Chapter 72: No Cowards
Sirius and baby Thomas were jerked by the pull of the portkey and landed in a sitting room. Turning his head sharply, he glanced at a form by his side. Looking up, Narcissa Malfoy stood rigidly; arms wrapped around the Malfoy heir close against her chest, and narrowed eyes staring in his direction.
"Why are you here Sirius?" Narcissa asked in a scared, but still haughty voice. "Furthermore, why do you have the Dark Lord's son?"
Sirius stood up tall and straight not letting Narcissa's tone bother him, after all, he was her cousin and a pureblood just as she was.
"I'm Hermione's friend and she was worried about Dumbledore getting to her son. In fact, Hermione, along with my help, fought off a group of Order members that had been assigned to assassinate Thomas and kill her if she got in the way." Sirius said not backing down.
"You are a member of The Order, dear cousin, why are you helping the Dark Lord's woman and his son? Why should I believe what you are saying? Maybe you were sent here to do away with Thomas, me and Draco." Narcissa said as she kept watching every move Sirius made.
Narcissa studied him for a moment, and then her eyes lit up in wonder and she smiled in a knowing way.
"Gods Sirius, you're in love with her, aren't you?" Narcissa asked as she circled around him and Thomas, who was starting to fuss because of Sirius holding him tight in his arms.
"So, you are the one from the other side that was canoodling around with the Dark Lord's woman."
Narcissa walked a circle around him, giving him a smile that was Bellatrix worthy. "He wasn't very happy when he found out that someone was trying to claim the woman he had spent many years searching for."
Her smile looked sweet, but Sirius knowing his Black cousins, knew it was anything but sweet. Coming from a Slytherin, it meant that you were the fly trapped in the spider's web and you both knew the would-be outcome.
"So has the dog caught your tongue?" Narcissa swept once more past him to sit down gracefully on the nearby settee. She hugged her sleeping son protectively to her bosom.
"She and Thomas would be better off with me. I would keep them safe." Sirius tried to defend his actions as he glared at Narcissa.
"You know as well as I do that she will never leave him. As I recall, she left you to come back to him…where she belongs. You might as well put your dreams somewhere safe upon a shelf and go find someone else."
Sirius gave a great sigh, "So what do we do now?" Sirius's arms were getting tired of holding a squirming baby.
Narcissa studied him for a moment and then stood, "Follow me. I'll show you to Hermione's room. It was prepared ahead of time for her, as she was the one who was supposed to come here and hide out during the battle. The Dark Lord will be most displeased."
Sirius wondered if the Dark Lord would be irked with him, Hermione, or both of them. He hoped that he would never have to find out. Maybe Dumbledore liked fighting the maniac, but he'd rather avoid the evil wizard. All he wanted in life was a beautiful woman by his side, a bottle of his favorite whiskey, and no war to be fighting in. It wasn't too much to wish for was it?
As they walked down the hallway she looked over at him, "For your sake let's hope that's it Hermione that comes to retrieve Thomas and not his father. I'd hate to see my beloved cousin slaughtered as a young man."
Sirius glared at her as he chose not to answer her verbally, though mentally he had to agree with what she said. He prayed to Merlin that Hermione would be protected during battle and that it would be her that came with news of Voldemort's death. However, he was glad that he wasn't gambling with anyone on the outcome of the battle, because he feared that The Order had bitten off more than it could chew.

Hermione stood only for a moment after seeing Sirius leave with Thomas by portkey. Mentally she had to get back into this game. She wasn't worried about Sirius showing up at the safe house with Narcissa, seeing that they were cousins. Now, the only thing she had to worry about was Tom's anger when he would see her and realize that she had not left the manor like he had told her to. She didn't care though; she wanted to be part of destroying The Order and Dumbledore. It was her right too, as she had been mistreated greatly by Dumbledore's actions.
She wandered up to the main area where she could hear the fighting happening. It was hard to see who was fighting whom, because the thick smoke from the curses being shot back and forth had set off small fires everywhere. She could see The Order wanted to not only kill Death Eaters, but also cause as much havoc as possible at the manor. She didn't want to rush into battle not knowing which side she was fighting against. The smoke filled her lungs making it hard to breathe as she tried not to cough. She felt the sweat trickle down her back, as the heat in the room intensified from the fires and spells.
She looped cautiously back around to a servant's hall. She pressed her back against the wall sliding cautiously, hoping to scope things out before being seen. Through the shouting she heard Tom's voice and she knew exactly to whom he was speaking.
