Time to plan
The next week passed quickly, and to Thea's great relief, nothing much occurred. Although Snape, true to his word, did teach her some interesting spells, curses and potions which could be used in moments of need. He seemed to trust that Thea would not abuse her power, and indeed she would not.
If was a few weeks before the Christmas holidays when Malfoy approached her again. She was sitting in her room carefully going over some incantations when her previously locked door flew open silently.
'Malfoy.' She said without the merest hint of emotion. 'You could have knocked.'
Draco merely chuckled low in the back of his throat.
'I have been asked to initiate you into the Death Eaters. You have been assigned a mission.'
Thea kept her face impassive though inside she was churning with emotions.
'We know that you have private lessons with Snape where you test potions for the Ministry of Magic. We want you to ensure that a copy of the finished product is handed to me. I in turn will pass it to the Inner Circle.'
Thea nodded. 'Of course. I will work out a plan of action straight away.'
Inside Thea was confused. Didn't Snape work for the Death Eaters? Or maybe not. Maybe that merely was a rumour with no truth whatsoever. It seemed likely now that he was not. Unless something far more complicated was being planned and she was simply a pawn in a much larger game.
She stood. 'Thank you for delivering the message, Draco.'
He smiled slowly, his face creasing with satisfaction. His long blonde hair was pulled back into a pony tale, and Thea recognised how handsome he was, though she failed to be moved by it.
Malfoy walked towards her slowly.
'I was hoping maybe you had considered my offer.'
His hands closed around her upper arms and he moved his face in close.
'Draco, I don't want to complicate matters by becoming involved with someone. Anyone.' She was trying to avoid the drama of their last scene.
'Very well. But still,' His voice was so soft now, oozing through her head.
'Maybe you could be a little friendlier with me.' His lips moved against hers as he spoke, and he only had to move his torso fractionally as he began to kiss her.
Thea fought back the urge to bite his spiteful tongue, instead she turned her face away and he laughed softly against her cheek.
'Such a tease.' He sighed. For a moment he wrapped his arms around her pinning her arms to her side. He flexed his arms, squeezing her against him, and she felt the power there. She was one of the youngest in the year at 17, Malfoy was 18, almost 19, and his lean body was surprisingly strong.
Thea swallowed, and with effort remained silent. Finally he released her.
'You have until the end of term.' He said as he stepped away from her and headed for the door.
'Oh, and Thea?' he stopped at the door, turning towards her his face gravely serious, his eyes flashing dangerously.
'I will have you. Be it soon or later. But one day you will be mine.'
And then he left. Thea didn't know whether to be furious or terrified. Because in that moment, staring into Malfoy's dangerous and arrogant eyes, Thea had believed him.
Snape kept glancing at Thea as they worked. Her hair was pulled back almost savagely from her face, her eyes had a hollow bruised look to them, and as usual she wore no makeup. She looked surprisingly young and different than normal. He realised that it was the soft look of her mouth that made her look so childlike today, and the slightly haunted look to her eyes.
He knew about her assignment of course. But he didn't think that was what was bothering her. She didn't appear nervous or scared, only slightly nervous and resigned. Watching the way she was careful never to draw too close to his scrutiny, Snape wondered if Malfoy had attacked her again.
As she reached forward to drop the newest ingredient into their latest mixture, Snape glanced at her wrists, but he saw no further signs of abuse.
'I think it is ready now, don't you Miss.Carter?'
Thea jerked her head up as if she had been unaware of his presence and his voice had shocked her.
'Yes, professor. Shall I test it?'
Snape nodded, perching on his desk with his notes and a pen in his hands.
'Take only 3 drops.' He instructed, and Thea obeyed. This latest potion had some very powerful ingredients in it, and Snape wanted to be sure that the dosage was not too high.
'What is your name?' He started in the usual way, noting the blank look in her eyes and on her face as she answered,
'Thea Melissa Carter.'
'What school do you attend?' Snape's voice was bored.
'Hogwarts.' He noted that this time Thea did not elaborate on the questions. Interesting. The added MilkThistle had negated the benefits of SinderDown.
'How long have you attended said school?'
'Seven years.' Still Thea's voice was neutral, her eyes staring blankly ahead of her.
'How are you feeling today?' Snape enquired his eyes on his notes. His head shot up however when he heard the feeling with which Thea replied.
'Awful. I can barely remember a time I've felt worse.' Her voice was saturated with emotion. So different was it from her usual neutral tone that it was as if another young woman was speaking to him, one who wore her heart on her sleeve.
