AN: Sorry for the delay
in posting this chapter. I actually struggled a bit with it. The
inspiration for this story began when I saw The Girl With The Pearl
Earring, it was such a deliciously romantic and erotic film, even
though the leading couple never touched each other. The sexual
tension portrayed was intense and believable, I wanted to do
something similar with our sexy Potions professor and favourite
leading lady! So, given what inspired me, it became a challenge when
I knew it needed to move past that tension and into action. I hope I
have managed to bridge the gap successfully and I hope you like this
little offering. More is on its way soon.

Chapter
8: The Stuff of Dreams
The new term started on a
positive note. Hermione had noticed a marked improvement in Harry's
mood. He didn't seem to be carrying such a weight on his shoulders
now and she supposed he'd unburdened his soul to Remus on new year's
eve. If she was being completely honest with herself, she was a
little saddened that he hadn't been able to come to her and Ron about
it, but she knew that he felt a connection to Remus that couldn't be
shared with them. Not just over Sirius's death, it went back before
then, back to when Remus was their teacher and Harry had learned so
much about his parents through their old friend. She hoped that in
time, Harry would share his feelings with her and Ron, but as long as
he was feeling better about things, she could wait to know.
As for Ron, the break
from school and Professor Sullivan seemed to do him the world of
good. When they returned he wasn't as preoccupied, although Hermione
could sense he was still besotted, he was apparently just doing a
better job of controlling it. Perhaps he had realised how obvious his
crush was and was embarrassed into masking it.
Hermione couldn't wait
for classes to resume, she was most eager to get back to Potions and
research with Severus. She felt an excited buzz whenever she thought
of him and a smile would come to her lips when she let her thoughts
slip back to previous times alone with him. There had been a subtly
increasing openness between them, even though he hadn't told her much
about his life, Hermione's understanding of him had developed
dramatically through getting to know his sense of humour and picking
up on the little personal things he had revealed.
The first Tuesday of the
new term arrived, Potions was after lunch and Hermione arrived ahead
of the others, anxious to see the surly professor. He had left the
hall early from lunch in a billow of black robes, his usual scowl
firmly in place. Hermione knocked on the classroom door and waited
for a reply, nodding to a couple of Ravenclaws who were walking by.
"Enter." He
snapped with his sharp tongue. Hermione opened the door and peered
round it, he was sat at his desk with a book open in front of him,
his wand pointed over his shoulder at the board behind him, the
lesson's notes were appearing there as if being handwritten very
quickly. He looked up and a hint of a smile flickered across his
face, but in an instant it was gone again. "Can I help you Miss
Granger?" He snapped quickly. Hermione moved into the room and
closed the door, she felt strangely nervous.
"Professor, I just
wanted to ask if we were working on that project tonight?" A
muscle twitched in his cheek, she felt like he was looking right
inside her with those intense black eyes of his. Something was wrong,
she could feel it. "Sir? Has something happened? What did you
have to tell Mr Weasley at new year?" He cleared his throat and
shuffled some things on his desk.
"Not here, Miss
Granger. I will expect you at my lab at seven o'clock this evening."
She nodded silently and wondered what to do with herself now. Snape
stood up and with a flick of his wand, the door swung open behind
her, catching her by surprise. "I must finish preparing for the
class, perhaps you would like to take your seat?" He turned to
the board and continued transferring the notes with his wand.
Hermione sat down and busied herself until the bell rang and her
classmates drifted in.
It was a typical lesson,
but Hermione's mind was firmly fixed on what was bothering Severus.
Harry tried to talk to her quietly, avoiding Snape's frequent glances
at the slightest hint that conversation might break out. About half
way through the lesson it dawned on him that she wasn't trying to
shush him, but was simply giving the occasional "hmm" in
response to his mutterings.
"You ok, 'Mione?"
He whispered carefully. She looked up from her note-taking and
glanced around the room.
"I'm fine. I think,
I don't know, but I think something might have happened over
Christmas that we don't know about yet." She went back to the
open book in front of her, leaving Harry hanging impatiently, when
she didn't elaborate he huffed and shoved her elbow, dragging her
attention back to him.
"Where have you got
that from? What sort of thing?"
"I don't know,
Harry, it's just a feeling. Snape seemed, well, odd when I got here.
But I don't know for sure." Harry rolled his eyes. Snape was
being odd, well that was perfectly normal. He was just about to
comment when a silky voice drifted across the dungeon towards them
from the man himself.
"Mr Potter. Do you
think you could possibly restrain yourself from gossiping until the
end of the lesson? Ten points from Gryffindor." Harry went back
to work grudgingly, Hermione tried to hide the small smile forming at
the edge of her mouth. Some things never changed.
