Chapter 73: Armistice
Racing around a corner and looking behind her, Hermione ran smack into someone. Of course that someone she ran into had to be The Dark Lord himself. Tom grabbed on to her shoulders as she almost fell to the floor. His wide eyes and rounded mouth showed his surprise at seeing her. An explosion in the grand room had given him a chance to retreat and take a breather before going back to face Dumbledore. Both sides had declared an Armistice to gather their dead. Hermione, watching the fight, had backed off as the smoke made her cough and feel nauseous. She also knew it wouldn't be good for the new baby breathing in all of the smoke.
"Fuck Hermione! What are you doing here?" Tom's words were shouted in her face as he shook her. "I told you to leave with Thomas." His anger wasn't the true anger he usually showed to wayward Death Eaters or mad, wizards like Dumbledore. No, this anger was one of concern when it came to Hermione or the baby. He grabbed her arm dragging her down the hallway going into an empty room and locking the door. Warding the room he pulled her down onto the bed hugging her to him.
"Why? What happened? Is the baby OK?" Tom's anxious face glared down at her.
"Yes, he's fine." Hermione looked down at her hands trying to think of how to phrase where Thomas was at the moment without giving away Sirius. She also didn't want her lover digging around in her mind for any information. The way she felt today, she wasn't sure how easy it would be to block him from her thoughts.
"He's at a safe house with Narcissa Malfoy. She took Draco and Thomas. I came back to fight by your side. This fight against Dumbledore is mine as well as it's yours, Please, don't deny me this chance to help rid our world of this menacing wizard. "
All of the anger left his face as he peered down at her. His hand came up to smooth down her cheek. "I wanted you safe, you and the baby."
"The baby is safe Tom. I made sure he was away from Dumbledore and The Order." Hermione tried reassuring her lover that his son was completely safe.
"Not that baby, this baby." Tom's hand went down to the curve of her starting to swell stomach. He smiled when he saw the surprise on Hermione's face. His hand caressed over the place where the new baby was growing.
"Did you think I wouldn't know? I know your body better than you do my love." His smile let her know he wasn't angry and she was able to take a slow, cleansing breath.
"I was going to tell you today Tom, but The Order attacked and I had to get Thomas to safety. You're not angry are you?" Her question was asked with a plea as her eyes looked deeply into Toms'.
His lips descended on hers, wordlessly answering her question, "No, my beautiful lady. You are giving me another child, how could I ever be angry with you." Hermione's heart swelled with joy when she heard his words.
"I know the timing isn't perfect, but I wanted to show you that my life is yours. I choose you always my Lord. Even with all of the turmoil from this war, Thomas has brought so much joy into our lives. I know that another baby will only add to that."
Tom brought his hand up to cup her cheek, his thumb trailing over her lips.
"I still want you to leave and go to where Thomas is. There is more than just your life you need to worry about now." Hermione could tell that he'd just issued a command, and wasn't asking.
Hermione wanted to protest, but before she could say a word, he kissed her soundly till she was squirming under him.
"Together we could be stronger against Dumbledore." Her eyes pleaded along with her words.
"My love, I would be too worried about you and the baby if you stayed. I cannot be distracted right now. That idiotic man knows that you are my only weakness." His hand continued smoothing down the side of her face, until he pulled her up.
"I need to go and take care of this. Dumbledore needs to die and I'm the only one that can do that." Tom's eyes met hers again stating his mission right now.
He hugged Hermione close to him, laying his chin on top of her head. They stood for a few moments more just holding each other, a moment of peace before more chaos entered their lives.
"Hermione, look at me," he stood before her where their eyes met, "I can't lose you again…I won't lose you again. Promise me you will leave the manor and wait until I come to get you."
Feeling her emotions getting carried away, she started crying again, "I promise Tom. I'll leave to take care of both of our babies."
Tom smiled at her, kissed her once more, and then left, letting the silence in the room envelop Hermione in her sadness, leaving her feeling very much alone, emotionally as well as physically.
Hermione dropped back onto the bed to finish crying before she apparated back to the safe house. It would be hard leaving, but she would follow Tom's wishes. He was right, the baby she now carried was more important than anything else. If anything happened to Tom because of her staying, she would never be able to forgive herself. The memories of being held by Dumbledore on the Astronomy Tower still haunted her. Tom had been helpless to help her and Thomas. She never again wanted to put him in that kind of situation.

When Sirius entered Malfoy Manor he found The Order all sitting down and talking. His look of confusion must have shown on his face.
"Where have you been Black?" Mad Eye Moody growled at him.
"I was fighting two Death Eaters out in the garden and then it became very quiet. I came in to investigate, wondering if everyone was dead and I missed all of the action." Sirius tried to use his well-known humor to cover his earlier absence.
Mad Eye nodded, "This here's what's called an Armistice; we're all taking a much needed break in the battle. The Death Eaters and Voldemort retreated about half an hour ago, back to the south end of the manor. We have men posted all around so they don't sneak back on us."
Sirius nodded in understanding, as he couldn't help looking around at all of the men who were dead or wounded in the room. "Shouldn't we be taking the wounded to St. Mungos?"
