Chapter 7: All Hell Breaks Loose
How is it possible for this young woman to have such an effect on me already?
It was the first weekend after returning from break, and all week I had exasperated myself. Despite my best efforts, my mind would nearly always wander to the amazing young woman I had just began to call mine. It was particularly annoying during classes, when I would constantly have to refrain from smiling at some remembrance of her. To compensate, I was even harder on my imbecile students than usual, and their whispered grumblings assured me they realized nothing amiss.
Try as I might to be discreet, I could never help the feeling I got when Viper and I exchanged secret smiles and glances in the hallway. It was not so difficult to conceal on a day such as today, as the halls were crowded with students eager to get out the door to Hogsmeade. For some reason, I found myself going as well.
Even I could use a trip out once in awhile. Firewhiskey sounds particularly good at the moment.
I caught a glimpse of Viper at the door, probably waiting on her annoying little Gryffindor friends. I rolled my eyes and grimaced in distaste, catching her eye soon after. She gave me a smile before the terrible trio and the scrawny little Weaselette found her and rushed her out the door. I sighed and followed a good distance behind, mentally cursing the restrictions of society and propriety, wishing we were back at my manor with nothing to stop me from openly being with her.
Ah, such is life… I knew what I was getting into.

I was only half listening to my friends as we wandered into the Three Broomsticks and sat at the bar for a round or two of butterbeer. Ron and Harry were arguing, something or other about quidditch, while Hermione was lecturing Ginny about some exam or other. My thoughts were on Severus as I sipped my drink in silence.
My musings were interrupted as I caught sight of Severus through the window, making his way down the road. As usual, he held himself rigidly and glared at anyone who dared cross his path. I couldn’t stop a small smile as I watched him discreetly.
What a difference from the man I got to know. He is so menacing to everyone else, and yet so gentle to me. Who would have known that chivalry exists behind that façade?
I watched out of the corner of my eye as he entered the eatery, my friends fading into the background. He took a seat at a table in the far corner, isolating himself as usual. A server took his order, and then he turned his gaze to me. His customary dour expression softened a bit as I gave him a subtle smile.
I was jolted out of our moment by Ron elbowing me in the side.
“Earth to Viper! Have you even been paying attention to a word we’ve said?”
“Ron’s right, you’ve been a bit distant all afternoon. Are you alright?”
Harry looked genuinely concerned as he said that, and for a moment I felt guilty for keeping a secret from my friends. I brushed the guilt aside and gave the boys my usual bright smile as I said,
“I’m sorry, I’m alright. I’ve just been thinking about some of the homework due tomorrow in classes, I still have a couple essays to write for Potions and Transfiguration.”
Ginny just rolled her eyes as the boys began to tease me about being another Hermione. That got her started lecturing the boys about the importance of schoolwork, while Ginny and I just shook our heads and finished our butterbeers. Harry had bowed out of the brewing argument, but Ron and Hermione were still going back and forth by the time we finished our drinks. I saw the patrons around us begin to stare as the situation began to escalate in volume. I leaned in close to Ginny and muttered,
“Gin, I think its time we did something to diffuse this before we get banned from here.”
She and Harry agreed and quickly got between the fighting pair. I don’t know how they did it, but somehow everyone was back to laughing and joking within a few minutes. I breathed a sigh of relief and next thing I knew, I was being dragged out the door to someplace called the Shrieking Shack, which I gathered from scattered bits of conversation, was supposedly haunted. I was able to catch one last glance at Severus on my way out the door. Something in his expression had darkened, and he had several empty glasses in front of him. He followed me with his eyes as he held a half-empty glass of firewhiskey, and then was lost to sight as my friends rushed out the door, dragging me with them in a hurry to get to the shack.

I glared darkly at the students as they left, but of course none of them paid any attention. Except one.
How will this possibly work? I have nothing to offer her…
At some point my mood had shifted from amusement as those dimwits she called friends finally noticed her lack of attention, to annoyance when the know it all and the Weasel began to make a ridiculous scene, to resentment and even some anger as I watched them all leave laughing together.
How can she stand to waste her time with such simpletons? How is it that they can make her happy? I am an old fool to believe she could ever be happy with me, miserable as I am.
My thoughts continued in this manner for half an hour, and I grew angrier and more resentful with the passing of each minute, before I finally emptied my last glass and rose with a growl. I had overheard the stupid little Weasley girl mention the shrieking shack, and I was sure that was where they had gone. As a professor, I knew nothing good ever went on there. Countless students had been found there with illegal substances, and a few had even been caught in highly inappropriate situations. I wasn’t sure what I would find when I got there, but if Viper got caught doing something she shouldn’t she had damn well better have an explanation for it.

