. Her stomach clenched up nervously under what she thought was the scrutiny of her potions teacher. She left for the library. She had time to do some research before lessons started. She was so far behind in her classes she despaired of catching up.
Later she met Harry and Ron in History of Magic class. Ron, of course, asked her why she wasn't at breakfast and didn't seem to believe her when she said she'd been down to breakfast early that day. Why did he have to be so suspicious, she lamented. Harry was mostly leaving her alone, which was good. She didn't think she could handle two overly inquisitive friends.
The weather had been growing warmer and the days sunnier as spring emerged at Hogwarts. Today Binns' classroom was pleasantly warm. The ghost was droning on about yet another goblin rebellion as the class sank into its usual state of boredom.
Hermione looked up to see she was somehow suddenly in a corridor. It was dark, she noticed fearfully, and she was alone. Well, not quite alone, she realized with horror as she recognized the disturbingly familiar figure approaching from the gloom.
It was Malfoy. She tried to run but couldn't. Her muscles seemed frozen and her feet wouldn't move. He grabbed her by the arm, twisting it sharply, pushing her down hard on the stone floor. He started groping her body, hurting her. He whispered in her ear, telling her in vivid and horrific detail just what he was going to do to her. She was fighting him, struggling and kicking but it did no good. He was so strong. Wrists held firm in one hand he tore at her clothing with the other, baring her flesh. He pawed at her brutally. His heavy body covered hers, holding her down, pressing her into the cold floor. He forced her legs apart.
Hermione awoke with a screech, hands up, clawing out defensively, her heart racing. Eyes wide, it only took a few moments to realize that it had all been a dream. Only a terrible, horrific dream. It was a great relief to her but she realized that the entire class, including Professor Binns, was staring at her. "Sorry," she muttered, sliding down in her seat, embarrassed. She glanced at Ron who had a strange expression on his face.
Lucky for Hermione class ended just then, and in their rush to get out of Binns' classroom, most of the Gryffindors seemed to forget about her odd display. She grabbed her book bag and hurried from the room, ignoring Ron and Harry who called after her.
Hermione had Arithmancy next, for which she was glad because it meant that Ron and Harry would be out of her way in their Divinations class. She was alert and on edge from the adrenalin of her dream and Arithmancy was her favorite subject, so she didn't fear dozing off again. She was happy to work on some difficult problems in class. It took her mind off everything - at least temporarily. She was back to just study again, without all the pressure of her present situation. It felt good.
Hermione wished she could skip lunch and having to be in the same room as Malfoy but she went to the Great Hall anyway and sat down with Harry and Ron. She dreaded the questions they might have about her actions in class this morning and thought about sitting at the far end of the table for a moment. That would have been a sure sign to them that something was wrong with her, though. It was too risky. She'd just have to deal with things as best she could. She put a smile on her face. It felt fake but she hoped it looked real enough. "Pass the pumpkin juice, please," she said with a cheerful voice as she sat down.
Ron poured her some. "Hermione?" She looked up at him. "Would you mind telling me just what all that was about in Binns' class today."
"Oh, Ron. It was nothing. You know everyone sleeps in Binns' class."
"You don't." Ron said in a matter of fact voice.
"Well, I do sometimes and I did today. I just had a strange dream. There's nothing more to it than that." She hoped fervently that the matter would be put to rest. Starting to eat her lunch, she realized how hungry she was. It would be the first real meal she'd had in days.
"You were screaming. That's not normal. There's something going on with you. I wish you'd trust me. That's all I have to say about it." Ron looked hurt.
"Ron, I'm fine. We've had this conversation before and I don't think we need to have it again. Do you?" Her voice was firm and she concentrated on eating.
Ron started to talk to Harry about Quidditch, for which Hermione was grateful. She could eat in peace. Or at least she had hoped she could. She set her fork down as she saw the blond figure approaching from the Slytherin table. God, what next, she wondered. She couldn't believe it. Malfoy was actually walking right toward her. She didn't know what to do. Should she leave quickly before he got here? or would that look too suspicious? What was he up to?
