Chapter 77: It's All an Illusion
Sirius could not believe that Hermione had slapped him, especially after he having just rescued her from the fighting taking place in the great room at Malfoy Manor. At the same time it was bloody funny! This woman did nothing but surprise him.
"How dare you yell at me and tell me what to do?" Hermione shouted at him. Her glare alone could have killed a man if "Death Stares" were truly deadly.
Oh, so that was it? She just didn't like being told what to do. Hermione was one of the most independent women he'd ever met. That was also one of the things that made her so attractive. He'd never really liked the simpering women who batted their eyelashes at him and acted all helpless. They became old very fast. They were no challenge for him. Now, a woman with fire running through her veins and was extremely feisty, that made him excited.
"Did you really need to slap me?" Sirius asked her.
"Well I know I'm not the first, nor will I be the last to slap Sirius Black's face." Hermione said with a twinkle in her eye.
"Yes, love, you'd be right. Nevertheless, answer me why you are still here. Let your dark lord and the crazy git Dumbledore fight it out. You are too important to Thomas, this baby and the future of our world." He reached out to hold her face still as he spoke. He hoped to finally get through to her.
"I just have a feeling that I need to do something. This point in time is where I need to be. Tom needs me." Hermione stood rubbing her hand where her Eternal Flame tattoo had been heating up the longer she stood talking to Sirius. The tattoo had been itching all day long.
"What's wrong with your hand?" Sirius asked.
"Remember I told you that this is the tattoo I was given that connects me and Tom. It usually flares when either he or I are in some kind of trouble."
Hermione looked down at the flames that seemed to be lighting up on her skin. "The interesting thing was, after I disappeared Tom said his Flame went totally black, so he thought that me and Thomas had died. He said he realized he knew I was back when he started to feel the pain in his tattoo when I was giving birth to Thomas."
"You never told me where you got the tattoo from." Sirius said pulling her towards the nearest room, shutting, and warding the door.
Hermione sighed, not wanting to tell the whole story about the Goddess Flamina and the prophecy. Even though Flamina had called herself a Goddess, Hermione had always seen her more as a demon. Flamina's mischief had enraged her many times when Tom had first summoned Flamina and Astralus the first time in order for him to increase his power even more. Hesitantly she went ahead to tell Sirius all she knew about Astralus, the God of the sky and clouds who rules over all things light. Then she told him about the flamboyant Flamina, the Goddess of Earth and Fire who rules over all things dark in the universe. When she was done with her story Sirius sat dumbfounded, staring at Hermione.
"This all really happened? You're just not telling stories to bide the time?"
"Why would I lie about something like this Sirius?" Hermione gave a nervous laugh. "I've met both of them and they are nothing to play around with. Except, you might have fun playing with Flamina, though I didn't."
Hermione gave a sudden gasp as she remembered back to the day when Flamina had spoken to her while in her coma. Her brazenness had fired something within Hermione to finally wake her from the dark place where she had been hiding. Then Tom had taken her down to the chamber where she was introduced to Flamina and Astralus. There, she had been gifted with some powers that she was explicitly told to only use for advancing Tom's work in gaining control of the wizarding world. She had powers she could use during a duel to create illusions of torture. This is how she could help Tom! She could control Dumbledore's brain, and let Tom physically torture and kill him. Maybe Flamina had foreseen this moment in time all of those years ago and gifted her with the powers that she'd need to help Tom take down the old wizard. Her excitement grew as she now had a plan where she wouldn't have to endanger this new baby and be out in the open battling Dumbledore. She could be hiding and still use her powers. This would be key to their victory today.
"Thank you Sirius." She reached up to hug her friend. "But I need to get back to the battle to help Tom."
"Let me at least cover you so you can get done what needs to be done." Sirius said.
"I will agree to that, but we can accomplish this by both taking cover somewhere and not be right out in the open. Agreed?" Hermione put her hand out in front of her.
"Yes, and I know the perfect spot." Sirius stepped back and held his hand out to Hermione. "Let's shake on it."
She grabbed his hand eagerly, and then felt her tattoo flare up, signaling that time was running out for Tom. Both of them ran out of the room and back to where the battle was still in full swing.

Lily Potter kept pacing up and down, back and forth, until she had walked every corner, side and step within her front room. Then she took the pacing to the kitchen, which then proceeded to her going upstairs then down, then up and then down. She felt like she was literally going crazy. Lily was trapped in her own home.