'What is causing your distress?' Snape watched fascinated as Thea's whole face changed. It appeared to just crumple. Her lips trembled, her eyes closed briefly and a few tears slid down her face.
'My fate is being decided for me. I'm going to be made to do things which I don't want to do, and I fear that once I start I might never be able to stop.'
Snape knew exactly what she was referring to.
'Is there anything else?'
'Yes.' Was her brief reply.
'And what is that?' Snape stared at her intently.
'I'm being threatened; physically. I can't think of any safe way to prevent myself from being taken, and part of me is saying that it will happen regardless of what I do. I'm only left with one choice; to fight and hurt myself more, or give in and save myself some of the pain.'
Tears were now streaming down her face which had gone a deathly pale apart from a bright red flush across her cheeks as if she was overheating. Snape thought he knew exactly what she meant by the word 'taken' and a muscle in his jaw tensed.
He had one last question. 'Why don't you ask someone for help?'
'I don't know who to trust.' Came her clear answer.
Snape watched for a while as the tears continued to stream silently down her face, and as her chest heaved slightly with each breath. Finally he stood and handed her the antidote which he then told her to drink down. She did.
It took quite a few seconds until her eyes began to clear and she looked groggily around her. A hand flew up to feel the wetness on her cheeks, and she briefly looked horrified, before a blank and guarded expression was drawn across her face.
'What happened?' She asked in a purposefully calm voice.
'Can you remember the questioning?' Snape's voice was just as neutral.
'No.'
'Interesting.' Snape replied, beginning to pack away his supplies. Finally he turned to look at her, taking in the look of barely concealed anger that was flashing in her dark eyes.
'It appears the potion not only made you forget you were being questioned, but also invoked strong emotional responses to the subject matter.'
Thea noticeably paled. She flexed her hands to stop them from shaking.
'Do not be concerned,' Snape spoke airily, 'you did not embarrass yourself, Miss.Carter. You are here to be an assistant to me, not a stage show.'
Part of Thea felt relieved, but another part felt panicked, knowing that there were only two things right now which were the cause of her distress.
She stared hard at Snape's back as he fastidiously wiped down their working surface. Was he lying? Thea had no way of knowing. She hoped that whatever he had heard from her would not one day be used against her.
Thea hurriedly packed up some of the supplies. She wouldn't admit it to him, but she was still feeling very emotional and very exposed. The sooner she got away from him, the better.
'Professor Snape?' She enquired politely. 'Is my assistance no longer needed? May I be excused?'
Without turning round he said, 'Of course. You may go.'
Thea grabbed her book bag quickly and hurried out of the room. Snape turned and watched her go, a thoughtful look in black eyes.
The following week Thea watched Snape carefully. Although concerned that by testing the potion on her, Snape might be able to learn from her private information, Thea had no other choice. Snape would never allow the Veritaserum to be tested on himself, and she needed to watch him so she could figure out where he kept his notes.
Others might assume that Snape would keep them in his private study or rooms, but being the obvious choice Thea disregarded it as an option. If she were going to hide important documents in regards to potions she would keep them in the most glaringly obvious, and therefore un-thought of, place imaginable; the potions room itself.
She already knew that it would be kept in magically hidden compartment, either very high up on the wall, or very low down; Snape was too clever to put it at eye level where someone might accidently find it with their wand. Thea knew that the spell to uncover the apartment would be basic, but Snape would most definitely put up wards to tell him who had attempted to open the space, and most likely some powerful deterrents.
Having something to focus herself on, Thea became grimly determined. She settled down in classes and the faculty seemed pleased that whatever had been wrong with her was obviously over, as her grades continued to soar. In every spare minute out of class Thea was tucked away in a locked room meticulously scanning through advanced books on Arithmancy, wards and 'personalised' spells. She even sent a note to her father via the family mail owl, to ask for books from their Dark Arts section at home. Mr.Carter was so pleased with her sudden interest and dedication that he sent her note saying how 'pleased he was that she had finally pledged allegiance to The Cause.' Thea would have laughed at his presumption and arrogance, but recently she just hadn't felt like laughing.
Finally just as the end of term was approaching, Thea felt she had worked the wards Snape would be using. It had been a hard task, and Thea had had to watch Snape very closely and refer to her previous knowledge of him to work out how he might think. Logic was his god, and Thea had had to really stretch herself in order to come anywhere close to his mindset. She hoped more than anything that she had been successful, because tomorrow she was putting her plan into action.
