Hermione was buttering her toast at the small table in the kitchen. Ginny had been busy feeding Teddy but had now moved onto to playing with the infant. The redhead made swooshing noises as she moved a little spoon with globs of baby food around the boy’s head like a broomstick. Ginny kept making commentary with the spoon like she was a moderator at a Quidditch game. The tiny babe gurgled as his little hands reached over to catch the spoon of food.
“Oh, Ginny, leave him be,” Hermione couldn’t help but smile at the cute display.
The redhead zoom the spoon over and under Teddy’s sight. “He will make a good Chaser for sure one day.”
Hermione bite into her toast and let the butter send pleasant shivers down her spine. The brunette took out her wand, hiding it under the table; she flicked the magical wood just once. Out of nowhere, a spoon scooped up a healthy glob of food and hovered near Ginny’s head. Teddy squeaked in surprise and happiness and his chubby little hand took hold of the utensil and shoved it in his mouth. The baby ate happily.
Ginny turned to Hermione, her eyes wide with surprise. “Oi, that was cheating.”
Hermione hid her smirk well as she sip from her coffee cup. With a shrug she said, “No, I believe that was the Golden Snitch. Teddy has won one hundred and fifty points didn’t you, Teddy?” Hermione smiled at the metamorphmagus baby who he responded with giggle and his hair turned to a perfect match of her hair.
Ginny laughed as she continue to feed Teddy, this time only a few swooshing noises. “You seem really happy, ‘Mione. Does it have to do with Lupin?”
At the mention of the man, Hermione drank her coffee heavily. It has been a few days since they really last spoke. They met during the hallways but only greeted each other with small talk then went on their way. Whenever they were in the same room together, it was mostly eating a meal with Harry and Ginny (who seem to have moved in), or reading a book in the living room. Everything else was just a breeze by.
There were many things that Hermione wanted to talk to Remus about. Hermione came across a book, tucked away in Sirius’s old room, about the matter of soul mates. It held a lot of information that could be useful. Only problem was that it was in Italian and Hermione only knew enough to know what the book was about. Hermione hoped that Remus knew Italian or someone who did. The book could tell them just what was going on.
But what Hermione really wanted to talk about was what happened in his room. He had kissed her. It was a small little kiss but it left Hermione unnerved. When Viktor kissed her and she kissed Ron, the feelings were explosive, sending her into a spin of warm feelings. Yet when the werewolf pecked her, Hermione was caught up in a whirlwind of warm feelings as the Earth crumbled and rocked under her feet. That feeling lasted for hours and the idea of experiencing it again was like taking drugs. Once she had a taste of it, Hermione could not pull herself away. It brought a feeling of euphoria whenever she thought of it.
“Aww, you are blushing,” Ginny cooed as she had finished feeding Teddy and took the seat across from Hermione. “So, what happened?”
“Nothing at all,” Hermione lied quickly, “Beside, he is older than me and nothing can happen.”
Ginny’s clear blue eyes rolled. “Like age matters with you, you dated Krum didn’t you?”
Hermione lips crinkled into a frown, “Viktor was a few years older than me. Remus is at least twenty years my senior!”
But no matter what she had said in defense, Ginny had a Cheshire cat style smirk. “Remus? Oh, you are on a first name basics are you now?”
Unlike Ron, nothing seems to get past Ginny. Hermione could feel her face turning into a darker shade of red. “It is just common courtesy. Seeing as we are-”
“Married?” Ginny attempted to fill in.
Hermione sighed, “I am starting to hate that word. Just because we are now soul mates does not mean we are married.”
“But you are living together.”
“And I am also living with Harry…does that make me married to Harry?”
Ginny had a predatory low growl emitting through her lips before she shook her head ‘no’. If Hermione had a crush that grew into love over many years only to have it ripped from her when the boy left her, Hermione would be protective of him. Hermione sighed; she realized she had that with Ron. Though, it never really blossom into her in love with him but Ron was still special to her.
“Has…has Ron said anything yet?” Hermione whispered into her cup.
“He will come around,” Ginny patted her hand in sympathy. “Ron is stubborn as a hippogriff.”
Hermione shook her head in dismay. “I try to tell myself that all the time but each time I do, it feels like empty words. I mean, how else is he going to compete against someone who is my soul mate?”
Ginny poured more tea into her cup, “Did you find anything about soul mates?”
