Chapter 8
Draco glanced at the clock, it was a quarter past five – dinner would be starting soon and as much as he wanted to wait for his return owls in private he knew his absence from dinner would draw much unwanted attention. Draco set the newly arrived box of candles aside and made toward the door leading to the common room when the sounds from the other side of the door caused him to pause.
“Yea; the stupid git made a hug fool of himself at lunch – you should have seen it Blaze…” Millicent’s shrill voice carried down the corridor from the common room.
“So the little blood-traitor weasel stands up and goes into this whole unprovoked rant about there being unnatural queers and fagots running rampant in the school and how he can’t believe that everyone is being so sycophantic and blind to the truth- …” Millicent pausing for dramatic effect “… - and here’s the best part Blaze – be belts out for the whole school to hear; Harry Potter, the golden boy is Queer!”
There was a long pause before Draco heard Millicent squeal in glee as she dropped the bomb that caused Draco to stumble back a step and clutch at his heart. He never would have guessed Weasley would be so shallow as to out his best friend so publically, he had half a mind to show the little traitor a thing or two but he knew he couldn’t as he would then be outing his own secret and there was no telling what might happen if he went to Harry’s aid in this. Draco quickly composed himself- he needed to see if his brunette would still be up for their clandestine meeting tonight. He slipped from his room and shot an icy gaze at Millicent to tell her he knew she had just been talking about Harry; Millicent swallowed hard and shivered, cradling her arm. Draco stepped through the portrait hole and made his way to the Great Hall, his quickly scrawled note to Potter held tight.

Hermione stood on the landing outside the boys’ dormitories which Harry had locked himself inside after the brutal outing he had experienced at lunch. She was desperately trying to coax Harry out and down to dinner, claiming it would get easier if he faced everyone and showed them it didn’t matter to Harry if they knew. But so far Harry claimed he would only leave if she managed to erase everyone’s memories of lunch or by some miracle make him straight and Draco a girl so his sexuality wouldn’t be front page of the Daily Profit in the morning; and since neither were possible, Hermione stood arguing through a door. She finally became frustrated to the point she threw her hands up in defeat and told Harry through the lock that she’d try to bring him back something to eat. With that said she descended the stairs, leaving Harry alone again.

When Draco arrived in the Great Hall he saw Hermione sitting alone, no weasel; but more importantly to him, no Harry. Fear and worry coated Draco’s stomach and he found that no matter how he tried he simply could not eat, he spent the next two hours of the meal staring at the door waiting to see the brunette enter. By the time the meal was drawing to a close only he, Hermione and a few straggling students remained. Fear washing through him anew, Draco exited the Great Hall to wait for Hermione, his only contact to his golden boy. Barely five minutes had passed when Hermione exited the Great Hall carrying a small empty silver platter. Draco walked over and fell into step beside her.
“Granger – give this to Potter – it’s about tonight - ” he extended the note out to her.
Hermione nodded and slipped the note into her robes before ascending the stairs up to Gryffindor tower, Draco turned and made his way to the dungeons.

Harry sat on the floor of the shower, an icy cold spray pelting his exposed flesh, all the hot water had turned cold several hours ago, but Harry had no strength or desire to move. He knew his secret was out and the school would all be a titter before long with gossip and he was sure the whole Wizarding world would know in fast succession. It wasn’t until her heard Hermione enter the boy’s dorms and call out for him that Harry stirred. She would tell him all the details of the gossip at dinner; tell him if the Profit had gotten word about his secret yet. Grabbing a towel from the hook and shutting the water off Harry exited the bathroom. He sat on the edge of his bed clad only in a towel and eyes the tray of food and the note she had brought him. She answered his inquiring gaze with a single word.
“Draco”
Harry tore into the note, the food left forgotten, Harry’s current hunger couldn’t be sated by food – and Hermione hoped his hunger would be eased soon.
“My beautiful Raven, I heard what happened at lunch today – I cannot believe his audacity and unloyalty – I would gladly hex him if you’d let me. But I digress, the purpose of this letter was not to poke ar open wounds but to ask if you had some way of moving about unseen. If you do I would advise bringing it tonight; you’ll need it for what I have planned. I promise you will love every lingering second of it – till tonight
- DM”
Harry practically fell off the bed as thought of dark and dirty deeds done in secret ran wild and why Draco would need him to been invisible. He looked at the note and at the tray and back to the note before deciding that whatever Draco had planned he would need energy and should eat. Seeing that Harry had taken to eating and seemed rather pleased about his little love note, Hermione decided to tell Harry what he had missed at supper and give him some needed advise.
“Harry …. I need to talk to you about what’s going on between you and Draco; as well as what you want to do about Ron and some damage control.” Hermione sat on the edge of his bed and looked at Harry. When she didn’t get a response she looked at her feet and continued talking. “If this gets out – if more than the school knows …. what do you think will happen? I don’t know if all the love you have for him will be enough to keep him should it get out. I doubt he will turn his back on his family and the life he’s known just for you…..If the Profit gets wind of this Harry you’ll never have a moments peace, and neither will who ever your with. Do you really think he’d stand by you through all that?”
Hermione paused and looked at Harry, who was now glaring at her. She knew Draco was a soft subject but she had to look out for him – both of them – she had indented to confront Draco after dinner but didn’t know where to start. Hermione opened her mouth to speak again but Harry cut her off.
“I’ll talk to him tonight about it – and before you say another word – I’ll take care of the Ron issue later. I’d like to enjoy tonight incase it’s my last like it.”
Hermione nodded and stood to leave the room, pausing at the door when she heard Ron’s voice. She turned back to ask Harry what he was going to do, she saw the last bit of his trainers disappear under his invisibility cloak and knew he meant to follow her out. As soon as she turned back to the door it swung open to reveal Ron, flush faced and very clearly aggravated standing in the threshold. He eyed Hermione suspiciously before carefully choosing his words.
“What are you doing here? Come to work with Harry on some other bit of news you can drop like a bombshell to ruin my life?”
Hermione snorted in disgust but bit back the venom laden words she ached to hit him with. Instead she stepped around him and spoke simply –
“No Ronald. I came to bring Harry some supper; but as you can see, he’s not here.” Hermione felt the fabric of Harry’s cloak against her hand and knew he had managed to exit the room as well; taking that as her sign; she turned on her heel and made toward the stairs when Ron gripped her wrist and held her still.
“That’s all well and good because I’d like a word with you anyways.” And with that Ron pulled Hermione into the dorm; the lock clicking closed leaving Harry alone in the hall and Hermione trapped in the room with Ron. Though he was concerned for her, time was running out for his meeting with Draco; and seeing as he had his Cloak with him a trip to Hogsmead seemed in order.

Draco had spent the last hour and a half pacing the floor of his private room waiting on the final owl with the most important piece of his plan to arrive. Heaving a sigh Draco flopped down on his bed, staring into the fire he began to plan in his mind the way he wanted tonight to go – the sound of an owl's hooting drew his attention away from the flames. Draco accepted the small emerald box and paid the owl for the delivery. Glancing side long at the clock he saw that it was already after ten, he barely had two hours left to set up. Slipping the box into his pocket, he gathered the only other thing he would need in the dungeons tonight.