Before she could decide what to do he was there. He stood across from her and smirked. Ron and Harry looked up. "Clear off, Malfoy." Ron's voice was low and threatening.
"Sorry, Weasley. I have every right to be here."
"What do you want, Malfoy?" Harry asked.
"I just wanted to talk to Granger. About a class. You don't mind, do you Weasley? I'll return your 'girlfriend' to you in a few minutes. She is your girlfriend, isn't she? I hardly ever see you together so maybe I've got it wrong."
"Shut up, Malfoy," Ron said. Hermione was silent, wondering how far this would go.
"How is the bookish Mudblood in bed, then? Does she call out your name when you fuck her?"
Ron stood up quickly. "That's enough, Malfoy. One more word - just one -"
"And you'll what? Attack me right here in front of all the teachers? That would probably get you expelled. Is she worth it? If so she must really be one hot little number. If she's that good I almost envy you, Weasley." He laughed and then added in a low voice, his eyes looking right at Hermione, "Almost."
"Shut up, both of you." Hermione had enough of this. "Ron, please sit down. He's not worth it. If you don't give him the satisfaction of rattling you, he'll stop it." She turned toward Draco. "I'm not going to help you with any class. Please go away." Her manner was stern but she could tell her eyes were giving her away to Malfoy.
"But I need to speak to you, Granger. In private." She could hear the underlying threat in his voice.
"She's not going anywhere with you." Ron stood up.
Hermione grabbed Ron's arm and pulled him down to his seat. "Ron, just sit down. I'm going to go talk to Malfoy..." Ron looked as though he was going to argue with her but she stopped him with a severe look. "Just over there, by the door. And then I'll be back. You stay here. It'll only take a minute."
She left a stunned Ron and Harry watching from the Gryffindor table as she and Malfoy walked over to an open area near the doorway. Hermione lowered her voice to a hiss. "What in the hell do you think you are doing?"
"Just having a little fun, Granger. I haven't let anything slip. If you're keeping your end of the bargain then all this is just one of our normal spats and nobody needs to know anything."
"Quit it right now, Malfoy. If you don't, I'll..."
"You'll what?" He smiled at her. "I don't think you'll do anything at all, Granger. This is my game and I'll play it my way. All the consequences are yours."
"So, what do you want? Hurry up and spit it out or Ron will be over here in a minute." Hermione glanced back at the Gryffindor table where Ron was looking daggers in their direction.
"I just wanted to schedule our next appointment, Granger. Tonight in the Prefects bath. I think midnight will suffice."
Hermione's heart sank. She knew this was probably coming but she had hoped for a respite from Malfoy's lecherous attentions. "I just saw you last night, Malfoy."
"Ah, but you left before we got to the main course, Granger, so you're going to make up for it tonight. Besides, I'm generously giving you tomorrow night off. I believe you have astronomy then, don't you? I'm sure you'll enjoy remembering our first uh, appointment, when you're up on the tower."
Hermione couldn't help shuddering at the thought.
"See you this evening then." Malfoy said as if they were arranging a study session or something. Hermione said nothing but turned and went back to the Gryffindor table. The lunch period was almost over. She told Ron a story about Malfoy wanting to borrow her notes on Miskats which she was sure he didn't believe.
That evening after dinner, Seamus returned. It was a sad occasion for the Gryffindors, but they were all relieved to have their friend back among them. Hermione could hardly stand to look at him. Her guilt pangs hit hard as she saw the Irish boy surrounded by his friends and classmates. The Gryffindors stayed up late into the night and Hermione realized she would have to leave the common room at a time when anyone could see her. She said goodnight to Ron and Harry and went upstairs. A few minutes later she came downstairs quietly, trying to avoid Ron and Harry. She slipped out through the portrait hole, trying not draw attention to herself.
