Chapter 71: Showdown at the Manor
He was standing out in the woods waiting for the go ahead to attack, and it was eating Sirius Black alive. It was bad enough to be bored with nothing to do, but how was he going to pull off what he needed to do once he was inside Malfoy Manor? He had to act like he was following Dumbledore's orders while also protecting Hermione and Thomas from the assigned assassins. He held a fag between his lips taking a deep pull as the smoke filled his lungs. He knew his bad habit would calm his nerves, as he watched the smoke curl up into the air.
"Padfoot, put that out mate," Remus stood next to him staring out towards the manor. "I thought you said you were going to quit."
"I only smoke when I'm nervous." Sirius took one more drag and then dropped it on the ground crushing it with his foot.
"There's nothing to be nervous about. We're going in there, taking down the bad guy and ending this war." Remus said confidently and twirled his wand between his fingers.
It seemed like everyone around him was in a jovial mood, considering they were going into the biggest battle of the war. Sirius knew that he was the only one who had someone to lose in this battle. He needed to focus his mind and become battle ready.
Soon, they all saw the signal coming from Dumbledore's wand that sparked for a moment and then disappeared. Moving him forward was Hermione's beautiful face as his focus and his determination to save her.

Thomas was in a cranky mood. Hermione knew that his bad mood was because of his two new teeth that were coming in. She took a deep breath as she tried holding her son and thinking of ways to help sooth him. His nurse elf had brought a mild potion to help with the pain and Hermione was hoping that it would help soon. She held him close against her as she sang a familiar lullaby. It tore her heart apart to see him in such great pain.
Dealing with a cranky baby wasn't the only thing bothering Hermione. It had been very quiet in the manor since she had awakened early at six a.m. She knew what was coming, but wasn't exactly sure when it was going to happen. Her bag was now always on her body. With an extension charm and a feather light charm added to the bag, it would be easy to carry it anywhere. She wore Muggle jeans underneath her robes. All of the Muggle weapons were strapped on to her body somewhere. In her mind she was as ready for a battle as she could be, except for one thing. What was she going to do with Thomas? Keeping him with her he would be a sitting target. Any spell sent her way could hurt or kill him. On the other hand, leaving him with his nurse elf could also be detrimental, or the elf could keep him safe with her magic. Gambling with her son's life wasn't something she wanted to think about. Hermione was still waiting for Tom to come and get her to send her away before the battle. Where was he?

The Dark Lord was giving last minute orders to his inner circle.
"Dumbledore's precious Order is waiting out in the forest circled around Malfoy Manor. They apparently think we know nothing of their siege upon The Dark Lord and his Death Eaters, and this will be their ultimate downfall." The raucous laughter filled the room at their master's words.
"Will there be prisoners taken my Lord?" Lucius Malfoy asked.
"If any of Dumbledore's fools survive the battle Lucius, your dungeons are empty waiting for them." The Dark Lord sneered at the thought. His greatest ambition was to do away with all of them, especially Dumbledore. "Have the lookouts alert us when they start moving towards the manor."
Tom felt fearless as he studied his Death Eaters and their anticipation of the upcoming battle. His enemies would fall today and his reign over all wizards and witches would soon begin. With Hermione and Thomas by his side…Tom's heart seemed to stop beating for a moment. He'd forgotten during all of this morning's preparation to take Hermione and Thomas away to a safe house set up for them, Narcissa and the young Malfoy heir.
"Lucius, where is Narcissa and your son?" his question was met with the same look Tom knew must have been on his face only a few moments ago. He was alarmed at how they had both forgotten to take their women to safety, and now the enemy was almost barreling down their door. Memories of the rainy day on top of the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts, many years ago, filled his mind. The feelings of fear and helplessness overcame him. He never wanted to feel that way again of not being able to protect Hermione and his son. Once again Dumbledore was here to take them away from him. How could he have been so distracted to not take care of them first?
"Lucius, go get your family and take them to the safe house as quickly as possible. I will do the same."
He watched as his right hand man fled the room in a hurry. Tom bolted towards his own bedroom where he had last seen Hermione and Thomas. He hoped to all of the Gods in the Universe that he would make it in time. Even though he knew Hermione could take care of herself, he knew that Dumbledore didn't play fair, and that he was out for the blood of the Dark Lord's son.
"Dolohov and Yaxley follow me as back up." Both Death Eaters came as commanded without a question as their leader rushed by.
On the way down the hallway he heard the cries of the lookout, "The Order is on their way! They are trying to break down the wards at the front gate."
Damn that they had put up the anti-apparation wards only an hour earlier to prepare for battle. They wanted to trap the enemy once inside, but now that trap could potentially backfire on their own people.

