A/N: Well, well! It’s been awhile, eh? This would’ve been done much sooner, but my
hard drive crashed and the story was lost… I only save to my disk when I’m
finished with a chapter >:o So this
is a complete re-do of Chapter 8.
So, everyone is expecting me to come up with this wild
revelation about the other Lucius Malfoy when I really just needed to end the
chapter so I could shut off the computer and go to work. Now I actually have to come up with something
good! Ancientgirl helped me out, though…so
blame her if it’s too crazy. Lol.

Hermione stared at the picture in front of her. In it, the “other” Malfoy looked back at her
and blinked his startlingly blue eyes behind a pair of spectacles that looked
incongruous on his fine-featured face.
The fact that he had short black hair severely brushed back from his
forehead merely served to point up further differences between himself and his
twin. “You might try this one as well,”
Albus said, sliding another Wizarding photograph across the desk to her.
As she watched, the man removed his glasses and stared at
her with a rather sexy smirk (not that she was paying that much attention)
whilst unbuttoning his shirt provocatively.
“I take it the shyness wore off,” she commented wryly.
“Among other things,” the Headmaster coughed.
“I remember him from
one of Ginny’s…parties. We all commented
on how much he resembled Lucius Malfoy, but I never once thought that he was
actually Lucius himself. Well, after a
fashion.” She sighed and shook her head, trying not to look at what the picture
of Malfoy’s doppelganger was now doing.
“I thought that they were supposed to be opposites? Oh, my…”
She resolutely flipped the picture image-side-down on the desk and slid
it back across the desk. “Look, sir – I
don’t mean to be rude, but I want –no, I expect-answers
about all this. Why did you bring them
together?”
Dumbledore folded his hands, unfolded them to adjust his
glasses, and then laced his fingers back together in a nervous gesture. “Hermione, what you must understand is
that…the former Headmaster and I only did what we thought was best - we had no
reason to believe that the spell would erode over time and cause harm to the
subjects. I took a vow to monitor the
progress of the two pairs, and checked in on them from time to time …without
their knowledge, of course. After the
last confrontation with Voldemort, you may remember how Lucius was weakened –
what had happened was that he had expended so much of his magical energy that
it began to tap into the reserves that should have been there. Should
have been, but they resided in the body of his other self. I was barely able to arrive in time to save
his life – he was in the middle of a job at the time.”
Hermione goggled at him.
“A job? You mean, he was busily-”
“He had two
professions, Professor Granger. Back to
my explanation…I realized that each pair was linked by their magical
signatures, and as long as each “twin” existed, their health would suffer for
it. They are not supposed to exist apart
from each other and it is a particular danger when they come into contact with
each other and exchange energy, much like what happened when Severus and Gildas
had their duel earlier. If the energy
exchange happens at such an accelerated rate, they will both die. As it is, you may have noticed that their personality
traits were the first items to be switched.”
She looked at the floor quickly to control the blush rising
to her cheeks at this statement – yes, this was why Severus had been
increasingly “nice” to her lately. Then
she looked up in confusion, mouth opening to ask a question but Dumbledore beat
her to it.
“Yes, that is precisely the reason why Professor Murdoch’s
detention rate has been climbing steadily.”
Just the previous week, Hermione had heard of Gildas’ uncharacteristic
outbursts; he had frightened an entire class of Hufflepuffs into near-hysterics
and had caused several third years to burst into tears after he had made cruel
remarks to them. Under her careful
questioning, she found that he retained no memory of the incidents – rather
than distress him unnecessarily, she had let the matter drop. The Headmaster continued. “It is best that we find a way to reunite
them within one body for their safety as well as sanity.”
Hermione sighed, shaking her head. “They’ll never go for it, either of
them. And we’ll have to let the Malfoy
twins in on this first, anyway…if your theory is correct, they’ll be the ones
in the most danger, won’t they? I
suppose I’ll have to be the one researching all this,” she said sardonically. In response, she was handed a sheaf of
parchment detailing the development of the first spell and a somewhat
apologetic smile. “I’ll get to work on
this, then…but first I’ll need to find where those two have gone – most likely they’re having it out behind the
greenhouse.” Her mind spinning with all
the stunning information imparted to her within such a short period of time,
she took her leave and went to find Gildas and Severus.
After using a quick “Four Point” spell, she finally located
them on the selfsame walkway on which she had been “accosted” by Severus. “I still don’t like you,” she heard Gildas
informing Severus as she walked up to them.
The DADA teacher smirked and folded his arms across his chest.
