Epilogue
The couple walked hand-in-hand to the edge of the water and sat down together on the free-form bench made of apple tree roots. Behind them, up the hill, was the backdrop of massive columns and stone ruins of the ancient temple where they made their temporary home in the evenings.
"Aberforth should be here any time with the supply barge," Welkin said. "It'll be nice to have something to eat besides apples. I'm running out of recipe ideas. I know Avalon is the 'Isle of Apples' but I didn't think that was so literal."
Severus had been skeptical of Aberforth Dumbledore as their Secret Keeper at first, but the man had done an admirable job of it so far, he had to admit. He even thought to bring copies of The Daily Prophet and The Quibbler when he came, to keep them up on the Wizarding World news since the death of The Dark Lord.
Welkin's white nightgown was now clean, without bloodstains, and the tears in it were repaired. It would make a good maternity dress. Snape had dispensed with his dark jacket, rolled up his sleeves, actually unbuttoned the top buttons of his white shirt, and rolled up his trousers to stroll bare-footed with her.
There was a loud childish WHOOP as Persephone galloped out of the orchard with Sully laughing and clinging to her, riding bareback, his body crouched low like a jockey, and his arms tight around her neck.
"Severus, can't you do something about Sully pestering poor Persephone all the time. He won't listen to me at all," Welkin complained. "He's going to drive her and me crazy in less than a month, at this rate."
"Of course, my love," Severus said. "Sullivan..." He raised his voice to be heard over the boy's giggles. "Stop exacerbating that goat and come here."
"Look, Daddy! Look what I can do!" Sully sought his attention.
When they looked, Sully had his arms stretched toward the little black goat that was suspended a few feet off the ground, her little legs pedaling frantically in mid-air, but getting nowhere.
"Put Seffie down!" Welkin demanded. "You're wearing her out!"
"Seffie likes it, Mama," Sully insisted.
"Your mother said put that goat down, Sullivan. Right now, and come here to us," Severus repeated sternly.
Sully did as he was told. Persephone scampered off to hide from him, and Sully wandered over to them a little sullenly.
"That was quite impressive," Snape said, and Sully's face brightened at the praise. "We can practice levitation together later." Sully grinned broadly at his father.
"You have your mother's smile," Snape told him with approval.
"You can only practice with him for a half hour," Welkin ordered. "I won't have you undoing all my healing efforts by straining yourself."
Sully heard the Phoenix song and pointed at the bird soaring overhead. "FOX! Daddy... DumPa Abbus said FOX is for us!"
"Fawkes," Snape corrected.
Sully looked at his father, puzzled. "That's what I said, Daddy. FOX!"
Welkin made it worse by giggling.
"I hope Fawkes can hunt for herself for a while," Welkin mused. "I don't think Purina makes Phoenix Chow, and I'm not really sure what else they eat. I'll have to read up if we're going to take care of her."
"Guess what else, Daddy? Unka Ab is bringing Seffie a Boyfriend!" Sully blurted out. "Then, when Cousin Donnie visits us, I can ride Seffie, and he can ride Hay-Dees!"
"A male goat, Wells? Are we starting a farm?" Snape asked snidely.
"It's just a couple of goats and a Phoenix, Severus... and maybe a Flying Horse... if Hagrid gives us Black Pegasus," Welkin said casually. "When she's old enough, Arty and Sully both can ride Black Pegasus," she envisioned.
Sully patted Welkin's belly gently. "Hello, Sissy. I'm the big brother. I'll take care of you."
"That is another thing we must discuss, Wells," Snape told her. "How long will we remain here? Where will we go? What will we do to support ourselves now that I am no longer teaching? We must determine something well before you are due to give birth."
"There's plenty of time," Welkin replied. "I'm not even showing yet. We'll work it out. For one thing, we can market the VitaPresul tonic like we planned. As the pregnant widow of a hero of The Battle of Hogwarts, I can claim the government stipend for Artemis and the land grant too. I'll guilt them into giving us a really nice big one, since you gave your life for the cause. Our joint nest egg at Gingrotts is still fairly large, too."
"We can stay here at least until fall, so I can nurse you back to full health. It'll be fun! Like an extended vacation," Welkin said. "The baby won't come until January. I hope she's born on your birthday."
"Unka Ab is here!" Sully announced excitedly, and ran down to the edge of the water.
The supply barge approached, captained by Aberforth and laden with supplies, a randy looking evil-eyed black billy goat, and a plethora of Weasleys, with Fred at the forefront.
"Ahoy, Snapes!" he shouted comically. "Requesting permission to come ashore!"
"Excellent Secret Keeper you selected, Wells," Severus said a little sarcastically.
