Chapter 7 - There are times when you think your life can't get any worse. Then it does.
The next day Harry went to see Severus, a little angry that the man had kept this from him, but looking and hoping for some answers. When he arrived at the man's office, the door was slightly ajar and Severus was sitting at his desk grading dimwitted students' papers. Harry knocked softly.
"Enter," Snape said in a sneering manner, figuring it was some dunderhead.
Harry entered the office with a look of pain on his face and the slur Severus had ready died on his lips with one look at the younger man, "Merlin's balls, Harry, what's wrong?"
The ex-Gryffindor, now Slytherin, took a seat in front of the desk and waved his wand, closing, locking and sound proofing the door, "I want to know why you didn't tell me about Draco sooner."
The Potions Master just sat there and stared at Harry for a few minutes before answering, "I had no idea Lucius pulled him out of Hogwarts. He didn't contact me to tell me, and usually when a Slytherin is pulled, which is rare, I'm notified as their Head of House. I must say it's a bit suspicious…"
Harry tilted his head to the side and studied his professor turned friend, "You had no idea?"
Severus shook his head, "None whatsoever. And it's very unlike Lucius to tell me how Draco is doing over the summer, as well. I generally get a few letters each month on his progress of things he's learning while at home."
The younger man just nodded, sitting in silence until he was ready to move on to his next point of attack.
"So, you had no idea that Draco was dead?" He said softly, so softly that Severus almost didn't hear him.
Snape blinked slowly then took in everything about Harry's appearance. There was no way the boy was lying and he had no idea why Albus would lie about Draco's whereabouts. Unless he was doing it to prevent Harry from finding out the truth and doing something drastic like trying to get revenge.
"Draco's dead?" He said in a horrorstruck voice, "Dear, sweet, Hecate. Lucius finally went over the edge…"
Harry just snorted, "You think?"
Severus sighed and shook his head; he was going to have a very long talk with one Albus Dumbledore before this day was through.
"Harry, I assure you I had no idea about this. And I promise I will do everything in my power to help."
"Funny, that's what all of Slytherin said," Harry said in a bitter voice.
"Oh?" He questioned, "Who was all involved in this oath of revenge?"
Rolling his eyes, he told his professor about the previous night, "Crabbe and Goyle told me if anyone messed with me, they'd have words with them. Pansy and Millicent told me they would try and find out as much information as they possibly could about what happened. Blaise is all about being there for me and Nott is supporting anything I decide."
Snape nodded and folded his hands on top of his desk, "That sounds like my little snakes. Are you going to take their help?"
The raven haired young man nodded, "I have no choice. All I know is Voldemort is going to fucking pay for giving Lucius the orders to take Draco from me."
The Potions Master knew Voldemort had nothing to do with this latest development, but he feared Harry wouldn't believe him were he to tell him so he just continued to let him think what he wanted. The next time Severus was called to his Master, he would make sure to bring this up with him and see what he had to say about it. Perhaps the Dark Lord wouldn't be happy with his right hand man and would punish him accordingly.
They talked for a little longer until it was time for them to both go to their next class and Harry promised to come by either later that night or the next day to speak to him. Severus was happy with anything he could get from Harry and he wasn't about to turn him away no matter what. He may want more than friendship from the younger man but now definitely wasn't the best time to go after that. He was mourning over his lost lover.
That evening after dinner Severus went to the Headmaster's office to confront him about the false news he had given at the Welcoming Feast.
"Albus, where is Draco Malfoy?" Severus said in a very angry voice.
Dumbledore knew Severus had found out the true reason why the blonde wasn't at the school and couldn't hold back the information any longer, "Severus, Draco is dead. His father killed him, though we're not entirely sure why. His body was discovered at the gates of the school a few days after Harry's birthday with a note saying Harry was the cause of his death. I don't know how much of that I believe but on his birthday I received a letter from Draco himself stating that he wanted me to deliver a letter to Harry after he was found dead. He seemed to know his end was near."
The Headmaster's voice was filled with sorrow as he described what little he knew then handed the letter, opened and read, to Severus. The other man was upset at first that Albus had read the letter meant for Harry's eyes only but after reading it he could almost see why the old man hadn't given it to Harry.
