CHAPTER EIGHT
Jack reappeared on the deck of Thor's ship, the panther snarling in confusion. Jack reached up and grabbed hold of the panther's head to keep it away from his neck. "Nice kitty," he said before yelling to Sam. "Carter, Zat this damn cat!"
He heard Carter running towards him and the sound of the Zat gun activating. The cat's head whipped up and he looked around wildly as he realized that he wasn't at Hogwarts any longer. He jumped off Jack and began to back up, snarling and looking around frantically. Carter shot the Zat gun at the cat and it yelped before it was knocked unconscious.
Jack heaved a sigh of relief. For a moment, he had thought he was kitty chow. He was just lucky that Thor had beamed him up when he did. He suddenly remembered Daniel and glanced around frantically. He saw Carter looking at him worriedly.
"Daniel? Where's Daniel?" Jack asked anxiously.
"We got him. Thor took him to the infirmary, or at least what passes as the infirmary. What happened, sir?" she asked curiously. She reached out, grabbed his hand and helped him off the floor. She looked over at the downed panther warily. "Did that panther attack you?" she asked, disbelief shining from her eyes.
Jack snorted. "Yep. Danny and I were doing ok at first. We were stalling, hoping that Thor would figure out the shields, until some overeager wanna-be soldier decided that the questioning wasn't going fast enough. He attacked me with his little energy stick and I knocked him out with the Zat. I grabbed Danny and we hid behind the sink. A few minutes after talking to Thor, pretty kitty here decided to attack. I have no idea where it came from. I never heard the bathroom door open or shut. It was as if he just appeared out of nowhere. He pounced on me and one of Danny's kidnappers got the jump on him and knocked him out. That's about the time Thor beamed us up, kitty cat and all," Jack explained as he looked down at the unconscious animal.
"We need to lock it up for now, until we decide what to do with it," Sam said.
Jack laughed grimly. "How about putting it out of my misery?" he suggested.
Sam frowned. "Sir, it wasn't the animal's fault. It was only acting the way it was raised," she said firmly.
"You say that because you weren't about to become its dinner," Jack said shot back.
"Yes sir," Sam replied, amused.
Jack grunted in annoyance. "All right. Help me drag it into the cargo bay. We can lock in there until we decide what to do with it. I'm all set for sending it back, but who knows, maybe Thor would like a new pet," Jack said mischievously.
Sam laughed. "Somehow, I don't see Thor with a large, black panther as a pet."
Jack smirked. "Somehow, I don't see Thor with a pet, period."
Sam and Jack reached down and dragged the large panther to the cargo bay. They put it inside and locked the doors. Jack regarded the doors thoughtfully. "Carter, is there any way to put the shield up around the door?" he asked.
Sam looked at him in confusion. "Yes, but why would you need to?" she asked.
"It's a funny feeling I have. I might be listening to Daniel too much, but there is something hinky going on. I would feel better if you put the shield up," Jack said.
Carter sighed. "Of course, sir." She reached out and touched a button beside the door.
Jack could see the shield flare up in front of the door. He felt better. He hoped he was just being paranoid, but something about Daniel telling him about the sticks doing magic struck a cord in him. He didn't know if Daniel was correct, but he would rather be safe than sorry.
He turned back to Sam and grinned. "Come on. Let's go find our wayward archeologist," he said cheerfully.
They walked to the small infirmary and entered the room. Jack bounced over to the bed that Daniel was sitting on. "Hey, you all right?" Jack asked.
Daniel nodded and groaned. "Yeah, I'm fine. I have a small headache and my back is a little sore, but other than that, I'm fine. How are you?" Daniel asked anxiously.
Jack waved his hands around airily. "Oh, you know. Fine, considering I was almost kitty food," Jack said with a snort.
"I don't think you were going to be kitty food, Jack. Dumbledore said he didn't want to hurt us," Daniel replied.
"Right and I'm going to believe some old geezer who acted like he was on drugs. I don't think so," Jack said sarcastically.