“Need I remind you that the feeling is mutual?” he noticed
her walking up to them and the corner of his lips curved up in a mocking
smile. “And here comes something else we both share,” Severus said
snidely. Gildas looked puzzled for a
minute, then she watched as horrified comprehension began to dawn on his
face. He was about to speak when she
closed the distance between them and placed a comforting hand on his chest,
sliding between the two wizards easily.
“You’re not the only ones who got separated,” she said in an
effort to defuse the growing anger she sensed roiling in her lover, and she
pressed herself back against him. With a
sense of relief so keen she thought she would burst into tears, she felt him
relax and place his hands on her waist.
When the two men expressed interest in hearing more, she divulged the
information given her by Albus – Severus thought it highly amusing that Lucius had
suffered the same curse as he and it took some fast talking to convince him not
to inform the other wizard of the situation.
“Just wait until I can come up with a solution, please? He’d be here in an instant, trying to heave
Albus into Azkaban again.”
She refused to tell them the particulars of the occupation
of Malfoy’s other half, but sensed that Gildas would have the information out
of her in a heartbeat once they were alone – after all, he and the other man
were basically the “same.” Much later, he was hooting with laughter when she
told him just what Lucius Malfoy’s otherself did for a living and only the
strategic slip of a towel served to distract him from asking any more
questions.
She wasn’t about to tell him that, eventually, he would have
to be rejoined to his twin.
Especially when he told her that he loved her.
**********************************************************************
The next weeks were a blur – Hermione taught classes each
day and confounded her students with the sheer volume of homework she managed
to think up, and at night she slumped over the scrolls Albus had given her to
study; more than once Gildas had to pry her off of the desk to lead her to bed
when he found her squinting at the parchment illuminated by candles so burnt
down the flames were ready to drown in the pools of wax. Due to an unspoken arrangement, he never
spent the night (though he had certainly indicated an interest in doing so) and
didn’t press her when his advances weren’t reciprocated. She would have enjoyed staying in his arms
and allowing him to make love to her, but she didn’t feel comfortable doing so
– the Headmaster’s warning about the personality transferal was still very much
in the front of her mind whenever she saw him.
She wished at times that he weren’t so kind-hearted, but if something
happened during lovemaking and he hurt her, she knew that he would never
forgive himself and she couldn’t bear for that to happen.
She did her best to conceal the fact that Severus still
waylaid her every chance he got between classes – it was always a time when he
knew exactly that his other half was busy and couldn’t interfere. It all unraveled when, during a class break,
the DADA teacher had her on his desk – he was in one of his rougher moods and
was riding her with abandon while pulling her head back by gripping a fistful
of her hair. As she began to come
shuddering and moaning to her climax, she heard Severus laugh. He released her hair and shoved her head down
so that she faced the door…and Gildas, who stood in the doorway with a look of
shocked disgust in his eyes, raising one hand in an unconscious effort to ward
off the unwelcome sight before him. “This is what you’d rather have?” he
demanded, looking sick.
Hermione wanted to scream, wanted to cry, wanted to run to
him and tell him…something. Anything to
wipe that horrified look off of his face.
Behind her, Severus laughed again and grasped her hips to pound into her
harder– he climaxed with a satisfied cry and ruthlessly stimulated her into a
climax of her own so that she moaned and writhed while the man she loved
watched in horror. “Would you like a
turn? She’s ready for it,” Severus sneered, and laughed again as Gildas punched
a hole in the school wards long enough to Apparate away. “Why, whatever has gotten into him?” he asked
mockingly as he pulled out of her and tucked himself back in his robes. “Professor Granger…do get off my desk, if you please – it would hardly do for my sixth
years to find you sprawled across its surface like a common whore.” She scrambled off of the desk and slapped him
with all her strength on her way to the door, where he stopped her yet again
with a remark only he could be cruel enough to invent. “By the way…I rather enjoyed the audience –
perhaps next time we could inform him before the even occurs. Either that, or I have some students in my
own House that could benefit from a sexual education demonstration.” She flung
the door open so hard it crashed into the wall, making the waiting students
jump in surprise, and stalked to her own classroom where she tried to think of
the best way to salvage the situation she had gotten herself into.
Days went by where she simply taught her classes and worked
on the spell, stopping only to eat; she only slept when she fell asleep on her
papers and it was like a knife to her heart to wake up in the same place,
Gildas not transferring her to her bed like he’d always done. When they encountered each other, which they
seldom did since he avoided her like the plague, he would simply pass her by
without a word. She didn’t know how to bring him back to
her, didn’t know if she even deserved it.
Her heart ached that she had hurt him so deeply, and even Severus had
the sense to leave her be when he would have normally preyed upon her weakened
state…of course that probably had much to do with the runes she saw climbing
over his skin from time to time, an indicator that the two had been fighting.
