Chap
8: The sun
"I
was a girl once. Long straight hair, long face, long legs, people had
always defined me by what I had looked like. But never by who I had
been. This had been a mistake. Because I had been so different
inside. I used to think about life and death, about my mother who was
no more, and whom I never knew.
When
I was made a Vampire, I was not that girl anymore. I became on the
outside what I had always been on the inside. Someone dark. I had
become a female vampire. And it had changed some aspects of my
features. My bone cheeks were higher, and my hair had changed a lot.
It had passed from hazel to dark, almost black, and I swear sometimes
it turns dark red. I had inherited of a pale, soft face, and my hands
had lengthened. And my eyes, my beautiful blue eyes that I had liked
so much, had turned purple, almost red. I had become so beautiful and
womanly that it had frightened me. I can recall that I had thought it
would look strange in a mirror, but I had yet to realize that I could
never see myself in a simple mirror again. Several things had
changed. I had become allergic to garlic, but I would later fall in
love with crosses, and corset dresses. With a more.. gothic style.
The sun had become fatal to me. And the blood... the moment
Griefdaled's teeth had touched my neck, I had no more been alive..
and I would need blood to survive, until the end of my long, long
life..."
We
were going to step out of the Bank when we saw stream against us, and
smoke, and suddenly my skin burnt as if someone had applied a red hot
iron on it.
-“
ARGHHHHHH !! ”, I screamed, and Griefdaled pulled me in again,
along with Harry who was screaming bloody murder. She shook us and we
fell on the floor. Pretending that there had been a collision to
explain our screams, the Lady pushed us in a corner and lifted one of
her long snaky pale hand. She pointed at us, and whispering
something, touched Harry, and then did the same to me. I felt a wave
of cold surrounding me, and a second later it was gone. Without a
word, she pulled us towards the exit once more, and joining Sliver,
we went out, quite reluctantly for Harry and I. But nothing happened.
Looking at the sun, I understood that this was the cause of our pain.
The sun. 'No more my friend, I guess'. I had liked it so much, it
felt weird to consider it as a source of pain...
-'What
did you do to make it stop ?' I asked.
-'It
is a spell. You will have to apply it every time you go out. It can
only be done with wandless magic, which is usually not a problem for
vampires although you will have to learn.'
-'Did
you hear that, Harry? We can do wandless magic...' I said, amazed.
-'Lena,
hush, you don't want to be heard, we have to be discreet.'
Stealing
a glance at him, I noticed he looked quite anxious.
-'What
is it ? Are you expecting some.. friends .. to visit us ?' I asked,
immediately straightening.
-'I
hope not, but it is probable.'
We
sat down at the terrace of the only café opened in Diagon
Alley, the Suburb. It was decorated with flowers in pots. They surely
used to be of bright colors, seeing the old photographs of the café
hung on the exterior wall; but now they looked frozen, as if life had
left them in one blow of wind.
As
we sat at one table, I smelt a vivacious smell of coffee and sugar. I
could smell something else as well, like fresh cooked broccoli and
Brussels's horrible thing, looking like small artichoke, I couldn't
remember their name. Oh, yes: sprouts...
Anyway,
as everybody was sat, I stood up and went to the kitchen to see if
there were anybody because no waitress came and we couldn't hear a
sound. That alone should have rang a bell, but unfortunately for me
later, it didn't...
As
I entered the kitchen, the coffee smell completely overwhelmed me,
but I could still smell the other one, that horrible smell. I really
wanted to know where it came from, though, as I had never smelt
something like that before. I opened a cupboard, but found nothing,
until I opened a kind of small door near the kitchen entrance. It led
to stairs going down. There was light down there. Maybe someone was
down there, so I slowly went down, careful not to make the stairs
creak or something... Down the stairs was a small room completely
nude, except for a cupboard, and a cauldron in the middle. So this
was where the nasty smell came from. There was steam coming out of
it, and a woman was sat next to it, adding ingredients to it. She had
her back to me, and as the cauldron kept making bubbly noises, she
hadn't heard me come down.
She
looked busy, so I decided to leave her to her business, and turning
around, I almost had a heart attack. Harry was looking past my
shoulder, almost touching me, from one upper stair. I hadn't heard
him come at all ! He gestured me to follow him and went up without a
sound. Up there, he took my hand in his, and with a finger on his
mouth, crossed back the kitchen and led me to the Ladies. He closed
the door behind us, and locked it. I began to wonder about what he
wanted, when he pulled out his wand, and sent a silencing spell at
the door, not seeing that the spell hadn't actually worked.
-I
don't think a silencing charm will stop a vampire from hearing, but
still.. You shouldn't have gone down there on your own. This woman
was brewing Polyjuice Potion, and obviously was going to use it. I am
almost sure she is a Death Eater. We need to get out of here, and
quickly. She might be up to no good, and we might be the targets...'
-'What
does the Polyjuice Potion do ?'
-'It
makes you take the appearance of someone else, anybody. It's long to
brew, and means hard work. She must have a plan. We need to get out
of here.' He repeated.