"Well, at least you got rid of the panther," Daniel sighed with relief. He hoped that Snape wasn't too pissed that they had escaped. Ah, who was he kidding? Of course, he would be pissed. Daniel snickered mentally. He would sure love to see the man's expression once he realized that they had disappeared from literally underneath him.
"Actually, the kitty seems to have come with us," Jack said casually.
Daniel's head whipped around and he stared at Jack in disbelief. "What?" he blurted out in shock.
Jack frowned warily at Daniel's extreme reaction. "Yeah, when I was beamed up, the panther was beamed up with me. Carter stunned it with the Zat and we dragged him into the cargo bay where we locked and shielded the doors. Do you have a problem with that?" he asked.
"No, I just didn't want you to hurt the panther. It's not his fault if he was raised to attack," Daniel said hurriedly.
Jack gave him a skeptical look. Daniel could clearly see that Jack didn't believe him. He hoped that Jack would just let it go. He didn't want to explain that there was more to that panther than even they realized. At least the door was shielded. More than likely, Snape still had his wand with him and once he regained consciousness, he would do everything in his power to try to escape. God, this had the makings of a huge mess. He hoped to God that Snape couldn't get past the shield. Hopefully, the wizard was ignorant when it came to modern technology.
"Why did they kidnap you, Daniel?" Carter asked, breaking the tension that had suddenly built in the room.
"Apparently, it was a case of mistaken identity," Daniel explained.
"It was the psycho chick, wasn't it?" Jack asked.
"Yes, Jack, it was the psycho chick," Daniel replied with a roll of his eyes. Sam looked at them in confusion.
"Psycho chick?" she asked.
"Some time ago, a woman came to my house and began going on about how I was her missing friend, Harry. I tried to tell her that I wasn't and after Jack finally told her off, she left. I thought that would be the end of it. However, she came back last night and kidnapped me. She was already in my apartment when I got home. She attacked me from behind. I never saw her or even heard her. She dragged me back to Hogwarts, where I confronted them. She's still adamant that I'm this Harry Potter. I don't think that she is going to stop trying to get to me," Daniel explained.
Mitchell raised his hand. "I have a question."
"Yes, you in the middle," Jack said expansively.
Mitchell smirked at Jack. He turned back to Daniel and asked, "How did they get you back to Britain so fast? If they kidnapped you late last night, then how did you get back so fast?"
Jack blinked. "Huh, you know I never thought of that. Unless they have some kind of technology"¦" Jack trailed off.
"Or even a ship?" Sam asked curiously.
Daniel shrugged. "I don't know, I was unconscious at the time."
"Well, if the domicile was surrounded by an Ancient shield, could they not very well have more Ancient technology?" Teal'c asked.
"Ah hell, that means we're going to have to back down there," Jack threw his hands up in exasperation. "That also means we're going to have to call Hammond, now that he's in charge of Homeworld Security," Jack said.
"We can't let them keep the technology, or at the very least, we need to find out where they got it. Could they have anything to do with the Trust? Or even Ba'al?" Sam asked thoughtfully.
Daniel grimaced internally. Hermione had no idea what she had done when she had kidnapped him. There was no way in hell Jack was going to let this go, not when it meant possible Ancient technology. He had a bad feeling that the SGC was about to find out about magic. Daniel bit his lip anxiously. If he told Jack and the others about his previous life, he could save the Wizarding World. Without Daniel's interference, Jack would dig until they found out everything about magic and its hidden world. It would be in danger, with the likes of the Trust, the NID and Ba'al -- who they weren't even sure was dead.
Could he do this? Could he throw away all that he had worked for to save the Wizarding World once again? Could he live with himself if the Muggle world found out about the Wizarding world? What if the NID kidnapped Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore or any of the other friends he had made before leaving the Wizarding World -- and used them for their own purposes? Could he live with himself if that happened?
He couldn't. One of the main reasons he left the Wizarding world was because of the harm that had come to his friends by being associated with him. He did it to protect them, and it gave him a chance to have a life.
Resigned to his fate, he opened his mouth to confess when an alarm went off. The klaxons wailed loudly and Daniel jumped off the bed. They all ran onto the bridge of the ship.
