"That we know of for sure? Fifteen. Eight of them are still alive," he glanced over at Harry. "What do you think, brother? Time to shut them up for good?"
"If we want to keep what we're doing any kind of a secret, then yeah, I think they need to be silenced."
Roark returned to his desk, sat, and reached to pull open a drawer as his other hand found a pen. He never saw Ardyn tense, though several of the others did. They shared looks with each other, each of them giving brief nods as Roark drew out a sheet of paper and began to write quickly, but neatly.
"Aiden." He held out the paper once he had finished.
Aiden took it, read the names, and where within the Colonial Garrison they worked. He gave a nod, getting to his feet. "Right then. Jaden. Kaden. Taylor. Gwydion. Morgan. Dylan. Colten. Justyn. Dante. You're with me. Dante, call Trentyn, tell him we need him and our partners back here asap."
"On it," he said, reaching for the communicator on his belt.
"Ardyn," Roark turned to look at him as those Aiden had named got to their feet and headed out of the office, talking quietly. "Pick out fifteen to twenty of your best people. I want you to be ready when we call for you."
He nodded as he got to his feet. "So you planning to move against him full force?"
"We are. It's time we put an end to this once and for all. We'll start by closing down the rest of his businesses, and once we get those landing points, we'll capture his shipments."
"And the Lestrange's?"
"Harry and I will deal with Rodolphus and Rabastan when the time comes, Ardyn. You just worry about your assigned task, and let us worry about the rest."
"Alright then, I'll just go get the team together," he said, giving him a smile, though inside he was seething with fury at the no-nonsense tone Roark was using with him as he turned to the door.
Roark was already on to something else and therefore paid no attention to him as he left the office, though the others certainly did. "Roark?"
Roark lifted his head to look at Logan, silver eyes meeting blue, as he shook his head with regret. "As much as I would like to, Logan, we can't. You know as well as I do that everything we have is circumstantial."
Logan gave a nod as Apollo again spoke up defensively. "Or maybe, as I said earlier, you're just plain wrong."
It was Zac who spoke up next, surprising his brother. "As much as I hate to say it, Apollo," he said slowly, softly, his eyes turning from the door to look at his brother. "I don't think they're wrong."
"I'm afraid I'm going to have to agree," Boomer said after sharing a look with Starbuck, who had shrugged. Pushing away from the wall he had been leaning against, watching silently, he moved toward his long-time friend. "There's something...not right. Something changed...different. I can't place exactly what it is, but it's definitely there."
"No one wishes more than Harry and I that we were wrong, Uncle."
Apollo looked over at Zac, who gave him a nod, his expression serious. He looked to Boomer, then to Starbuck next, and saw the same expression on both their faces. "Fine," he said with a regretful sigh, "I'll see what I can do to find you all the proof you need, but first, I need you to swear to me you are absolutely positive about this?"
"Positive beyond a shadow of a doubt. He's just that good at hiding and covering his tracks," Jordan said from where he sat. "There is information, Apollo, that is still reaching Tom Riddle that should not be. Information that is known only to us."
"Then I have this," Roark reached into his jacket pocket, drew out a small slip of paper, and handed it over to him. "Destroy that once you've read it."
Taking the paper, he unfolded it and read the words on it, his face paling as his head jerked up. "Where did you get this?"
"It was left in my apartment a few days ago. If it's from who I THINK it is, then the information that note contains, should it fall into the wrong hands, could get him killed. I will not betray his trust by exposing him."
"Him who? And how do you know you can trust him?"
A smile. "I never said I trusted him, Uncle."
That raised a brow. "Who is he?"
Roark shook his head. "I can't answer that."
"Not can't, WON'T."
Roark met his Uncle's blue eyes. "Alright, yes, I won't. If I AM right about who left that for me, then he went to a great deal of personal risk to find that and get it to me. We don't have many really good snitches, but this one...He was Kale's, and as nervous as he is...I was surprised he went to this trouble. I WILL NOT betray the trust he placed in me."
Apollo could only nod. As he re-read the words on the paper, both Boomer and Starbuck moved closer to see what the words were, their eyes widening. 'Pain meds. Ardyn couldn't get what he wanted from the C.M.O on Base, so he went to Riddle. They reached an...agreement.'
Before the eyes of those still in the office, he tossed the paper into the metal trash receptacle, pulled it away from the desk, and drew his laser from its holster. Adjusting the power level, he fired a low-level laser blast into it.
"This may take us some time," he said quietly.
Alexei lay a hand on his shoulder and gave it a squeeze. "I know, Apollo. All of us who served with him aboard the Galactica know just how hard this is. Friend or not, this has got to be stopped, and we, as his friends need to see that he gets the help he needs."
Apollo gave a nod. "He killed Kale."
"Yes, he did, and he will have to answer for that, but first we need to get him cleaned up."
"Agreed. Starbuck, Boomer, Zac, let's go."
Once the four of them left the office, Roark's head fell back against his chair, his eyes closing against the pain building behind his eyes, his temples beginning to throb with the new headache that had developed. Microns {seconds} later, he felt fingers sifting through his hair and opened his eyes to meet his brother's worried gaze.
"What is it?" came the question.
"He's so damned conflicted. Even after reading what was on that paper, he's more determined to look for the proof that Ardyn is innocent."
"Which we all know he will not find."
A nod. "It's going to affect his faith in the Warrior's Code."
"It affects all of us when we find a warrior who has gone bad, Rory," Bill said softly, "and part of why we in Counter-Intelligence do what we do."
"Does it ever get any easier?" he asked of them.
"When it turns out to be friends that have gone bad...people we trust with our lives? No, I'm afraid it will never get any easier."
