Underneath His Skin
Chapter 8
----^^-----^^------^^-------^^--------
After spending the last 15 minutes of quality time with the Fire Crabs, the trio headed to their next class – D.A.D.A. The corridors weren’t as crowded, but everyone tried their best not to look at Harry or his friends, as if pretending they weren’t even there.
“You can’t be serious!” Ron complained.
Hermione turned to face him,
“What?!”
“You’re actually trying to read that while walking?” The redhead asked.
“In case you have forgotten, Harry just went through a very complicated symptom, which could only be further explained when we read about it,” The brunette clarified.
“We already know that it’s Malfoy’s emotions! What more could it possibly be!?” Ron went off by flinging his arms in the air.
“Would you two stop it? I understand that you’re trying to help me, but I’m feeling more stressed out now than ever before, so just… I don’t know, keep it down,” Harry tried his best not to raise his voice, but his friends were able to catch on.
“Sorry, Harry,” Hermione apologized while closing the book.
Ron looked worried and decided to walk next to Hermione instead of the stressed out blonde. As they got closer to the classroom, they noticed Professor Lupin standing at the doorway.
“Good afternoon everyone… Ah, hello Harry,” Lupin happily greeted.
Harry smiled and quickened his pace toward Lupin, but as soon as he reached the doorway, Harry suddenly felt a rush of scorn towards the professor, which scared him enough to stop and take a few steps back.
“Hi Professor!” Hermione quickly distracted Lupin’s attention from the distraught Harry by running up to him.
“Hello, Ms. Granger. You look lovely today,”
“Thank you, sir!” Hermione beamed with delight.
“Lovely? She looks the same everyday!” Ron scoffed.
Hermione punched him in the arm, making Ron chuckle at the girl’s mild anger.
“That may be so, Ron, but Ms. Granger here does look lovely, whether she looks the same or not; so she can’t lose either way,”
Hermione raised her chin up, as if she won some kind of argument. Ron sighed and just nodded, not wanting to cause another spat.
“Harry, how are you holding up?” Lupin asked.
The blonde continued to struggle with his troubling emotions; torn between great respect towards the man, and the complete hatred toward the werewolf that he is…
“He’s not feeling like himself today,” Hermione stated, looking at the emotionally battered blonde.
“Are we done with these puns on Harry’s situation?” Ron teased.
Hermione attempted to sock him in the face, but Lupin quickly interfered.
“Okay students, why don’t you come inside and you two can settle this afterward, hmm?”
Hermione smiled and disappeared inside the classroom. Ron shook his head as he slowly entered as well, but Harry remained stationed a few feet away from Lupin, waiting for him enter first.
“Coming in, Harry?” the Professor asked.
Harry nodded, but still couldn’t move.
“Just give me a minute, please?” Harry had to practically force those words out.
Saying ‘please’ left a bitter taste in his mouth.
“Of course, Harry. Come in whenever you’re ready,”
Harry cautiously watched Lupin walk into the classroom, and the moment he was gone, Harry felt at ease.
‘What the bloody hell is wrong with me?! This is Lupin for crying out loud. He helped me discover the truth about my parents! He helped me discover Sirius… he helped me with almost everything! And here I stand, feeling these awful feelings that I have never felt before in my life… except towards Voldemort and Bellatrix, but I never wanted to feel those emotions again, ever…’
As soon as he finished thinking, he started to feel like he was his old self again; the Harry Potter that didn’t hold any grudges or resentment toward anything…He took a deep breath and finally stepped inside the classroom. When he entered, he saw that everyone was gathered near the middle of the clearing, where Lupin was lecturing about today’s lesson. Hermione turned around and saw how relaxed Harry seemed, so she grabbed Ron’s wrist and led him to the back to where Harry was.
“How you feeling?” She whispered.
“Better. I still need practice but I think I know how to fight off Draco’s emotions,” The blonde smiled.
“Thank heavens,” Ron let out.
“-so, let us begin. Break into groups of two and I’ll tell you when to start,” Lupin instructed.
Harry glanced around and saw that Draco had joined up with Blaise this time. They both were laughing about something, and after seeing how calm and relaxed Draco was, Harry began to glare at him.
“What is it?” Hermione asked, looking toward Draco and his posse.
“Why is he not having a tough time like me?!” Harry gestured with his chin.
Hermione giggled at Harry’s reaction, but quickly answered his question.
“Um, Harry… don’t take this the wrong way but… you’re not really one to get upset over little things like Malfoy, so I think he’s not struggling as much cause there’s nothing to struggle against…”
Harry looked mortified.
“I’m more easy to withstand because I have no grudges?!”
“Calm down, mate. It’s a good thing actually,” Ron tried to lighten up the situation, but Harry just looked disgusted.
“A good thing?! I have to struggle with his damn emotions, and yet, Draco’s running around happy as a bloody clam, because I don’t get upset as much! Do you know how weak that makes me sound?!”
“Yes,”
Harry frantically turned around, and before he had a chance to react, Draco grabbed him by the wrist and led him away from his friends.
“Malfoy, wha-?”
“Shut it! You and I are partners for today, and I will not tolerate any defiance from you, understand?!” Draco ordered as he led Harry to the far back of the classroom.
“Harry!” Hermione shouted.
The anxious blonde spun around and saw his two friends trying desperately to make it through the thick crowd of students. Draco rolled his eyes and yanked Harry forward, so that they were facing each other.
“Malfoy, what the bloody hell do you think you’re doing?! And let me go!”
