76—Passaggio
“And all my instincts, they return. And the grand facade, so soon will burn. Without a noise, without my pride, I reach out from the inside. In your eyes—the light the heat. In your eyes I am complete. In your eyes I see the doorway to a thousand churches. In your eyes—the resolution of all the fruitless searches.”—Peter Gabriel
(Hermione)
A mad rollercoaster of twisty turns and rushing drops flashed around Hermione like an electrified exoskeleton.
This was most certainly not Snape’s mind. His mental laboratory had been disorienting and perplexing but at no point had she stumbled across anything unrecognizable.
But if she was no longer in Snape's mind, where was she? With no familiar landmarks, it was impossible to pinpoint location or direction. Or Quartet components. Had she wandered into Draco or Lucius? Was she somewhere in between?
The rainbow circuitry that breezed past lulled Hermione into a hypnotic languor, and her concern faded, her mind too mesmerized by the spectacle to string together anything more than a hazy notation. Beautiful. She just wished she could rest for a moment and take it all in.
As if granting her wish, her feet touched solid ground, which caused her to stumble forward in shock. She'd lost track of her body there for a few seconds, and its sudden solidity threw her off balance.
But it didn't throw her off as much as her new surroundings.
A forest of trees blotted out the sun, and their leafy canopy stretched over the dappled waters of an ancient cement pond. Lily pads and lotuses floated atop the still waters, and a tangle of lush vegetation framed the rectangular patch of grass that outlined the stone pool. Mystified, Hermione tiptoed to the edge for a better look. It seemed so . . . ordinary. After the otherworldly travel arrangements, she’d been expecting a destination far more alien and exotic. Watch a giant talking squid pop out of here and tell me the meaning of life of something.
Bits of broken concrete and a multitude of discolored cracks suggested either age or neglect had taken a serious toll, but the scrollwork and designs carved into the border made her think someone had built the pool as a labor of love. Had it once been used for bathing? Or had she merely landed in someone’s private garden? Dark and murky, the water proved too opaque to gauge its depth or purpose.
As she crouched to study the petals on the nearest lotus blossom, the water began to move, gathering and flowing as if a current whirled in its hidden depths. A liquid core coalesced and took form, like a jelly mould rising up out of the shadows, and as it neared, she realized it had taken the shape of a man—but not just any man.
“Draco!” she breathed.
Naked, and seemingly asleep, Draco floated upward through the water, yet when he broke the surface, he looked completely dry. And rather sweet. Without thinking, Hermione climbed into the pond to wake him.
The water wasn’t deep at all; it scarcely sloshed against the undersides of her breasts. Her filmy, white dress, however, didn't get the memo on benignity and attempted to drown her with what seemed like twenty times its weight in absorbed water.
Wait . . . where did I get this? Is it mine? She couldn't remember putting on the frock let alone where it had come from.
Absentmindedly peeling it off, she left the dress discarded in the water. It drifted away, and she crossed the remaining distance with relative ease, unencumbered by the trappings of civilized society.
Upon reaching Draco, she touched his arm, but he didn’t respond, so she bent down and kissed the peaked cupid’s bow of his pink upper lip. Hello, love.
Draco blinked open his eyes and smiled groggily when he recognized her. Smiling back, Hermione stroked his head. Wakey wakey.
Draco smoothly rolled over and stood, water sheeting off his body as if he’d been Impervious-ed. Leaning in, he slid one arm around her waist and dipped her slowly, like a time-lapsed tango.
Once he had her floating on her back, the trees above began to rustle, and a shower of leaves fell around them in a flurry of verdant confetti. The foliage swirled, inciting the lily pads and lotuses in their dervish, and the plants gathered and took shape just as the water had, coalescing to create a solid form. Flowers melted into blond hair, and greenery faded to ivory skin. Lucius appeared out of the botany, and Hermione couldn’t help staring as the last lotus morphed into his pretty prick.
Lucius always knew how to make a great entrance.
Just then, the wind rose to a dull roar, and the tree tops waved above her, bending to and fro. The leaves fell again, but this time a flock of blackbirds swooped into the maelstrom. Forming a circle of beating wings and sharp beaks, they flew in an ever-tightening ring until they were nothing more than a dense mass of feathers.