It had been several hours since she knew the battle at Malfoy Manor had started. There were so many people that she had to worry about, James, Sirius, Remus and of course Hermione and baby Thomas. She knew why she had been ordered by everyone to stay at her home and take care of Harry. She would rather be there fighting, but knew that taking care of Harry was most important. However, this didn't stop her from being extremely worried about who was winning and who might already be dead.
Hearing Harry cry, she ran back upstairs and lifted him into her arms. "It's OK baby. I understand. I want to be crying right now too. Your daddy isn't back yet, neither is your godfather or your other uncle."
Lily rocked Harry back and forth until she dropped into the rocking chair. Holding him close to her she sang quietly, trying not to think about the possibilities of what could have happened. She decided if she hadn't heard from anyone within the hour, she'd try to contact someone at Hogwarts, possibly Professor McGonagall.
Once the thought was in her mind, she couldn't let it go. Lily went back downstairs with Harry so she could floo call Minerva. It was hard to remember to call her by her first name now that she wasn't a student there. However, the older witch always chastised her if she forgot.
Spreading a blanket on the floor for Harry and giving him some toys to play with, she went to the fireplace.
"Hogwarts, Minerva McGonagall's room," she said as she threw the floo powder into the fireplace.
"Hello, Minerva, are you there? Hello?" Lily prayed that she was there. She had to talk to someone and express her concerns. She couldn't keep waiting a second longer.
"Lily? What's wrong? Is everything fine with you and Harry?" Minerva answered her finally.
"Yes, we are fine, I'm worried. I haven't heard anything from James, Sirius or Remus." Lily tried to not talk too fast, though her brain was working full speed with so many thoughts running around in her mind.
"I wish that I had something to tell you, but I've been quite worried about the members of The Order too. I would be there myself, but someone needed to stay here to run the school with Albus gone." Minerva looked just about as worried as Lily felt.
"I know James told me to stay here…" Lily said, but was quickly cut off from Minerva.
"Yes, young lady and that is where you will stay. You have that wee baby to take care of now. He needs his mum. Don't you dare leave the house." Minerva scolded her.
Once again, Lily felt like crying. Talking to Minerva had not made her feel better. "I won't, but isn't there any way that we can find how things are there? I'm going half crazy just waiting here all alone."
"Oh, my dear, I wish that there was, but anyone who could do this task is already there fighting. The best we could do is possibly send one of the Hogwarts house elves there."
"Truly? You would do that? I would appreciate it so much. Please." Lily tried not to sound like she was begging, but she knew that's what she was doing.
"As soon as I have word about…anything I will get back to you. I promise Lily. Now go read a book and take care of that precious son of yours." Minerva said in her bossy voice.
"I will, thank you again." Lily said.
Then she felt a calm come over her realizing that one way or another she'd have some news soon. She dropped down to sit next to Harry as he played with his toys. He looked up at his mum with a big smile, which in turn made her smile. He was worth every effort, every concern, and every hard fought battle, to keep him safe. If that meant not leaving the house, then she would stay put and wait, pray, and hope for the best.

Hermione and Sirius left the room to head back to where the action was taking place. With Sirius in the lead, Hermione kept an eye on anything behind them. There were too many people running through the manor, friend and foe. As they moved forward, she looked one more time behind them as she thought she had heard footsteps.
"Ahhh," Hermione heard Sirius cry out, and watched as he fell forward clutching his stomach. Dropping to the ground, Sirius's arms were wrapped around the middle as blood began to seep through his shirt.
"And where were you two sneaking off to may I ask?" Severus Snape stood in front of her, with Sirius curled up at their feet. His wand was out pointing at Hermione, as Sirius had dropped his wand as he fell to the floor and wasn't deemed a threat.
"What have you done to him Severus? He's helping me. Tell me what you did?" Hermione swatted the Death Eater's wand aside and dropped down next to Sirius.
"Why should I believe you Hermione? You did sleep with the enemy." Severus said with a drawl.
"I know that you and Sirius don't get along, but you need to help him." Hermione pleaded with the man.
"Don't get along? I hate the man and I don't care if he dies here at my feet." Severus spat out in his deep voice.
"I do care and you are going to help him now. Every second we stand here is one more second wasted when I could be helping The Dark Lord," Hermione reasoned with the man. "Are you going to be the reason he loses today because of your insane battle with Sirius Black?"
Her words stopped the man from responding as he thought on what she'd said. Hermione recognized the spell he'd used on Sirius as Sectumsempra, but didn't know the counter-spell to help Sirius. The man on the floor was losing too much blood.