My first impression of the infamous shack was rather… lackluster to say the least. I curled my lip in distaste as I watched Harry and Ron move a loose board from the wall, giving us room to squeeze through one by one. I went along, never having been they kind to shy away from trouble or adventure. The shack was lit on the inside by sunlight filtering through the cracked walls and a hole in the roof. Dust motes danced in the shafts of light as I paced the one-room building, noting what looked like a collapsed tunnel at one point. It piqued my curiosity, but overall I was unimpressed.
“So what are we doing in here?”
Everyone looked at Ginny as she grinned mischievously and pulled a vial from her pocket. Veritaserum.
“I’m in the mood for some hard core truth or dare.”
I felt the first pang of uneasiness as the rest stared in shock. Veritaserum was a controlled substance, and we all knew there was no way Ginny could have legally gotten it. It took some fast talking for Gin to convince Hermione not to freak out, but the rest of us gradually decided to play along. We finally all sat in a circle on the dirty wooden floor as Ginny went over the rules.
“All you have to do is choose truth or dare. If you choose truth, you take the serum before you answer. If you choose dare, we do the dare right here. I will start with something easy to get things going. Hermione, truth or dare?”
“Um… truth?”
Poor Hermione had a deer in headlights expression and I could tell she was really not okay with this, but she took a drop of the serum anyway. Ginny smirked and asked,
“Are you a virgin?”
Poor Hermione blushed bright red and looked mortified. I decided I really didn’t like where this was going.
“No…”
Both boys looked shocked, but Ginny forestalled any outbursts.
“Alright, now you pick your victim.”
Hermione quickly chooses harry, who just as quickly chooses dare. Unfortunately for him, he ended up wearing Ginny’s makeup for that one. Red lipstick, blue eye shadow, and pink blush turned him into a cross-dressing clown and earned peals of laughter from the rest of us. Harry sulkily chooses me, and I ask for a dare.
“I dare you to buy the largest bottle of firewhiskey you can find, and bring it back here to the shack.”
Easy dare.
I smirked, and promised to return soon. Exiting the shack, I quickly made my way to the village’s one liquor store. Being of age, by purchase was quickly completed and I unobtrusively slipped out of the store and back to the shack, a shrunken gallon’s worth of the fiery drink in my pocket.
I rejoined my friends, pulling the whiskey out and restoring it to the proper size with a self satisfied smirk as everyone but Hermione made exclamations of approval and excitement. I took the first drink, a nice big gulp, and then passed it on to Harry with a grin. As he took a swig I turned to Gin. Beginning to feel a little emboldened by the alcohol, I decided to get a bit of revenge for Hermione.
“Gin. Truth or dare?”
I narrowed my eyes and gave her my most Slytherin smile. She deliberated nervously for a minute before finally choosing truth. My smile widened as I passed her the serum, watching as she took her dose.
“Who is your secret crush?”
Ron spluttered on a big gulp of firewhiskey as he and Harry, both being rather protective, glared at Gin and waited for an answer.
“Colin Creevey.”
The outburst from the guys was instantaneous and predictable. After a few minutes of listening to their yelling Hermione and I finally got them calmed down. Little did I know that I had opened a particularly nasty Pandora’s Box for myself.
“Viper. Truth or dare?”
I was on my next round of the bottle and took a big drink before passing it to Ron. I was unconcerned as I flippantly replied truth and took my drop of serum.
“Who is your secret crush?”
Oh shit…
I sobered up immediately, my mind racing to find a spell, a loophole, anything to deactivate the serum. It was hopeless, and within seconds I felt all the color drain from my face as I heard my own voice say,
“Severus Snape.”