The feathers shifted and shaped, paling in the sunlight that sneaked through the branches, and Severus materialized from the blackness, his pallid features serene and relaxed.
Hermione reached for him, but he floated to the side and sank into the pond feet-first. Once settled, he waded through the water to stand at her head, while Lucius turned and started toward her feet. Draco stayed by her side.
Lucius, Draco, and Severus all lifted their right hands, and Hermione watched as, in perfect sync, they reached out and touched her body. Heat rolled through her, and the water caught fire. It spread in all directions, as if the pond were made of petrol, but none of them seemed to mind the flames. They didn't even flinch.
Lucius stepped forward, between her legs, and slid his hand up her thigh. The tickle of his touch on her labia felt like the brush of a frond, a whisper of awareness, yet Muffy saw fit to spring into action and set off ALL her arousal alarms.
Her body began to hum.
As one, the Slytherins bent to kiss her: Lucius meeting her mons, Draco finding her breast, and Severus bussing the crown of her head. As soon as their mouths made contact, she jolted. The fire that danced over the pond rushed inward and, with a thick whoosh, consumed her body.
But she didn’t burn.
Flames engulfed her from head to toe, a sight she knew should be frightening, but for some reason the flickering blaze inspired only fascination. As she stared, the conflagration separated and gathered, condensing into the three spots they had kissed. Her sex. Her heart. Her head. The fire tickled and tingled, as if the sun shone on just those three areas. Warm and alive.
Severus leaned in again, black hair falling around his face. Upside down, he tipped back her head and pressed his lips to the blank space between her eyebrows.
White heat ripped through her, and as soon as Severus pulled back, a bonfire burst from her brow. She shouted in ecstasy and bridged out of the water, a live wire of orgasmic power arcing through her body.
In that moment, she knew the answer. She knew everything. She knew too much.
Too overwhelmed to function, she closed her eyes and inhaled deeply to center herself. The smell of ozone assailed her sinuses, and the heat suffusing her skin dwindled to a cold sweat; she shivered in its clammy chill.
Opening her eyes, she found the world flipped upside down, Severus below her, the ground muddy beneath his wet head.
His hand rose to her face, and his expression took on the bewildered slack of stark amazement. He’d seen something in her eyes, something that left him stunned with wonder.
The magic had made itself known to him.
Pressed to her back, warm and firm, Lucius protected her from the storm, his lips steady and soft against the nape of her neck. Right beside her, Draco nuzzled her cheek and deposited several calming kisses along the curve of her jaw.
“You all right, love?” Draco whispered in her ear.
Hermione nodded, and then, with a weak sigh, flopped down against Snape’s shoulder, too tired to hold herself up a second longer.
“You know the answer now?” she panted into his neck.
Severus covered his eyes with one hand and bowed his head in a solitary nod. “I understand.”
Hermione hid her face in his shoulder to hide from the downpour. She just needed to rest a little. Then they could go see Harry and Ginny.
Lucius gently pulled out of her bum, and although she missed the way he filled her, she smiled when she felt his mouth sliding up her spine.
“We’d better get you inside,” he murmured. “Near the fire. How about you, Severus? Are you frozen to the bone yet?”
Hermione never heard his answer.
Fast asleep, she knew nothing except the narcotic power of Malfoy kisses and the lullaby of Snape’s embrace. Her dreams filled with warm bodies and soft murmurs, but no matter how they stroked and cajoled, she couldn't move or respond. Eventually, they granted her a reprieve and allowed her to rest.
And the dream faded to black.
Passaggio—the transition area between vocal registers (like between chest and head voice).
“In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel. Written by Peter Gabriel and released in 1986.
“The song was used twice in the 1989 US Cameron Crowe film Say Anything..., as well as in its trailer. An iconic scene from the film occurs when broken-hearted Lloyd Dobler serenades his ex-girlfriend, Diane Court, outside her bedroom window by holding a boombox up above his head and playing the song for her.“—Wikipedia
Ah! Such a great 80’s scene! Plus I love Peter Gabriel, so it gets bonus points from me :)
