Worth It
They were all exhausted, and they’d had a hell of a time trying to get the kids into bed. They were all excited, they all knew what was coming tomorrow…well, except for Lyran and Caronwen, who had both gone down to sleep like a dream. No, it was the other kids that were the issue.
The sextuplets had been manic for a while, but being so young they had dropped by nine at night, which was still after their bedtime, but not as bad as they had been expecting. No, it was Loren and Gage who were the worst, and it was almost eleven before Nasta managed to get them into bed with threats of not having any presents tomorrow.
Harry rubbed a hand through his hair as he tried to set up the front room, putting piles of presents where each child would sit.
The floo chimed, and it started…the Christmas Eve exchange.
“Hey guys, late night?” Caesar greeted them with a grin, hefting a massive sack after him.
“Every year you do this, why don’t you shrink it down first?!” Max demanded of his brother.
“It’s more fun like this.” Caesar explained with a manic grin, passing the sack over to Max.
Max rolled his eyes and turned and found the massive gift bag for Caesar, Amelle, and their kids. He made it a point to shrink it down to a more manageable size.
“Killjoy.” Caesar accused.
“Your girls are still awake, aren’t they?”
“Yeah, but Amelle and her mother are distracting them, enough time for me to sneak these upstairs.” Caesar winked.
“Happy Christmas then, Seize.”
Caesar rolled his eyes at the old nickname. “You too. Have a good one, guys!”
“Bye!” They all called out, along with tacked on Happy Christmases, and Harry got Caesar’s bag and started handing presents to his mates who were laying out piles.
“This one is for Nia, Blaise!” He called out, passing over a small, wrapped gift to his mate. “Nasta, this one’s for Lucine.”
They hadn’t even finished with Caesar’s stuff before Richard flooed in.
“Boys!” He greeted happily. “How are you all?”
“Tired!” They all grumped back, and he laughed.
He took out a bag from his pocket and resized it, and Harry wasn’t the only one to groan at the size of it.
“It’s your own fault for having so many babies for us to spoil!” Richard told them with a grin. “Now, you can tell dear old dad, are there any more on the way? Please let me know, my bet with Ashleigh is in jeopardy.”
Harry laughed and shook his head. “No. I haven’t even had a heat period.”
“Damn it! I owe that woman a dinner date and something else I won’t mention in front of you.”
“It’s not like you to be so considerate.” Max pointed out.
“It’s Christmas.” Richard said with a grin. “Now, Harry, really, you couldn’t have fallen pregnant again for Christmas.”
“It’s not for lack of trying.” Harry said with a naughty, exaggerated wink.
His mates all groaned and Richard chuckled.
“Maybe you should stop betting on us like we’re horses or something.” Max demanded.
“Oh, care bear, you know you’re Drackens, not horses, though you seem to stud as often as those racehorses. Hence your mother and I betting on you.”
Max made a disgusted noise and turned away, leaving Richard laughing.
“I have to go, I’ve got to drop off Talia and Alayla’s things too.” Richard told them.
They once again said their goodbyes, and turned back to the piles of gifts that were really starting to mount up.
“Every year we go overboard.” Draco complained. “Those kids are spoilt.”
The other four just stared at him, before laughing, and Draco went a bit pink cheeked.
“I know from experience.” He insisted.
“So do I.” Harry nodded. “Just from the other side. I used to watch my cousin get a mountain of gifts while I got nothing. The difference is that our kids are never ungrateful or unappreciative of what they’re given. Dudley was. He didn’t like what he was given, he usually broke it within a few days. Our babies aren’t like that at all.”
Draco sighed and came to hug him. “We have good kids.”
Harry smiled at him and gave him a kiss. “Yeah we do.”
“We raised them right.” Max said, throwing his big arms around them both. “Truly they only have so many gifts because we have such a large extended family. It’s not like we’re giving them forty presents off of everyone. One gift only, that’s the rule.”
“It truly is because we have so many of them.” Nasta said, as he carried on sorting the gifts out with Blaise.
“Maybe a few more soon.” Harry said happily.
“Honestly if you have any more I’ll have a vasectomy!” Max insisted.
“Liar.” Harry accused fondly. “Now, let’s get sorting these presents, or we really will be up all night…again!”
They had almost finished the bag from Richard when Alexander flooed in, overjoyed with holiday cheer and pleased to see them.