She only prayed that
she would find the required spell in time; at the rate they were going, they
would most likely be dead long before Lucius Malfoy and his twin.
***********************************************************************
It was through a lucky break that she found her starting
point – she had returned to her quarters so frazzled by another encounter with
Gildas that she had knocked over several books in her headlong rush to her bed,
intending to fling herself onto it for a good cry. Never one to let anything happen to a book if
she could help it, she had put aside her distress and stooped to retrieve the
fallen tomes when a passage caught her attention. The last vestiges of her bad mood dissipated
at the discovery, and she began to feel the first stirrings of hope as she read
further. Two hours, several rough
drafts, and ten ink-stained fingers later, she finally had the incantation and
gestures that she would need to perform the spell. Quite forgetting herself as well as their
strained relationship, she ran all the way up the stairs of Gildas’ tower and
pounded on the door until he opened it. “What do you want? Come to rub it in my face a bit more?” he asked acidly,
settling into an aggressive posture with his hands on his hips.
When she held out the parchment with shaking hands,
realizing her gaffe, he simply looked down at her through narrowed eyes – why did he have to look so much like
Severus?- and declined to take it with a thinning of his lips. “Please,
Gildas…just take it?” She thrust the
scroll at his chest and turned to run back down the stairs, intending to
complete her mattress crying scenario when his hand came out and caught her by
the arm, halting her progress. “Gil,
I’m…I….I didn’t mean to let him….I’m sorry,” she whispered miserably, tears
already making tracks down her ink-smudged cheeks.
“You didn’t mean…? I’ve heard some lines in my day, but that one
has to be the most-no, don’t go,” he
said when she surged against his restraining hand. Gildas guided her into his rooms, closing as
well as warding the door behind them before giving her a small push towards the
sofa. She sank down on it, clasping her
hands around her knees and looking up at him – would he forgive her? “I was with you that entire time, yet you
didn’t want me...you obviously felt no such compunction about him, now did you? I loved you, and you just…” with the wards in
place and no one else to see him, he let his anger and pain show, the runes
spiraling up off of his skin and charring the rug beneath his feet; Hermione
grasped the edge of the sofa tightly to avoid being lifted into the air as
gale-force winds filled the room, smashing bottles, snuffing candles, and
tearing pictures and tapestries off of the wall.
The storm slowly
subsided and she began to relate her first sexual experience to him – the winds
tore the words from her lips but she knew he could hear every word – she told
him of her destructive relationship with Severus Snape and how it pained her to
submit to him even as she reveled in it and the feelings Snape created within
her. Then she spoke of meeting him,
falling in love with him, and how Severus had continued to prey upon her and
exploited her weakness. The pressure in
her ears eased steadily as he truly heard her words and understood them, and
then the wind died completely when she finally confessed what Dumbledore had
told her about the two pairs of men. He
dropped down into a chair on the opposite side of the room, his eyes softly
glowing in the darkness as he looked at her sadly. Drawing in a deep breath, she rose and
crossed over to him, sinking down at his feet and placing her head on his
thigh. “Gildas, I love you…I’m so
sorry,” she whispered, looking up at him.
He stared down at her and brought his fingers to touch the top of her
head lightly.
“I could never be….that,
Hermione,” he said softly.
“I love you because
you’re not.”
He drew her to her feet and guided her, not to the bedroom
as she expected, but to the bathroom.
“Have you looked at yourself?” he said calmly when she looked up to him
in surprise. She managed to retain her
composure with effort all through her bath – the feel of his hands on her body
made her realize that she never wanted anyone else to touch her, Snape’s
compulsion be damned – and stared at the wall while he washed her body and hair
carefully. When Gildas had rinsed the last
of the soap from her and lifted her easily from the huge bathtub, she felt as
though she had been cleansed of much more than dirt and ink, and burst into
tears after he wrapped a towel around her. His hand pressed her face against
his chest where she let out her misery, and his other hand stroked her back
comfortingly as she sobbed. When she had
cried herself out, he wiped her face and led her to his bedroom where he lifted
her onto the huge bed. “I don’t
think…not tonight,” he said hesitantly.
“I’d just like you to be here.”
She moved into his arms with a fresh flood of tears that he soothed away
again, and she fell asleep with her face pressed into the warm curve of his
neck.
She awoke in the middle of the night to the sensation of
being kissed and gave herself over to him gratefully, the feel of his skin
against hers bringing her a sense of peace and forgiveness. “You won’t touch him again,” Gildas
instructed her, looking down at her with glowing eyes. “He won’t touch you again…ever. If he does,
I’ll kill him.” Then his mouth came down
upon hers again and she lost herself in his possession of her.