"Albus, he has a right to know. This was his lover and Lucius killed him simply because he was Harry's lover. Harry needs to know and he needs to be told this wasn't his fault. Someone needs to be there to comfort him about this and tell him the truth," he said adamantly.
Unfortunately Albus didn't share his point of view, "No, Harry must not know of this yet. He's not strong enough and his will power is nil, he'll go as soon as he finds out and get himself killed. We can't have that; we need him to win this war!"
Severus stared at him for a moment and when he spoke his voice was barely above a whisper, anger lacing every word, "Don't you think you've kept enough from him? He's going to hate you even more if you keep this from him! Headmaster, he'll leave you for the Dark Lord if you continue on this path."
Dumbledore looked at Snape with a barely concealed fury, "He will not leave us for that monster! He will stay where he's needed and not falter from the path I have chosen for him!"
Shocked was not even close to the word Severus would use to describe what he felt after hearing his mentor's words. All of the ill feelings he'd had were true; the great Albus Dumbledore was just using Harry as a pawn in this war and he most likely didn't care if the boy died as long as he got what he wanted.
Snape nodded, "Is that all?"
The Headmaster waved his hand irritably and Snape left, muttering under his breath about barmy old coots and meddling Headmasters. He was honestly on his way down to the Slytherin dorms, letter in hand, he had failed to return it, to let Harry know all of what he had discovered in the Headmaster's office when his arm began to burn. There was no getting around it; he had to go see Voldemort before he could speak with Harry.
"Well," he thought to himself as he grabbed his Death Eater robes and began to walk to the apparition point, "At least I'll have more information when I do get the chance to speak with him."
After blindly apparating to the spot where he would meet his master, Severus donned his mask and robes and silently walked to the meeting spot. The others began to trickle in, forming a circle, to wait for the Dark Lord to make his presence known. They were all waiting patiently, some eager and some more frightened than others, for him to arrive. All of them felt it when he arrived, the coldness, not unlike that of the presence of a Dementor, sliding over them like a blanket. Each of them crawled forward on hands and knees to kiss the hem of his robes in turn. Chills ran down their spines as he began to speak.
"Well, I see we're all here. There are a few points of business I would like to take care of before we get down to the real meaning of this meeting."
His followers nodded and mumbled as he continued, "Now, it has come to my attention that something has happened that I never gave permission for. A few parents of children at Hogwarts have informed me that Albus Dumbledore," he spat the name, "Has told them that Draco Malfoy will not be returning to finish out his education." Voldemort turned to Lucius, "Is that true, Lucius?"
The blonde man broke into a light sweat as he was addressed, but the mask on his face didn't let on to that fact, "My Lord, Narcissa and I have removed him, yes."
Voldemort's red eyes glowed a brighter red, signifying that he was angry, "And why wasn't I notified of this?"
Lucius was usually a very intelligent man, but tonight all of his years of etiquette and breeding flew out the window when he talked back to Tom Riddle, "My Lord, I wasn't aware that you had to approve what I do with my own son," he said tightly.
Six Death Eaters went tense at the words, willing Lucius to shut up. After all, they had all been there and disobeyed their master just to please Lucius' sick mind.
Voldemort just smirked, "Well, I can see that you're a fool, Lucius. When you joined me you pledged your son to me once he was old enough to join. That makes anything in his life my business. Or had you forgotten that little detail?"
Malfoy Sr. began to worry, "No, My Lord, I haven't forgotten. I merely didn't think you would care where he finished out his last year of school."
Severus snorted to himself and smirked under his mask, "Keep lying to him, Lucius," he said to himself, "It will only make your life more miserable."
"To what point and purpose do you see fit to lie to me, Lucius? You were supposed to be my most faithful follower, aside from Severus here," he waved a hand toward the Potions Master who bowed his thanks, "Yet you seem to find it more than ok to lie. Tell me, Lucius, why did you, and six of my other followers, kill your son?"
Lucius paled under his mask, "I-My Lord, I don't know what you're…"
"Crucio!" Voldemort cut him off and cast the spell, leaving Lucius writhing and screaming on the ground. When he finally lifted it, he leaned down next to the blonde man and pulled off his mask, "You are not the leader of the Death Eaters and you will not go behind my back ever again on something like this!" He hissed.