“How’s it going, boys?” He asked. “Almost done?”
“Nowhere near.” Max said, rolling his eyes.
“I remember this, and I don’t envy you. Do you need any help?”
“No, we’ll get it sorted, as always.” Max waved away.
Alexander chuckled. “Alright, but you know where we are if you need an extra pair of hands. Don’t forget some pepper-ups tomorrow to perk yourselves up a bit.” He added, laughing.
Harry dived into the bag and started handed out presents. The sooner they got this done, the better.
Alexander had barely been gone for a minute before Aneirin flooed in, and he grinned to see their little operation at work.
“Hard at work?” He teased.
“Always.” Harry said with a sigh, swiping his forehead with his hand.
“I’m sorry to add to it, but here.” Aneirin held out his hand, and then enlarged it to normal size. Harry felt tired just looking at it.
“We’ll sort it all, don’t worry.” Max said easily. “Maybe a bit of a break before we tackle it though. We have to eat those mince pies the kids put out.”
“I’ll go boil the kettle.” Harry said, wanting a nice cup of tea to see him through.
Aneirin was gone when he came back with tea, and Lucius and Narcissa were just about leaving as he placed the tray down and gave them both a hug.
“We’ll see you on Boxing Day.” Narcissa said, smiling at them. “Make sure you spoil my grandchildren!”
“They’re always spoilt, Mother!” Draco assured her, sighing heavily. “They really don’t need to be spoilt even more.”
“Of course they do.” Lucius insisted.
Harry chuckled, even as he took the mince pie that Nasta handed to him and sat down for five minutes to eat it.
Draco saw his parents out and came to collapse beside him.
“I swear they get worse every year!”
“How many more are we expecting?” Harry asked.
“Just Marianna now.”
“She should be here within ten minutes.” Blaise assured them.
“We should be in bed by one. It’s looking good, lovers!” Max said, looking at the clock tick closer to half twelve.
“We’ve done everything we needed to?” Harry fretted.
“Those genius boxes kept the kids so quiet we were able to do everything early. Draco dressed the table, you finished the wrapping, Blaise and Nasta finished cleaning after the kids went to bed, and I, your glorious, amazing mate, cooked everything to perfection ready for tomorrow.”
Harry giggled and pulled his dope of a lover into a kiss.
“Thank you for being such an amazing cook, lover.”
“You’re very welcome, gorgeous.” Max assured him.
Harry rolled his eyes, ate the last little bit of his pie, drained his cup, and then went diving into the massive bag that Lucius and Narcissa had brought over.
Marianna’s bag, when she arrived with it, was just as big, and Harry wondered if maybe being done by one in the morning was a little too optimistic, as they read tags and sorted the gifts into piles.
It looked wonderful when they were done, at just gone one in the morning, with everything sorted and stacked into neat little piles. Presents from parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, everyone under the sun. They’d had gifts arriving every morning for the last week or so with the owl post, from far away friends, and now they were all ready for the big day tomorrow…well, technically later today. Not even all that much later either, as the kids would be waking them up in a few short hours.
He took a few photos of the room as it was, because it would turn into carnage pretty quickly tomorrow. The thought made him smile, as long as his babies were happy, carnage was acceptable.
“Come on you, we need to get to bed.” Blaise chided him.
Harry nodded his agreement, and he allowed his mate to pull him upstairs to bed, as Nasta made sure everything was locked up and all the lights were out. It had been a difficult year, full of stress and strife, of new rules and new habits, but they would get through it, and they would have a very happy Christmas.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ X
Harry could barely peel his eyes open when he heard the excited screeches from down the hall, and he groaned unhappily as he rolled further into Nasta, and tried to bury his face into his mate’s armpit.
“It’s ten to five!” He heard Draco rage.
Their bedroom door burst open and of course it was the sextuplets.
“It’s too early!” Harry heard Max tell them sternly.
“But, Daddy, it’s Christmas!”
“It’ll still be Christmas in a few hours. How do you know if Santa has even been if it’s so early?” Max asked them.
“Can we check?” Eiren asked.
“No you cannot check!” Max said. “Back to bed, now!”
The sextuplets all whined and complained, and Harry closed his eyes in the dark bliss that they left behind as they left the bedroom and closed the door.
