CH 74
Once lunch was over, Lou automatically headed for her rooms and was about to enter, when she remembered Severus wanted to see her in his office.
‘Twit.’ She thought to herself, turning and heading back a ways to the potions office. Lou was about to knock when she heard voices from inside. The Headmasters voice she recognised instantly, and Severus’. The other voice though, it was vaguely familiar, but she couldn’t remember why. The hair on the back of her neck seemed to stand on end, something wasn’t right.
Lou took out her wand and cast a shield around herself, then amplified the voices from inside.
“Oh yes, we shall be travelling by portkey after lunch. Madam Snape will be settled into Karkias Academy by this evening. Is she very excited?”
“No Mr Ervast she is not, at this moment in time she does not know she is leaving Hogwarts. For reasons better known to the Headmaster and myself, it was considered better that she be told at the time of departure.”
“Oh dear, it is fortunate they have good security at Karkias, you did mention in your letter that her powers are very strong yes?”
“Indeed they are Mr Ervast, and her control of her shape shifting abilities are now at a premium. However it is necessary that she stay in Finland for the time being, her life is in danger here until the Ministry get off their backsides and retrieve the remaining Deatheaters. Perhaps the promise of a visit to her family home during the summer will help to appease her somewhat.”
Lou couldn’t believe what she was hearing. After all that happened, they were sending her away to Finland. Moreover, they didn’t even have the guts to tell her to her face unless she was drugged.
The three wizards all turned toward the door when Lou knocked.
“Enter.” Severus intoned.
Lou stepped inside, a surprised expression on her face.
“Headmaster. Mr Ervast, what are you doing here?”
“Mr Ervast is in the country on business and wished to reacquaint himself with you before he returns to Finland.” Severus told her, his own expression one of indifference.
“Hello Sir.” Lou greeted him earnestly. She knew he was uncomfortable about this, almost as much as she was. “I’m glad you came, it’s nice to see you again.”
“Likewise. You are Madam Snape now I understand, as well as joint defeater of Voldemort. Congratulations.”
They chatted a bit as Albus as Severus looked on, ordering fresh tea and placing a glass of pumpkin juice in front of Lou.
Lou said nothing as she picked up her glass, pretending not to notice three pairs of eyes watching as she drank. Severus too focused on seeing her drink the potion laced juice to listen to her thoughts.
‘Reddo.’ (I give back) She thought as she took a good swig from her glass. Lou allowed herself to relax into the chair. “So, how long are you here Mr Ervast?”
He cleared his throat, still uncomfortable with the situation. “I return today.” He said, his eyes shifting to the Headmaster.
“Mr Ervast has been learning our language Louhi, do you not think he speaks it well?”
“Yes I do.” She finished the last of her pumpkin juice. “So, what time are we expected to leave?” She asked, not looking at anyone in particular.
“I am sorry, I was led to understand that you knew nothing of your transfer to Karkias Academy?”
“Professor? Headmaster?” He asked, confused.
“How did you find out?” Severus demanded, looking slightly surprised over his teacup.
“I’m not telling.”
“I beg your pardon?” He spluttered. Unable to believe what she said.
“I said I’m not telling. You all seem to have your secrets. Well I’ve got mine.” Lou stood and faced Severus, anger flashing in her eyes.
Severus raised an eyebrow and shrugged his shoulders in a way that surprised Albus.
“Fair enough. Then I take it you are aware of why we are doing this.” It was not a question.
“”I know you’re sending me away and tried to give me a calming draught. I know you were being sneaky and planned all this behind my back. I would’ve thought you and the Headmaster had realised by now what happens when you go making decisions for me. Haven’t I already proven that I can look after myself now?” She asked them angrily.
“I’m sorry Mr Ervast, I know you were as surprised as me when you found out what they planned to do.”
“Headmaster, I thought you of all people would have given me the benefit of the doubt after what happened recently.”