"Sectumsempra, Severus; I know that was the spell you used. You will apply the counter curse…now!"
"How did you know that?" Severus asked in surprise.
"The counter-curse," her wand pointed at Severus and then her head nodded toward where Sirius lay.
With time running out Hermione was worried that Sirius was bleeding out. She closed her eyes and imagined casting the Cruciatus Curse on Severus. He fell to the floor as Hermione played the curse out in her mind. There was never a better time to practice her powers, and after all, helping Sirius would help Tom in the end.
She lifted the spell and Severus stopped shaking on the floor and glared up at Hermione. "Now Severus, use the counter curse and heal Sirius."
Lifting himself up, Severus kneeled next to his enemy and started singing the words that Harry had described for Hermione a very long time ago. The song-like incantation of Vulnera Sanentur slowed the flow of blood so Sirius would not bleed out. The song almost sounded like a lullaby she would sing to Thomas, with it's soft and gentle tone. He started the incantation a second time to clear the residue and start healing the wound. After the third repetition of Vulnera Sanentur the wound started fully knitting together.
"He will need to apply Dittany in order to prevent scarring." Severus said.
"Thank you Severus for saving him." Hermione's relief was evident in her words as she noticed the color coming back to Sirius's face.
"I did not do it for him Hermione, but as you said for the sake of our side winning." Severus stood up. "I can see now that you are a fitting mate for our master."
"Help me take him back into that bedroom," Hermione pointed to the room that she and Sirius had only left recently.
Severus lifted his wand, "Wingardium Leviosa," and Sirius lifted in the air as Hermione opened the door to the room. As soon as Sirius was deposited on the bed, Severus gave a curt nod to Hermione and stormed out of the room.
Sirius opened his eyes to look at Hermione while she tucked him into the bed making sure he would be comfortable. "You are going to stay in here to recover and I don't want to hear anything about it."
"But, you need my help," Sirius whispered.
"You aren't strong enough and you need rest to recover." Hermione said.
"What was that he used on me?" Sirius asked.
"A spell of his own making, Sectumsempra. It is deadly if the counter curse is not applied quickly. You were bleeding out." Hermione brushed the hair back from his eyes.
"How did you know about it?"
"Time travel, remember? Harry actually used it on someone at Hogwarts. He found the spell in a book that belonged to the Half-Blood Prince. Draco Malfoy almost died after Harry used the spell on him."
Hermione pushed Sirius back down after he tried to get up again. "I take it Snivellus is the Half-Blood Prince?" he asked derisively.
"Yes, and Snivellus is the one that just saved your life." Hermione said ,while thinking after he cast the spell that almost took your life. Everything she'd heard about the Marauders constant fighting with Severus had been true. She was grateful that she had been here when the two men had met, if not, Sirius would be dead now.
"Now be a good boy and keep your arse in this bed. I'll come back later to let you out." Hermione said while standing up and heading to the door. "Don't even try to leave this room or I'll Crucio your arse back to bed the second I see you."
She conjured him a glass of water and called for a house elf. "He is not to leave this room until I return." She handed the elf his wand. "Keep this away from him too, but let no harm come to him."
Sirius grinned up at her, "You still love me."
She bent down and kissed his forehead, "Maybe so, but just not in the way you want me to. Now sleep it off."
She locked and warded the bedroom with powerful wards like those she had used when she, Harry, and Ron were on the run. Making sure to put up a disillusionment charm on herself, she headed back to the battle hoping that Tom was still alive to help.

"Lily, Lily?" Minerva called.
Lily came running from upstairs." Yes, I'm here. I just put Harry back down for a nap. He's teething and has been so grumpy. What did you find out?" Lily asked with much trepidation.
"The battle is still going on. Neither side has won. The elf did mention that he saw Professor Dumbledore dueling with Voldemort. The poor little creature could not tell who was winning it looked so evenly matched."
"Thank you. I guess it's better to know that…well, that there is a reason I haven't heard from James or the others." Lily kneeled down at the fireplace, her hands clasped tightly together.
"I need to be off my dear, there are students in need of discipline after some horse play in the Great Hall. Your husband and his friends left quite the legacy that many students feel the need to live up to." Minerva said in her strict voice, but with a touch of humor.