"Dumbledore, we meet again. But no longer am I the boy that you can manipulate to your wants and needs." Tom threw a curse at the old wizard, who easily blocked it.
"I know who you've become and that's why I'm here to stop you, Tom." Dumbledore shot back a blasting spell that Tom brushed aside like it hadn't even been cast. The Dark Lord sneered at the old wizard at the use of his given, Muggle name.
Hermione could see the two powerful wizards were just toying with each other. Other fighters from both sides were ignoring them, all knowing that no one should or would be foolish enough to interfere in this battle between them. Both Dumbledore and Tom looked tired, and she could see blood running down the side of Dumbledore's face, which only made him look more old and tired, but knew that no one should ever underestimate the man.
As she stood mesmerized by the fight, a hand came around to cover her mouth, before she could say a word she felt a well-muscled body slide in behind her.
"Do not say a word and do not try to interfere." Lucius Malfoy's drawling words whispered, his breath hot against her face. "You should not even be here Hermione. Your place is with the Dark Lord's son, protecting him at the safe house. He will be most displeased when he sees you disobeyed him. You of all people should know better than to go against his strict orders."
She tried to respond, but couldn't say a word with his hand pressed so tight against her mouth. Hermione wondered what he would do if she bit him, but didn't want to take the chance while she also felt the wizard's wand poking into her side.
"You will not move from this spot. If you show yourself, you will distract The Dark Lord and give Dumbledore the advantage." The words though true, made her shake with anger. Her place was by his side. She had been a part of Tom's life, fighting by his side many years before Lucius was even born.
It was hard to watch Tom and Dumbledore fighting, their wands locked on each other, shooting one curse after another. All it would take is one split second of hesitation blocking Dumbledore's spell, and he'd be dead.
"I can't just stand here and watch Tom be killed." Hermione felt Lucius flinch when she used The Dark Lord's given name. She knew that she was the only one that was given permission to use his given, Muggle name.
"How are you so sure that it will be The Dark Lord that will die? Do you lack faith in your mate that he can't defeat your enemy?" Lucius tutted in her ear with amused mirth.
The question was given with a sense of challenge, tinged with humor. Only Lucius Malfoy would think it was humorous that his master's woman didn't believe in him. This lot had a strange sense of jealously towards one another. All of the Death Eater's were jealous of each other, and always vying to be taken into The Dark Lord's confidence. Even Hermione was seen as a threat, especially to Lucius and Bellatrix.
"No, I do not lack faith in The Dark Lord," she hissed back at him. "Why are you back here hiding away with me? Shouldn't you be out there fighting the blood traitors?" She looked back at Lucius. He glanced down at her raising his aristocratic eyebrow at her question. "You're not afraid are you and prefer to be a coward?"
Lucius froze behind her, twirling her around to face him. "I am never afraid of fighting." His hand came up, gripping her chin painfully in his hand. "Don't ever challenge me by calling me a coward." Lucius pushed her away as he left the hiding space and entered back into the fight. Hermione landed hard against the wall, sneering at how she had manipulated the great Lord Malfoy.

Hours had gone by and still no one else had come to the safe house. Sirius, baby Thomas, his cousin Narcissa Malfoy, and her infant son, Draco were still the only ones there. They had stayed in their respective rooms for many hours until hunger, boredom, and worry made them escape their bedroom suites.
"So, have you heard anything?" Sirius asked Narcissa as they sat down for an early dinner. Narcissa sat stoically, trying to listen and not react to the question.
"No. I would think you'd be grateful we haven't heard from anyone at the Manor. " She delicately nibbled at her broccoli looking like she was eating something nasty.
"Why would I be grateful? Every second goes by where my mind is telling me that Hermione could be hurt or dead." Sirius's words were hissed out angrily. "Each moment I think that I should have stayed there and fought back against your Dark Lord and sent Hermione here to safety with her son. It's killing me Narcissa." He threw his fork down on the table and he grabbed his wine glass and took a long drink.
"For what it's worth Sirius, I don't think you are a coward." Narcissa said softly to him. "Its takes bravery to come here with the Dark Lord's son and assist Hermione in defying his direct orders."
Sirius started to chuckle, "You may think it brave, while others may think it's a sign of stupidity. However, I would do it all over again to help a friend. Though, if I don't see her here within the hour, I want to return and help end this whole fiasco." He stood, dropping his napkin on the table, and bowed to Narcissa. "Farewell cousin, until we meet again."
Narcissa sighed as he left the dining room. "What a fool. Regardless of what he does, he'll find himself on the wrong side."
