Sorry for the delay. I've had great anxiety about how I truly want this story to end. I've written and re-written this chapter about five times in the last few months. I hope it lives up to the long wait that you've had to endure!
Chapter 70: Battlecry
She had felt something different in the air that day. Hermione knew that it was now or never for her to act. Once their communal shower was finished, Tom dressed in a hurry. He stopped right before putting his dragon hide boots on, "Hermione, come here." The words sounded more like an order than a request. Hermione walked to him as if in a dream. He was being too serious and she wasn't sure she wanted to hear what he was going to say to her. Her throat felt too tight to either breathe or swallow. She looked at the man that she'd chosen to stand beside in this war. His eyes looked back into hers, and his hand came up to cup her cheek, "Promise me that you will take care of you and Thomas. Regardless of whatever else you may see happening, get our son to safety."
She tried to hold back the tears that she could feel bubbling up and ready to flow. His words sounded too much like a goodbye. Was he not planning on surviving this? She didn't dare ask why he was asking this. The tears came anyway, rolling down her face and wetting Tom's hand. His thumb brushed them away, as he leaned in to kiss along the trail that followed her tears.
"I will Tom. I promise to get Thomas to safety." Her voice hitched while answering. "Please be safe. Finish what you are doing and come back to me, to us."
Tom's lips found hers in a long lingering kiss. The feel of him lean, and hard against her felt safe and warm. His hands tangled in her long chestnut hair, as his mouth devoured hers. His wet and willing tongue ran along her soft lips, nipping along the way. Hermione shivered from head to toe wondering if this would be their last kiss ever. She could feel Tom's thudding heart as her pulse raced fast. His fingers strolled lower and lower smoothing along her skin. In anticipation she waited for each touch, gasping as his hands cupped her from behind. He drew her soft body against him, as he slid along her curves sensually.
Soon. Way too soon, his lips withdrew from hers. Hermione felt the loss, as if a bucket of cold water had been thrown on her. Tom's fingers lingered on her lips for but a moment, "You are my love for always." His warm lips pressed against her fevered brow, lingering as if he didn't want to let go.
Hermione stood silently as he turned and walked out of their chambers on his way to meet his inner circle. She fell back onto their bed. The very same bed they had made love on many times since her return. The same bed where their little family had spent mornings laughing and lingering together. She rested on the huge comfy bed, where their new child had been conceived; the secret only known to her still. Hermione knew now was not the time to share this news with Tom, right before one of the biggest battles of the war. He didn't need more distractions, as he was already worried about her and baby Thomas, let alone a new baby growing within her. She knew it had been careless of them to want another child right now. A part of Hermione had wanted another baby from Tom, especially not knowing if he'd make it through this war. He had to live. She and her babies had to survive so they could have some happiness. Her plan had to work and it would if everything lined up in her favor. Her eyes shut for a moment imagining what that would be like, to live without fear and war. She rolled out of bed calling for a house elf. She felt more determined now, than before. She would make things happen for the love of her life and for her children. With a smile she sat down to look over her long list of important things to do.

The Dark Lord did have a heart. He tried not to show this fact, except to Hermione alone. His Death Eaters needed to think he was made of stone. He had to show no fear. He couldn't be worrying about his love or his son. He had to trust Hermione to take care of his child. She was a strong witch who could take care of herself and would kill in defense of their child. He had always known he'd chosen wisely when looking for a mate. Even Flamina had begrudgingly admitted that she was worthy to be The Dark Lord's mate.
Taking some deep breaths, he tried valiantly to push Hermione and Thomas out of his mind. Striding with a flourish into the room of Death Eaters, he knocked the doors open, "Shall we begin to set up for the attack?"

Hermione had taken her lunch in her bedroom to prepare. She hadn't eaten much because of her very nervous stomach and the new nausea from early pregnancy. Wasting time on eating, rather than preparing for what was to come, also inhibited her appetite. She stood with a sigh of defeat, and pushed her uneaten lunch away. The walls felt as if they were closing in on her. It was hard having a clear head when she knew that soon a battle was heading their way.
"Time to finish packing." Hermione spoke to Thomas, who smiled up at his mum. Circling around the room she started to gather everything she thought she and Thomas would need in their escape from Malfoy Manor.
Thomas was crawling across the floor, giggling as he went about from one side of the room to the next. His eyes always straying up to his mother, who was bustling around as she nervously pulled out her bag. Hermione had put an extension charm on it to hold a large amount of things that would be needed for them to survive once they'd left. She walked over to the fireplace and moved the stone where she had hidden the Muggle weapons. Strapping them onto her body, along with putting her wand in it's holster brought about a sense of relief.
"I know I'm forgetting something, " Hermione looked around the room with loathing. Her eyes roamed around the bedroom that had basically been her prison chambers for months. She'd not miss the confinement of being stuck here at all. Hermione had always longed for a home with an open yard, maybe up in the mountains. Her dream home would be far away from war, betrayal and meddling old wizards that wanted to kill her son.
Thomas came to his mum and tugging on her skirt. With his pudgy hands he managed to pull himself up to stand. Hermione laughed with delight. "Oh my clever little one. Look at you." She swept him up in her arms, hugging him tight against her.
"How am I going to get you away from here? If it was just me I wouldn't be concerned, but you are so big now." The baby's arms went around his mum's neck as she gave him a big squeeze back. Life and its consequences were so different now that a child was involved in the mix. Not that she had ever been overly selfish when it came to taking care of only herself. She'd always been taking care of someone whether it was her puppy, Harry, Ron, her parents, or Crookshanks. Now she needed to protect Thomas, Lily, baby Harry, Sirius, and of course the man she loved, Tom Riddle Jr. Others would laugh thinking that The Dark Lord needed someone watching over him, but to her she just had a bad feeling about today.