"Take care Minerva and thank you again." Lily said quietly as the Deputy Headmistress left. At least she hadn't heard that any of them were dead. Lily stood up and headed to the kitchen to bake. At least she would have some food to give the men when, not if, but when they returned. She started to hum a tune as she pulled the supplies out of the pantry, glad that she had contacted Minerva after all.

Hermione made her way to the alcove in the West corner that Sirius had been telling her about where he had been hiding before. It truly did give her a clear view of Tom and Dumbledore's fight. Both men looked like they were going to drop, neither one of them yet having taken the upper hand since she'd left the room. Her worry increased when she took a good look at Tom. She knew this man well, and with him being older now, she wasn't sure about how much longer he'd last against Dumbledore. Hermione knew that the only wizard The Dark Lord ever truly feared was Albus Dumbledore.
With Hermione reading so much about wizarding history, especially the first Wizarding War, she was almost certain that this battle had never taken place before she had time traveled. Things had changed because of her being in this time period.
The smell of blood and sweat in the room was nauseating to Hermione. All of this fighting, and so much death, was almost more than she could take. She'd already been through one war in her life, to only find herself at the start of the first war. She thought she had known what she was getting into when she had decided to steal the time turner and head back to the 1940's. Everything that had happened had not only been surprising, but much had been because of her choices. Things though were not always what they seemed. As a teen growing up with Harry and Ron she never could have imagined what kind of man Albus Dumbledore truly was. He was manipulative, deceitful, and purely evil at times. When he tried to kill a pregnant woman and an innocent child, her belief of any goodness in the man had disappeared.
Oh yes, then there was the thing about falling in love with one of the supposedly darkest wizards of all times. The Tom that she loved was not the Voldemort from the time she had come from. Had she changed him? Had time changed the man from who he could have been to who he was now? Time travel definitely ripped the time continuum apart. Everything she had ever read about traveling through time appeared to be true. When you meddled with time, one person could seriously change the outcomes of many people's lives. The question she asked herself now was, were the changes for good or for evil? What happened today might bring some answers to these questions.
She tried to calm her soul by closing her eyes and slowing down her breathing. Her full measure of focus zoomed in on one, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. What pain could she inflict that would topple him and allow Tom the advantage?
The wand poking into her neck tore her from her concentration. Looking to her side stood Lucius Malfoy with his usual sneer on his face. He must have been born that way because it always seemed to be there.
"Oh Gods! Not you too." Hermione exclaimed at seeing who was bothering her now. "What do you want? In addition, would you mind lowering your wand? If the Dark Lord saw what you were doing to his mate and his unborn child you'd be dead right now."
Lucius's eyebrows rose up high at her words, his face in complete shock. "Another child so soon?" His words only seemed to anger Hermione more.
"Now answer my question, what do you need from me?" Hermione was tired, hungry and had to go to the loo. She was not in the mood to be taunted by the likes of Lucius.
"I ran into Severus and…" Hermione cut him off before he had a chance to go on.
"So you wanted to see if I could really do what he claimed. Shame on you for not believing your friend." Hermione closed her eyes and thought of a spell. Lucius started whimpering and patting at his skin and clothes.
"What are you doing? Are you crazy? Put out the fire now." Lucius kept hitting at his clothes and face as if he was on fire.
Hermione stopped the spell and grinned at Lucius. "I'm not crazy and you were never on fire. I only made you believe that you were."
"But it felt like my skin was burning. It really was quite painful." Lucius complained as he kept turning his hands front to back to check for burn marks.
"It was all an illusion. Now, either stay and watch me help The Dark Lord or go and find someone else to bother." Hermione said.
"You seem to be in a snit," Lucius said.
"I wish to be left alone so I can help Tom. Then we can go get Thomas and go on holiday with each other." Hermione kept watching the duel wondering why couldn't this just end finally.
The two wizards were toying with each other, and appeared to be showing off how many different spells they each knew. This pissing match was pointless and nothing more than a way to boost their own egos. They were wasting their energy and magic. At this rate nothing was ever going to be resolved.
Closing her eyes she focused once again on Dumbledore. She put forth all of her hatred towards the man who had tried to kill her son. She noticed the minute the spell hit the old man. Dumbledore shrieked out in pain and fell to the floor, dropping his protective shields. His screams magnified as his body felt wave after wave of the imagined Cruciatus Curse. Hermione left the safety of the alcove and walked out to where Tom was standing watching Dumbledore roll about on the floor.
"Finish him off my Lord. It's time to end this. My energy is draining and I can only hold this spell for awhile." Hermione said.
