Chapter 72
Welkin Storms the Gates of Hell - Part 1
Where had the cursed woman disappeared? One minute she was spotted in this hallway, and the next, she was nowhere to be seen. Yaxley and Thorfinn Rowle imagined the displeasure of The Dark Lord if they returned to Malfoy Manor without her.
They were discussing whether to expand their search when a shaft of light struck the wall halfway down the hall, and Welkin Snape emerged from a doorway that had not been there seconds before and vanished as soon as she emerged from it. She spotted them and ran in the opposite direction. She made it to the end of the hall before one of their spells struck her in the back and she soundlessly crumpled to the floor.

Welkin woke up in an overstuffed featherbed, dazed and startled to find herself in one of the upstairs rooms she recognized from her last visit to Malfoy Manor. It was a bad sign, since never had a visit to the estate turned out well for her. Even worse, this time she had received no formal invitation, not even one she dared not refuse. The faint soreness between her shoulder blades told her she was here due to a magical attack and abduction, which she barely remembered.
She tried the heavy carved wooden door, but it was as she expected, locked tight.
Where were her clothes? Gone. In their place, she was barefoot and dressed in a simple long white nightgown. How long had she been here? The reason that she was here, she could make a good guess. Voldemort must have discovered her ancestry, since he now essentially controlled the Ministry. But, what had he done with Severus? There was no way that her Severus would not be actively seeking her location, if he were able.
Her exploration of the writing desk in the corner of the room answered one of her questions. According to the desk calendar, it was May the 3rd. She had been unconscious for two days.
The bad man had you in a big house, she remembered Sully had said. Moreover, the bad man had hurt his Daddy. She prayed that Voldemort had not managed to accomplish the latter task yet.
A House Elf popped in out of thin air to retrieve the untouched tray of food on the desk. He looked startled and worried when Welkin attempted to engage him in conversation. It was only minutes until he was back with a fresh tray. She tried again to question him, but he did not know anything, or he had been ordered not to tell her anything. All that he would tell her was that he had told the Mistress that she was awake.
That must mean she could soon expect a visit from Narcissa. Maybe she could get Narcissa to tell her something about Voldemort's immediate plans for her and Severus. Maybe she could talk Narcissa into helping her. She sat in the windowless, if spacious, cell of a room and drank some of the water on the tray while she waited impatiently. She did not have long to wait.
However, it was not Narcissa who walked in when the massive door swung open at last, but Voldemort, the devil himself.
"So pleased to see you are awake at last, my dear. I apologize for the clumsy way you were brought here. I expressly ordered that you not be harmed. Those responsible will be properly punished," Voldemort assured her.
"Stop pretending to care about my comfort. I don't give a shit about that. Where's Severus?" Welkin rose from her seat. Did the fool expect her to exchange unimportant chitchat with him?
Voldemort chuckled. "You're considerably more direct than you were in our last conversation. Bluntness becomes you."
He took a step towards her, and she took a step backwards.
"Your loyalty to your husband is quite admirable," Voldemort told her. "It is also quite problematic to my plans for you," he added. "That loyalty must be transferred to me, your future consort."
"Fuck you!" Welkin exploded. Obviously, she might as well be truthful with the monster. "I could never love a swine like you! I'll always love Severus!"
"You misunderstand me, my dear. It is not your love I require. I require only your loyalty to my mission... and your body, which I already have. Your love is of no value to me," Voldemort stated equally bluntly.
"Oh, is that ALL you want?" Welkin taunted. "My loyalty? You might as well kill me now. You'll never get that either!"
"You haven't yet served your purpose. That would be shortsighted of me to kill you. I do want one other thing, since you asked. Your wand. Where is it? You did not have it with you when you were captured," Voldemort said.
"It's with my jewelry." Welkin said immediately.
"Where is your jewelry?" he asked.
"I don't know." Welkin actually smirked at him, as if aware of something he could not know.
Voldemort scanned her thoughts, and to his surprise, found she was inexplicably telling the truth. She both knew and did not know where the objects were, even though she had hidden them at Hogwarts.
Her taunting annoyed him. He closed the distance between them. "Perhaps you'd like to see what delights the future holds for you soon." The way he emphasized, "delights" let her know before he showed her that there would be nothing at all delightful about the knowledge.
He touched her forehead with one misshapen claw of a hand and her mind was instantly filled with disgusting, horrifying images of what he intended to do to her.
"NO!" a voice in her head shouted and something forcefully pushed him away from her, breaking his contact with her.
Voldemort felt the forceful push of energy at his chest that made him stumble backward. It surprised and startled him. No one had ever been able to do that to him.
"Did you do that? Did Severus teach you that?" Voldemort stammered. "I was right to think it might be time to deal with him."
"Don't you hurt him!" Welkin advanced on him this time. "If you hurt him, I swear that it won't matter how many Horcruxes you make! If Harry Potter doesn't kill you, I WILL! No matter what it takes!"
Recovering himself, Voldemort ignored her impassioned outburst. "I have no doubt you would try. I would stay and debate the issue with you, my dear, but I am already a little late for my meeting with your beloved Severus. Perhaps he will be more reasonable than you seem prepared to be. If not, I assure you; I'll do much more than hurt him.