Dumbledore and his Order were starting their advance outside of Malfoy Manor. Sirius held back watching the others heading towards the front gates. Several of the wizards were working on taking down the many wards that were in place. Sirius scoffed at what was happening. Did Dumbledore really think that Voldemort wasn't aware that they were out here preparing to attack? Maybe they would throw open the doors and welcome them in for a spot of tea. They'd already lost the advantage of surprise by attacking in daylight, instead of at night like he and the Marauders had wanted to. Sirius wondered if this was all a fool's errand, and they would all wind up dead because of Dumbledore's pride.
"Are you coming mate?" Remus called out to him as he started running towards their fellow fighters. Sirius nodded his head at his friend, but knew that he would hold back at the first. He wanted to make sure the battle was in full swing before he charged in and headed off on his own to look for Hermione.

Hermione had called three times for Thomas's nurse elf and she hadn't appeared. What was going on? With a huge sigh, she strapped Thomas onto her chest in a baby sling of her own design. She hated to do it, but she cast Silencio on her child. She couldn't risk Thomas crying out as she snuck around the manor. Slinging her bag over her shoulder, she cast charms on the sling that would hold him tightly in place. There was no use staying here waiting for something to happen.
With a Notice-Me–Not charm on both she and Thomas, she opened the bedroom door and looked down the hallway. There was not a soul in sight. The eerie silence made her stomach lurch, as she felt something was wrong. It was too quiet for this time of day. Hermione stayed close to the wall, sliding along looking in both directions. The sudden massive blast of magic hit the manor. Hermione flew backwards landing hard on her back and hitting her head into the wall. She was thankful that Thomas was situated securely on her front. Her head felt dizzy, her back hurt, and she quickly looked down at her son to see if had been hurt. His eyes were big and he was crying silently, and looked as terrified as she felt. "Shhh baby. It will be OK." This was hurting her heart seeing him so scared and not being able to explain what was happening. Struggling to her knees, she felt something warm trickle down the back of her neck. Reaching up to her head she saw the blood as soon as her hand came down. The blow to her head had been harder than she thought. Her fear increased when she worried about the new baby that she had only found out about recently. She prayed that it was safe inside of her.
Hermione stood on wobbly legs as her arms swung out to the nearby wall. She tried to grasp onto something, but nothing was near. Around the corner coming at a run, Tom headed straight for her. "Oh Gods, you're safe." He lifted her up and swung her around. "Thomas, please tell me he is OK?" Hermione lifted the charm to show Tom that his son was ok. Tom reached out to kiss the top of Thomas's head. The baby smiled at seeing his father.
"He was only only scared," she reassured Tom and bounced her son to keep him calm. "What is happening? Is it Dumbledore?" She couldn't help the tears that were starting to fall. Everything and everyone she loved was being threatened.
"I can't get you away from the manor right now." They stood there looking at one another, quite shaken, as Hermione trembled in his arms. "There is no way in hell that I'm letting that bastard Dumbledore get to you or our son." Tom reached out holding her face in his hands. His lips kissed hers ever so quickly, but firm. For a moment Hermione felt safe as his lips pressed against hers, but she knew that moment would pass too soon.
"My Lord, they are headed this way!" Several Death Eaters advanced down the hallway towards them.
"Go Hermione!" Tom pushed her in the other direction. "Run and find somewhere to hide." Even as he watched down the passageway with intent, he turned and anxiously met her eyes, "Promise me that you won't fight unless it's a matter of life and death. It is imperative that you keep Thomas safe." He reached down to give Thomas a kiss on his head, smoothing down his mass of curly locks.
Hermione's heart broke as she realized she'd have to leave him now and proceed to a safer part of the manor. Before she could turn, Tom pulled her into him swiftly, "You, my love, are my life." He kissed her one more time and gave her a forlorn look, before she scurried away. The last thing she heard, was yelling and spells being shot back and forth. She tried to brush the tears away as she looked for somewhere to hide out.