Tom looked surprised as he spotted Hermione walking towards him and then at hearing her words. "You are doing this?"
Hermione only needed to whisper one word, "Flamina," and Tom smiled.
"How does it feel old man?" Hermione leaned over Dumbledore as she spoke to him. "I'm doing this to you without using the unforgivable curse." She could see the look of surprise in the wizard's eyes. All noise around them seemed to disappear.
"You were never meant to win this Dumbledore. Once the people realize who you really were they will follow me." Tom said.
"Like…sheep…to slaughter," Dumbledore wheezed out.
Hermione bent even closer to Dumbledore as she continued to torture him. Whispering to him she said, "Even in my timeline you died during my sixth year by the hands of Severus Snape. You left a mess in The Order and the rest of our world. You expected a seventeen year old wizard to battle Voldemort."
Dumbledore's fatigued eyes looked up at her, "It worked though didn't it?"
"At what cost old man? So many people were lost, including your savior, Harry Potter. Your death today will result in many lives saved."
Dumbledore's face showed the amount of pain he was feeling. It brought a smile to Hermione's face that she was doing this to him.
"Finish him Tom! End this now!" Hermione shrieked at The Dark Lord. Her body started trembling from holding the spell so long on Dumbledore. Her head was spinning and she felt faint. She could feel her spell weakening as her mind began to lose focus.
The Dark Lord dropped to the ground at seeing Hermione suffer. Pointing his wand at Dumbledore he started to say the words that would end the wizard's life. "Avada…"
Dumbledore's hand shot up, with his wand pointed at Tom's head. The word "Obliviate" came out at the same time Tom said, "…Kadavra." Dumbledore's hand fell, his wand rolling along the floor.
Hermione stared in horror at what had just happened. Tom lay next to Dumbledore looking as if he were also dead. Had she truly heard correctly what spell Dumbledore had used right before he died? No, no, no!
Hermione crawled over to Tom and put her hands on his face. "Tom wake up. Please wake up!"
Other Death Eaters started gathering around Hermione and the two great wizards, now lying motionless on the floor. The Death Eaters had gotten the upper hand, especially after the side of light had seen their leader fall. They were now being gathered together, and magically chained in a circle. The fighting was done.
"What happened Hermione?" Lucius asked bending down next to her. "Is he dead?"
Hermione couldn't speak as she thought of the repercussions if Dumbledore's spell had truly done what she thought she'd heard. Leaning down to his ear she began to whisper to Tom.
"Tom, please wake up. You won Tom. Dumbledore is dead." She shook his arm as she spoke to her mate. His eyes finally opened as he looked up at her as if in a daze.
"What happened?" Tom tried to sit up. Hermione held him down afraid of what he would say next.
He looked at Hermione and smiled, "You are very beautiful. Who are you?"
Lucius looked at Hermione, "Did he hit his head?"
"Yes, that's what happened. We need to get him back to our bedroom." Hermione stood up desperately trying to think of her next move. No one could know what happened. She had to do something to try and reverse what Dumbledore did. The bastard had gotten the last laugh didn't he? What was she going to do?
Once in the bedroom she tried to calm down a confused Dark Lord, who wasn't taking kindly to being dragged somewhere he wasn't familiar with and with people he didn't know.
"Lucius, tell no one what has happened. I'll call for a healer to look at him. In the mean time, take the prisoners to the dungeons. We will discuss terms with the other side about their release. For now they get blankets, warm soup and water." Hermione rattled everything off quickly trying to get the man to leave.
"Report back to me once all The Order members have been taken care of downstairs."
A puzzled Lucius looked at her then nodded, "Yes, my lady. Then we need to talk about what happened." He turned and left the room closing the door behind him.
Taking a deep breath she let it out slowly before turning back to Tom.
"Are you going to tell me who the bloody hell you are and where I'm at?" Tom asked her with a gruff voice.
"Merlin give me strength," she whispered to herself. Now was the time that could possibly change the direction of all of their lives. She sat down next to him and tried not to give in to the urge to take his hand in hers. "I have a story to tell you."

Don't be too angry with me ending it here. There will be an epilogue to follow. This chapter needed to end with it being almost 5000 words, which is 21 pages. If you are wondering, I have known the ending to this story for a long time. I had been planning on the Obliviate, but wasn't sure who would do it. What will happen next? You will have to wait to find out. I will try hard to work on the epilogue and get it up ASAP. Then this story will be truly over. Thanks so much for all of the support you've given me writing this huge story.
