Chapter 73
Welkin Storms the Gates of Hell - Part 2
Welkin used the largest hole of many in the roof of the dilapidated Shrieking Shack to gain entrance, gliding to the floor in her Raven form, then transforming to her human form next to Severus's abused and much too still body.
"Severus!" Welkin shouted. "Severus! I can't be too late!" She shook him until it was apparent that doing so would not rouse him from his stupor. She threw her body on top of his and spread her arms and legs to establish contact with as much of his body as possible. The healing touch had worked to draw Sully back to life. It would work with Severus. It had to!
She felt her body began to warm as she gathered the energy into a tight ball inside herself. When it went from warm to burning hot, she spread the fingers of each hand and pressed the healing energy all down into Severus's body, to burn away the poison in his system. She sent out her silver tendril to connect with his as a lifeline and draw him back to her.
"Come back to me, my only love," she pleaded. "You can't leave me alone. You promised me." She reached deeper and deeper, but there was no life force searching for hers. Nothing for her to latch onto.
As long minutes passed, she grew more frantic at the lack of connection. "Don't leave me, Severus! You CAN'T leave me!" she began to wail, writhing in inconsolable emotional agony on top of his still, cold body. "Nooo! NOOOO! You can't DIE! You CAN'T! Oh, GOD... Don't leave me! Take me with you! TAKE ME WITH YOU!" She collapsed in defeated sobs.
"Don't cry, Mama," a small voice inside her head spoke to her. "I'll help you get Daddy back."
"Sully?" Welkin whispered.
"No. My name is... Artemis. I'm here inside."
At last, Welkin understood. Arty Myst! She was pregnant! It was the baby who had pushed Voldemort away from her. Sully would be a great Wizard, of that she was sure, but this little one inside her already was an incredibly powerful Witch.
"We can bring Daddy back, Mama. Don't cry. I'll help you," Artemis calmed her and urged her to action.
Welkin did not hesitate. No matter how improbable, unlike her thoroughly Muggle upbringing, Welkin trusted completely in magick now. She did as her unborn daughter asked. She reached for her tiny, powerful life force and joined with it. Their entwined forces pushed down much deeper than before, searching for the tiniest sliver of Severus. They found it! A few more minutes and they would not have. He would have been gone from this life forever.
"Wake up!" they told Severus. "Join with us and come back." Severus gave one last burst of effort and latched on tightly to them, like a baby to the teat. They pulled him back to the living together.
Severus's body stirred beneath Welkin. This time they were tears of relief making trails through the dust and grit on her face. She rolled off him and helped him sit up, propping him against the wall.
"Wells, my love... your feet! They are covered in blood! What have they done to you?" Severus moaned weakly.
"Don't worry about it. It's not as bad as it looks," she replied. "Most of it isn't my blood. You should see the other guy," she joked.
"You came for me." He was looking at her now in wonder as he regained some strength.
"Of course I did. I'll always come for you, my only love," she said softly before she knelt beside him and kissed him.
"You saved my life." Severus still sounded amazed to be talking to her.
"With a little luck and lots of help," Welkin admitted. Should she tell him about the baby? Later, when they were well on their way to safety, she decided.
"I wish you could rest longer, but we have to go. We can't stay here in case Voldemort finds out I'm missing and comes back looking for me. He'd know this was the first place I'd come. I'll help you stand.
Welkin wrangled him to his feet and wrapped his arm around her shoulders to steady him. Surprisingly, after the savage attack he had gone through, he was still quite able to walk using her to lean on.
"We have to go back to Hogwarts to get my wand. There's no quick way to do that without straining you, unless..." It was a crazy thought, but her flight and the recovery of Severus gave her confidence again to voice it.
"Do you trust me to Apparate us both into The Room of Requirement?" Welkin asked.
"I do not think that has ever been attempted... but you are my prize pupil. I will trust you with my life. It has been yours to claim since the first moment we met," Snape said.
Welkin blushed, but a wave of pleasure swept over her at his words.
"Stop distracting me then, for now, sweetness," she told him. "If I don't concentrate, we'll end up in a stone wall somewhere."
Welkin thought hard about needing to retrieve her hidden wand and other articles from the room. She fixed it in her mind for a full minute before Disapparating the both of them. Seconds later, they Apparated back into existence inside the Room of Requirement, right next to the scorched ceramic jar where she had stashed her things.
"Bingo!" she shouted in triumph.
"What happened to this place?" Snape asked her as she retrieved everything and began to put her rings and other jewelry back on. "It looks as if there were a fire." He sniffed the air. "It smells like smoke."
"I don't know. It was like this when I came before. There must have been a hell of a fire to smell this bad. I was surprised the Room was still working," Welkin admitted.
"We need to get to the Boathouse and borrow a boat," Welkin said. "I'll peek out and see if the coast is clear."
"You sound as if you have a plan," Snape said.
"I do," Welkin confirmed. "Well, at least half a plan," she corrected. She cracked the door slightly and peeked out. "Oh my god, Severus! There are Weasleys everywhere! What are they doing here now? How are we going to sneak past them? We need a diversion."
"Who is closest to the door?" Snape asked.
