Harry watched as Snape disappeared into the bathroom, finding it slightly odd that Malfoy and Snape would share it, but at the same time not really thinking much of it. Sharing bathrooms was a common thing in Hogwarts after all; it wasn't as though he hadn't done it himself for seven years, and Snape and Malfoy were close.
He nodded at Lupin as he slowly got to his feet. "Yeah, I want to get this over with, although I don't know what he can have to talk to me about that he didn't already say yesterday. Has he found something out?"
"I believe he just had a request for you," Remus replied with a smile. "Then if you wish, we can join the rest of staff in eating in the Hall?" He shot a last look at the bathroom door, a small smile playing on his lips as he too rose to his feet.
Noticing Lupin's glance, Harry wondered at it, shooting one of his own towards the door and wondering if perhaps there was something he wasn't getting. Still, he shrugged and nodded.
"Yeah, that sounds good. Haven't had anything to eat today yet. Malfoy's a terrible host."
"Oh? You know, I do believe you need to tell me that story Harry. I’m most interested," Remus said with a teasing grin. "As in, how did you two not kill each other and more than that, go to kissing in the snow?"
He dropped the wards and motioned Harry out, waiting for a reply and laughing to himself at the faint blush that his words caused on Harry’s skin.
Harry quickly made his way through the door, frowning at the heat he felt rise in his cheeks, and squirming slightly at the question.
"He got me drunk," he replied eventually, as though that would explain everything adequately. "With your whisky."
"I see," Remus nodded. "It is rather robust. Not strong enough I thought it was last until morning though," he added thoughtfully.
Walking a few steps down the corridor, Harry turned eventually, stopping to look at Lupin as his eyes narrowed in thought. "He's not quite who I thought he was," he replied quietly, feeling fairly certain that Lupin knew of Malfoy’s wife and child but not feeling it right to mention it.
"I am glad to hear that Harry," Remus replied. If he was curious or surprised at all, it did not show on his face, nor in his voice. "I am a meddlesome old git, I know. But I really do want you to be happy, Harry, as tired as I know you must be of hearing that."
"I hardly call asking a question being meddlesome," Harry replied, smiling as he began walking towards Dumbledore's office once again; feet mindlessly carrying him on a path they knew so well he didn't even need to think to direct them.
"But thank you. For everything."
"Well I do have more questions if you prefer," Remus chuckled. "But you’re more than welcome Harry."
"Such as?" Harry flashed a grin up at his former Professor: the man who was more like family to him now than anyone else. He knew opening himself up like that could put him in an embarrassing situation, but Lupin had always been so kind and patient with him, and above all else Harry trusted him.
"You can ask, I just can't promise to know the answers though."
"Oh, well it is nothing I haven’t already asked, but you’re being less than satisfactory in your answers," Remus replied, wagging a finger in mock consternation toward Harry. "I am certain you understand my interest."
"I can't answer what I don't know, Sir." Harry replied frowning as he chewed slightly on his bottom lip. "He talked to me, told me things; confirmed in some ways what I'd thought for a while but…"
He trailed off, trying to explain what it was that had happened between them but being unable to. Thoughts and feelings far too jumbled to be able to make any sense of them.
"Not to be rude, and I don't mind talking to you about it but, I'm not sure I do understand your interest."
Remus gave the other man a speculative look. He had mentioned Draco telling him some things, but Remus himself was uncertain as to Draco’s motivations and inner workings. More than that, it was not his place. "You mean other than the fact I am in love with his Godfather and more than that, I care for Draco?"
"Well, when you put it like that I suppose it does make a lot of sense," Harry shrugged. "But really, if it is answers you are looking for you would be better off asking Malfoy. Good luck though, doesn't like answering questions much, that one."
Remus nodded in understanding. "I don’t pretend to much understand him, I doubt I could. I just…" he shrugged in uncertainty. "You seem unhappy."
"Yeah, finding out someone else is trying to kill you, just when you thought things might start to get back to normal, and then also being told that someone close to you is helping them, will do that to you," Harry replied, unable to keep the note of bitterness from his voice.
"It has nothing to do with Malfoy though, even though the fact that he came to me about it at all is a little odd."
"Harry." Remus stopped walking, and turned to face the other man, waiting until the other man followed suit before continuing. "You do not deserve what you are having to face again. You did not deserve it in the first place and you have no idea how I wish I could change things for you. And it infuriates me that I do not even have the words that will make you feel better, let along change anything."