He didn’t realise when he fell back to sleep, but he must have, as he was jolted awake by another screech of ‘It’s Christmas!’ from down the hall and he sighed. That was one of their older kids, and if they were awake, then there was no way they were getting back to sleep.
He moaned and rolled over, out from under Nasta’s arm.
“These kids are going to kill us.” He heard Draco complain.
“Time’s it?” Harry asked sleepily.
“Just gone half five, so we got a bit more sleep.”
“Just hope the sextuplets haven’t destroyed anything while we did.” Blaise put in.
The bedroom door creaked open and this time a body leapt onto the bed and started poking at them. Harry groaned as he got a poke to the cheek.
“It’s Christmas! Wake up!” Gage demanded and Harry groaned louder.
“Gage, honey, it’s so early.” Harry complained.
“It’s later now, Mummy!” Ellette told him from somewhere at the foot of the bed, and of course the sextuplets were there.
Harry groaned yet again, before pushing himself upright. The kids all cheered, knowing that he was getting up, and he shook his head.
“You know the rules. Breakfast first, then back upstairs to get into your Christmas outfits.” Harry told them.
“Everything is all set out ready, Harry.” Max told him.
Harry was surprised that he was even awake, as he was still lying down with his eyes closed, looking like he was still asleep.
“I’ll get coffee on.” He told them, as he eased out of bed and herded the kids out into the hallway.
“Mummy, quickly. The sooner we get done, the sooner we can open presents!”
Harry chuckled. “Be quiet a minute and let me look in on Lyran and Caronwen, they might not be awake yet.”
There was a round of hissing like shushes, and Harry cracked the door. Both babies were still asleep. He closed the door again and let them sleep. They’d only be cranky if he woke them up.
“Right, the babies are still asleep. Is anyone else awake?”
“Leolin’s up.” Gage told him. “Nico woke him up, and they’re downstairs with the girls.”
Harry rolled his eyes. He took them down and Leolin was bleary eyed at the table, with both sets of triplets and Nicholas.
“Mum, welcome to this hellish nightmare!” Leolin declared.
Harry snorted and accepted the running Nicholas into his arms, hefting the five year old onto his hip.
“Let’s get you all fed first. I take it that Calix, Xabiere, Lai, Mace, Mollie and Taren are all still asleep?”
Leolin shrugged. “I was woken up and dragged down here at five, so I don’t know.” He said.
Harry sighed as he realised that the kids had obviously gone from their bedroom, to that of their older siblings.
“I’ll get coffee on.”
Harry started making coffee, and breakfast.
“Can we wake everyone else up?” Vanora asked him.
“No, sweetheart. Don’t wake other’s up yet. It’s too early.”
As if to counter his words, Elian came barrelling into the kitchen, all excited energy, looking so much like himself it was uncanny, with his messy black hair and brilliant emerald eyes. The only difference was that Elian had never needed glasses like he had before his inheritance.
“It’s Christmas!” He said excitedly.
“So I’ve heard.” Harry said dryly, flipping pancakes and drinking his mug of coffee greedily.
“I woke up everyone else.”
Harry sighed, but he couldn’t stay mad, it was Christmas after all.
“Sit down and wait for breakfast.”
Elian sat and ruffled Eurei’s black hair, before chatting excitedly with the twelve year old triplets. Draco shuffled into the kitchen, and Harry slapped a mug of coffee onto him quickly.
“Blaise isn’t going to move without a vat of coffee.” Draco told him.
“Ugh, same every year.” Harry said, managing a chuckle.
More kids came down, excited and eager, the rest of his mates trudged in looking more like inferi.
“Mummy, I’m done, can I go and get dressed?”
Harry nodded, and there was a rush from the table as the kids rushed to get dressed. He rolled his eyes and poured himself another coffee.
“Me too.” Blaise said, having drained his first cup within five minutes.
Harry took the cafetiere over and poured out more coffee for his mates. They would have to keep the coffee coming today. They’d had less than four hours of sleep.
“These kids better go down early.” Max grumbled.
“Eat your pancakes.” Harry told him, walking around the table to kiss him, nuzzling into his cheek.
He was waking up now, and Max gave him a smile and turned his head to get a proper kiss.
Xabiere trudged in and he moaned unhappily.
“They’re little monsters!” He complained. “They told me I had to get up or they’d pee on my bed!”
Harry aborted a laugh and tried to bring up some parental anger on Xabiere’s behalf. They’d taught their kids better than to pee on furniture after all…it didn’t help, as he didn’t think the kids would ever actually do it, so he ended up chucking behind Max.
