The small group got ready to head up to the castle. James was able to provide Remus with shackles that he used to shackle himself to Peter. “I’m not even going to ask…” Remus shook his head as he headed down to the tunnel.
Sirius wrapped an arm around Ron to help support him and followed his friend. “I really am sorry about your leg,” he apologized. “I got a little overexcited about getting Peter.”
Ron only nodded, still in too much shock to say much of anything. James motioned to Snape to go next. “Why me?” the potions master growled.
“I’ll feel better if you stay where I can see you,” James answered.
“You don’t trust me?” Snape pouted.
“Given your actions not only in the past hour or so, but the past three years…. No.”
Snape grumbled quietly to himself but followed the others down into the tunnel. Hermione followed Snape all on her own, leaving Harry alone with his father. Harry opened his mouth to say something when James put a hand on his shoulder. “I don’t mean to sound callous, but we need to follow them,” James spoke softly.
Harry swallowed hard and followed after Hermione. There was so much he wanted to say, but he didn’t know how to say it. They caught up to everyone else pretty quickly because the groups of two were moving slowly. The tunnel was so narrow that they had to walk sideways. “Can we move this along…” Snape growled impatiently.
“Have we forgotten our little chat so soon?” James spoke up.
“No… I’m sorry,” Snape bowed his head.
“You really are going to have to show me how you do that,” Remus chuckled as he started to climb out the other end of the tunnel.
Once everyone was out the small group headed well away from the whomping willow. They hadn’t gotten very far when the clouds shifted and the full moon shone down on them. Remus’ eyes went wide as soon as he remembered that he had forgotten to take his potion.
Both Sirius and James understood the look on his face immediately and ushered everyone to stand behind them. They all watched nervously as Remus transformed. Peter took the opportunity to grab his wand and tried to attack Ron.
James reacted quickly and blocked it, sending another curse sailing back at Peter. It hit him in the face, slashing him deeply. Before James had a chance to do anything else, Peter transformed back into a rat and scampered off as fast as his little rat legs would carry him.
James was torn between going after the little traitor, and staying to protect the kids from the werewolf that was now standing in front of them and snarling menacingly. The werewolf won. Hermione screamed as the creature lunged at them, but in the blink of an eye a black dog and a panther pounced.
Everyone watched in horror as the two large animals tag teamed the werewolf to keep his attention on them. To Harry’s surprise and shock, they were ripping each other apart! Remus pinned Sirius and bit him on the back, and seconds later James jumped on the werewolf’s back and raked long sharp claws down his back. Blood was flying everywhere.
Eventually Remus gave up and ran off into the woods, but both Sirius and James were pretty badly injured. The two dark forms stumbled together down to the lake. “Sirius! Dad!” Harry called out and ran after them with Hermione right behind him.
Both men turned back into human form and lay quietly. “Dad, is there anything I can do?” Harry asked, kneeling down beside the men that suddenly meant the world to him.
James shook his head. “We’ll be all right. We’ve gotten into fights like that before.”
Just then the air around them started to grow cold. “Fuck!” James cursed out loud and looked up at the sky.
Harry wasn’t sure what was wrong until he saw hundreds of dementors swarming above them. “Get behind me,” James ordered the two teenagers. The dark creatures just hovered a moment, clearly frightened of something, but so hungry that they were thinking of attacking anyway.
Then it happened. One of them dove straight for Harry. Before anyone else had time to react blazing white fire shot from James’ hands and engulfed the dementor. The creature made a blood curdling scream and made Harry’s blood run cold. He watched in shock and horror as the blinding flames consumed it until there was nothing left.
Hermione’s eyes were wide. “That’s…” she stuttered.
“I know what it is,” James answered sharply. “But I don’t know how long I can keep it up.” He looked to the other side of the lake into a clump of bushes as he spoke.
As if the dementors heard and understood him, they started coming. James did his best, but he was tiring quickly. The night sky was alight with pure white fire, but they just kept coming. Hermione noticed the color draining from his skin and nudged Harry. “Use a protronus,” she urged.
When the first dementor passed the wall of fire Harry lifted his wand. “Ex… expecto protronus,” he cried out. A thin silvery orb shot out of the end of his wand and hovered for a moment. It was no use.