“Louhi, this decision was not taken lightly.” He told her, wondering why Severus was not exploding at the moment. “You are still in a great deal of danger from the many Deatheaters still at large. Now it has been made public that you single handily defeated a large portion of their ranks, you will be their number one target. The fact you were taken from Hogwarts from under our very noses proves it is no longer safe here for you. Mr Ervast has secured a place for you at Karkias Academy where you will be safe. You will have the opportunity to learn things it would not be possible to learn at Hogwarts. You will be out of reach of the Deatheaters. During the holidays you will be able to visit your ancestral home, discover your families past and discover yourself at the same time.”
“Is that not so Severus?”
“If she wants to. It is not compulsory Headmaster.”
“I beg your pardon?” Albus asked him. He was stunned at the Potion Masters attitude.
“”Reddo Headmaster.” Lou said.
“What?”
“Reddo. That’s the spell I used before I drank my pumpkin juice. The calming draught was obviously a strong one.” She smirked wickedly as she spoke.
“Dear Gods, you mean I’ve drunk it? No wonder I … Look, are you willing to go Lou? I really would be happier knowing you are somewhere safe.” Severus told her. He did not feel like arguing, and could not summon up the energy to order her about. It just did not seem worth the effort.
“I don’t know. I need to think about this and I need more than a few minutes to do that. I understand why you’re all worried about me, yet what you did, or tried to do is mean, underhand. You want me to leave the only place I’ve thought of as home, leave my friends. Severus we’re married, even though you wont let me live with you as your wife we’re still married. We’ve gone through so much together in such a short space of time and you’re still trying to send me away. It hurts more than any curse, believe me.”
Lou turned and went to her rooms. When she found them bare of all her possessions she got a cold feeling inside of her. It was as though she’d been wiped out completely. Nothing of her remained in these rooms. Yes it was still decorated as she’d wanted, the kitchen was still there. But the life was gone from it, the joy and comfort she’d taken from these rooms was gone.
Lou turned and fled from the rooms, entering the Great Hall at a run and looking straight to Hermione.
“Lou, what’s wrong?“ Harry asked.
Several dozen faces turned in her direction from all tables. Her distress was evident and Lou had made many friends among the houses during her time at Hogwarts.
“I need to talk to Hermione, alone. Please Hermione.” She pleaded.
Hermione was up in an instant. She put her arm in Lou’s and steered her out of the doors, closing them so no one would follow.
“Your rooms?”
“Yes. No. Yours Hermione, for now.”
They headed up the main stairwell and into Griffindor tower. Hermione led her up a narrow staircase and after giving her password to a portrait of a large, angry looking griffon, it moved aside and they entered Hermiones rooms.
After they both plonked themselves on the bed the older girl took Lou’s hand and waited for her to speak.
“They want to send me away. Everything’s gone from my rooms, all my things. They said it’s not safe here for me anymore Hermione and they weren’t even gonna tell me. They put a potion in my drink to calm me but I spelled it to go in Severus’ cup instead. That’s the only reason he isn’t up here now dragging me downstairs. He drank it instead.”
Hermione stared at her. To say she was stunned would be an understatement. “They what? You what? Lou why now? I mean why the sudden decision to send you away, and where?”
“Karkias Academy in Finland. Severus and the Headmaster said all the Deatheaters will be looking for me now because of what I did at LeStrange Grange. I don’t want to go Hermione, but I don’t want to stay where I’m not wanted either. I know how easily I was taken from here Hermione, but I still got away didn’t I? I escaped and killed all them Deatheaters. Oh God I killed so many people. But they would have killed me, don’t you see? Hermione I don’t know what to do.”
“Wow! When did they decide this?”
“I don’t know exactly, but Mr Ervast is here ready to take me. I heard them talking before I went in the office. They were gonna give me the calming potion, then tell me I was going to this new school. Mr Ervast has a Portkey and everything. I don’t want to go, but if I refuse now they’ll just find another way to get me there once Severus’ potion wears off. It’s not fair Hermione. It’s not. Harry wasn’t sent away when Voldemort was after him so why should I be?”