Sirius Black sat with other Order members finishing the last of their breakfast. They knew it would only be a few more hours until they left to attack Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters at Malfoy Manor. Sirius sat with James, Remus, Frank and Arthur. The tension was felt in the room rented out in The Three Broomsticks. It was also extremely crowded. All of the Order members were waiting for Albus Dumbledore to make his way down from Hogwarts. Sirius was sure there would be the normal "pep talk" from Dumbledore about their upcoming victory over The Dark Lord and the Death Eaters. Then Moody would blabber on about "Constant Vigilance." Most of the women Order members weren't there. They'd been told to stay home with the children, which hadn't gone over well with many of them, but they'd complied.
Sirius tried not to brood as he thought of Hermione and Thomas. How was he going to be able to help them escape without getting hurt or killed? His thoughts swirled around in his head that he didn't hear his name being called.
"Sirius, what's wrong with you mate?" Remus hit his arm.
"Nothings wrong Mooney. Why do you ask?" Sirius tried to grin at his friend, but knew he wasn't doing a good job of it.
"You just seem a million miles away that's all. Are you worried about today?" Remus looked at him trying to sense what was bothering him. Out of all of their friends, he was the one who knew him the best. He had to not give anything away or his plan would fail to keep Hermione safe.
"Usually you love getting into skirmishes with anything having to do with Slytherins." James laughed at Sirius and the scowl that his friend shot him. "You're not going soft on us are you Padfoot?" His words only earned him another glare from his friend who felt like strangling someone right now, and it wasn't a Death Eater. Sirius felt like he was combusting inside. He felt like killing someone and that someone had just walked into the room.
"Greetings my fellow Order members. Today is a glorious day where we will end this war!" Albus Dumbledore's confidence was borderline conceit. So far in this war, no one had truly been winning. In fact, The Order had had more members killed by the other side, than vice versa. Dumbledore's cockiness now could potentially spell doom for every person in the room.
Sirius gritted his teeth and turned his eyes downward. He didn't want to be caught glaring at the man who was in charge of today's operation. What a barmy arsehole! He was going to get all of them killed with no thought of anyone else. He glanced over at Remus who unfortunately had been staring straight at him. With raised eyebrows Remus kept looking at him. Now was not the time to tell him about what Dumbledore's true intentions were. He wasn't sure he even wanted anyone else to know the truth about Hermione being involved with Voldemort and being the mother of his child.
"We will take no prisoners whether they be wizard, witch or child." Dumbledore's voice boomed across the room. His ears hurt listening to the drivel running from the man's mouth. He was sure that he'd put a sonorous on his voice before he'd started talking, even though he hadn't needed to in such closed quarters.
"So you're saying that all will be killed, even innocent children?" Arthur Weasley stood up, the tightness in his expression showing his disgust at the old wizard.
" I'm sorry," Arthur shook his head and pounded his fist against the table. "But I'll not kill any child who is blameless and has nothing to do with this war." Arthur's words caused a stir in the room. Many others could be heard murmuring Arthur's same sentiments.
Sirius sat back with a shake of his head, settling in his chair with smugness. Let's see how Dumbledore was going to dig his way out of this.
"Silence!" Dumbledore's cry echoed through the room. "There are reason's why there must be no survivors."
"They better be bloody good if you want to kill a child." Sirius spoke up, knowing that there was more than one child at the manor now.
"Voldemort has a son who will succeed him some day. This must not happen. That is my reason." The murmuring could be heard throughout the room.
Sirius could hear whispers of "I wonder who the mum is of the child?" to " How does Dumbledore know about this child?" He was seething inside and hoping that Dumbledore would not name who Thomas's mum was in front of everyone. He could hardly believe that he had told them about there being a child of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
"Just remember, this battle could change the course of this war or even end the war today!" Once again Dumbledore's voice rang throughout the room. Cheers went up as Order members shouted excitedly about the upcoming combat. To most of the members, they had no personal ties with any of their enemies. To Sirius, he was still in love with the woman who he knew would still be in the manor, with a child he would willingly raise and call his own…if only his mum would let him.
"We have two hours until we meet one mile from our destination. You have your assigned portkeys for each group of three." Dumbledore continued now that he knew he had the full attention of his Order members. "Each group has their own mission to accomplish and we will succeed!" More cheers went up throughout the room.
Sirius looked at every jovial person in the room, and wondered whom he'd have to hurt in order to keep Hermione and Thomas safe. He didn't care who would have to be sacrificed, but he vowed that it wouldn't be either Hermione or Thomas whose lives would be ending that day.

In the next chapter it'll finally be what we've all waited for…the big battle scene! I know that this was a lot of lead up to that, but there were many important things that needed to be included before the battle. What surprised you about this chapter? Is there anyone you hope doesn't make it? Uhhhhh….is the suspense killing you as much as it's killing me?
Thanks to so many for reading this story. Hang in there! I promise you the ending will be a climatic one without that rushed feeling! So it could be anywhere from 2-3 more chapters left and an epilogue. Remember to read my other WIP stories out there that need some love: Blinded (Draco/Hermione) and Living (Severus/Hermione) and all of my other finished stories! Ciao for now!
