Chapter Eight: Changing Places

The next morning while Professor Snape was teaching and Hermione was in advance Transfiguration the house elves moved their things to even larger quarters. It was up in one of the unused towers. Bright sunlight poured in which was perfect for a little baby.

“ I’m not sure that Severus will like it,” commented Dumbledore.

“ Oh he’ll like it,” said McGonagall. “ A baby doesn’t need darkness, it needs sunlight. And sunlight is what baby is going to get.” She had joined them after her lesson was over, giving the rest of them over to Alister, who was excellent replacement, at least for today.

“ Boy your overly protective of her baby and it hasn’t been born yet,” snickered Remus. “ Is this a make-up for Harry?”

“ Don’t even bring up that,” hissed McGonagall. “ Dumbledore left that sweet little baby with animals and not with me.”

“ It’s a make-up for Harry,” concluded Remus. Dumbledore chuckled and McGonagall glared.

When Hermione and Severus saw the new quarters Hermione beamed and Severus glared. Hermione knew that he hated sunlight, but Hermione thought that they were perfect.

“ I hope I don’t see Gryffindor tower from here,” hissed Snape.

“ Now come on we wouldn’t do that to you,” joked Remus. Severus glared at him, but said nothing.

“ You know something I think it’s great that Severus is finally settling down and starting a family, even if it’s with the one person that you never thought,” said Dumbledore. “ It will be good to see your child here in eleven years.”

“ If it’s magical,” Severus pointed out. Hermione looked at him.

“ What do you mean by that?” She asked, interested and scared at the same time.

“ When a child reaches three months the medi-witch or wizard can tell if the child will be born with magic. There some kind of test, I over heard Lily talking about it with Sirius and James when they thought I wasn’t listening.” Hermione suddenly was scared, what would happen if her child was born without magic, would her husband love the child, or would he leave them both. Dumbledore got a sense of what she was thinking because he added.

“ I’m sure Hermione that your child will have powers, I mean after all both of you have powers and talent. I think it’s safe to say that it will be quiet the talented one, might even come to Hogwarts early.”

“ I hope so,” Hermione muttered. “ Oh by the way who lived her before?”

“ Oh these were Godric findfindors quarters,” Dumbledore explained. “ Of course he wasn’t high into house colors. Thought they belonged in Gryffindor tower and not his private quarters. Rumor has it that he brought Rowena in here from time to time.”

“ Oh great we get Gryffindors love nest,” hissed Snape. “ This is really peachy.” Hermione smiled at him.

“ Don’t worry that was a long time ago.”

“ Not long enough for me,” replied Snape. “ So what else have you inflicted on me, other then sunlight?”

They showed them the room that would be the babies. It was all done in blue that McGonagall explained could be changed if it was the wrong gender.

“ Just wave your wand if it’s a girl and the color changes to pink.”

“ Will it be all pink?” Hermione asked.

“ Sure.”

“ That’s wonderful, we move from Ravenclaw colors, to Ravenclaw colors.”

“ Severus can’t you at least go with the norm?” Asked Remus. “ Blue has been used for centuries for boys and pink for girls. It’s how the world works.”

“ I had black.”

“ No wonder your in love with that color, you know something me and the rest of the staff must go shopping in Hogsmead this weekend. You guys are more then welcome to come,” said McGonagall.

“ I would love that, would you?” Asked Hermione, biting her.

“ Very well, as long as I’m not being summoned.”

“ Great this Saturday it is.” And the Professors left. When the door closed he turned to his wife.

“ I’m so glad that’s over with,” he told her. “ Now to be alone.” She giggled as the door to their quarters was closed.

The rest of the week passed quickly and soon Saturday was upon them. Both Hermione and Severus went with Professors McGonagall, Sprout, and Sinistra to Hogsmead. Harry and Ron went with them for moral support. The first shop that they went to dealt with broomsticks and they got them a bluebottle broomstick.

“ The perfect family broom,” Sprout said, reading from a small card that was over them. “ I’ll get one.”

“ You know that means that I’m going to have to learn how to fly,” muttered Hermione. “ I didn’t do so well in the subject.”

“ Ya and I still have nightmares about that,” piped up Ron. Hermione glared at him. The next shop was so baby cheerful that it almost made Severus run back to the castle. When they entered soft music was flowing and at once Hermione got the sense that it was the largest shop in Hogsmead. There were two sections, one for babies and one for children up to the age of five. Professor Sprout picked out a crib that played music to put a child to sleep; there were blankets that self warmed.

“ For those cold nights,” she read as she picked out several.

Baby clothes that like the room changed colors to suit the gender of the child. Rattles that roared made sounds like a phoenix. There were jars of baby food; milk for those mothers that couldn’t produce it. Harry saw a baby dragon and when he touched it, it spit out fire, which almost made him go through the ceiling. There were things that covered the head and feet. Outfits that made the women giggle and of course Halloween costumes. All the outfits had a seven-year preserving charm, which meant as Professor McGonagall put it, the outfits wouldn’t fade or wear out.

Hermione ended up getting a little of each and by the time they were finished they had more bags in their hands then Hermione had when she had taken all those classes. The next day Severus was summoned by Lord Voldemort and this left Hermione alone to get things set up. She hoped that he was all right and that he would return safely. However Lord Voldemort seemed to have a view on the unborn child, one that made Severus even more upset. It seemed that everyone had a comment for him.

“ You must feed it and take care of it,” Lord Voldemort commented.

“ So you just summoned me to give me advice,” said Severus.

“ Well someone must. This child even though I don’t approve of half-bloods will be very powerful, we must make sure that it is strong in both mind and body.”

“ Is that all?” Severus asked.

“ Actually no.” He went over and handed him a box. Severus didn’t like the idea of Voldemort giving him anything, but he accepted it and disappeared.

The box was checked, rechecked, and Severus was told that once it had passed then it would be put into the babies’ room. Severus thanked Dumbledore and returned to his quarters. However when he arrived he saw a pair of uniform shoes under the crib that was being constructed.

“ Is that you Professor,” came the voice of Harry.

“ Yes it is Potter.”

“ Good hand me that screwdriver.” Severus picked it up and handed it to him. “ Thanks.” He sat down and watched Harry at work thinking that this must have been his wife’s idea.

“ So what are you doing here?” He asked.

“ Well Hermione can’t put this thing together so she asked me, personally I like the idea that I’m helping out in my own way. So how did the whole thing with Voldemort go?”

“ The dark lord was giving me advice,” he confessed. “ I hate advice.”

“ Then were all in trouble,” Harry answered as he pulled himself from under. He grabbed the other end and soon was working there as well.

“ I agree Potter, I agree.”