“I don’t know Lou. It doesn’t seem fair. There again, Harry did not have the whole of Voldemort’s army after him all in one go. I don’t want you to go, but I don’t want anything to happen to you either. How long do you have to go for?”
“I don’t know, probably until my schoolings finished or all the Deatheaters are caught.”
Hermione hugged her friend close, both of them crying and neither knowing what to do for the best.
“I can’t make this decision for you Lou, especially if they’re going to find a way to send you anyway. Maybe …maybe if you go willingly, it will be better in the long run.”
Lou pulled back and looked at her horror struck.
“Lou, I said I don’t want you to go and I meant it. But you don’t want to wake up one morning and find yourself in a strange place with no forewarning. At least this way you will have chance to say goodbye to your friends before you leave. You can walk out of here with your head held high because it’s what you chose to do.”
Lou slumped. “How come you make so much sense? It’s not right.”
Hermione laughed cheerlessly. “Believe me, sometimes I wish I didn’t. Your mum was from Finland wasn’t she? You might be able to find out about your family. Finland has the most wonderful magical history you know, it’s magical lore goes back to the beginning of time. In fact I envy you, I would love the opportunity to go to Karkias Academy.”
“You would? But what about your family, your friends?”
“It wouldn’t be forever Lou. Besides, with Voldemort gone, Harry, Ron and I are not longer the targets we were and they would manage without me for a couple of years I’m sure. We’re not joined at the hip you know.”
Lou’s face suddenly brightened. “Hermione, will you come with me? We can both go to the academy and you can learn new things and we can search my family history together.”
“Lou I can’t, Karkias Academy is an exclusive academy for pureblood royals only. It’s also very expensive. My parents couldn’t possibly afford to send me there. I’m sorry.”
“I can afford it. Besides, I’m not royal and your blood is as pure as anyone’s. We’re all the same here Hermione, all witches and wizards. We’re all as pure as each other.”
“That’s a nice way of putting it Lou, but not everyone thinks that way. Besides, I couldn’t possibly accept your offer, it would cost a fortune.”
“I don’t care what anyone else thinks about blood. If you won’t go, neither will I. As for how much it costs, look at this.” Lou pulled a small piece of parchment from her pocket and wrote something down on it. “This is what I inherited from my mum and dad. It’s no good having all this money and nothing to spend it on. And that amount is only the Galleons. There’s ten times that in precious stones and houses and stuff.”
Hermione took the scrap of parchment from her and her eyes almost popped from her head when she read the amount. “Circe.” She breathed. “You got all this from Sirius?”
“No, only about fifteen million of it was my dads, the rest was from my mum’s side of the family. Please Hermione, come with me. I know you want to, you love learning more than anyone I know.”
Hermione passed her the piece of parchment back and stood pacing the room. “I don’t know Lou. It’s true I would love to go, but I wouldn’t feel right you paying for me. Yes I know you have all that money, but that doesn’t make me feel any better about taking it. People will say I’m taking you for a ride.”
“No they wouldn’t. Not if they don’t know. I’ll have some money transferred to your account and you can pay for yourself. Please Hermione, I’m not trying to buy your friendship because I know I already have that. And your not leeching off me because I’m asking you to do this. At least think about it. I’ll tell Severus and the Headmaster I want a bit of time to think about it, I’m sure they’ll let me do that now I’ve found out their plans. They’ll feel as guilty as hell about what they’ve done. This is a chance in a lifetime for you Hermione and I don’t know anyone else who would use this chance as well as you would. You’d be doing me an awful big favour if you said yes. Think about it and I’ll go see Severus and the Headmaster. Maybe Mr Ervast will stay for a bit longer and you can meet him. I’ll see you later, please consider it Hermione. Please.”
Lou left Hermione in a state of shock and headed back downstairs to face her husband.
Severus was about to head out and search for Lou after taking a dose of Pepper-up potion to counter the calming draught.
