Chapter Eight: A Little Light Reading Will Cure a Hangover
August 24th,
It’s been over a year now since Hades has practically taken over my lab, and although there hasn’t been much change to it physically, there’s still a definite change. If I said I wasn’t sure what brought this about, I would be lying. When I descend the stone steps down to our private lab, it’s not longer quite the dreary trek it used to be years ago when I first took up residence here.
Severus flipped through a few more pages after skimming over most of the entries, but he did stop when he saw mention of Miss Granger, who he noticed was becoming more frequent in his writings as the entries went on.
October 9th,
That wretched, infernal girl is testing my patience once again. The fact that she remembered my birthday was enough to make me want to have her drawn and quartered, but her idea of a birthday present is sorely lacking, to say the least. It is with great irony that ‘said’ birthday present has now made itself home on my lap and is contentedly purring itself into an oblivion and has no clue whatsoever the danger she is in being in such close proximity to me.
Whatever made her buy me a blasted cat of all things is beyond me, and the fact that she even bothered to get me anything at all, let alone an odd, black kitten, is intriguing. With this in mind I shall name the offensive creature ‘Intrigue.’ I hope Granger doesn’t get too attached to her little offering because it will most definitely be used in a lecture on animal dissections on Monday.
October 10th,
My overly enthusiastic apprentice seemed pleased when I grudgingly thanked her for the present which had clawed it’s way up my leg in class this morning. How in the nine hells it got inside the classroom today was beyond me. I’m still hearing the students snicker about it and the next one that does so will get a cat hurled at them at the speed of a snitch.
What’s worse, is that the damn thing wouldn’t leave no matter how many times I tossed it out the door and slammed it shut. After the twenty-third time of getting pitched out on its hide, one would think that it would learn its lesson. However, the little bastard is proving to be as stubborn and persistent as my apprentice is, and thus spent the remainder of my class sitting on my desk. I really can’t wait until Granger’s birthday so I can find something equally and truly horrible to get her. Maybe Trelawney’s entire published work nicely leather-bound will suffice.
November 12th,
I know it’s not quite that time yet, but I’m seriously thinking about inviting Hades to have Christmas dinner with me at my house up in northern Scotland. I don’t know why, really, since we have a fairly decent dinner here around the holidays, but it was just a thought.
Her little present to me in October isn’t so little anymore and surprisingly, it has learned to fetch, much like a dog would. It’s the damnedest thing I ever saw. It has also proved to be a good watcher in the classroom for those who try to cheat. The little furball is going to be Mrs. Norris’ rival in the ‘fear’ department before long.
December 27th,
I didn’t get around to asking Miss Granger for the Christmas holidays but perhaps I will do so next year. Dinner here was nice, nonetheless. I was surprised that she chose to remain here instead of spending it with her friends. She seemed a bit on the down side earlier this week, but that’s to be expected as she used to spend most of her holidays with her parents.
Potter and Weasley did arrive for lunch the day after, however, and I had to listen to the three of them engage in one stupid conversation after another. Hades is a thousand times more intelligent than either one of those dunderheads, and how she goes from the brilliant woman I know in the lab to the giggling, silly thing I saw earlier, I will never understand. She seemed to be having a good time, though, a far cry from her quiet state a few days ago.
Potter is still quite the little shit that I remember him to be, and the fact he is a spitting image of James now makes me want to retch. Weasley, on the other hand, has tamed down a good bit. One can only beg the higher powers that he doesn’t have the talent for procreating like Arthur and Molly did. SEVEN children…dear God…
I noticed halfway during our meal that Hades was wearing the pendant I gave her. She was quite radiant, even when she was acting rather idiotic with her two former partners in crime. It’s not something I say often, even here in print, but she is one of the loveliest women I have ever seen . I wore the cufflinks she gave me today, as well. They are without a doubt the nicest present I have ever received .
Severus closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Never in his life had he spoke of anyone in those terms, not even his mother. His eyes quickly scanned down to his hands and took in the shiny, metallic cuffs adorning the cuffs of his best jacket. He hadn’t paid them much attention the past few weeks, and now they stood out like a sore thumb.
He held his wrist up close and watched the light glint off of the square, exquisite silver. The intricate patterns etched into the design told him these weren’t cheap by any means. He noticed the symbol of the ankh woven into the design and the small, black onyx squares in each corner. They were beautiful. And she had given these to him.
He was nervously shaking, flipping ahead to further entries before stopping on the last. He took another long breath, and lowered his eyes to the words.
August 23rd,
Things are getting rather tense with the situation lately. With Lucius dead, one would think it would have weakened the Dark Lord’s resolve considerably. However, he is quick to make use of the remaining members he does have and they are well-trained, I hear, though that is to be expected. Even with all the tension, things have been oddly quiet on that end lately. This bothers me greatly because whether he remembers or not, I used to be right up there with the worst of them, even if my tasks were nowhere near as brutal or gruesome. And I still remember all of his little secrets and how he plans things. Something is going to happen and soon…I can feel it.
I need to talk with Hades. She has practically been a saint lately and has been very patient with me. I can’t even remember the last time we ever argued. But I have to tell her how I feel, whether she feels the same way or not. If something were to happen…
He closed the journal. He couldn’t go on. He knew what he was about to read, and he needed to think for a moment. There was no doubt of the feelings she brought out in him, even now in his current state, but nothing compared with the man he was just a few short months before, when she was apparently the one thing he couldn’t stop talking about on quill and parchment. He could easily put two and two together, and it wasn’t that he was afraid of falling in love, but he wasn’t quite sure of what it was he was afraid of. Perhaps it was that this girl was still very much a stranger to him, and it took a long time for anyone to gain his trust. Especially someone who was supposedly a former student.
He apparently learned to trust this girl, and she trusted him in return. He praised this girl and she did everything she could to help him. She knew of his past and stood by him no matter what, and from what he read, she was also there with him when he once again entered the textbooks with another breakthrough.
And she’s gone. I hurt this girl, this stranger to me now, but someone I once confided in. I wasn’t under a potion or a spell, but I trusted her with what I believed to be my standards of worth, and believe me, I set them pretty damn high.
I can loathe myself for my past all I want to for the rest of my life, he sighed as he sat silently with book in hand, but I’ll be damned if I add her into my long list of foolish mistakes.
He set the book down without reading another page. He didn’t need to peruse through any more entries to figure out what would have came next. He was still very much an outsider right now, but he knew that outsiders were the first to know when two people fall in love even before they do sometimes.
He would be damned if he let the hero and heroine in this tale die without a happy ending for once in his life. With a determined mindset, before he gave himself the chance to change it completely, he walked over to his desk and withdrew the vial that Miss Granger had so enthusiastically handed him the day before. With a long glance at the object in his hand, he stood there in nervous tension before downing the entire contents in once gulp. His memory had yet to improve any, but he did know that it was time to go and get his apprentice back.
