“Yous can connect with her Sir, you is got the strength of Binding. Yous thinks hard enough, then can apparates to her.”
The two wizards looked down startled at Kreatcher who appeared out of nowhere.
“How Kreatcher? Tell me how.” Severus demanded.
“Just closes you eyes and thinks of Lou, thinks of you love for her and apparate. Where she is, you will be.”
“Severus looked at the elf for a moment, his eyes narrowed, then he closed them and thought of Lou, he thought of what his life would be like if she wasn’t in it, how she’d sacrificed herself to help him rid the world of Voldemort, how she’d given him her total trust and then given him herself completely to him. Then he apparated.
“Severus. Severus.” Lou screamed when she saw his dark shape appear in front of a set of gates at the end of a long sweeping drive. She ran, ran like her heels were on fire when she saw him and realised instantly who it was.
Severus was stunned when he appeared at LeStrange Grange. This place had been closed for years by the ministry. It was supposed to be warded against anyone entering the place.
He ran towards her, his eyes flitting across the grounds and Grange entrance for any sign of life. The place was almost eerily quite but for Lou running to him and sobbing. She almost knocked him on his back with the impact as she flung her arms about his waist. She babbled incoherently, trying to tell him what happened but made absolutely no sense whatsoever through her sobs.
Severus was unwilling to hang around for an explanation, he picked her up and apparated them straight back to Hogwarts.
“That was quick Severus.” The headmaster said, surprised. He’d not even had a chance to re-enter the grounds after the Potion Master left.
“Fortunately she was waiting for me. Lets get her inside and calm her down, then hopefully we can get an explanation.”
The two men headed straight for the main entrance, a rather large crowd waiting for them as they entered. Everyone knew about Lou’s sudden disappearance and were eager to see her return safely.
Rita Skeeter hurried down the steps and was about to open her mouth when Albus raised a hand to her. One look in his eyes was enough to halt the woman and shut her up before she could even speak.
Severus headed straight for his rooms, Albus beside him already lowering the Potion Masters wards so they could enter. As soon as they were both inside Albus closed, locked and warded the door then added a silencing spell so strong no one but him could remove it.
Severus laid Lou on his sofa and rushed to his personal potions store, removed a calming draught and took it back to his study.
“Drink.” He told Lou, holding the bottle to her lips.
“No, don’t want to …to sl …sleep, I have to te …tell you what …”
“It is not a sleeping potion now drink it.” Severus demanded.
Lou’s breath hitched a few times before she could actually swallow and lost some of the potion when she choked on it and coughed, spraying Albus.
“Sor …sorry.” She cried, trying to get her wits about her and swallow some more of the foul tasting liquid.
Albus wiped his face and smiled at her. “It’s quite alright, just do as Severus says and drink my dear, you will feel much calmer when you have taken it.”
Severus kept an arm behind her shoulders to steady her as she finished the potion, then laid her down while it took effect. It wasn’t long before Lou was pushing herself into a sitting position, her sobs easing and her breathing more steady.
“That woman, the one from the ceremony, it was her Severus.”
“There were many women present that day Lou, which particular one are you referring to?”
Lou turned red and lowered her eyes. “The one who …in the aisle …she …she said she was Voldemort’s favourite.”
“Bellatrix LeStrange.” Severus hissed. “Did she do anything to you? Are you hurt? Was anyone else there? Where is she now? How did you get away?” he asked firing one question straight after the other.”
“Erm I, Severus I …did something bad. Really, really bad. Dark magic bad.”
Severus hooked a finger under her chin and lifted her face. “Look at me.” He said gently.
Lou brought her eyes to meet his and was immediately accosted with Legillimens.
Severus watched the events from where Lou left the dungeons corridor, heading for the party, her abduction then nothing until she awoke to find herself bound hand and foot in a small cell with Bellatrix LeStrange standing beside her. His eyes widened when he realised what the deranged witch was intending to do to his wife, then they widened even more when he discovered how Lou dealt with her. He watched her take various forms until she entered the room full of Deatheaters and changed into the Nundu then effectively killed the lot of them in a matter of moments. He stayed in her mind up until she saw him at the gate to the Grange and pulled out.
Lou felt groggy, she’d not been prepared for his invasion of her mind and the calming draught kept her head fuzzy enough that she couldn’t be bothered to try and block him.
“I would like you to put this memory into a pensive for the Headmaster and myself to view. Do you think you could do it now?”
“I dunno, I’ve never done it before.”
Severus and Albus showed her how to bring a memory to the forefront of her mind and remove it with her wand and she managed it on the second attempt.
Then she watched as they both dipped their wands into the silvery substance and seemed to go into a kind of trance. At least that was how it looked to her.
The two wizards were amazed at the way Lou concentrated her powers and froze the female Deatheaters eyes and brain. Then using her shape shifting abilities to escape and kill around seventy Deatheaters in total counting those who entered the Grange as Lou was about to leave the first time.