“It is Christmas.” Leolin told his brother.
Xabe rolled his eyes. “The best gift would have been sleeping in until it’s actually dawn.”
“When has that ever happened though?” Taren asked as he came bounding in like the little jackrabbit he’d always been.
“You’re too happy.”
“I’m a morning person.” Taren said easily.
“Save me from morning people.” Xabe complained, accepting a plate of pancakes and some coffee.
Harry got a glare from Nasta for that, but Xabe was eighteen and able to decide if he wanted tea, coffee, or juice.
Mace came in with Caronwen and Lyran, and Harry cooed over their sleepy faces.
“The sextuplets woke them up.” Mace told him.
That did make Harry angry, as he’d told them to let the babies sleep. He’d be having words with them.
Lyran was too wound up to sleep, but a few soft words and stroking of her forehead and over her eyes sent Caronwen back to sleep. Harry passed her to Draco to cuddle for a while.
“Mummy, why early?” Lyran asked from Nasta’s arms.
“It’s a special day, Lyran. It’s Christmas.”
“Santa?!” Lyran asked.
“That’s right, sweetheart.”
“He’ll be having an extra-long nap today.” Blaise said.
Harry nodded as he made a single pancake for Lyran and cut it up small for him to pick at.
It was closer to six when Harry finally gathered everyone ready. They were all fed, washed, and dressed, Max was ready with the camcorder, they made sure that they had everything they needed, and then Harry let them run free. The older kids were more controlled, but the little ones had gone berserk.
Caronwen was awake again, in an adorable red Christmas dress, and Harry sat her by him, and helped her to unwrap her presents. Lyran was on the other side, but he didn’t really need any help, just some supervision.
Harry was wide awake and laughing, he would start to feel the early morning by mid-afternoon, however. But as he dragged the Christmas morning emergency box over, which was filled with various batteries, scissors, screwdrivers, medical supplies, and bin bags, to start sorting the first of the toys he was happy too.
He smiled at the carnage, as Draco picked up the torn paper, even as Mace threw Eiren, and then Errai into a massive pile of paper as if it was autumn leaves. Harry chuckled and turned back to Caronwen, who had unwrapped a set of blocks with numbers and letters on them. She let out a cute ‘oooo’ and Harry’s smile widened to a full on grin.
He gave her a cuddle, and kissed her head as she turned them over in her hands. Early or not. Not enough sleep and not enough coffee to fix it. He didn’t care as he looked out into the massive family room, filled with his children, his mates, and even a grandson, it was days like this that he lived for.
“Harry, come and open your own stuff!” Max encouraged him, sitting in a pile of unwrapped presents and ripped paper.
He’d put the camcorder on a little tripod to keep it still and steady on the room at large and he held his hands out for Caronwen, who went along with the pack of blocks she seemed most interested in. Max immediately started opening them for her.
Harry sat by his own pile of presents, and he took one last look out into the room. Smiling at his family, his babies. He turned back to his presents and started opening them, still smiling at the shouts of excitement around him, and he inevitably got distracted when Emerus came to slot himself onto his lap. They had definitely gotten up too soon, and Emerus was already flagging. He would need a mid-morning nap, and then hopefully he would be in a better mood for Christmas lunch.
Harry brushed the hair back from Emerus’ face and gave him a kiss. Christmas was one of his most favourite times of the year, and it was entirely because he got to spend the day with his family. The teenagers weren’t being moody in their own rooms, or locked in the teen lounge, his mates were all home for once. Usually Nasta had to work on Christmas Day, being the senior Dragonologist of the Welsh reserve, but he was covered this year by a work colleague, which meant that they were free to spend the day together, which made it extra special.
Harry looked out into the room again, Emerus cuddled on his lap, and he grinned at all the happiness and excitement. There were bound to be tears later, someone would inevitably get injured, and the little kids would be overtired by the afternoon, but everyone had gotten what they had wanted, or what they had asked for, and Harry felt his heart swell and settle.
There really was something magical about Christmas, even this Christmas, he thought, as he finally managed to unwrap an extra-large bar of fudge chocolate. It was still his favourite, even after all these years, and he hid it immediately from Nasta’s gaze, sliding it under the settee to retrieve later.
He really, really loved Christmas!