He trembled as he grasped for excuses, "My Lord, I only did what I thought necessary, what I thought you would want; to destroy Harry Potter."
Severus was laughing hysterically in his head; Lucius just kept digging himself deeper.
"I see. So you thought by killing your own son that you would destroy Harry Potter?"
"They were lovers, My Lord. I thought that it would weaken him to the point where you could kill him easily!"
"I'm well aware they were lovers, you insipid moron! Draco may have been able to turn him to our side had you not killed him! I will never understand what goes through your head, Lucius. I also know exactly what you did to him. There were Death Eaters whose children are friends with Potter! One of your moronic friends told their child about what happened and he's no doubt telling Potter at this very moment! I know for a fact that he told his friends who told their parents who, might I add, are loyal to me and informed me of what you have done! Should Potter join me, I'll gladly let him take your life for something so heinous! And if you ever betray me again, you will wish for death because what I'll do will be so much worse," he ended his little tirade in a deadly whisper which left Lucius trembling even more than he had been.
"Get the hell out of my sight," he said as he kicked the figure on the ground. Lucius disapparated as he turned back to the rest of his followers, "MacNair, Nott, Bella, Rodolphous, Rabastian, Avery." The six others moved forward, "You are all going to be punished. Be thankful you're not going to die. Yet. Crucio!"
He held them under the curse for a few minutes before lifting it then telling them to leave. After they were gone he addressed his remaining followers, "The rest of you know better than those seven, but let it be known; should any of you do the things they have done, death will be too good for you. I had other things to discuss, but now I am too infuriated with their lies. Go home; I'll speak to you at the next meeting."
The Death Eaters crawled forward, kissed the hem of his robes, then disapparated. All but one. Voldemort turned to return to the huge manor at the edge of the lawn and was stopped by a voice.
"My Lord, may I have a moment of your time?" Severus said calmly.
Voldemort turned and smiled, not a pretty smile and nodded, "But of course, Severus. Come inside and have a drink with me. I'm sure whatever it is you need to discuss is dire."
It was almost a warning that should Severus waste his time with trivial matters he too would be punished. Snape followed his master into the manor then into the study where they sat in front of the fireplace. A house elf popped into existence and poured them each a glass of scotch before popping out again.
"What was it you needed to discuss with me, Severus?" He said quietly.
He sipped his scotch for a few moments, collecting his thoughts, then answered the other man, "My Lord, I witnessed Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter getting closer over the past year, and although I wasn't thrilled about it, I think it was good for Potter."
Voldemort eyed him, "You weren't happy with it because you didn't want Potter associated with us, me, or was it because of some other reason?"
When Severus had the decency to flush slightly Voldemort chuckled, "Ahh, my dear Severus. You're quite smitten with our young Mr. Potter, aren't you?" At the other's nod he set down his glass and leaned forward slightly, "Do you think he'll leave that old fool for us?"
Snape thought about it then nodded, "I think that even if he hadn't gotten into a relationship with Draco he most likely would have anyhow. There is one slight problem, My Lord." At his master's nod he continued, "Potter is convinced you're the one who ordered Draco dead. He's quite upset over it and swears revenge. He knows Lucius is the one who did it, but he's convinced you were behind the whole thing."
The Dark Lord nodded, laughing to himself. It was almost perfect. If he played this right, Harry would fall into his hands.
"Tell him nothing of my involvement, or lack thereof. Let him think I had something to do with it. Perhaps when he comes to seek revenge then I can set his straight."
Severus nodded, "Thank you, My Lord."
"Is that all, dear Severus?"
"Yes, My Lord."
"Very well. I shall see you at the next meeting, yes?"
"As long as I can get away, My Lord. I will try my hardest."
"That's all I ask for, Severus. Out of all my loyal followers, you have always been my favorite. I can excuse some of your absences due to your profession, but try to make them minimal."
Severus knelt down to kiss the hem of his robes, "Yes, My Lord. I shall endeavor to make you happy, My Lord."
"Splendid. Now, off with you. Oh, and Severus?" The dark haired man turned, "Make sure you speak to Harry. Try to gauge how he feels about Dumbledore and I. Perhaps you can attempt to know his mind on the matter?"
Snape nodded, "I shall try. Good evening."