James lost his balance and fell back against a tree. He was drained and could do no more. He watched helplessly as the remaining dementors came in for the attack. Hermione fell unconscious to the ground and Harry was being lifted up. James eyes widened in fear as he realized what was going on. That filthy creature was going to kiss Harry!
James reached deep down inside him for every drop of magic he had left and conjured one last fireball. He hurled it at the dementor with the last of his strength and he fell to his knees. It screamed and dropped Harry immediately.
“A little help here!” called out as he looked to the bushes again.
Harry then stepped out from behind the bushes and pointed his wand out to the lake. “EXPECO PROTRONUM!!” he screamed. There was a blinding white light and a stag galloped out onto the water charging the dementors. The remaining creatures fled and the stag vanished.
“Well done,” James smiled softly.
“But how did you know….?” Harry asked, his confusion evident in his voice.
“A great wizard never reveals his secrets,” James chuckled. “Oh, and you better hide. Severus is coming.”
Harry wasted no time in diving back behind the bush where Hermione was waiting and staring at both men in amazement. And sure enough, Snape came marching down. “I see you took care of the dementors,” he spoke to James sourly.
“What else did you expect?” James said as he rose to his feet.
“You do realize that I’m going to have to…”
James put his finger to Snape’s mouth to quiet him. “You don’t have to do anything. Well, I take that back. You have to take Harry and his friends back up to the castle for me. And then you have to keep your trap shut about me being here.”
Snape glared at James. “You don’t expect me to not tell…”
“Yes, I do,” James cut him off again. “You can’t tell anyone. If I decide to tell him it will be my decision.”
Snape glanced down at his right hand and saw an oval cut sapphire ring on his middle finger. “I see you still have feelings for him.”
“Again, that’s my business,” James growled and stuffed his hands into his pockets. “Now be a good pet and take the kids back.”
“I want Black too,” Snape insisted. “I can’t pass up this opportunity.”
“Yes, you can,” James glared at him. “He’s an innocent man, you saw that for yourself. Now stop being a petty two year old and do as I say!”
Snape jumped a little at the command, but nodded. “All right, as you wish,” he grumbled. He magically lifted Harry and Hermione onto a stretcher and they floated back behind him.
As soon as he was out of sight the future Harry and Hermione came out of hiding. “I have to agree with Remus, how do you do that?” Harry asked with a soft chuckle.
James just shrugged. “You probably don’t want to know.”
Harry nodded and turned his attention to Sirius. “Is he going to be ok?”
Before Harry finished speaking James had disrobed and was using a dagger to cut up what was left of his robes. Hermione blushed and quickly averted her gaze. “Dad!” Harry cried out.
“What?” James said as he looked up at them. “I’m not shy.”
“Didn’t anyone ever teach you modesty?”
“Many tried, but none succeeded,” James laughed as he knelt down to bandage Sirius’ more serious wounds.
Harry shook his head and slapped his forehead. What a night. Harry had learned that his godfather was innocent and his father was still alive. And now his dad was standing in front of him and Hermione as naked as the day he was born and didn’t seem to care. “So where are you going to go now?” he asked curiously.
James shrugged. “Somewhere safe.”
Sirius groaned softly as he started to come to. He laughed when he saw James. “I see you have your clothes off already.”
James stuck his tongue out at his friend. “I was making bandages for you.”
“Can I come with you?” Harry blurted out suddenly. He knew it was a bold thing to ask, but he really didn’t want to go back to the Dursley’s.
Sirius and James just looked at each other for a moment. “Harry, we’d love to have you with us, but our lives are going to be a bit chaotic for a while,” James finally spoke. “I’m still supposed to be dead, and with Pettigrew gone, Sirius is still a convicted killer. You belong here at school.”
Harry’s heart sank. He bit his lip and nodded. “Ok then… That’s fine.”
James reached out and tilted Harry’s head up to look at him. “I’ll tell you what. At the end of term I’ll see about arranging it so you can stay with the Weasley’s. I’m sure they won’t mind.”
Harry gave his father a weak smile. Going to stay with his surrogate family would be better than going back to the family that hated him. “I’d like that.”
James pulled his son into one last hug. “You have no idea how much I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you too,” Harry replied, suddenly feeling like he could fly without a broom.
“Harry…” Hermione said as she tugged on his sleeve. “I hate to break up this reunion, but we have to get back.”
Harry nodded and reluctantly let go of his father. He took one last look at the two men before turning and running back to the castle as fast as he could.