Remus’ hands clinched into fists as though to prove his point about his uncharacteristic flash of temper, before he took a deep breath and reigned in it. "Harry, I know what a low blow it is to have a friend betray you and to such a point. Believe me, I do – there’s little that compares to the pain and the wondering why. But you won’t be going through it alone, please remember that."
He stood and straightened his shirt, giving Harry a small, tight smile. "As for why Draco decided to say something to you… well, you said yourself he’s not what you thought."
Harry smiled, gently placing a hand on Lupin's arm and squeezing slightly as he nodded. "I know you do. If anyone understands what it is like then it is you. And you've done so much to help me already, just giving me someone to talk to about it helps - a lot."
Withdrawing his hand, they began walking once more, enjoying a few minutes of companionable silence before Harry spoke again.
"He makes me laugh," he said softly, thrusting his hands deep into his pockets as he had a tendency to do when nervous or contemplative. "I mean, really laugh like I haven't done in ages. Even without the help of tickling charms," he added with an impish grin up at Lupin. "I never thought Malfoy could do that."
"Tickling charm?" Remus asked in surprise. "He really did hex you last night? With Rictusempra?"
"What? You thought he was kidding?" Harry laughed; eyes wide and incredulous that Lupin hadn't taken their comments earlier seriously. "Oh yeah, he hexed me all right. Had me rolling around on the floor for ages and just laughed at me, the prat. He's not above taking advantage of the drunk and disorderly you know."
Remus shook his head and laughed, speaking the password for Dumbledore’s office before raising a brow and ushering Harry in. "I shall remember that."
Harry grinned and shook his head, as he entered the headmaster's office, smiling warmly at the elderly wizard as he watched him get to his feet.
"Harry, thank you for coming. Please, take a seat." He motioned to a vacant chair opposite his desk, and casting a final glance towards Lupin, Harry walked towards it and sat still feeling rather perturbed as to why he was here.
Dumbledore noticed the look, and smiled at it. "Don't worry Harry, there is nothing to be concerned about, I just wish to ask you a couple of questions, that is all."
Waving his wand, he summoned a tea tray, laying it down on his desk, and with another flick, watched with the eyes of an amused child as the tea pot poured three cups, dropping sugar into two, milk into all three and a drop of honey into one, and floated them to their respective owners.
"Now that everyone has refreshments, let us get down to business." Taking a sip of tea, Dumbledore carefully placed his cup back down on the saucer with a faint clink of china against china, chuckling slightly at the sound.
"Harry, as I am sure you have already been informed, I would very much like it if you would remain at Hogwarts over the holidays. I know you had plans to spend it at the Weasley's, however under the present circumstances I think it would be more wise for you to remain here."
Harry nodded. The prospect of spending Christmas at Hogwarts wasn't the most appealing thought, and he had been rather looking forward to seeing the Weasley's again, having not seen any but Ron and Ginny for quite some time. Ginny, it seemed, still had quite the crush on him and Harry didn't have the heart to tell her he wasn't interested, preferring to pretend that she didn't and hope that it went away of its own accord instead.
"Yeah, that would probably be best," he agreed taking a sip from his own cup and hissing slightly as he burnt his tongue. "Thank you."
"Excellent! Excellent!" Clapping his hands enthusiastically, Dumbledore rose to his feet, walked to the other side of the desk, and stood opposite Harry.
"Because there is one other thing I would like to ask you as well. Of course, it will require you having to spend a great deal more time here than you currently are."
"Oh?" Harry was intrigued, but also a little apprehensive. He knew he didn't have much reason to be, Dumbledore had always acted in Harry's best interests, doing what he could to help him, but after what Malfoy had told him…
"Indeed. It seems that Madam Hooch would like to retire, and so we shall sorely be needing a new Flying instructor, and of course Quidditch Referee. Would you be interested in stepping into the breach at all?"
Harry's mouth dropped open, in what he was sure was a completely ridiculous expression, but frankly, he couldn't bring himself to care. Dumbledore was offering him a job? And flying and playing Quidditch at that; two of the things in the wizarding world that he loved almost above everything else.
"I…I don't know what to say." he gasped eventually.