“No, nothing yet. All I know about soul mates is that it is about two people being super compatible and having a long life together full of happiness.”
“Are you two compatible?”
Hermione looked at her, Ginny might have had Pansy Parkinson’s head magically attach to her shoulder and still Hermione would not be as shock as now. “E-Excuse me?”
Ginny sipped her tea as she shrugged her shoulders, acting like she was speaking about the weather rather soul mates. “If you are going to be soul mates with Lupin, you might find it better in the end if you are compatible or not. See if you two have things in common, something you can both enjoy doing. You know, other than reading books and being nerds.”
Hermione’s eyes rolled, noticing the playful smirk on the redheads face. “Oh haha, very funny,” she snapped backed.
Ginny picked up the dishes and carried them over to the sink for Kreacher to wash later. “Keep that up and you will turn into a female version of Snape.”
Hermione sighed and bent down to pick Teddy up in her arms. The tiny boy wrapped his arms around her neck and buried his rainbow head on her shoulder. At the moment, the door to the kitchen burst up and Hermione watched as harry rushed into the kitchen. His face was drawn back and his face was something ghosts could envy. He held a piece of paper in his right left hand, his fist shaking. Both girls looked concern.
“Harry? Are you alright?” Ginny reached out and touched his other arm softly.
Hermione peered down at the paper; she could a large glop of emerald wax with a large M raised up. She reached over to take a closer look but when Harry felt her hand, he yanked his hand back in surprise. “H-Hermione!” he looked more scared than him facing a Dementor. “Do…do you think you can get Remus for breakfast? I need to talk to Ginny in private.”
Hermione could only nod, knowing whatever had troubled Harry he would tell her later. She would keep a close eye on him though. Hermione held Teddy tight to her chest before she walked out of the kitchen. As soon as the door closed, she felt the tingle of a silencing charm wash over the kitchen. Whatever that paper was, it was not good.
--
Hermione walked along the second floor to Remus and Teddy’s room, trying her hardest to keep her heart was fluttering like a Golden Snitch. She scolded herself, telling herself that she took this path to use the bathroom and would just make a pit stop at Remus’ room. Still, when she stood in front of his door, ready to knock, she swallowed down a pit of anxiety. Memories of being in the room last night kept replaying. Some of them carried on into a fantasy of what if he didn’t stop kissing her.
Hermione rapidly knocked, hoping she could ask Remus meal plans then rush back downstairs to her room. When her fist banged against the door, the door responded by opening. Worry was her new mistress now as Hermione slid in through the open crack, her wand raised.
“Hello? Remus? Are you in here?” Hermione called out, succeeding at covering up her dread very well.
Everything looked in order, though his bed sheets were in disarray. When Hermione stepped closer, she saw three claw marks running down the pillow as feathers escaped. Her fingers pulled up a loose feather and spun it between her index and thumb.
The sound of glass smashing on stone made Hermione jumped, her heart pounding when she heard the sickening sound of something expelling from their stomach. Hermione abandoned the feather and raced forward. She nearly blasted the locked door with a powerful Alohomora as she made her way through. The sight that greeted her pulled her right back into shock.
Remus clung to the rustic looking porcelain toilet like a life preserver. His light brown hair hung over his cheek and eyes, but Hermione could see splashes of yellow sick traveling down his neck. He wheezed, his chest convulsing as he spat up again.
“Oh, sweet Merlin! Remus!” Hermione shrieked in concern, running through the broken pieces of glass to get to him.
Hermione eased the werewolf off the toilet, it was surprisingly easy as he sat up, limp. There were black bags hanging low under his now languid brown eyes. The man looked like he hadn’t slept in days.
“Hermione…”he whispered.
“How long have you been sick?” Hermione knelt down in front of him, even with him sitting down he was bigger than her.
Remus sighed, through his raw throat, sounded that a rasp, “Since this morning. The potion is just reacting bad with my stomach.”
Hermione saw the smashed vials along the bathroom tiles, among the broken glass there was tiny labels. She pulled one out, holding it out as the potion dripped from the paper. In fat and bold letters, someone inscribed ‘Wolfsbane’ in runny, purple ink.
“This isn’t Slughorn’s handwriting…” Hermione stared at the label with heavy suspicion. “Where did you get this?” Remus looked away like he was a little boy getting caught his hand stuck in the cookie jar. “Remus…” Hermione warned, if he wanted to act like a child then she would treat him as such.