After dinner that
evening, Hermione had to stop herself from running down to the
dungeons. There was an urgency inside her to find out what Severus
was going to tell her now on top of the general need she felt to be
in his company. She slipped into the lab to find him already at work,
a cauldron simmering away beside him as he rapidly chopped some
gnarled roots. He didn't look up when she entered or even as she sat
down opposite him. After a terribly long moment, Hermione cleared her
throat.
"Sir?" He
stopped chopping and raised his eyes. "Is everything alright?"
His face relaxed slightly and he let out an audible sigh.
"Yes, as well as can
be expected." He took a seat and shook his hair out of his face,
he looked so tired.
"How did your
mission go?"
"You know I can't
discuss it with you." He replied with a gently mocking tone.
Hermione gave him her pretend stubborn face, the one she used on Ron
when leading him to believe she wasn't going to help him with his
homework, even when they both knew she would. That was the last
straw, Severus cracked a proper smile that surprised them both.
Hermione couldn't help laughing, which in turn made Severus release a
chuckle, causing her laughter to increase.
He considered how
beautiful Hermione was when she laughed. He wished he could fix the
world with a wave of his wand or preferably a potent potion in the
drinking water, so that she could be free to laugh more often. It
wasn't fair that someone as young as she was had to carry such a
heavy burden. Although, he grudgingly admitted, Potter's load was
greater. He found it intriguing that the boy had kept his fate from
his close friends. Hermione clearly had no idea why the potion they
were working on was so crucial and she hadn't asked. It seemed enough
for her that it was something that would potentially help their side
defeat Voldemort, without going into the specifics of who would have
to do the actual killing. It finally dawned on Snape that Hermione
probably tried very hard not to think about that part, he considered
it entirely likely that any affection she might feel for him was
based on glossing over what little she did know about his past.
Hermione couldn't help
laughing at his smile, it was a warm and honest smile that she had
never expected to see on his face. It lit him up, took away the
scars, both physical and emotional and gave him a more youthful
appearance.
"You should smile
more." She voiced when her giggles subsided.
Snape felt something
lurch inside, was it gratitude? Or hope? He didn't know how to react
and an awkward moment followed. Hermione reached out a tentative hand
and placed it over his, next to the little pieces of chopped root.
Her hand was warm, he noticed and he looked at it intensely, hardly
believing she was touching him. His normally ordered mind was racing
with thoughts about her relationship with Lupin, his own competitive
drive, Hermione's position as his student. He pulled his hand away
and stood up quickly, almost knocking his stool over.
Hermione watched Severus,
her hand still lying on the bench where his had been. He turned and
walked quickly to the store cupboard and with a gulp of nerves, she
followed him. He was stood leaning against the shelves, pinching his
nose. Hermione stepped up to him, took hold of his hand and slowly
lowered it from his face. He looked down at her with a frown. She
moved closer, still holding his hand and longed for him to take over
and sweep her off her feet. With her other hand she reached up and
caressed his forehead, straightening out the furrowed brow. He
softened slightly against her gentle touch and tilted his head into
her palm. Hermione hesitated, she had been growing more and more
attracted to Severus, but until now it had really just been a
fantasy. This didn't feel real, the idea that he would feel anything
for her and act on it by simply responding well to her touch was
dreamlike to her. Could this really be happening? She wondered.
Before she could dwell on
it any further, Severus's hand took hold of her cheek and was pulling
her towards him. She closed her eyes and allowed the sensation to
sweep over her. Their lips met and there was a soft urgency to the
kiss, both of them parting their lips just a little at first,
gradually increasing the depth, tongues lightly touching each other
occasionally. His right hand was gripping her face tightly, his left
still tangled up in her own hand. Severus deepened the kiss suddenly,
his tongue seeking fuller access to her mouth as he moved his left
hand to her back and pulled her body into his. Hermione's hands went
to his shoulders and the back of his neck, she felt a burning desire
for every part of her body to be in contact with him as the kiss
became more frenzied and passionate. Severus lifted her and turned
around, pressing her against the shelves and holding her up easily.
She wrapped her legs around him and allowed a moan to escape as she
felt her core heating up.
The fiery passion was
alarmingly intense. He wasn't sure how long they had been consumed by
it, but eventually Snape had to break the connection. He pulled his
head back and gently set Hermione down, keeping one hand in her hair
and the other on her hip, painfully reluctant to let her go. They
were both short of breath, lips swollen and red and Hermione let out
a small, disbelieving laugh.
"Wow." She
gasped, bringing her fingers to her lips to dry them and feel their
tenderness. Snape pulled her into a hug, holding her face to his
chest.
"Hermione." He
murmered into her hair. It wasn't a question or a statement, he was
playing with the sound of her first name, knowing he would be using
it often, he liked what he heard. He smiled with contentment as he
felt her snuggle against him.