"What's going on?" Jack asked Thor.
"There seems to be some strange energy readings in the cargo bay. The computer cannot identify it and proceeded to sound the alarm," Thor explained.
"The cargo bay?" Jack asked in shock. "That's where we put the panther."
"Indeed. Nonetheless, there are anomalous readings coming from that section," Thor reiterated.
"Can you tap into the security cameras?" Jack asked. "Let's see what's happening down there."
"One moment," Thor said as his fingers flew over the control panel. "I have the security cameras on screen."
They looked up at the screen and Daniel suppressed a groan of dismay. There, in living color, an enraged Snape was trying to blast the cargo bay doors open with his wand. Daniel looked over at Jack and saw him gaping as Snape shot spell after spell at the door.
"How in the hell did he get on board?" Jack demanded. "Where's the panther?"
"There's no sign of the panther," Sam said. She frowned thoughtfully. "Do you think that the man is a shapeshifter?"
Jack looked at her scornfully. "Right, because humans can do that."
"Well, if you remember there were those people that guarded the Salish. They were able to transform into animals," Sam explained.
"Yes, but they were *aliens* on a whole other planet, Carter" Jack said in exasperation.
"Who's to say that they haven't found their way here?" Sam said, watching the screen thoughtfully.
"He doesn't look anything like Xe'ls or T'akaya," Daniel replied. "He doesn't have the gill protrusions on his face. Remember, Jack and I saw him at Hogwarts. I got a good look at his face."
Sam sighed. "True," she conceded.
"Okay, so if he isn't an alien, what is he? How could he have possibly changed from a panther into a man?" Jack asked.
"Magic?" Daniel offered blandly.
Jack glared at him and Daniel shrugged. "I tried to tell you that they told me that they can do magic. Those stick thingies, as you like to call them, are wands. That man in the cargo hold showed me what they can do. He transformed a statue into an owl. A real, live, breathing owl that flew onto my shoulder. I don't know of any alien technology that can do that," Daniel said.
"Maybe, but that doesn't mean it's not out there," Jack said desperately.
"Face it, Jack, there are some things that just can't be explained by science," Daniel said in exasperation.
"Sure it can," Jack insisted adamantly.
"Ghosts?" Daniel inquired.
"Projections," Jack quipped.
"Moving portraits?" Daniel asked whimsically.
"Holograms," Jack retorted.
"Large moving stairs?" Daniel asked.
"Really good engineering," Jack answered with a definite nod.
Daniel sighed. "Statue transformed into an owl?"
"Drugs," Jack replied impishly.
Daniel shook his head as everyone laughed. "Jack," he whined.
"Danny," Jack whined back.
"You know, as amusing as all this friendly banter is, what are we going to do about the guy in the cargo bay?" Mitchell asked.
"We could always let him go," Daniel suggested.
Jack, Carter, Teal'c and Mitchell all stared at him in disbelief.
"What?" Daniel asked warily.
"You want to let a possible alien go?" Jack asked. "Don't you want to go all archeologist on the man?" Jack asked in disbelief.
Daniel regarded him with annoyance. "You know, I can restrain myself."
They all snorted in derision and Daniel brought out the big guns, pouting at them soulfully. They immediately backpedaled.
"I'm not saying that it's a bad thing," Jack said hastily.
Daniel sniffed indignantly and turned his nose up into the air. "Sure, whatever," he said.
They were distracted from their banter by a roar of rage from the cargo bay. They turned towards the screen and saw that the man was yelling. He threw his wand down in disgust and stomping over to the wall, leaned against it and slid down until he was sitting on the floor. His frown was ferocious.
"Mmm"¦he looks a little angry," Jack said flippantly.
"Ya think?" Mitchell asked sarcastically.
"Maybe we should go talk to him," Daniel said cautiously. "He might know the answers to some of the questions we have."
Jack frowned thoughtfully. "All right, but if I see him reach for his stick," he said, ignoring Daniel's muttered "wand." "I'll Zat him. Daniel, Teal'c you're with me. Carter, Mitchell, stay here with Thor and man the radios. I need you to let me know whether or not he goes for his stick."