Dumbledore chuckled as he placed his hands on the boy's shoulders and looked fondly into his eyes. "Say 'yes' Harry, just say yes."
"Then…yes," Harry gulped, turning to glance at Lupin, astonishment and excitement etched over his features. "Thank you, Sir."
"Good. Excellent. Now, if I am not mistaken, I do believe it is approaching Lunchtime. Remus? Perhaps you would like to take Harry to the Great Hall and help him get acquainted with the new seating arrangements."
Remus nodded his consent, unable to keep the smile off his face. He was pleased that Harry would be here, where Remus knew he would be safe, and that he would be here. He stood, bowing as he said goodbye to the Headmaster before escorting Harry out of the room and down the stairwell.
"Congratulations Harry," he grinned, once they were back in the hallway.
"You knew about this, didn't you?" Harry beamed, green eyes wide and sparkling, overcome by elation and excitement enough to momentarily push all other thoughts of the dangers ahead of him to the back of his mind.
Part of him still couldn't believe it. While at Hogwarts he had thought that perhaps he would like to be an Auror, but the reality of war and left him craving a quiet and peaceful life away from the violence and the tragedy. As much as he wanted the wizarding world safe, he knew that he could no longer be the one to do it.
Although the school remained home to some troubling memories for Harry, memories of battle and loss, of rivalry and anger, it was mostly home to fond ones. Memories of soaring high over the castle grounds during Quidditch Practice, or hurtling to the ground at break-neck speed chasing a shining, golden ball. Memories of evenings curled up by the fire with Ron and Hermione in the Common Room, even of Neville and his continual losing of the Common Room password, often being found slumped dejected against the wall hours after being refused entrance and only able to enter when a fellow House mate arrived or left. Memories of a home he had almost forgotten he had.
"I didn’t!" Remus grinned, laughing when Harry shot him a look full of disbelief. "All right, I did have an idea about it, but I didn’t know, no," he relented. "I am thrilled for you, though."
"Thanks," Harry replied, feet thoughtlessly walking a path to the Great Hall. "Feels a little weird though. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, because I'm not; I just can't help wondering if there is more to it than he said."
Remus’ forehead furrowed in thought. "Such as?"
"Dunno," Harry shrugged, not entirely certain himself what he meant. "Just a feeling, I guess. Seems a little out of the blue, and I can't help but wonder if perhaps he's just trying to keep me here and out of trouble."
"See," Remus replied pensively. "Well Harry, I can tell you that Hooch’s leaving, although sudden, was not unexpected. She would no doubt wish to announce for herself, but you know as well as I that she wouldn’t want you feeling badly. She’s pregnant, Harry."
Harry was very grateful that he hadn't been eating or drinking anything at that moment, because if he had been he felt sure he would have choked on it.
"Pregnant? But…how? I mean, I know how, but…pregnant? Wow…" For some reason Madam Hooch had never struck Harry as the getting pregnant type, in fact for most of his school years he was convinced that there was some sort of unrequited lust, or love, or something on her part for Professor McGonagall.
"Well, that explains a lot I guess…" Harry replied, still feeling more than a little dazed. Today seemed to be following yesterday as being full of surprises it seemed.
"Indeed," Remus agreed, leading Harry into the Great Hall. "And you must admit, there was no better person that we could think of to replace her than you." He reached the Staff Table, and motioned to the chair to his immediate left.
"Thanks," Harry replied, lowering himself down into the chair and surveying the room in front of him. It looked…odd. Most of his seven years at Hogwarts had been spent glaring over towards the Slytherin table, and Malfoy. To see it lain out before him from this angle was slightly disorientating, and daunting.
Detecting movement out of the corner of his eye, Harry noticed Snape enter the Hall alone, gliding gracefully towards the table, sneer ever in place and seemingly oblivious to Harry's presence. Inclining his head in the Professor’s direction, he whispered to Lupin. "Does he know?" Simultaneously wondering where Malfoy was.
Remus was thrown by Harry’s question briefly before a grin tugged at his lips as comprehension dawned. "He did," came the reply as Remus gave Harry a comforting pat on the arm.
"Oh," was all that Harry seemed to conjure by way of a reply, although technically speaking it sounded more like a groan. Every job had its high points, and its pitfalls. Having to see Severus Snape every day, much like he had in school was definitely a pitfall in Harry's opinion but one that he owed Dumbledore, and Lupin, to tolerate as best he could.