He was surprised to see Lou coming towards him down the dungeon corridor.
“So, you have decided to return.” He growled, closing the door and halting her in the corridor. “How dare you drug me.” He said. Grabbing her arm and pulling her into the empty potions classroom.
Lou pulled to try to get out of his grip. “Because you were gonna let me drink it and send me away, no explanations, nothing. You’ve emptied my rooms, it’s like I never existed. Well I do exist and I want to make my own decisions. If you don’t want me here Severus, then tell me. Tell me and I’ll go, but I want time. I need some time for me, for my friends. You might not want me any more but I still have needs. And feelings. You’ve hurt me again Severus. Why do you keep doing that?”
He relaxed his grip on her arm and she pulled away, unconsciously rubbing at the bruises that were most likely forming.
“I …It was not my intention to hurt you Lou. I just want you to be safe. You will always exist for me, no matter where you are. But when I think of what might have happened to you when you were taken from me it drives me insane. I would prefer you were away from me and safe, than with me and be at risk of being absconded again. Yes you escaped, and dealt with your abductors admirably. But it could have been so different Lou, don’t you see? It was only because Bellatrix wanted you awake when she tortured you that you were able to defeat her. Next time you are unlikely to have that luxury. Next time they will go straight for the kill. There will be no second chances. If that happens I could not live with the consequences. I would die if I lost you completely.” He pulled her to him once more, holding her close as though his life depended on it. “I love you too much to lose you now.” He said, his voice almost a whisper.
“I know.” She answered, holding him tight. “But I still need time Severus. I want to say goodbye to my friends, and I don’t know if I can do this on my own. I’ve asked someone to go with me as well. I also want to be with you properly before I do go. Like we were before we came back to Hogwarts. If I’m gonna be away from you Severus, I need something to take with me. Then I’ll go if that’s still what you want.”
“Lou we cannot …”
“Yes we can, you know we can. Please Severus, just a few days before I have to go. You and me, together as we should be.” Lou knew his resolve was wavering and she held herself closer, gripped tighter so he would feel her body moulding against his. “Please Severus, don’t you miss it, us?”
He groaned, closing his eyes against the images she brought forth of their week together and caved in. “Very well. I cannot refuse you any more. We shall have our time together, just you and I.” Then he stiffened. “Just who have you asked to go with you?”
Lou chuckled. “I wondered when you’d get round to that. Hermione. She’s taking a lot of persuading, but she’s agreed to think about it. Do you think Mr Ervast will wait around for a few days? It won’t be as bad if Hermione comes with me, and she’ll love learning all the different magic they have in Finland. She just got a thing about the money when I said I’d pay. Maybe you could persuade her. Think how much better it would be for me if I had a friend with me. Hermione would be a big help to me Severus, I wouldn‘t be so lonely if she was there with me.”
Severus looked at her appalled. “Dear Gods, it is no wonder the hat placed you in Slytherin. You are more Slytherinised than Salazar himself, I am convinced of it.”
She laughed. “You think so? Well I’ve had a good teacher.”
Severus frowned. “Off with you wife. I shall speak with the Headmaster and Mr Ervast, see if he will remain for a few more days, and if it is possible for Miss Granger to attend the academy with you.” A light slap on the bottom sent her happily off to find her Slytherin friends in the common room.
Rudolf Ervast was quite happy to spend a few days at Hogwarts and immediately sent off an owl to arrange for Miss Granger to attend the academy with Lou. Albus was keen to show off his school so was equally happy to have Mr Ervast stay. Severus, now he’d finally given in to Lou’s wishes was looking forward to taking her back to Prince Manor for the next few nights. Albus agreed to take over his classes for a few days until his return.
“Your what? But where are you going? When are you coming back?” Her friends wanted to know when Lou told them she was being transferred to another school.