Sirius stumbled into the manor as he tripped over a dead Order member. Looking down, he didn't remember the poor bloke's name and he didn't have time to move the corpse. The fighting in the entry way was fierce as spell after spell was shot back and forth. There was smoke in the air, as some fools were sending spells that were setting fire to objects in the Malfoy's home. Not that he cared too much about that, he'd never liked their stuck up and pompous ways. The smoke actually gave him cover as he ran up the stairs where he knew the bedrooms were located. With the occasional hex he had to hurl towards a Death Eater, he was making good progress to the upper level. Skirting along the wall, he opened bedroom doors looking for Hermione and Thomas. The next door he opened had a baby's crib inside, but there was no Hermione or Thomas in sight. Clothes were flung about, as were baby toys and blankets. It appeared that she had left quickly, but for where? There was no more time to stay here looking for clues. Sirius left and kept running down the hall leading deeper into Malfoy Manor. He wouldn't stop searching until he knew Hermione and Thomas were safe.

Hermione ran downstairs heading towards the dungeons and the weapons' room. She remembered that Lucius had said the weapons' room could not be detected unless you knew it was already there. She met very few Order members, as most of the fighting was taking place on the main level of the manor. Thomas in his fright had been lulled to sleep snuggled against his mum. Now all she needed to do was call for his nurse elf and prayed that she'd come this time.
Turning the corner, a curse flew over her head. She cast, "Protego," as she ran away from the enemy. How could she fight when she still held her baby in her arms?
"Where did she go?' she heard one man call out.
"Was that her? Was that Voldemort's whore that we were supposed to kill?" the other man's words forced her to run even faster.
The next thing she heard made her blood run cold, "Kill the baby first. You know Dumbledore's order." It wasn't only the words that chilled her, but the voice the words were coming from. She immediately recognized the voice as belonging to James Potter. She knew that Dumbledore wanted Thomas dead, but she never would have believed that James would be willing to do the dirty deed of killing her son.
Another spell came shooting her way as she once again blocked it, then fired off a spell of her own, "Flipendo," that knocked one of the men into the wall. With the distraction of the men's attack she wasn't sure if she had missed the weapons' room door. Pure panic was building as she realized she wasn't sure where she was and could possibly be trapped.
"Stupefy," she heard from behind her, expecting to feel her body falling, but instead she saw one more of the oncoming men fall. "Stupefy you bastard!" and then James fell over onto his face. Hermione recognized the voice and turned around to see a smiling Sirius Black holding his hand out to her. He pulled her into his arms and held her tight, only realizing at that moment that Thomas was bundled up against Hermione's chest.
"Good God! Thomas was there all along." His eyes were wide with surprise as Hermione once again lifted the spell that had concealed her son. He started pulling Hermione down the hall until he found an empty storeroom. Sirius shut, locked and warded the door, along with a silencing charm. Hermione clung to him again as they both slid down to the floor. Her tears burst forth as she realized how close she and Thomas had come to being killed, if not for Sirius.
His arms held her as she trembled in shock at her close call. His hands smoothed down her hair as he rocked her, trying to stop her tears assuring her that she was safe. "It's fine you are safe now. I won't let them harm you or Thomas."
"So, Dumbledore really did give the order to…kill Thomas," the words came out in a whisper. "I didn't want to think it was really true that he would order a baby's death." Her voice whimpered in disbelief at the hatred Dumbledore had for her and Thomas.
"I'm so sorry Hermione. I just found out, or I would have tried harder to stop it. The Order has been keeping Lily and me in the dark." Sirius snarled his own words of anger at Dumbledore's actions. "James has not been himself. It's like he's under some kind of a spell."
"Why are you helping me?" Hermione demanded.
"Dammit Hermione, you should know the answer to that question," muttered Sirius. He lifted her chin up and looked into her eyes. She knew the answer and it exhilarated and broke her heart all at the same time. Before she could stop him, his lips crashed into hers with a demanding kiss. His hand held her head steady as his lips moved against hers. Before the kiss led to others things, her hands came up to push him off of her.