Welkin rushed at him in fury, but he immobilized her easily as he made his exit, and the heavy door slammed shut.
"Let me out! Let me out! Don't you hurt him!" Welkin screamed, pounding futilely against the door. She continued to scream and pound at the door until she was hoarse and her fists were sore and bruised.
Roughly an hour later, the door swung open again. This time it really was Narcissa Malfoy.
"Please, Narcissa... Where is Severus? Let me go to him!" Welkin pleaded.
"I want you to know that I'm doing this for Severus. For what he did for Draco. Not for you," Narcissa told her. "Voldemort is meeting him at the Shrieking Shack. Bella told me he's going to kill him. If you hurry, you may be able to save him."
"But, how..." Welkin began.
"They captured a winged horse. It's chained on the east lawn. It's your best chance at getting there quickly. Now, knock me out and go!"
"I won't forget this, Narcissa," Welkin told her just before she cast the Stupefy Spell.
**************************************************************
Welkin ran barefoot through the rose arbor, using the overgrowth on the structure for cover. The briers and brambles caught at her legs through the gauzy white nightgown, shredding it in places and dotting it red with her blood.
She was in luck. When she spotted the Winged Horse, it was tethered, but unguarded. She dashed across the clearing. As she got closer, she saw that the animal looked familiar to her. It was Black Pegasus. They must have stolen him from Hagrid.
"Poor boy. What have they done to you?" Welkin whispered to him. There were big welts on both of his flanks. If she had any other choice, she would just have released him and not considered riding him in his condition.
She unhooked the chain from his bridle. He nickered at her in grateful greeting, obviously anxious to be on the wing. When she could not manage to mount him, he knelt to make it easier for her, and she leaped onto his back and draped her arm around his broad neck, grasping his thick mane tightly with one fist.
"Let's go, boy!" Welkin urged, and they took flight. She was too anxious to make it to Severus to indulge her fear of heights.
As they started to top the tree line, Welkin glimpsed quickly moving dark shapes closing on them. Sparks started exploding around them.
"Don't damage her! The Dark Lord will Cruciatus us if we hurt her! Glancing blows only! Knock her off the horse!"
Maybe they had to be restrained, but she did not. One of the Death Eaters managed to grab her arm and tugged at her, trying to unseat her. "Sectumsempra!" she shouted and invisible razors slashed through his arm, making him scream in pain and turn her loose.
Black Pegasus kicked out in flight and his powerful hind legs connected with another of the Death Eaters who was close behind them. A scream of pain wrenched from his throat as he spiraled downward out of sight.
"Good boy!" Welkin praised, just before a bolt of energy hit her in the side and unseated her. She began to fall from a great height, picking up speed, headed rapidly toward the ground.
Bad people flyed after you, Mama. You falled down a long way! Welkin remembered again what Sully had said.
A scant 100 yards from the ground, the remaining Death Eater pursuer threw a net over her. It tightened around her as she struggled against it.
"Let me go! I have to get to Severus! Damn you to hell! I have to fly! I have to fly!" Welkin shrieked at him repeatedly. Her form began to shift and her voice became more high-pitched until it no longer sounded human... until it no longer was human. It was the gurgling croak of a great black Raven.
Struggling against the restraint of the netting, Welkin lashed out with her powerful talons and clawed at the Death Eater's face. His blood gushed over her talons as she ripped at his eyes, and he screamed in fear and pain. He let go of the net to clutch at his face blindly. Welkin escaped the net, spread her glossy black wings, and for the first time in her life, flew without fear. Mama was black. She flyed up!
Free of the last of her pursuers, Welkin headed swiftly for the Shrieking Shack.

Voldemort's sudden savage attack, using Nagini, had taken Snape by surprise. So much so that all of his and Welkin's plans for just this possibility were to no avail. He lay in a pool of his own rapidly congealing blood, and he felt the life ebbing from his body. He could not even reach the bezoar in his pocket.
Snape had tried to get Harry Potter to retrieve it from his pocket for him, but the dunderhead had totally misunderstood his meaning when he told him "Look at me." Then he had lost consciousness from weakness before he could plant the image in his mind. The Herculean effort of relaying much needed memories and information to Potter had sapped his remaining strength. The boy had thought him dead. Now, unable to speak or move, he almost was.
Welkin, Severus thought. Forgive me. I have broken my promise to you... and to Sullivan. Forgive me, my love. Hopefully, what he had taught Welkin would help keep them safe when he was not there to do so.
He remembered Sullivan's demand; Try HARDER, Daddy!
He was trying his hardest to stay awake. Hoping against hope for rescue. Only Welkin's stubborn insistence on him drinking their tonic every day had enabled him to cling to life this long, he realized. However, it was only strong enough to prolong the inevitable. He felt Nagini's poison still burning through his body, pushing him towards certain death. Soon, there would be no resisting it.
Make me proud, my son, Severus thought, just before losing his battle with consciousness again. Remember that I love you and your mother, always