“I can’t tell you where, I’m not allowed. Apparently I’m wanted by the Deatheaters and Se …Professor Snape and the Headmaster say I have to go somewhere safer. They grabbed me from here last time so it’s possible they might again. I wont even be allowed to go to Hogsmead any more if I stay. I’ll be like a prisoner if I stay here. I don’t like it but I don’t really have much choice. As for how long, until all the Deatheaters are caught or until I finish school I suppose. Will you write to me? You can give letters to Professor Snape and he’ll send them on. I’ll write back all the time.”
There were many tears and hugging amongst the girls and several of the boys gave Lou a hug and wished her well.
Hermione came to find her and they went to the potions classroom to speak in private. “Professor Snape has been to see me. He’s asked that I consider going with you to Karkias Academy and keep an eye on you. Lou did you tell him to do that?”
Come on Hermione. Does anybody tell Professor Snape what to do?”
“Yes, when they are married to him.” The older girl replied.
“Well I wish someone had told me that. If he’s asked you to go with me Hermione, it’s because he trusts you. So will you?”
“Hermione sighed and looked at her. “Yes.” She said, a big grin spreading across her face. “Providing the school will accept me that is.”
“Of course it will, I’m not going if they’re bigots. Oh it will be so much better with you there. It’ll be an adventure like you, Harry and Ron used to have. Oh Hermione, what about your friends? They’ll hate me for taking you away from them.”
“No they wont. They’ll understand.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I’ll make them. Don’t you worry about them. So, when do we leave?”
“I don’t know. A few days I think.”
“A few days. Oh my goodness. I have loads to do then. I need to pack, let my parents know. I’ll have to see about taking my NEWTS by post, I wonder if they’ll let me do that. I’ll see you later Lou.” Hermione almost ran from the classroom to make her preparations for the journey, leaving Lou grinning after her.
When she left the classroom she met Severus, who was again in the process of coming to find her.
“It is all arranged. You and I are leaving for Prince Manor this evening and will return here on Thursday morning. Then you and Miss Granger will make your way to Karkias Academy with Mr Ervast. I suggest you catch up with her and let her know what is happening and when, though only as regards travelling arrangements. Our personal business remains personal.”
Lou gave him a big hug and shot off to find Hermione before she reached Griffindor tower. Once she’d told her the arrangements, she then went to see the Headmaster and asked for funds to be transferred to Hermiones Gringotts account.
When she arrived back at the dungeons she didn’t want to go to her own rooms any more and knocked on Severus’ study door, entering when he answered her knock.
“Madam Malkin. What are you doing here?” Lou asked shocked at the sight of the dressmaker.
“Professor Snape flooed me and asked me if I would come and take your and Miss Grangers measurements and leave them with him. Though why I do not know. There is no better robe maker in all of wizarding England than myself. Even if I do say so.”
“My wife and Miss Granger are travelling for a while Madam Malkin. It may prove necessary for them to purchase robes while out of the country, we would prefer to have your expertise when it comes to the correct measurements rather than trust an unknown entity.” Severus told her smoothly.
“Ah. I see.” The woman said, appeased now. “Well that makes perfect sense. Where are you travelling to?”
“My wife and her companion are unaware as yet of their locations. It is a surprise for them both.” Severus put in before Lou could answer.
“Oh, how wonderful.” Madam Malkin chatted happily about her own travels as a young woman as she sent her tape flying and whizzing about, measuring Lou thoroughly and making notes as she went along. “There, all done. Now, where will I find Miss Granger?”
Severus used the floo and spoke to Hermione, discretely reminding her not to reveal where she would be going and sending the dressmaker to her rooms.
An hour later the woman left and Severus sent the measurements off to Mr Ervast so he could arrange for their new uniforms to be made, along with a winter wardrobe for each of them. Temperatures in Finland at that time were around 30 degrees below freezing.
“It is supper time. We shall be leaving an hour after we have eaten, so make sure to say all of your goodbyes before then.”
Lou nodded, unable to speak now as her emotions caught up with her.
Severus held out his arm, she took it and he led her to the Great Hall, ignoring the looks of amazement from the students making their way in the same direction.