“How ingenious becoming a Nundu.” Albus stated when they came out of the pensive. “That was a brilliant idea. I shall inform the Ministry immediately that they can collect the bodies from LeStrange Grange, you did very well Lou. Now the Ministry will want to know exactly what happened in there and we cannot allow them to know you used dark magic, although strictly speaking you are under age and cannot be put in Azkaban for it. Also you have done them a great service by eliminating the majority of their most wanted list, but they will know now that you can shape shift and you will need to say that you only discovered your ability at that time. They will expect you to register yourself officially at the first opportunity. As for Bellatrix, you will tell the Ministry she argued with one of the other Deatheaters and he cast a the freezing spell on her. As an underage witch that is also Bound to her husband, they cannot legally force you to give them your memory in a pensive, nor can they perform Legillimens or give you Veritaserum to make you tell them everything. Other than that, you can tell them the truth. I shall stall them for a couple of days, saying that you are too upset to speak with anyone at the moment but then you will have to see them.” The Headmaster told her.
“It’s alright Headmaster, I’d rather tell them now and get it over with. If I have to wait I’ll be a nervous wreck by the time they come for me.”
“Lou are you sure about this?” Severus asked her. “You can have more time if you want it.”
“No, like I said, I’ll be thinking about it and worrying. Best to do it now. Please Severus.” She asked him.
“Very well, Headmaster, if you would care to contact them now, I shall take her through to her rooms and put her to bed. They can speak to her there with both of us present. I refuse to have her dragged down to Ministry headquarters after what she has been through.”
Albus used the floo to go to his office and contact the ministry. Aurors were at Hogwarts within the hour once it was confirmed that seventy three dead Deatheaters had somehow managed to breach the wards at LeStrange Grange and had apparently been occupying the place for a number of weeks.
The investigating aurors were none too happy about having to conduct their interview at Hogwarts, or that they had to allow Severus and Albus to witness the interrogation. But Severus used his right of Binding and Albus stated she was also underage and reminded them what a great service she’d done the Ministry by eradicating the Deatheaters. She and Severus were also hero’s because they had already defeated Voldemort, they should be grateful to her.
Kingsley Shacklebolt was head auror at the Ministry now and wholeheartedly agreed with the two wizards. It did not take long to take Lou’s story and after giving her a sly wink he told the others they could leave.
Once alone with Lou, Severus and Albus, he got the real story.
“Wow, that was some dark Magic young lady, remind me to never get on the wrong side of you. I am glad to see you have not lost your fiery spirit being married to the Professor here.” he said chuckling.
“Do you mind Kingsley, she is difficult enough to control as it is without you encouraging her.” Severus told his comrade, a wry expression on his face.
Lou gave a big yawn and was asleep before any of them even left the room.
Severus decided to leave the adjoining door open that night when he finally retired to his bed, just in case Lou woke up scared or needed attention.
Albus announced to all those waiting for news that Lou was well and was now sleeping, before sending everyone off either to their beds or their homes and thanking them for their concern.
The following day the wizarding world was buzzing at the news that Louhi Snape had been abducted by Deatheaters and had effectually murdered the lot of them single handed.
Rite Skeeter had a marvellous time reporting that she was on the scene at Hogwarts when she was abducted and returned, no worse for wear. No one knew as yet how the young witch had managed to overpower so many of Voldemort’s ex- partisans, though a Ministry insider reported that only one of the bodies, a Bellatrix LeStrange, was marked in any way. Apparently her brain was frozen. The other Deatheaters looked to have fallen where they stood with nothing more than expressions of surprise. No evidence of the killing curse was found and no magical trace of any curses other than those used by the Deatheaters themselves.
When aurors checked Madam Snapes wand with the Prior Incantatem only a harmless unlocking spell and several cleaning spells were found to have been used.
Still it was feared now that Madam Snape was clearly being targeted by Deatheaters and would need to be guarded closely until the rest were rounded up. It was believed that around two hundred Deatheaters were still on the loose and the Ministry were no closer to finding them now then they were during Voldemort’s reign.
“That settles it Headmaster, she is not safe in this country at all. I could have her cloistered at Prince Manor, but you know as well as I that she will go insane on her own. At least if she is at the Karkias Academy in Finland, she will be safe. I have contacted Mr Ervast and he assures me that security is at it’s premium there. Karkias may be a small academy, but it is the finest in the world and admits only those of royal blood or those closely related to them. As a Nilsen, Lou does have a distant connection to their royal family, though if you ask me to explain it I will refuse, it is too complicated. She will soon make new friends and has already proven that the language is not a barrier.”
Although I hate to admit it Severus, you are right, when are you going to inform her of your plans?”
Severus rubbed the back of his neck uncomfortably. “I’m not, at least not until her journey is imminent.”
“You think that wise Severus?”
No I do not, but at the same time, do you really wish to resort to using the Proximity chain again? I can think of no other solution to prevent her from trying to run away, and I am certain that she will attempt to do so if she discovers what we are about beforehand. Now she is competent with her shape shifting abilities she will not hesitate to use them to her advantage. I shall attempt to keep her occupied that day, if you would be so kind as to greet Mr Ervast and explain the situation, Kreatcher and Pegnose can be told to pack her things once I have removed her from the castle for the day. I dare say they will insist on going with her.”