-'Ok,
but what about Griefdaled and Sliver ? They won't let us go anywhere
without them ! And what will they do when I'll have to go home ? They
can't come with me !' I exclaimed, a bit panicked.
-'I
don't know, but let's go just now.' He finished, pulling me.
As
I insisted discussing the possible options, and tried to pull back,
he turned around, and pushing me against the door he had tried to
open just a minute before, he said in a funny voice:
-'Lena,
this is not a joke when I tell you this woman means us harm. I care
about you and don't want to loose you, so just come NOW !'
He
was breathing in my breath because he was so close to me, and his
lips were shaking slightly, very close to mine.
-'Ok.'
I whispered back, intimidated.
My
eyes were fixed on his lips. As I whispered, my lips had almost
touched his.
He
backed away from me, and still holding my hand tightly, opened the
door, and led us to the terrace. But while approaching our table, we
got aware of 2 things. First, that there had been a frying pan noise
in the kitchen, along with a very loud sound. And secondly, that we
had committed a grave mistake: we had our backs to the kitchen.
We
turned our heads at the same time, towards the source of the noise.
We saw nothing.
Following
Harry, we ran back to the vampires, but a spell went flying just
between us, and we stopped at once, our back to our enemy who had
stopped us with his scream. Not really a scream, actually, more like
a growl, loud and dry.
I
saw Harry getting pale at the sound of this voice, and got so
frightened about who this man might be that something weird happened:
I felt my face getting hot, and then pulled and squeezed. A second
after, I understood that my face had changed its appearance. I was
looking like someone else, and even my eyes had changed, I could feel
their shape was different. I was wondering about what would happen,
when Harry glanced at me, thought for a second about what had
happened to my face, but made up his mind and pulling on my hand,
turned back, facing the enemy.
He
was tall, had long, wet dark hair that fell in his face, and his eyes
looked quite scary, as dark as his soul. His name was Snape, and I
had seen him in my vision, what seemed years ago. He was wearing
dusty long black robes, and one of his sleeves was ripped, on the
elbow. He was looking at Harry.
-'Potter
! In my way, as always. Some things never change. I see you
managed to get yourself a new girlfriend, it's a real shame she will
die so soon. Another will die on you.'
-'You
sneaky bastard ! You will certainly die before she does, you old
coward !' Saying this, he lifted his wand, and executing a
complicated twist, saying
-'Avalente
!' But nothing happened, I mean no light came off his wand,
nothing.
Stupidly
I must say, he shook his wand, and faced Snape once again.
-'What
are you doing here ? The whole Ministry of Magic is looking for you,
and you just hang around in Diagon Alley. Who are you planning to
kill this time ?' Harry asked in a cold voice.
-'What
is it, Potter, you can't do magic ? The spell would have been good if
it had actually worked..' Snape replied in a sarcastic voice. He
started to get nearer us, until he got face to face with me. Harry
and I both stood frozen.
-“And
who would be this... charming person ? I don't recall ever seeing you
anywhere.” Snape asked, disturbed by the fact that he didn't know
me. He lifted a finger, trying to touch my chin, but I jerked away.
“ANSWER ME !” He bellowed, because I had remained silent.
-“I
don't speak to murderers.” I replied coldly.
My
voice however was the same. Harry wasn't moving. I thought that as
long as I wasn't in danger, he wouldn't do anything stupid. I was
covered by my new face, after all.
Except
that a minute or so after my face had changed, it came back to
normal. I guessed the effects were too tiring to be kept that long,
at least at first. This surely was one of my new vampiric abilities.
While
Snape digested my insult, my face burnt again, and I felt my
purple-reddish eyes coming back, with my long, thin nose, and my high
cheeks.(and my blush)
Snape
surely stopped in the track of his thoughts, for he suddenly looked
at me with a puzzled look. I could see Harry mouthing a 'Shit' in his
beard.
-'Well
well, that is certainly interesting.' And looking at Harry, and back
to me, he said: 'You have matching eyes. How lovely. Purple, reddish
eyes... those of a ... vampire? How interesting...' He finished.
Harry
decided to get the chance and leave. He pulled on my hand hard, and
we ran for our lives, our footsteps loud on the terrace of the café.
We ran all the way down to the main street, which was deserted, and
seeing an apparition point, Harry headed towards it. Snape was
closely behind us, shooting curses at us that our vampire friends,
who had vanished a few minutes ago, were deflecting. But it was
obvious that they had trouble keeping up, after so much sleep!
Arriving at the apparition point, Harry grabbed them and still
holding my hand, Apparated. I could still picture Snape's furious
face in my mind...
Everything
spun and turned, it felt like I was stuck in the middle of a
hurricane. When it finally stopped, we were facing a large, very old
and shabby looking building, in a city, though the street was
deserted and calm. Harry got near me and said in my ear: this is 12,
Grimmauld Place, Headquarter of the Order of the Phoenix. As soon as
he had said it, another smaller building appeared in the middle of
the large one. The two vampires could see it as well, showing that
they had an ability to hear quite advanced, as vampires.
In
front of us stood the Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix,
founded by my grandfather.