"Understood, sir," Carter and Mitchell replied.
Jack, Daniel and Teal'c left the bridge and made their way to the cargo bay. They approached the door and stopped. Jack clicked the communicator that was still in his pocket. "Where is he now?" Jack asked.
"He hasn't moved since he sat down," Carter said.
"All right, we're about to take down the shield and unlock the door. Let us know if he moves," Jack said.
"Yes sir," Carter replied.
Daniel reached out and touched the control panel. He turned off the shield and unlocked the door. He looked over at Jack, a question on his face.
"Carter?" Jack asked.
"He hasn't moved an inch, sir," Carter said.
Jack was about to open the door when Daniel thought of something and grabbed his hand. "Wait a minute," Daniel said. "Sam, has the picture on the screen changed at all in the last five minutes?" Daniel asked.
"No, Daniel, it hasn't. Why?" she asked.
"Well, if they do use magic, do you think he might be able to confuse the cameras?" Daniel asked. "What if he isn't actually sitting by the wall?"
"I don't know, Daniel, that's an awfully big leap," Carter said in a skeptical voice.
"I agree, Danny. That is a big leap," Jack said doubtfully.
"Maybe, but nothing we're learning about this is making sense. Go with me here. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but at least we'll be a little more wary. I would rather be wrong than right. Just call it a feeling," Daniel said.
Jack's eyes narrowed and he sighed. "All right. Teal'c and I will enter first, you stay behind us until we know if it's safe or not."
Daniel gave him a short nod. He watched as Jack touched the control panel and the doors opened. He heard Snape yell and pushed Jack out of the way as Teal'c dropped to the ground. Teal'c raised the Zat gun and zapped Snape. He heard a thud as the professor fell to the ground.
Daniel looked at Jack and said, "Well, what do you know? I'm right again."
Jack rolled his eyes. "How did you know he was going to shoot at me?" Jack asked.
"I heard him yell. Remember in the castle, they had to utter words to make their wands work," Daniel said. "When I heard him yell, I figured he was using his wand."
Jack looked at him with an unreadable expression. He stared for a moment before his expression softened. "Thanks, Danny boy."
Daniel shook off the uneasy feeling that Jack's look had given him, and smiled. "Not a problem. That's what I am here for," Daniel said cheerfully.
They walked into the cargo bay. Jack approached Teal'c, who was staring down at Snape with a curious expression. Jack bent down and grabbed the wand. He stared at it thoughtfully. "So, this little stick is a wand, eh? Can anyone use it, I wonder?"
"O'Neill, this man has the same power I have felt on you, DanielJackson, and Oma Desala," Teal's said.
Daniel looked at Teal'c curiously. "Power?" he asked.
"Yes. I have told O'Neill that I have felt a sense of power coming from you, and Oma Desala. I also occasionally feel it from O'Neill, but only in times of great strife," Teal'c explained.
"You feel it from me?" Daniel asked nervously.
"I have only felt it when you were an Ascended being. I have not felt it sense," Teal'c explained.
Daniel heaved a silent sigh of relief. "And Oma? What about her?" he asked curiously. He wondered if the reason Teal'c could feel magic was because of the naquada in his blood, or if there might be a little Ancient gene in his line somewhere. In that case, then Sam would be able to feel magic, and as far as he knew, she felt nothing.
"Oma is quite strong in her power. I could feel it flowing from her in gentle waves. It was quite comforting," Teal'c said with a small smile.
"That's interesting. And you say you can feel the power coming from this man as well?" Daniel asked.
"Indeed I can," Teal'c replied, "but it is not as strong, nor as comforting."
"We need to get him locked up in a cell. I think I'll be holding onto his"¦stick," Jack said with contempt. "T, buddy, help me with this guy. The sooner we get him locked up, the better."
Daniel looked at him in surprise. Jack was acting kind of abrupt. He wondered what was going on. "Jack?" he asked quietly.
"Not now, Danny. We need to take laughing boy here down to a cell. We can talk later," Jack said seriously.