Upon reaching the table, Snape allowed himself a barely audible derisive snort at seeing Potter sitting on the other side of Lupin.
"I suppose congratulations are in order, Potter," he sneered as he took his seat at Lupin's other side. "I wonder how much trouble you can get yourself in with such a simple role. I dare say you will try your best, however."
"Thank you, Snape," Harry replied, smiling as politely as he could to the other man. "I would imagine so long as no one flies too near the Whomping Willow everything should go fine." Or unless there was another student like Neville in his first class, in which case things could go very, very wrong. But he wasn't going to think about that.
"And here I thought you would be near cheerful for lunch," Remus interrupted as he placed a hand on Severus’ thigh.
Covering Lupin's hand with his own and squeezing slightly, Snape merely shrugged in indifference.
"I congratulated the boy, Remus. I think that speaks for itself, don't you agree."
"And quite," Remus agreed cheerfully, the teasing in his eyes not apparently in his tone.
Harry watched the exchange with a quiet curiosity as he helped himself to a slice of steak and kidney pie, washing each mouthful down with a sip of pumpkin juice and almost groaning at the simple pleasure of a good home cooked meal. He hadn't had food like this since he had graduated, being fairly disastrous in the kitchen himself, and it had always been one of the things he had missed about the school.
He found himself wanted to ask where Malfoy was, but not wanting to engage in any further conversation with Snape, or even appear to care, as no doubt Snape would take great pleasure in ridiculing and tormenting him over that, even with Lupin present. So instead, he continued to eat his lunch in silence, feeling the gap fill and the growling cease as he laid down his fork every last morsel devoured.
"I should probably go and collect some things from home," he said to Lupin once he let out a sated sigh. "If I'm going to be here over Christmas, I'm going to need more than what I came in and what I'm wearing. Besides, Hermione's probably worried sick. I sort of abandoned her last night to meet Malfoy and haven't seen her since. She's going to kill me as it is for making her wait to so long." He winced slightly at that thought. Hermione angry was not a pretty sight. Scary yes, but not pretty.
"Very well," Remus nodded. "I will come with you." He dropped his napkin next to his plate and smiled at Severus. "I won’t be long, once we find Hermione I’ll leave them be. Did Draco happen to mention if he would be back today or not?"
Snape nodded, glaring at Potter and obviously annoyed that he was the cause of Remus leaving. "Yes. He has some business to attend to but plans to return later once it is complete." His brow furrowed slightly, the frown on his face barely discernible as he too laid his napkin down and stood with Remus.
"Then I shall see you when you return." Offering a faint smile to Remus, and a curt nod to Potter, Snape turned, and left the table, gliding down the hall in the same ominous manner in which he arrived.
Once he had disappeared through the hall's doors, Harry turned to Lupin, as he too rose to his feet.
"It's okay, you don't have to come with me. I'll be fine on my own, really."
"I would feel better about going with you," Remus replied as he dropped his voice. "I understand if you do not trust me Harry, and if you wish I will stay here."
"Oh! It's not that," Harry replied shaking his head furiously and pushing down the stab of guilt that he felt in making Lupin think such a thing.
"I'm just…it's just…" He sighed, running a hand down his face as he did so. "I've put everyone to enough trouble as it is, without causing more. I'm sure you have other things to do and I really will be fine." He smiled warmly at the other man, lowering his voice slightly, tone becoming almost mournful.
"Of all the people I know, you are the last person I'd suspect. Like you said, you understand. You've been there. And even if you did hate me that much, which I don't think you do, you cared about my parents. You wouldn't make their sacrifice for nothing by hurting me. It might sound arrogant, and I don't mean it too it just that…well…I do trust you."
"You haven’t put anyone in any trouble Harry. Whoever is doing this to you, yes. However, it is not your fault and I will not have you thinking it is."
Harry nodded, letting out a deep breath as he took a step away from the table. "Well, if we are going we better go now. Snape looked like he was reading to use me as a guinea pig for experimental potions for taking you away."
"He usually looks like that," Remus said with a chuckle. "Lead the way, Harry."
So he did. Feet carrying him swiftly through the Great Hall, and out through the main doors to the castle, before finally down through the grounds until they were safely able to Apparate back to number 12 Grimmauld Place.