Welkin peeked again. "I think it's Fred... or George. Wait... he still has both ears, so it must be Fred." She saw the look on Severus's face. "I'm not blaming you. That wasn't your fault! It's not like you were actually trying to hit him and blast his ear off."
"When no one else is looking at him, open the door and I will draw him inside. We will have to take him into our confidence. We have no choice. If anyone can create a diversion, it is Fred Weasley, " Snape conceded.
"He is a Master at it."
A prolonged conversation between Fred and his older brother, Percy, delayed Snape's plan, until at last, Percy and everyone else turned their attention away just long enough. Welkin flung open the door wide enough for Snape to cast a spell and drag the muffled Fred inside.
Unmuffled, Fred stared at Snape. "But, Harry said you were..."
"Dead?" Snape finished for him. "He was misinformed, obviously. He often is." Long habit made him add the snark to the comment.
"We need you to create a diversion," Welkin said, "So we can sneak down to the Boathouse. Why are there so many people in the hallways?"
"Don't you know? Hogwarts is under siege by Voldemort and his Death Eaters!"
"Hogwarts under siege?" Snape's face was a study in cold steel. He drew his wand. "I must..."
"No, Severus, please! You're still too weak! It's Harry's fight now! You've done all you can to help him. You've given most of your life to Hogwarts! Please! Let's just go now. I can't lose you! I just can't!" Welkin pleaded with him.
"The defense of Hogwarts is..." Snape continued.
"Is well in hand and is nowhere near as important to me as our life together!" Welkin interrupted. "Severus... I'm pregnant," she delivered the news bluntly. "So decide now where your duty lies."
"You are pregnant?" Snape stared at her.
"Very early, yes."
Snape put away his wand. "Create the diversion, Mr. Weasley," he said.
"Not trying to embarrass my elders, but, couldn't you just Apparate there directly? I'm assuming that's how you got here in the first place," Fred informed them. "Congratulations," he added cheerily to Welkin. “You look both glowing with vitality and like something the cat dragged in, with all that blood on you.”
"I'm a dunderhead!" Welkin shouted. "Of course, we can! You were never formally dismissed as Headmaster!" she told Snape. "Why didn't I think of that?" She turned to Fred. "Please don't tell anyone else that Severus is alive," she requested.
An extremely loud boom from outside distracted all of them before she got his answer.
"What the holy hell was THAT?" Welkin shouted. She ran back to the door and opened it cautiously. There was a large hole blown into the outer wall. Stones and other pieces of rubble were everywhere.
"Percy!" Fred shouted and ran outside to look for his brother. When he found him relatively uninjured, he was relieved. He also thought about the fact that, had he still been in the hallway instead of conversing with "dead" Snape and pregnant Welkin, he might have been killed by the blast himself. That would not do. What would George do without his smarter, more handsome brother?
Snape and Welkin Apparated into the Boathouse and he helped her into one of the small craft. He waved his wand to set the boat moving through the water across Black Lake. Physically and emotionally exhausted, Welkin sat down with her back against the back of the boat, and she motioned Snape to lie down with his head in her lap. They both stared into the thick Magical Mist that began forming across the lake.
A squawk high above them made Welkin look up, squinting against the light. Fawkes was circling, following them. A crimson emissary from Albus, Welkin thought. It was comforting. Like getting his blessing. She smiled and relaxed a little, despite the harsh battle sounds receding behind them.
Severus jerked and grabbed his left arm suddenly. The sound of joyful celebration erupted behind them. Welkin moved Snape's hand, and they both stared at his Dark Mark, faded to a pale tattoo of its former self.
"The arrogant little bastard did it!" Snape sounded surprised. "He actually killed him!"
"No matter how you say it, I know you're proud of him," Welkin chuckled.
"Is the baby a girl?" Severus changed the subject.
"Yes. She’s also very talented. She's already named herself. It turns out Arty Myst is actually Artemis," Welkin informed him. She's Artemis Morgana Snape."
"You promised that I could name her, Wells," Snape reminded her.
"That was before she named herself," Welkin said. "She helped save your life. The least she should get is the right to choose her own name. You can name the next one."
"The next one? There will be a next one?" he asked hopefully.
"Well, Hell's bells, why not?" Welkin sighed. "We definitely do make exceptional babies, and you need more than two to teach, after we get our own home. It would be a shame to waste your talents, as a genetically superior sperm donor and as a teacher."
"Our home will be high on a hill overlooking the sea, for you," Severus described.
"With a dungeon workshop, for you." Welkin completed the picture and grinned.
Their boat had almost reached the edge of the lake, where the Magic Mist began.
"Where are you taking me now, Wells?" Severus asked.
"Home, of course," she replied, patting him fondly on the cheek. "Home where I can heal you properly... Home to Avalon."
They disappeared into the Mist toward their bright new future together.

Author's Note: Obviously, Welkin insisted that Severus had to live, but I also indulged myself by saving another of my favorite characters who unfortunately died in canon, Fred Weasley. I couldn't stand the thought of the Twins being separated. There's only the Epilogue left for me to write. I'm hoping whoever finds this story has as much fun reading the epic of Severus and Welkin as I did writing it.