Daniel frowned as he heard Jack's serious tone. The butterflies that had been in stomach earlier came back. He had a sinking feeling that he was not going to like their talk. He followed them as they dragged Snape down to the ship's small cell. They carried him in and laid him down on the bench that was inside. They secured the door as they left.
Jack grunted in satisfaction. "Well, Vamp boy here won't be able to get out without his little stick."
"Vamp boy?" Teal'c inquired curiously.
"Yeah, you know, pale skin, beady eyes, dark hair. Not to mention that funky looking outfit. Now, I'm no fashion king myself but come on, that robe just screams stick a big piece of wood in my heart and slay me," Jack said with relish.
Daniel looked at him warily. "You've been watching your Buffy DVDs again, haven't you?" he asked.
Jack looked shifty for a moment. "Maybe," he drawled out.
Daniel shook his head in exasperation. "You remember what happened the last time you did that?" he asked.
"Excuse me, but we all know that Maybourne was a blood-sucking fiend," Jack protested.
"That's true, but did you really have to throw your pencil at his chest like that?" Daniel asked.
"He didn't know any different," Jack protested.
"No, but I thought Hammond was going to shoot you when you said 'It always works for Buffy'," Daniel replied.
Jack sniffed indignantly. "You're just jealous you didn't think of it."
Daniel paused a moment before nodding. "That is so true," he quipped.
Teal'c shook his head sadly at the banter, turned and walked back towards the bridge. Daniel and Jack grinned at each other. Any time they got some kind of reaction out of Teal'c, they knew they had done a good job. Daniel took one last look at Snape and followed Jack back to the bridge.
"Sir, there seems to be some kind of activity at the school," Sam said as she looked at her monitor.
Jack frowned. "What's going on?" he asked.
She shook her head. "I'm not sure, but what seems to be a large group of humans suddenly appeared at the school. That in itself wouldn't be a concern, but the readings show that they seem to be shooting their energy weapons. If Daniel is right, then there are children in that school. This doesn't look good," she explained.
"We don't anything about the people at the school. For all we know, they could be the enemy," Jack said.
Daniel debated with himself. It sounded like the school was under attack. How could've anyone have gotten past the wards? True, Thor was able to beam past them, but that was because they had superior technology. In order for the wards of Hogwarts to be bypassed, it would have to be an inside job. Someone would've had to have worked on the wards for months in order for them to be weak enough to get through. Daniel pondered what that meant for Thor. Was that the only reason Thor had been able to get past the wards? Regardless, they couldn't let the students get hurt.
"Jack, shouldn't we at least check it out?" Daniel asked.
"Daniel, these people kidnapped you and now you want to help them?" Jack asked in irritation.
"One woman kidnapped me. Over a mistaken identity. That doesn't mean we shouldn't help them. There are children in that school. You can't just leave them there without helping. You know you won't, Jack," Daniel said anxiously.
Jack rubbed his face wearily. "Fine, we'll check it out. Thor, can you still get past the shields they have surrounding the castle?" he asked.
"Indeed I can. I have been able to calibrate the transporter to match the energy readings from the shields. I am now able to beam in and out of the school," Thor replied.
"What about Mitchell, Carter and Teal'c? Will you be able to beam them out?" Jack asked.
"Yes, O'Neill. The previous problem had to do with the energy readings. As it was an offshoot of Ancient technology, you were the only that had no problem getting past the shields thanks to your gene," Thor explained. "I have now compensated for the problem."
"All right. Mitchell, Carter and Teal'c, I want you to get ready. Use Zat guns. I don't want to accidentally shoot any of the students. You have two minutes to gear up," Jack said briskly. He looked over at Daniel and said, "You too, Danny boy. I want you to have a Zat gun. I also want you to stay as close to me as possible. These people kidnapped you once; I don't want to take a chance of them turning on us."
