CH 8 Kalevala
Still keeping her face averted, she let Severus pick her up and carry her down the stairs. When Lou was back on her feet, she followed him to the kitchen. When she stepped through the door she was distressed to see there were quite a few new faces around the table that had not been here when she went upstairs. The fact she was wearing only pyjama’s made it worse and she backed up a little. Deciding to head for the drawing room she quickly turned and left, shuffling up the steps slowly.
It was only as Severus drew out a chair for her that he noticed she was no longer with him. “Now where did she go?” He muttered.
“Probably the drawing room Severus. I think she was a little put out at the sight of so many faces, added to the fact she was in her night attire, let her be Severus, Moon can take her supper through for her.”
He nodded to the Headmaster. He could not see the point in forcing her to come back into the kitchen. She was ready for bed, and at least this way the adults could talk without having to mind what was said in front of her.
“You are right of course Albus, but I shall take her supper through, I need to ensure that she drinks all of her cocoa, otherwise I will need to find some other method of feeding her the potions she needs.”
When he entered the drawing room, he found Lou in the fireside chair with a book.
She looked up, startled at first and then she relaxed when she realised who it was.
“Do not worry, you shan’t be disturbed. What are you reading?”
“One of my own books, I didn’t touch any of the ones here, the titles are a bit odd.”
“Most will seem strange to you, what is the title of the one you are reading?” He asked, passing her the cup of laced cocoa and a small plate of sandwiches.
Lou hesitated a moment while she looked at him, then she started to read aloud.
“Then they went to seize the Sampo. And to spy the ciphered cover in dark Pohjolas stone fortress. There inside a copper mountain, well secured behind nine locks, and an inner bolt the tenth, Vainamoinen chanted softly at the copper mountains gates, there before the great fortress. Soon the fortress gates were moving and the iron hinges bulging. Then the craftsman Ilmarinen, as the second man in order, buttered the locks and greased the hinges to prevent the gates from grating and to stop the hinges creaking. Loosed the great locks with his fingers, pried the bolts up with a mattock; Now the locks turned over freely, and the heavy doors swung open.”
a/n: (Excerpt from the Kalevala)
Lou lifted her eyes from the book, to see Severus looking engrossed.
He blinked and seemed to come out of his reverie. “Kalevala, how did you come across that book?”
“It’s one of three I was given first time I was sent to a foster home. They were given to me along with several other personal things. I was told they belong to me and were to go with me wherever I went. So I keep them, and sometimes I read them. You probably think I’m stupid for keeping a bunch of books but I don …”
“Why would I think you stupid? Books are one of the greatest treasures in life. Without them too much of our learning would be lost, you do understand what the Kalevala is?”
“Hmm hm. Well, some of it, sometimes I struggle with it.”
“Show me.” He said. “Perhaps I might help you understand it better.”
Lou passed him the book when he sat opposite her on the sofa, but it wasn’t long before he raised his eyes back to Lou. “This is not Eino Friberg’s translation. Where did you learn to read this?”
Lou looked at him puzzled. “Sorry I don’t understand what you mean.”
“This book, it is written in your mothers native tongue, who taught you to read Finnish?”
“I can’t, what are you talking about?”
“I am talking about the fact that this book is written in Finnish, obviously you can read and translate the language, I was merely curious as to when and where you learned.”
“But I can’t, it’s in English, look.” Lou snatched the book from him and pointed to the script. “Duh, English.” She told him.
Severus scowled at her. “Wait here.” He said as he left the room, returning a minute later with Albus.
“Now what?” Lou wanted to know.
“Severus tells me you have a copy of Kalevala, may I see?”
“If you want, what’s the big deal with it though, it’s only a book.”
Albus studied the book for a short while, ran his wand over it a few times, then passed it back to Lou. “You are very fortunate to own this particular copy Lou. I am also pleased to see you have taken good care of it, for it is a treasure.”
“You think it might be worth a bit of money then? I don’t want to sell it, but I’m curious.”