“I would think so yes, and the elfin. Hogwarts is not going to be the same without Louhi.”
“You think I am not aware of that Headmaster?” Severus stated with a scowl.
“Perhaps during the holidays you could visit with her.”
“No. It would only serve to remind me … us, of what we cannot have, it is better to have a clean break until she is truly ready.”
“It is going to break her heart, you do know that.”
“Headmaster this is difficult enough as it is, if it is your intention to make it even more so, you are succeeding. I do not wish to discuss it further.”
Severus was in a foul mood for the rest of the day, all four houses lost a humongous amount of points if they so much as breathed in his presence. Even Lou lost twenty points in potions class because she blinked when he spoke to her.
Only Albus knew the reason for his unpleasant disposition and did his best to smooth things over with the other heads of house by awarding points for inane things; like smiling in the corridor and showing individuality when someone’s tie was not fastened properly.
When Lou was told to go to Professor Snapes office on Saturday morning she was expecting a telling off, though for what she didn’t know. The mere fact he’d been in such a lousy frame of mind the last couple of days hardly endeared him to her. She’d wanted to talk with him about what happened when Bella kidnapped her, but all she received for that was a dressing down for being disobedient and trying to sneak back to the celebrations instead of going to bed as she’d been told to do. She prayed the chair wouldn’t be waiting in the middle of his office.
“I wish to go to the Manor today, just to ensure that everything is being taken care of, as my wife I feel you should accompany me and I can reset the wards to accept you as well as myself.”
“Really, so if I go there again I’ll be able to go outside and stuff without asking you first?”
“Something along those lines. Go put on some robes, I refuse to take you in muggle attire.”
Lou skipped off to her rooms to get changed while Severus instructed Kreatcher and Pegnose to pack up all of her things and their own as well. Lou was not to be told about this.
At Prince Manor, Severus reset the wards that would allow Lou to move about the manor freely and have access to the gardens whenever she wished. He did not alter the apparition wards since she was not yet old enough to apparate anyway.
Tilly brought them a picnic outside under the gazebo near the lake. Severus placed strong warming charms around the walls of the gazebo so they would not freeze, it was late January after all.
“Thanks for this Severus, it’s nice just you and me.”
“I find it quite pleasant sitting here with you, in years to come we can do this often.”
“I wish we could do it more often now, maybe we can come here in the holidays and have another picnic, what do you think?” She asked excitedly.
“I think it is unlikely that will happen, this is merely a one off to compensate for what happened to you last weekend.”
“Oh.” She said disappointed. “Severus, where will I go in the summer holidays? Hermione said everyone goes home then and I don’t have anywhere to go. Will I be at number twelve?”
“That is not something you need worry about, alternative arrangements will be made nearer the time.”
“What kind of arrangements? Will I get to see you?”
“As I said, arrangement will be made, and no, you will not see me. As for number twelve, it is unlikely you will be going there either. No more questions Lou, it is time to head back to Hogwarts.”
Lou’s face was a mile long as they collected their cloaks and he apparated them back to the school. Some of her friends were already talking about what they would be doing over summer and Lou didn’t even know where she would be put. Would she be on her own? She hoped not. Who would she be with if not Severus? What if it was someone she didn’t get on with? It was gonna be horrible.
Severus led her inside. “Give me your travelling cloak and go directly to the Great Hall for lunch, I wish to speak with you in my office as soon as you finish.” He didn’t want her entering her rooms and discovering they were now bare of her personal possessions.
“Okay, and thanks again for today, it was nice.” Lou told him with a smile.
“You are most welcome, now off you go.”
He waited until she entered the hall and headed to his own rooms. Albus and Mr Ervast were waiting for him.
“Professor Snape, it is nice meeting you again. I have been learning your language, it is very difficult.”
“You speak it extremely well Mr Ervast, much better than I speak your own native language. Are all the arrangements made?”
“Oh yes, we shall be travelling by portkey after lunch. Madam Snape will be settled into Karkias Academy by this evening. Is she very excited?”
“No Mr Ervast she is not, at this moment in time she does not know she is leaving Hogwarts. For reasons better known to the Headmaster and myself, it was considered better that she be told at the time of departure.”
“Oh dear, it is fortunate they have good security at Karkias, you did mention in your letter that her powers are very strong yes?”
“Indeed they are Mr Ervast, and her control of her shape shifting abilities are now at a premium. However it is necessary that she stay in Finland, her life is in danger here until the Ministry get off their backsides and retrieve the remaining Deatheaters. Perhaps the promise of a visit to her family home during the summer will help to appease her somewhat.”
Lou sat with her friends eating lunch, having no idea of the plans being made for her behind her back.
Severus retrieved a strong calming draught from his stores and slipped it into a glass of pumpkin juice ready for when Lou entered his office. They would tell her Ervast was visiting England and called to enquire after her welfare. While the wizards drank coffee, Lou would drink the laced pumpkin juice and then be told the real reason for Ervast’s visit.