Daniel agreed. He ran over to Sam and she handed him a Zat gun. He activated it and looked down at it with a sense of foreboding, remembering the last battle he'd participated in at Hogwarts. It had been two months before the Final Battle. One of the Hufflepuffs had become a Death Eater and had let a contingent of Death Eaters into the school. He remembered the chaos of battle, the screams of pain, the smell of blood and the sight of school members falling to their deaths. They had lost twenty students that night. They would've lost more if it hadn't been for the fifteen Slytherins who had seen the light that night. Daniel guessed the sight of their friends being cursed brought home what it would be like to be a Death Eater. He remembered the look of pride on Snape's face after the battle. He had been proud of his Slytherins. It had gone a long way toward restoring the Slytherin name.
"It's time, kids. Get your asses over here. We gotta go," Jack yelled.
They ran over to stand next to Jack. Jack looked at Thor and said, "Keep a close watch on us. If any of us is shot, then I want you to beam us up. And as soon as the shooting stops, I'm going to be calling you to beam us back. I don't want to give those people a chance to interrogate us."
Thor nodded briefly. "I understand, O'Neill," the alien replied.
Jack gave Thor a quick nod and they were beamed into chaos. There was panic all around them. Daniel could hear screaming of children, the yelling of curses and he could smell the blood. He shuddered in remembrance of the past. He hadn't wanted to be here again and yet, he was.
"Shit! I'm not sure who to shoot at," Jack yelled.
Daniel looked around frantically. He saw Dumbledore fighting with a man in a red robe and looked around the Great Hall. He noticed that instead of the black robes of the Death Eaters, their enemies were now wearing red.
"The ones in red, Jack. Shoot at the guys in the red robes," Daniel called out.
Jack nodded quickly and zatted a wizard in the red robe. He had been about to curse a first year. The little girl squeaked in terror and Jack yelled at her to hide. She nodded her thanks and took off running. Daniel began to duck and run, zatting as many as he could. He needed to make sure that he had cover. He looked up suddenly and saw a man creeping up behind Hermione, who was fighting another red-robed wizard. She wasn't aware of what was going on behind her. Daniel took off running, and as he got closer, he lifted his Zat gun and stunned the man. Hermione had just knocked her opponent out and whirled around when she heard the Zat gun go off. She looked down at the fallen wizard and then back at Daniel in shock. Daniel gave her a nod and a quick smile, then ran off, stunning another man in the process.
Time had no meaning. It seemed like hours had gone by since Daniel had beamed down with his team. He shot left and right, ducking and rolling whenever he heard someone yelling a spell. He wasn't paying attention and bumped into someone. He whirled around his, Zat gun raised, ready to fire. He froze when he saw the blue eyes of the Headmaster. Dumbledore's eyes widened momentarily and he looked around the Great Hall. Daniel followed his gaze and saw Jack, Sam, Mitchell and Teal'c weaving their way through the chaos, stunning red-robed wizards left and right. Jack was protecting a group of first years, who were hiding behind an over-turned table. Daniel was about to make his way there to help when he saw Mitchell running over. Mitchell shot one of the wizards and dived behind the table.
Daniel relaxed and turned back towards Dumbledore. Dumbledore was looking at him appraisingly. Daniel felt uncomfortable under the man's gaze and had to restrain himself from squirming like a chastened student. He arched an eyebrow and saw as the twinkle flared in Dumbledore's eyes. There was a momentary lull in the battle and the Headmaster smiled cheerfully. It had always irritated him when Dumbledore seemed to smile at inopportune times, but years and many battles later, Daniel had understood that you take enjoyment where you can find it.
"Ah, Dr. Jackson, it's nice to see you again. Why do you honor us with your presence?" Dumbledore asked pleasantly.
Daniel shrugged. "Oh, you know. I was just in the neighborhood and saw that you were having a little get-together. I thought my friends and I could stop in and say hi," Daniel said flippantly. He raised his Zat gun and shot a wizard who was creeping up behind Dumbledore. The old wizard turned and regarded the downed man, the turned back to Daniel, his gaze on the Zat gun.
"Interesting weapon you have there," Dumbledore said.