“It is worth a great deal of money Lou, more then you can probably imagine, but continue to keep it safe. Thank you for allowing me to see it.”
They left her to carry on with her reading and stepped into the hall.
“You agree with me Headmaster, the book is written in her mothers native language.”
“It is indeed Severus, and if as she says, she cannot read Finnish, there must be some kind of obscure translation spell on it that allows only Lou to read it. I could find only a faint trace element of magic on the tome, but as to the spell itself, it is not one I have ever come across before. There again, Finland is said to be the centre from whence all magic originated. I wonder …” The Headmaster trailed off, caught up in his own musings, much to Severus’ annoyance.
“You wonder what Headmaster?”
“Nothing Severus, just an old man ensnared in his own rambling thoughts. We shall discuss this further after tomorrow.” Albus went back to the kitchen, leaving a disgruntled Potions Master standing in the hall, wondering exactly what the Headmaster had been thinking. Knowing he would not get any information from the old man until he was ready, he stepped back into the drawing room to find Lou fast asleep in the chair, her book open on her lap and a half eaten sandwich in her hand. The sleeping potion had worked and she would be asleep until morning.
“Moon.” He called softly.
“Yes Sir, you is wanting me?”
“Prepare Louhi’s bed.”
The elf disappeared with a small poof as Severus removed the sandwich from her fingers and closed the book. He rested the book on her stomach, lifted her out of the chair and carried her upstairs to bed. As Moon settled her into bed, Severus looked around the room to find where she was likely to keep her other books. Noticing an old leather school satchel poking out from beneath the bed, he stooped and pulled it out.
“Ooh. That is the miss’ most private things Sir. You is best not looking at them, the miss is nearly pulling Moon’s ears off when I’s touching it.”
“Is that so? Do you know what is in here Moon?”
“I is knowing but I’s not saying. Moon is keeping the miss’ secrets.” The elf snapped her fingers and the satchel flew from his hand and landed gently back under the bed.
He raised an eyebrow at the elf, who now stood with her arms folded defiantly, but at the same time she held a nervous look in her eyes, afraid of repercussions from the Professor.
“Very well Moon, I shall leave her in your care for the night.”
Turning on his heel, he left the room and went downstairs to join the others in the kitchen.
“Have I missed anything important?” He asked as he took his seat next to the Headmaster.
“No, I was just bringing them up to date with what we have so far. I take it you have put her to bed Severus.”
I have, the elf will stay with her until morning. Are you aware she has a satchel Headmaster. I found it under the bed when I was attempting to return her book, when I picked it up the house elf instantly removed it from my grasp. Apparently she attacked the elf at some point when she also touched it. Now she guards it for Louhi, we really need to see what she is hiding Headmaster.”
“I agree Severus, but we cannot rifle through her personal property at will. She must be persuaded to show us what she hides, besides, if the elf is guarding them for her, we both know the consequences should we so much as try and look in that satchel. Hopefully tomorrow we shall have some answers.”
“Is her leg healing Professor?” Molly wanted to know as she floated a fresh plate of pumpkin pasties onto the table in front of Severus.
“It is Molly, though she will have a scar, there may also be some permanent weakness in the leg. Many of the muscles and tendons were sliced clean through as you know, I cannot guarantee that everything will be as it was before she was hexed.”
“We do have another problem Albus.”
Everyone at the table turned to Remus Lupin. “It’s Harry’s 17th birthday tomorrow, he’ll be expecting to come into his inheritance once he’s legally an adult. What do we tell him?”
“Nothing until we return from Hogwarts with Louhi. Once we have tested her for magic and removed the binding spell, if indeed there is one, and she has met with Kreatcher, then we can decide what we must do. Until then, I am afraid that Harry must remain ignorant. I would also request that any who are available tomorrow morning, meet us at Hogwarts. Being the volatile young lady she is, any assistance would be gratefully appreciated.”
