Chapter 8:
Confusion and Consolation
Draco Malfoy stalked
along the corridor from the library, down the grand staircase and
across the entrance hall, walking fast, too fast. He came to a halt
just inside the main doors into the dungeons and leant against the
wall, tipping his head back to feel the cold stone against his
pounding head. A sneer played over his lips, he thought about what he
had just done. The look of disgust on her face after he violated her
mouth was perfect, well, almost. There had been something else,
something in her eyes that he couldn't place and it concerned him a
little. Pushing that doubt aside, he focussed on her struggle against
his strong grip as he came, her frantic groan and the awful retching
noise she had made. The sneer spread wide. Yes, he had hurt her, he
had made her his whore.
"Bitch. Miss
Perfect. Not so perfect now." He walked slowly back to the
Slytherin common room. Satisfaction fading slightly. The truth was,
he had still had her mouth on him, he had been inside her, her mouth
anyway. What did that make him? He despised her so deeply, that dirty
rotten blood coursing through her veins, her stuck up attitude. Yes
he wanted to hurt her, to make her feel disgusting to herself. He
wanted to violate her in the worst ways possible. He stopped for a
moment and whispered into the darkening corridor, "I'm becoming
just like my father." He wasn't at all sure he like that idea.
Hermione stood, shakily.
She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and steadied herself on
the desk beside her. Running a trembling hand over her robes,
Hermione took a deep breath. She thought about what had just
happened. She had been willing, she had been happy to take him into
her mouth, but when it had turned sour she wanted nothing but to pull
away. He had made her swallow him against her will and she felt sick.
Her stomach gave a lurch and a hand flew to her mouth in reaction,
but the sickness subsided and Hermione went to sit down. She looked
over her books and tried to get back to work. She couldn't shake the
thoughts and images from her head, couldn't focus on anything else.
In frustration she slammed the nearest book shut, the sound echoing
around the empty library, and hurriedly packed her things away. Once
back in Gryffindor tower she sat in the common room by the fire
desperately trying to make sense of her feelings. She had been
violated, she hated the feeling, but there was something under the
surface, something unpalatable to her; she wanted it to happen again.
The last week of the
holiday slipped by quietly. Hermione tried her best to get some work
done, managing a bit of what she intended. The only times she saw
Malfoy were at meals, they didn't sit anywhere near each other, so
she avoided any awkward conversations with him. But she had the
distinct impression that he was keeping an eye on her, he caught him
smirking directly at her several times and glaring at her on other
occasions. She couldn't be sure, but she thought he might have been
talking about her to Goyle once, but she didn't actually hear
anything to confirm her suspicions. The sixth year Slytherin girl she
had seen with Malfoy seemed to recover herself towards the end of the
holiday, talking with some younger Slytherins and some Ravenclaws in
her own year. Hermione thought about trying to talk to her a couple
of times, all for the sake of improving the relationship between
Gryffindor and Slytherin, of course. Each time she went to start a
conversation though, something stopped her, a nagging feeling that
she would say something she'd regret. The final words of Harry's
letter on boxing day returned to her unexpectedly, "Don't let
Malfoy get you down." She snorted with laughter at the irony of
it now.
Finally, January came and
the student body returned to Hogwarts. Hermione was waiting in the
entrance hall, her Head Girl badge pinned to her muggle jumper as a
semi-formal greeting to everyone. She caught sight of Justin among
his friends and waved to him, smiling. He came over and gave her a
quick hug.
"How was your
holiday?" She asked, grinning. His smile narrowed a little,
"Fine. How was
yours?" He glanced around, "Trapped here with Malfoy?"
He looked into her eyes, trying to read them.
"Oh fine. We hardly
saw each other." She smiled. Justin tilted his head to one side,
frowned a little and nodded.
"Right."
Suddenly, Hermione was almost knocked off her feet as a familiar,
black-haired figure grabbed her in a tight hug. Justin grinned and
went back to his friends.
"Harry! Let go!"
He pulled away and was joined by Ron, Ginny and Neville they all
smiled and greeted each other and set of for Gryffindor tower, loud
chatter and banter between them and all around them. Hermione was so
relieved to see the corridors full again, the weight on her shoulders
lifted as if the heat rising from the crowd were carrying her worries
up to the rafters with it. They got to the common room and sat down
on the sofas, laughter was in abundance, stories of exploits at the
Burrow flew between them, apparently all the Weasley children had
been there, along with Harry, so the house had been pretty full and
the time eventful to say the least.
Hermione listened with a smile to
their chatter, but she noticed a lack of enthusiasm from Ron. After
half an hour or so he quietly slipped away to his dormitory, Hermione
was the only one who seemed to notice. In a break in the
conversation, Hermione leaned close to Ginny and asked in a low
voice, "Is Ron alright?" Ginny looked to where Ron had been
sitting, a frown appearing on her face.
"Huh? Mmm, let's
talk." She stood up and indicated for Hermione to follow. They
went up to Ginny's dormitory, one of her room mates was unpacking her
trunk, but Ginny went and sat on her bed, patting next to her.