"Yeah, that's what I thought about your stick thingies," Daniel said idly. He looked around the Great Hall and noticed that the battle seemed to be dying down. He was exhausted. He hated fighting. It took so much out of him. He had thought when he left the Wizarding World and Harry Potter behind, that his life would be filled with digging up old things, not fighting aliens and equally disturbed wizards. He had left one war only to be caught up in another. Now it looked like he might be caught up in another magical war as well. He could feel the noose around his neck getting tighter. The life he had fought so hard for might be coming to an end.
Jack walked up beside him and looked at Dumbledore warily. "Hey, Danny, I thought I told you to stay close," he said, annoyed.
Daniel shrugged. "Sorry," he replied.
Jack shook his head. "You doing ok?" he asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine. A little exhausted but fine," Daniel replied.
"Good. Gandalf, nice to see you again," Jack said cheerfully.
Dumbledore smiled in amusement. "You, as well. I must say that I appreciate your help in this matter, even if it wasn't your battle," Dumbledore said.
Jack shook his head. "If it had been anywhere else but a school, I would've left you on your own. But no one harms a child while I'm around," Jack said darkly.
Dumbledore looked thoughtful before his gaze turned serious. He glanced around the Great Hall sadly. "Yes, I would like to think that everyone got out of this unscathed, but there are bound to be some casualties."
"Professor Dumbledore!" a voice called out.
Daniel turned and saw Arthur Weasley running up to the Headmaster. He slowed at the sight of the two men who were obviously Muggles. He frowned slightly and continued his approach. "Was anyone hurt?" he asked as he gazed at Jack and Daniel curiously.
Daniel restrained a smile at Mr. Weasley's curiosity. It seems he hadn't lost his love of Muggle things. He had missed the man and his generous nature. If his smile seemed a little less brighter than before, well, that was only because he had lost his wife and his daughter during the war with Voldemort. It had been a dark day for the Weasley family. Daniel still felt guilty about that. If the Weasleys hadn't been friends with Harry Potter, then the Death Eaters might've never targeted them regardless of the fact that many of the Weasleys were part of the Order of the Phoenix.
"I am not sure. We will have to wait until everyone is accounted for," Dumbledore said.
"And who might you be?" Arthur asked the two newcomers curiously.
"I'm Dr. Daniel Jackson and this is"¦" Daniel began.
"Homer," Jack cut in.
"Oh, for the poet, right?" Arthur asked eagerly.
"Er"¦right"¦whatever," Jack said testily. Daniel repressed a smile. He highly doubted that many wizards in the Wizarding World had heard of or even seen Homer Simpson. Jack's little joke was really lost on them.
"You are Muggles, yes?" Arthur asked in confusion.
"Muggles?" Daniel asked in forced curiosity.
"Non-magical people," Dumbledore explained.
"Ah, then yes, we're Muggles," Daniel said.
"But how did you get here? In fact, how did you even see Hogwarts? Or even know there was a battle going on?" Arthur asked suspiciously.
"I was invited," Daniel deadpanned.
Jack snickered and Dumbledore's lips twitched with amusement.
"Really? Who invited you?" Arthur asked, his face as open and naïve as ever.
"Mrs. Malfoy. It was an invitation I really couldn't refuse," Daniel said in a bland tone of voice.
Jack grinned widely and Dumbledore smiled. Arthur looked at them in confusion and opened his mouth to say something more, when Sam, Mitchell and Teal'c walked up to them.
"Sir, all students are accounted for," Sam reported.
"Everyone?" Jack asked.
"Yes sir. I heard a Madame Pomfrey; I believe was her name, say that everyone was here. Some of the students suffered only minor injuries. There were no fatalities among them," she said, her relief clearly seen.
"Good news, Carter. Mitchell, Teal'c, everything all right with you?" Jack asked.
"Yes sir, everything is hunky dory," Mitchell piped up.
"I am uninjured, O'Neill," Teal'c rumbled.
"O'Neill? I thought you said your name was Homer," Arthur asked in confusion.
Daniel heard Sam smother her laughter and directed an amused look her way. Her blue eyes were dancing with merriment. Mitchell looked confused and Teal'c just arched an eyebrow.
"That's my first name," Jack said puckishly.