Along with Severus, Albus and Remus, several other members agreed to meet at Hogwarts the following morning at 10am. Arthur had to work, so Molly would need to stay at the Burrow. Plus Ron, Ginny and Hermione were planning on giving Harry a small birthday party. Usually he was still stuck with the Dursley’s on his birthday, but this year he’d been allowed to leave early on condition that he spend the last week of the holidays back there, Harry readily agreed.
When everyone left, Severus and Remus sat with a bottle of fire whiskey, talking about the events of the day and what they thought the outcome of tomorrow would be.
“What made you curious about the girl in the first place Lupin?”
“Her name, and the way she spelled it out to me. Her mother did exactly the same thing one day. I’d met with Sirius and Orvokki in Diagon Alley. I jokingly asked when they were going to tie the knot, more to see Sirius’ reaction than anything else. Anyway, somehow the conversation led to other things and Orvokki told us that if she ever had a daughter, she would be named Louhi Melaina. We’d never heard those names before and she rattled something off in her native language that we didn’t understand but wouldn’t translate it for us. Instead she went on to say that Louhi was a powerful witch from the Northlands and would one day return. It didn’t mean anything to us at that time, it was Finnish folklore and we weren’t particularly interested, boy do I regret not learning more.”
“Well it is too late to change things now, we shall have to let events unfold themselves. I am going to bed, who knows what tomorrow holds, and I prefer to be well rested before we embark on that little adventure.”
Severus was woken the following morning by a very downtrodden looking Moon.
“The miss wants out of her room Sir, she is wanting to leave the house.”
Severus ran a hand across his face and groaned. “What time is it?”
“6 o’clock Sir. The miss is being up for an hour and Moon is out of ideas what to do with the miss.”
“A binding and silencing spell for starters.” Severus grumbled, wanting nothing more than to roll over and go back to sleep.
“Oh no Sir. Moon is getting in big trouble if she does that. The miss might punish Moon later if I’s bad to her now.”
He opened one bleary eye and looked at the elf. “What do you mean later?”
“Moon cannot say Sir, but you is finding out for youself when you is taking her to Hogwarts. Shall I tell the miss you is coming soon?”
“Tell her whatever you want, I’m going for a shower so she will have to wait a while longer.” He told the elf as he threw back the covers and got out of bed.
Severus hated mornings, and he hated being woken up before he was ready even more.
He was in the shower and could feel Lou trying to get through the wards on her bedroom door. “Blasted girl.” He grumbled as he finished his shower, dried and dressed for the day.
As soon as he opened his door he heard her shouting, demanding to be let out. Standing to the side of the door, he lowered the wards.
Lou had been yanking at the door handle for what seemed like forever when it suddenly opened and she flew onto the landing and into the far wall. “About bloody time.” She complained. “I’ve been trying to get out of there for ages, why was I locked in?”
“Because you cannot be trusted, now, if you calm down you may accompany me to breakfast.”
Lou turned away from him and pulled a face as she silently mimicked him. “Accompany me to breakfast.” She mouthed, pulling a face and not noticing the mirror across the landing that gave Severus a clear view of what she was doing.
“Unless you wish to spend the rest of the day locked in your bedroom, I suggest you show some respect young lady.” He growled.
Lou spun and looked at him in surprise. “I didn’t say anything.”
Taking her by the shoulders he turned her to face the mirror.
Lou turned red and looked down. “How was I supposed to know you could see me?”
“It does not matter whether or not you knew, the fact is I could, and you should not have been behaving in such a manner.”
Not giving her a chance to reply, he picked her up and carried her down the stairs, plonking her back on her feet unceremoniously at the bottom.
“Try and control yourself today, I am not in the mood for one of your tirades.”
Lou said nothing as they reached the steps down to the kitchen. When he made to pick her up again she put out a hand. “Can I try on my own, please?”
“If you wish, it would seem as good a time as any.”
Standing at the bottom of the steps, he waited and watched closely as she slowly made her way down.