Hermione cast a sideways look at the other girl but she was busy and
didn't seem to acknowledge their presence, she sat down next to
Ginny, waiting for her friend to start talking. Ginny looked intently
at Hermione and took a deep breath, "Ok, Hermione. Ron has been
really odd all last term and over the holiday. At first I thought it
was because of me and Harry. I think it was in the beginning."
"I noticed that."
Hermione nodded.
"You're an
intelligent witch, I'm sure you know that Ron has had feelings for
you for a long time." Hermione closed her eyes and breathed out
slowly. She nodded. She remembered that weird moment at the end of
term, before Ron had left for the holidays. What would have happened
if Harry and Ginny hadn't appeared when they did? She couldn't
honestly answer.
"We had a... moment
just before you all left for Christmas." Hermione said quietly,
Ginny nodded,
"I know. How do you
feel about him?"
"He's a friend,
Ginny. I think of him like a brother. There have been brief moments
where there was something else there, but no, I just don't want to
risk our friendship." Ginny sighed and nodded slowly.
"Hermione, he
doesn't just fancy you. He's in love with you. Deeply." Hermione
looked at her friend quizzically.
"No?"
"I swear. People
have been noticing something for months. I think some people assume
that you are a couple but want to keep it secret! Remember the train
ride here this year? Everyone left you alone in a compartment for a
reason. I first got suspicious of his feelings in early December when
he stopped getting embarrassed at my teasing him about it, he just
kept ignoring me. We had a little chat the other day and he
confessed." Hermione's head dropped. Why did all of her
relationships have to be so complicated? Ron, one of her best
friends, was in love with her, when she couldn't feel that way about
him, and she kept getting into sexual situations with her worst
enemy.
"This is getting
ridiculous." She said out loud without realising.
"What is?"
Ginny pressed.
"Oh I don't know."
She lied, "I wish I could snap him out of it, that's all."
Ginny sighed and looked up at the clock on the wall.
"It's dinner time.
Hermione, you need to talk to him."
"I know. I will."
The two girls left the room and returned to the common room. Together
with the other Gryffindors they headed for the great hall, but Ron
was still missing. Hermione grabbed Harry's arm and pulled him to the
back of the group, "Did you check on Ron at all?"
"Yeah. He just said
he's too tired. I'll take something up for him though." Hermione
smiled at her considerate friend. "So, how was your holiday?"
Hermione shrugged,
"Same old, same
old." Harry looked down at her with lop-sided grin.
"Uh-huh." He
said in an unbelieving tone. "You, are glowing, Hermione."
She thumped him lightly on the arm,
"I am not. You're
imagining things!" They laughed their way to dinner and enjoyed
each other's company. Hermione pushed away thoughts of her
conversation with Ginny and let herself relax with her friends.
At the end of the meal,
Harry gathered up some left over pasta into a small tub and tucked a
fork into his pocket, Hermione wrapped a piece of fruit cake in a
napkin. The two of them went ahead of the others and found Ron sat on
his bed reading his Defence Against the Dark Arts text book. When
they entered he looked up and smiled at them both.
"Hey guys. Nice
dinner?" He asked, closing his book and putting it on his
bedside table.
"Need to ask?"
Harry laughed, handing Ron the pasta and fork. He tucked in greedily.
Harry glanced at Hermione and back at Ron. With a sigh he set off for
the door,
"Where are you
going?" Ron called out, a hint of panic in his voice. Harry
turned to look over his shoulder, seeing the desperation in Ron's
eyes and the resignation in Hermione's.
"To find Ginny. See
you later." He left quickly leaving Ron and Hermione in awkward
silence. Hermione stepped closer to the bed and put the cake down
next to Ron's book.
"How are you Ron?"
She asked gently. He looked at her briefly then returned his
attention to his food.
"Ok. How are you?"
Hermione shrugged and sat next to him.
"I'm ok. I spoke to
Ginny earlier." Ron's eyes widened, but he said nothing. "Ron,
you're one of my best friends. I've been worried about you." He
looked at her, his eyes watery. There was a depth there that Hermione
had never seen before. Emotions swimming near to the surface, more
emotion than he had ever thought he was capable of.
"It's overwhelming."
He said quietly. Hermione searched his face, questioning without
words. "I don't know how to talk to you any more." She put
a hand over his and smiled softly,
"Just the way you
always have, with honesty." He looked away, down at their hands,
her soft skin against his, her perfect fingers resting on his own
rough ones.
"Hermione, I don't
know if things can ever be the way they were. You know how I feel and
I know you don't feel the same way about me. Even if we had never had
this conversation things would have been different for good, these
damn feelings of mine have changed everything." She put her arm
around his shoulders and pulled him into a tight hug.
"I'm sorry Ron. I do
love you, very much. Please don't forget that." A single tear
spilled from his right eye and trickled down his cheek. He brushed it
away and nuzzled into her shoulder, breathing her in. Hermione
stroked his hair and kissed the top of his head. No. Things would
never be the same.