"Some of the more seriously wounded have already been portkeyed there." Dumbledore came up behind him. "We are missing some of our key fighters though. Have you seen James and his unit of men? They had a very special assignment and they've not come back."
Sirius pretended to retie his laces on his boots. He knew better than to look Dumbledore in the face. The man was a legend when it came to his Legilimency. Only The Dark Lord was supposedly just as good a Legilimens, able to perform the spell with no incantation or wand.
"Last time I saw James was at the beginning when we all pushed into Malfoy Manor, and I haven't seen him since." He continued to fuss with his laces now on the other boot.
Looking up, he only glanced at Dumbledore who gave him a sour look of suspicion. "Let him know he is to report to me as soon as he can." Looking irritated, Dumbledore walked away to talk to other Order members.
Sirius couldn't care less what Dumbledore thought. He was an evil and vile man who wanted to kill an infant. If anyone should die today, it wasn't going to be Hermione's baby.
Thinking of Hermione, he became worried about where she was in this huge monstrosity of a house. His only thought now, was that he wanted to find her and take her back to the safe house. He should have never let her stay in the first place.
Leaving the main room, he took one more glance back at Dumbledore speaking to Moody, and walked quickly down the hallway. Sirius disillusioned himself so he could move closer to the enemy knowing he'd find Hermione there. It would be hard convincing her to leave her Dark Lord, but he was going to use Thomas as a source of persuasion as to why she shouldn't be here during the battle.
Hearing the laughter coming from the end of one hall woke him from his thoughts as he saw Yaxley and one of the Lestrange brothers helping themselves to a bevvy, which appeared to be Firewhiskey.
"Have you ever seen anything more blooming barmy than stopping in the middle of a battle?"
Yaxley took a swig of his drink, suddenly coughing when it went down the wrong pipe. Rodolphus hit Yaxley hard on his back, who dropped his glass, with it shattering on the tile floors.
Sirius meanwhile tiptoed over to another hallway as the two men laughed at their supposedly funny situation. Complete berks the both of them, Sirius thought as he walked away from them.
"Don't let The Dark Lord hear you say that Yaxley, or you'll be dead within seconds," Rodolphus said while chortling, and Sirius just shook his head. If this was some of the Death Eaters best men, then how in hell were they able to win so many battles over The Order? However, considering the Lestrange man was married to his nutter cousin, Bellatrix, no man would stay sane married to that skanky piece of shite. There was certainly no love lost between the two cousins. They had always argued growing up, and this had led to pure hate the past few years. In his mind, a dead Bellatrix was the only Bellatrix that this world needed.
Speaking of the devil, as if his thoughts had conjured the woman herself, Bellatrix was speeding down the hallway in a huff. Sirius observed as Bella opened up doors, looked in, slammed them shut, then snarling after each door didn't hold what she was looking for.
Another door closer to Sirius opened up and out walked The Dark Lord himself. How he wished he could take out the evil wizard right then, but he didn't want to risk getting harmed and not being able to take care of Hermione.
Much to Sirius's surprise, Bellatrix hid behind a large plant that could have covered Hagrid. Both he and his cousin watched as Voldemort strolled down the hall with a smile on his face. Now that was something you didn't see every day. Sirius had only seen The Dark Lord in battle a few times, and both instances had shown a fierce and calculating wizard, no smile in sight. What had made him smile? Maybe he had taken a much-needed piss during the Armistice; Merlin knows that was one thing that could distract a fighter terribly during any battle.
Bellatrix stuck her head out from the plant looking in both directions for anyone else in the vicinity. Seeing no one around, she gave one of her high-pitched, cackling laughs and strolled down to the door where Voldemort had just left. Puzzled, Sirius wondered what was making his crazy cousin so happy.
Bellatrix stood for a moment unraveling many wards from the closed doors.
"He doesn't think I know how he places his wards. Of course I know everything he does."
What a divvy she was to stand there and talk to herself, and then answer back in the process. What a bloody shame it was that he was related to that thing in the hallway.
"I'm going to make his life better today. He'll be grieving at first, but later he'll realize it was all for the better. Bella is more worthy to stand by his side." The lunatic continued talking to herself as she worked on the wards.
Finally she jumped up and down and clapped her hands with glee. "Nicely done Bella! You will always be the Dark Lord's favorite after today. He needs me to warm his bed again, like it was before that bitch returned."
Bellatrix raced into the room, hearing her in her cold, sickly-sweet voice proclaim, "All alone my dearie? What a shame. I came to keep you company while your lover is away."
As the door shut, Sirius realized who was in the room that Bellatrix was going to keep company. Fuck! Hermione was in there, and Bella was up to no good like she always was. Grabbing the doorknob he screamed as his hands burned, now bright red and peeling. Whatever wards Bella had put up were wicked, just like her. Sirius managed to get a hold of his wand, to cast a healing spell on his hands that tempered the burn.
He knew he needed to get in that room before Bella did something to Hermione. She could hold her own, but Bella, sicko that she was, knew more dark spells than most people in their world. He started working on the wards, once again begging any God out there to watch over Hermione until he could get in the room and take care of his cousin for the last time.