"Ah, I see," Arthur said. It was very clear that he didn't.
"I was wondering how a mutual acquaintance of ours is doing?" Dumbledore asked.
"We were about to go out and buy some kitty litter, but imagine our surprise when we realized we didn't need it. Now that is just something you don't see every day," Jack said.
"Unless you're us," Daniel piped up.
Jack glared at Daniel. "Now, who is watching too much Buffy?" he asked.
Daniel shrugged. "Sorry, couldn't help it."
Jack snorted in exasperation. Daniel grinned at him and Jack's expression softened. He looked over affectionately, and Daniel couldn't resist the urge to flutter his eyebrows at his best friend. Jack grinned and turned his attention back to Dumbledore.
"He hasn't been harmed, has he?" Dumbledore inquired.
"Well, not so much no, but he might be a tad pissed off when we get back. These suckers hurt when you get shot with 'em," Jack said.
"Oh?" Dumbledore asked.
"Yeah, I really hate being ambushed," Jack said flatly.
"Headmaster," a voice called out. Daniel and Jack turned and saw Ron running up to them, his wand out. "What are you doing here?" Ron asked Jack angrily.
"Helping to save your ass," Jack said sarcastically.
"Where's Professor Snape?" Ron asked belligerently.
"Why? Ya miss him?" Jack asked.
"Look, you Muggle. You have no right to be here. We were doing all right without you," Ron said in annoyance.
Jack's face grew angry and he walked up to Ron, grabbed his wand out of the man's hand, and threw it on the ground. "When I got here, one of your *friends* was about to shoot at a little girl with no help in sight. When I got here, a group of children were surrounded by four of your enemies with no help in sight. When I got here, a child was lying on the ground, bleeding, and a man was standing over him, laughing as he shot his little energy weapon at him with no help in sight. If I hadn't gotten here when I did, you might've been ten children short. So sit down, shut your ass up, and be glad that I got here when I did," Jack snarled.
Ron's face was flushed with embarrassment and shame. He looked away from Jack and mumbled, "Sorry."
"Yeah, well, whatever," Jack said flatly.
"I appreciate your help, Mr. O'Neill," Dumbledore said. "As you said before, if you hadn't shown up when you did, we might have had several students killed. As much as it saddens me, however, I really must insist that you tell me how you got through the wards that surround the castle," Dumbledore finished as he raised his wand and pointed it at them.
Jack laughed snidely. "Please, Gandalf, do you really think I would come back here if I didn't have a way out?" he asked. He touched the communicator and said, "Now."
The team disappeared in a flash of bright light. Dumbledore sighed in resignation, while Ron and Arthur stared in shock.
Arthur looked at Dumbledore in disbelief and asked, "What was that? How did they get past the wards? They're Muggles."
"I'm not sure. I have been unable to get the answer out of them," Dumbledore said in annoyance. He hated not knowing, too.
"How did you meet them?" Arthur asked. "Why did they even bother helping us?"
"Let me tell you over a cup of tea. It's quite an interesting story," Dumbledore said as they walked away.
Ron stared at the spot where Dr. Jackson and his friends had been standing. His expression grew thoughtful. He didn't hear Hermione walk up to him, and started in surprise when she touched his arm. He looked over at her and asked, "Did you see them disappear?"
"I did. I saw it before. Dr. Jackson, if that is who he truly is, saved me earlier," she said with a frown. "I didn't even hear the wizard behind me."
"Hermione, remember when I stayed at your house when we were younger, after we graduated Hogwarts? I was watching your TV, and laughing at one of your shows, Star Trek, I think it was. Remember how they moved from ship to planet and back?" Ron asked.
Hermione looked at him in surprise. "Yes, I remember. Why?"
"Well, didn't it look an awful lot like what they did?" Ron asked cautiously.
Hermione laughed. "Ron, that was just science fiction. There are no such thing as aliens. You're so funny," she said, amused, as she walked away.
Ron scowled. "Yeah," he grumbled, "but then you used to think there was no such thing as magic, too. No, I think it looked a lot like that show. I wonder," he said softly and walked after Hermione.