“From Knockturn Alley…”
Hermione could have slapped him silly just now. “Knockturn Alley? Are you mad or just insane? You know that place is just filled with those who would take advantage of you, including giving you knocked off potions. And why did you go there when there could be a Death Eater waiting for you.”
“What other choice did I have?” he snapped, Hermione had to pull away when she swore she saw his canine teeth taking on a sharper form. Remus sighed, already sorry for his snap, he ran his hand through his hair. “There aren’t a lot of people out there who would make me a supply of Wolfsbane when I can’t pay for it.”
“What about Slughorn? Have you asked him?”
“No. He is one of those who want money for his potions…” Remus leaned against the toilet, his eyes heavy with sadness. “He cut down the price for me but I still can’t avoid all of it. I need a Severus Snape.”
“Here,” Hermione went up and fetch a small towel, damping up with water from the facet, and handed it over to Remus to wash up. “Look, unless Snape suddenly comes back to life and is offering free Wolfsbane…we will need to find you a new Potions Master.”
“Who would do such charity for a poor, shabby, old werewolf?” Remus grunted, wiping the yellow glob off his face.
“How about I do it?”
Remus paused, he looked at her like she suddenly turned into a mini Hagrid. “You? Hermione, you are brilliant but I don’t think you can make a Wolfsbane potion.”
“Well, I can try. Plus, I did made a batch of Polyjuice Potion when I was thirteen! Who can say they did that?”
Remus let a chuckle pass his lips, “The things you three got into at Hogwarts…”
Hermione inched closer, taking the damp cloth and wiped a bit of vomit from behind his ear. “Look, what other choice do you have? Either you suffer or you…or you go along with this.”
“I will try, Hermione. But, you can’t make a batch of Wolfsbane so quickly. It takes a full week and I don’t have that luxury.”
Hermione sighed, “I don’t like to play this card very often but; we will find a way because I am the smartest witch of my age. Besides, you said there were cells in the basement, we can always use them.”
The werewolf still had a worried grim look, “I know that but I’m not sure that those cells can handle a wild werewolf…”
The young Gryffindor was almost losing her patience with the former professor. She knew that he was worried but he was shooting down each idea she had. Hermione just wanted to cheer him up more than her next breath.
“And with you here, I’m not sure my wolf can handle it…” Remus admitted in a soft whisper. Hermione had to strain her ears to pick it up.
Hermione cocked her head to the side, “What do you mean by that?”
Whatever was troubling his mind was making him squirm in his spot. Remus looked like Neville before a Potion’s exam. He suddenly had more interest in the transparent shower curtain than her. “My wolf…He…” Hermione saw his Adam’s apple bob up and down. “A few days ago, when we were talking….I kissed you. The wolf wanted me to kiss you…he drove me to.”
“Oh…”
Remus let out a shaky breath that he held back for a long time. “A few days before the week of the full moon, sometimes my actions are influenced very little by the wolf. But now, since the full moon is so near…He…It is hard to control him now. If I act weird, don’t hate me for it.”
His face was close to breaking and if Hermione said anything negative to him in the slightest, his face would crack and break as easily as a chip. “I understand, Remus. Thank you for telling me.”
Remus turned back to her, his eyes still fixated above her head again. He smiled, “Thank you, Hermione.”
Both of them jumped when someone knocked on the loose door to the bathroom. Ginny stood in the doorway, looking at the mess and both of them. “Is everything alright here?”
Remus nodded and struggled to get up from the floor, his legs wobbling. Hermione was up in a flash, supporting him up. “I’m fine, Miss Weasley.”
Ginny looked at Hermione for confirmation. When she nodded to her friend, she looked at them with a new sense of seriousness. “Harry needs to talk to the both of you. It’s important.”
“We will be right down, Ginny.”
--
Hermione let Remus go on ahead, after he threw on yesterday’s clothes. Hermione cleaned up the potion spill and the helped fixed the door. When she was done, Remus was already gone. In the living room, she saw that Ginny had put Teddy away, as his play pen was empty. The three of them were grouped together, talking in hushed voices.
“What’s wrong?”
Harry walked forward and handed her a piece of parchment. At the bottom of the paper, she saw the same waxy emblem as before. “It’s from Lucius Malfoy…He wants to see you.”
