The Grindelwald Legacy
Chapter 8
Lucy quickly learned that her gran did not trust many people, and only the select few she did tolerate were allowed into the house. The rest were kept on the doorstep by Maxi.
“Gran why didn’t you tell me you were expecting someone?”
“Because I know you don’t like the young Snape boy, and I want you to keep him occupied while I have a private talk with Albus.”
“Young Snape boy? Gran he’s ancient. Dead sexy, but ancient. Anyway, what am I supposed to do with him while you’re having your talk?” She emphasised the word talk with exaggerated motions of her fingers.
“He is not ancient dear, and you’ll think of something. He’s an excellent teacher you know, and you are a very quick learner.”
Lucy scowled and headed back to let the two men know they could come to the house.
Lucy was sent to make tea while the adults discussed whatever it was they came to discuss. That was another thing that rankled her, adults. She was sixteen for goodness sake, she wasn’t a child anymore.
Maxi sat in the doorway between the lounge and kitchen, one eye on the visitors, and an ear open at Lucy’s constant complaining that she was being treat like a kid.
She took the tea tray through and perched on the arm of the sofa, trying to catch up on the conversation. They were in the middle of talking about something called a Voldemort and Lucy soon lost interest. Remembering what her gran had said, she snuck a look at the younger wizard. When he wasn’t scowling, he looked younger than she first thought, though it was difficult to guess his age. The other one, with all the white hair, he looked to be about a thousand years old to Lucy. Then again, so did her gran. As soon as there was a lull in the conversation, Lucy turned to the dark haired wizard. “Wanna see what potions I’ve made?”
Severus stared at her in surprise. “No.” He turned back to his tea.
“We got some more puffer fish eyes, and lionfish spines. They’re better than the ones you nicked from us.” She added haughtily.
Severus spluttered his tea and tried to ignore the questioning look from the Headmaster.
“Good for you.” He said, trying to dismiss her again.
Lucy sighed exasperatedly. “The thing is, gran wants to talk to Mr Dumbledore, and you and me have to clear off for a bit.” She told him when it was obvious he wasn’t going to move.
“You can go in the garden or something on your own if you want, you don’t have to hang with me.”
Lucy stood and headed for the back door. “Come on Maxi, lets go for another walk.”
A few minutes later Severus too exited the house. “You’re not exactly subtle are you.” He stated.
“Well you don’t exactly take hints do you.” She retorted.
‘Touché.’ He thought. “I hope you have full control of that beast. What kind of dog is he anyway. He looks like a giant mop.”
“He’s a komondor, Hungarian sheepdog. He won’t hurt you unless he thinks you’re a threat, then he’ll probably rip your throat out. They’re a very protective breed.”
“Marvellous. Dare I breathe near the damned thing?”
“Yeah.” She told him with a small laugh. “Gran says I should be polite to you, and I am trying to be, but you don’t exactly make it easy you know.”
“Should I?”
“I suppose not, if it’s not in your nature. But you’re a bit...I dunno, pompous I suppose.”
“I am not pompous.”
“What are you then? You weren’t very nice in that shop the first time we met. And don’t go saying I nicked your spines because I didn’t. I was just quicker than you.”
“You were not quicker than me Miss Grindelwald, I just wasn’t expecting anyone to be rude enough to snatch them from under my nose.”
“I told you, I didn’t snatch them. Oh what’s the point. Look, gran said you’re gonna be my teacher, and we haven’t exactly got off to a good start. Wanna try again?” She held out a hand. “And my names Lucy by the way.”
“First impressions are important to me Miss Grindelwald. They tell a lot about a person.” Severus ignored the hand.
Lucy let her hand fall, a bit disappointed that he snubbed her. “Yeah? Well luckily I don’t judge a book by it’s cover, if I did, you’d be on the shelf covered in dust.”
“Is that so? And here I was under the impression you found me...now what were the words you used? ‘Good looking? The most amazing black eyes.’ Your words Miss Grindelwald, not mine.
Lucy turned beet red. “You listened. You pig.”
“Oink.” He grinned at her cheesily, he couldn’t really help it. The look of horror on her face when she found out he’d heard her earlier opinion of him was worth revealing the smile. “I wonder what other choice phrases went through your head that day.”
“Try ancient, sour faced, self opinionated old creep.” She told him huffily, clicking her tongue at maxi and storming off.
‘Ancient? Old creep? How dare she?’ He watched her march away, then smirked again. The girl certainly had a mouth on her, he was going to enjoy putting her in her place when she started school.
Unfortunately for both of them, they wouldn’t have to wait that long.

“Albus I don’t have much time left, and Lucy doesn’t know about it yet. I need to know she’ll be looked after when I’m gone. We’ve only just found each other, it’s going to be hard on her when she does find out.”
“Oh Hetty, I am so sorry. If there is anything more I can do.”
“You can help me get her up to par. She’s got a lot to learn Albus, too much. If I had the time it wouldn’t be a problem, but I haven’t. She’s got all the Grindelwald traits, and the legacy, she’s bright as a button too, powerful. But she’s a stubborn little thing, gets that from Gellert. She’s also got a soft heart Albus, I’d hate to see her get hurt.”
“I will do what I can Hetty. School closes in a week and I will do my utmost to persuade the professors who are staying, to spare some time for extra tutoring. Severus always stays at Hogwarts for part of the holiday. I am sure he will be happy to lend a hand.”
“That young whippersnapper. She’ll have him wrapped around her little finger in no time. You mark my words, the poor boy won‘t know what hit him.”
“Now that is something I would pay dearly to see my dear Hetty. Severus also has a very stubborn personality.”
“Should make for some fun then.” Hetty looked to the door, ensuring they were not being overheard before she spoke again. “She calls him ‘sex on legs’. Would you believe it.”
The old witch and wizard laughed merrily.
“So do you know who her mother is, or was.”
“Ersebet Sándor. The Sándors are an old pureblood family from Hungary, where it borders the Ukraine. She and Gellert married and were happy for a while, that much I know. Gellert resided in Nurmengard prison, but he was not a complete prisoner Albus. He was free to come and go as he pleased. He built it, who but he would know the in’s and out’s of such a place. Anyway, according to the documents I found amongst so many other things when I moved here, he married Ersebet. It was many years before Lucy showed up. Whether or not she was planned I don’t know, but Ersebet was getting on in years and died during childbirth, or soon after. Her death certificate is dated the same as Lucy’s birth certificate. Gellert could not bring up the child in Nurmengard so I am assuming he decided she would be better off in an orphanage. It surprises me that he did so, he must have known I would have cared for her. He gave her surname as Geller, probably didn’t want her associated with his own name after...well you know why.”
“That explains why her name did not stand out. What made you decide to move here Hetty? You grew up in Hungary.”
“Some flight of fancy, a need for change. I don’t know Albus. Knowing my son was so close, yet so very far removed from me was hard. I hoped if I came here I could...not forget, but readjust, accept maybe. I may have grown up in Hungary, but my own family were born and bred in England and I was born here myself. Batilda still lives in Godricks Hollow, not that we see each other much, but it’s nice to know I can apparate there if the mood takes me. Now I’m glad I did. Had I not I would never have found those hidden documents.”
“Does young Lucy know of Gellerts past?”
“Oh yes, it would have been unfair had I not told her Albus. As regards you and Gellert, she knows the two of you were good friends as young boys, nothing more. Nor does she know what you were forced to do when Gellert became too obsessed in that ridiculous search for the Hallows. She knows what pertains to her, nothing more.”
“Thank you for that Hetty. I wonder how the two of them are getting along out there?”