Harry yanked his wrist away and gave his rival a cold stare, but Draco remained unfazed. He then looked into his own green eyes and found the one thing that he wasn’t able to see in his reflection last night…
“Draco Malfoy,”
The two boys looked up at Lupin.
“I suppose you and Harry are partners in today’s lecture?” The Professor asked.
“Of course, Professor. And it’s MR. Malfoy,” Draco stated.
Harry looked at the smirking brunette, and he practically gagged at seeing himself look so arrogant.
“Of course,” Lupin nodded before turning to Harry, “and you’re in agreement to this?” Lupin asked in concern.
Harry glanced between his rival and the Professor, and even though he was at a higher advantage at the moment, Harry didn’t want this little charade to end just yet, so he answered with a nod and added a little smile as assurance.
“Okay then, let us practice with the shield charm!” Lupin called out.
Everyone withdrew their wands and faced their partner. Harry took a quick scan around the room and saw that Hermione was teamed up with Ron near the front of the room while closely watching him and Malfoy.
“Ready...? Begin!” Lupin called out.
Draco casted out the first spell, and Harry immediately shifted out of the way.
“You’re supposed to use the shield charm, Potter!” Draco spat.
Harry smirked, casting out a curse toward the flustered brunette. Draco blocked it with the shield charm.
“You think you can outwit me, Potter?”
Harry chuckled and shifted his weight to his left side.
“I know I can,”
Draco narrowed his eyes before calling out another charm.
“Expelliarmus!”
“Stupify!”
Both spells hit each other with great speed, and evaporated into the air.
“You’re pretty quick, Potter. I believe you have me to thank for that,” Malfoy gloated.
“Are you that dense to not realize that I am in control of your body? Which means that everything I’m capable of now is not made by you!”
Malfoy lowered his wand,
“Ahhh, someone has been researching,”
Harry gulped, noticing the menacing look in his partner’s eyes.
“Well let’s see how up-to-date you really are, Flagrate!”
Draco casted a huge line of fire toward Harry, and Harry just stood in place, seemingly shocked by the sudden attack.
“HARRY!” Hermione shouted.
Draco expected his partner to cast the shield charm, but instead, Harry stood completely still; even after the casted blaze engulfed him.
“What the -?!” Ron let out.
Everyone turned and watched as Harry disappeared inside the fire.
“Stop it! Draco, you’re going to kill him!” Hermione cried out, shoving her way through the surrounding crowd.
Just then, the fire blasted away from Harry, who was unscathed by the attack. Everyone began to cheer while his two friends remained horrified by the event.
“Not bad, Potter. Let me guess, The Flame-Freezing charm?”
Harry chuckled,
“Yes, and then the shield”
“I knew it. So, are you going to thank me now?”
Harry narrowed his eyes,
“There’s no way in hell I would thank you!”
Draco shifted his weight to the right.
“I knew you’d still be as stubborn as ever. C’mon, the real duel hasn’t even started,”
Harry shifted back to his left.
“Whatever you say, Malfoy,”
The two boys began to duel, each spell being blocked by a quick shield charm. Harry noticed how swiftly he was moving; he was never this good in dueling before.
‘If only I had these skills while fighting Voldemort, I could’ve defeated him quicker than I originally had!’
Draco found that he wasn’t so good with his footwork, but his spells were much more powerful.
‘If only I was this powerful years ago, Harry wouldn’t have rejected me. Hell, NO ONE would have rejected me, and my family would be feared for far more than just our fame and fortune. I’d be considered the most powerful Malfoy descendent since my Great Great grandfather…’
In what felt like 15 minutes, the 35 minutes of class time was up.
“Okay everybody, continue to practice this charm and we’ll take the test this Friday. Enjoy you’re last class!” Lupin dismissed.
Harry quickly rushed over to his friends, who looked a bit worried.
“I’m okay, guys,” He sighed.
“Ah man, we were afraid that-“
“Out of the way, Weasley!” Draco shoved Ron aside as he exited the doorway.
“Damn piece of-!”
“Forget him. C’mon, just one more class and we won’t have to put up with him for the rest of the night,” Hermione shoved Ron out of the door.
“Harry,”
The blonde turned around to face Lupin.
“I understand if you don’t want to be around me at the moment,”
“Professor, please… it’s not you, I just didn’t feel like myself earlier,” Harry explained.
“I know. I just want you to know that if there’s anything you need, you can always come to me. I’ll do my best to help you in anyway I can,”
“Thanks Professor,” Harry smiled, before turning away.
After walking out of the classroom, Harry stopped himself and swiftly turned back around into the classroom.
“Lupin!”
“Yes?” Lupin was charming the chalkboard to reveal the next class’s lesson.
“I was wondering, why do I… I mean, why does Malfoy have a grudge against you?”
Lupin turned to Harry, and saw the same curious look he once had a few years ago.
“You really don’t know?”
Harry tried to think about the reasons, but the only thing that came up was the fact that he was a werewolf.
“No, not at all,” He confessed.
“Well, besides the fact that I’m a werewolf, I did marry his aunt. Nymphadora is the sister of Narcissa and Bellatrix, so I’m really close to the family now… figuratively speaking,”
“Ahh,” Harry understood now.
“They disowned her actually, since she married me and she wasn’t following Voldemort like her sisters were. It shouldn’t matter now, but they still refuse to speak to her, let alone acknowledge her,”
Harry chuckled,
“I’m glad she’s nothing like her sisters then,”
“Yeah, I agree,” Lupin laughed.
After several students began to enter the classroom, Harry quickly said goodbye and rushed to Potions class.