“I did it.” She exclaimed, excited. You wont have to carry me up and down the stairs anymore.”
“Do not expect to climb mountains when you have only climbed a hill.” He told her, turning and entering the kitchen.
Lou’s face dropped. She’d been quite pleased with herself at managing the few steps and he’d just put the mockers on it.
She gave a quick glance at the table, noticing there was nothing on it. She’d hoped there might be a birthday card.
No one else was up yet so she moved over to the stove and pulled down the frying pan and a saucepan.
“What are you doing?” He asked her.
“Making breakfast, why?”
“Because it is not necessary, the elf will see to it.”
“Moon? She’s been in my room all night, she’ll be bugg …tired.”
“House elf’s do not tire, although after dealing with you this may be the exception to the rule.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Look, I just want to make the breakfast, I’m not used to getting waited on hand and foot. Please.”
Severus was too tired to argue and passed her the food from the pantry.
It wasn’t long before the smell of sausages, bacon, eggs, mushrooms and fried bread filled the kitchen. Severus made a pot of coffee and they sat down to eat.
“At least you can cook, that is one thing in your favour.”
“Of course I can cook, I’d have starved long since if I couldn’t. I don’t like coffee by the way.”
“Then get yourself a glass of milk, it’s in the pantry.”
Severus could have used his wand to bring her the milk, but he had to admit that her cooking was good and he did not want to leave off eating, besides, he needed to add a healing potion to her food.
An hour later and Lou was still stood at the stove cooking for Remus and several other order members who turned up in the hopes that Molly would be there cooking her usual mountain of sausages.
Instead Lou was at the helm, and though a bit sceptical at first, they were soon tucking into the food and enjoying it.
Severus noticed her limping more as the morning wore on. Taking a fresh glass of milk he added a pain relieving potion to it then moved over to the stove.
“Enough.” he told her. “Come sit down now, your leg is clearly hurting you. Moon can take over from here.”
He called the elf and she happily took Lou’s place at the stove.
“Thanks, it is a bit sore, I didn’t realise there’d be so many people.”
“It is not unusual here, sit down and drink your milk.” He helped her into a chair and she drank the laced milk.
“It’s feeling better now it’s rested a bit.” She told him half an hour later. “Will it always be like this?”
“Not to this extent no, but I think you will always have a weakness in that leg. I am sorry I could not do more to relieve it.”
“It’s not your fault, it was the ars …idiot that shot that thing at me. Anyway, you said yourself it would have been a lot worse if I went to a normal hospital, I know I’d have had lots of stitches and stuff. I wish I could‘ve got him back though, given him a taste of his own medicine. What prison are they in?”
“Askaban.”
“I’ve never heard of it, where is it?”
“It is a wizarding prison, you really do not want to know about it. Suffice it to say that our assailants will not be having a merry time where they are.”
“Good, I hope they stay there a long time. Who where they? Why were they attacking you?”
“That is something I cannot tell you at the moment. We shall see how today spans out and then perhaps you may be told more about our world.”
“I caught some of their names you know. One was Malfoy and another was Gargoyle.”
Kingsley spluttered his coffee at her mispronunciation of Goyle’s name. “You know, I think she is nearer the mark then she realises.” He laughed.
“His name is Goyle, not that it will mean anything to you.” Severus said.
“Who were the other two then, one was Mac something, but I didn’t catch the other one.”
“McNair and Lestrange. How did you defeat them anyway?”
“Luck, one of them was outside my door with his back to me. I surprised him when I jumped on his back, he fell down face first and I jumped on him. The other one didn’t even see me until I jumped up in his face, he fell backwards and I think I used his ears to slam his head on the cobbles. I remember one of the others shouting something and I tried to jump on one of them, I don’t know what happened after that.”
“I am impressed, though you could quite easily have been killed, you do know that.”
“I do now, but it didn’t enter my head then, I hate bullies.”
Just then Albus strode into the kitchen. “Is everyone ready?” he asked cheerfully.