I stalked the streets of Hogsmeade on my way to the shrieking shack. I was nearly there when I caught sight of Viper, alone, going the opposite direction. I concealed myself and waited for her to pass, deciding to see where she went before I let her know I was there. I trailed her to the liquor store and felt my suspicions at least partially confirmed. My temper worsened as she exited the store and returned in the direction of the shack. I followed at a distance and waited for her to re-enter the rundown hovel, then concealed myself comfortably behind a tree to listen, wait, and try to control my mounting fury.
It didn’t take long before I heard viper’s voice. I rolled my eyes at the game they were playing, and my annoyance increased when the imbeciles inside started yelling. While I felt a fleeting stroke of admiration for Viper causing disruption among the group, I was not in the mood for these silly games. I turned inward to my own thoughts, not hearing what happened next. Abruptly, a crescendo of intolerable noise erupted from the building, and before I could make sense of any of it I heard the shatter of glass, followed by bellows and a wrenching crash. I checked my initial instinct charge in, and when the dust settled I saw what had happened. Viper apparently smashed through the side of the shack in a fit of temper, with that dimwit Ron hurtling out behind her. I saw red as he pushed her, and I finally heard what he was howling about. As the rest of the pinheads followed him out.
“WHY HIM? Out of every fucking bloke in this school, WHY did it have to be the meanest, nastiest, slimiest-”
The git was cut short as viper whirled around and socked him in the gut, knocking him breathless.
“Don’t you DARE ever talk about him like that you son of a bitch!”
I was still taken aback and trying to make sense of all this mess when the she-weasel threw herself into the fray.
“Don’t you ever insult my family!”
“Get off me you little weasel!”
She flung Weasel girl away like a ragdoll and faced Weasel boy, who was being restrained with difficulty by Potter. As she braced herself in a fighting stance for the next attack, I decided it was past time to intervene. They all jumped as I bellowed,
“WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?”
I glared at each in turn and narrowed my eyes, waiting for an answer. The eldest Weasley only seemed more enraged by my appearance and broke loose from Potter, charging at me as he reached for his wand. Before I had time to react, a blur hit him from the side, sending him hurtling toward the ground a second time. Viper stood over him snarling as Potter wisely sat his full weight on his back and knocked his wand out of reach.
I was so overcome with rage that I nearly obliviated all of them right then and there. How I restrained myself and got them to my office, I will never know.

In Severus’ office down in the dungeons, I was isolated across the room from the Gryffindors. Ron was magically restrained to prevent another attack, and the rest of us were waiting silently for the punishments to start. I didn’t meet his angry stare as he looked from one of us to another, then crossed his arms and spoke in a low, dangerous voice.
“Dumbledore has graciously allowed me the pleasure of dealing with all of you, as I was the one who witnessed whatever madness that was back there. So let’s prevent the evidence shall we?”
None of us made a sound.
“Ronald Weasley initiated physical assault on a student, and also on a professor. Upon searching the shrieking shack, a shattered bottle of firewhiskey was found, as well as a vial of the controlled substance Veritaserum. Now…”
Here he paused, and the tension in the room was almost too thick to breathe through. His voice dropped another octave, and in any other setting I probably would have found it incredibly attractive.
“Who is responsible for the liquor?”
I looked him in the eye and responded as coolly as any Slytherin.
“I am professor.”
He nodded.
“And the Veritaserum?”
“No sir, I had nothing to do with procuring it and I did not know it would be involved.”
I felt the brush of his mind against mine and willingly let him see that I spoke truthfully. He nodded once more and turned his attention to the Gryffindors.
“Who then?”
Ginny raised a trembling hand and Severus narrowed his eyes dangerously.
“Very well. My judgment, upheld by Dumbledore, is as follows.”
All of us held our breath and awaited the verdict.
“Mister Weasley, for two counts of assault, one count of underage drinking, and Miss Weasley, for one count of possession and consuming of an illegal substance, you two are hereby expelled from Hogwarts.”
The snap of their wands was incredibly audible in the dead silence that followed. Ginny got so pale, she looked like she would faint. The rest of us were fearfully awaiting our sentences.
“Mister Potter. For one count of underage drinking, you have detention with Professor McGonagall for the rest of the year. Miss Granger, since you normally show at least a smidge of intelligence, Dumbledore has asked me to be lenient with you. For one count of underage drinking and one count of consuming an illegal substance, you will be serving detention with potter for the rest of the year and all Hogsmeade privileges are revoked until further notice. One thousand points from Gryffindor for each of the four of you. Now leave my sight at once!”
Once they were gone, Severus turned his attention to me. I continued to stand tall and still, looking straight ahead.
“Before I begin with you, I want to hear what you’ve got to say for yourself.”
I took a steadying breath before I replied.
“I accept full responsibility for providing the firewhiskey, and also for consuming Veritaserum. I knew better and should have listened to my better judgment. The fight that came afterward was a result of something that was said while under the influence of the serum, so I do not see how I can accept responsibility for that part.”
He glowered at me, then I felt his hand on my cheek as he gently but firmly made me look him in the eye. I knew what he wanted, and gave him free access to all memories related to the whole mess. When he was done, he lowered his hand, closed his eyes and sighed. When he looked at me again his expression was stern, but without the menace of before.
“Miss Youngblood, you are charged with three counts of providing liquor to underage students, one count of consuming an illegal substance, and two counts of assault on students. Since the assault was committed in defense of yourself and of me, those charges are dropped. For the rest, you get detention with me five nights a week, and one thousand points from Slytherin.”
I cringed and looked down as he took the points, but I knew I deserved it. I met his gaze as he stepped closer to me, softly caressing my cheek. With wandless magic, he shut and locked the door, casting several charms. I didn’t know what was about to happen, but I had a feeling I might like it.