"Please stop Sirius, I can't," she pleaded. The pain was evident on his face. "I'm pregnant again, with his baby." He flinched back in shock at her words.
"How can you love him Hermione? Voldemort's an evil man. How can you make babies with a man who wants to destroy so many people?" Sirius demanded.
"He wasn't always this bad," she tried to deny his words. "Dumbledore has made all of this worse when he declared war against Tom and me back at school, right before he sent me ahead in time."
"So it's true, you've traveled through time?" Sirius asked.
"Yes, I have and it's a very long story. I fell in love with Tom back at Hogwarts and I'll always love him." Hermione cried out. "I never meant to hurt you Sirius."
"I know Hermione, but I can't help loving you," his gloomy eyes fell on Thomas. "I would have loved him like my own." His hand swept through Thomas's wavy curls. "He's grown since I've seen him last."
"He's starting to talk a lot, and you should see him crawl all over," she smiled as she studied her sleeping child. "Will you take him away from here for me? I need him safe Sirius. I'm a good fighter, but not when I have to protect my child before myself," she begged her friend.
"Where do you want me to take him?" Sirius kept smoothing down Thomas's hair.
"It's a secret kept house outside of London. When this is over, I'll come get him. This will keep both of you safe during this battle." She stood and shook out her cramped legs. "I'll disillusion you both so you can slip out of the manor. There are anti-apparation spells in place here, so you'll have to apparate once you get back into the woods."
Sirius stood and Hermione unhooked the baby sling from around her, and positioned it on Sirius. She then slung the charmed bag over his shoulder. Giving a big sigh she leaned forward to kiss Thomas on the top of his head. Reaching up, she then gave a quick kiss to Sirius's cheek and whispered the address of the house.
"Thank you Sirius. I will forever be in your debt." Her smile she gave was more sad than anything.
His big hand came out to caress her face, "Be careful love. The Order is out for your pretty little head."
"I will Sirius," she tried to give him a brave smile. With her wand she tapped Thomas and Sirius casting the disillusionment charm. She added one more spell, "This one is a silencing spell in case he wakes up and cries. Go now and be safe."
She saw the door open and close. Crumbling to the floor she cried out in pain as she felt the loss of her child from her side, and the loss of a friend. "I do love you Sirius, but I can't have both of you." Hermione stayed curled up, shaken by what she had done, but hopeful that now her son had a chance to live. Wiping her eyes, she tried to calm her soul. She had to find Tom and they had a job to do. It was time to get rid of the truly evil wizard that had been the bane of existence to their family. If they were ever going to live as a family and find some happiness, Dumbledore needed to die.
Hermione checked to make sure that all of her weapons were still attached securely and she bound up her hair in a bun. Putting on a glamor and a disillusionment charm, she opened up the door and headed back down the hall. She snuck past James and the other Order members that were still unconscious. Turning around, she cast the charm to bind them up with invisible ropes and then cast Silencio. Levitating all three men she left them in the empty storeroom where she and Sirius had been. Warding and locking the door, she felt ready to go find Tom and fight by his side.

I hope you enjoyed this nice, long chapter, but there is more of the battle yet to come. The showdown with Dumbledore is coming in the next chapter. I had to have some resolution between Sirius and Hermione, and I hope it felt satisfactory to those of you that liked them together. But, you had to realize that Hermione would choose Tom because this is a Tomione story after all. I'm hoping to have one more chapter and then an epilogue, maybe. We'll see...I say with a giggle. This story just keeps writing itself when I think it's almost done. This is the longest story I've written and it's over the 200,000 words mark. I would love some reviews to celebrate that milestone. Do you want to see Dumbledore killed off in the next chapter? I'm still debating whether or not to keep the old bugger alive. Hearing from you and what you think could possibly play into what I decide, so let me hear from all of you. I've gone back and forth so many times on the ending to this story that it's totally messed with my mind. It just needs to end soon.{ Just a reminder: go read my other stories Living- a Severus/Hermione story and Blinded-a Dramione and both stories are full of angst and lots of run around with the love story part. I also have started another story with still another ship I've never written before, but I won't start posting it until Time Changes All Things is finished.}
