Chap. 8: Time off.
Harry awoke the next morning, after the Healers visit, only to find that after going to breakfast, the Healer would be taking a week off over another case. Evidently, the woman in the other case had gone apoplectic and stroked out, which the Healer was trying to help the woman recover from.
Healer Tompkins also said that Harry was well enough on his own for a few days, and that he was proceeding better than she had expected. She had also left a Pensieve for Harry to view the memories of her talk with Helena Ravenclaw, the Bloody Baron, and others, whom had spoken of their time with Harry at school.
The problem was the memories of his aunt and uncle, and they were the hardest to deal with of all. However, deal with them he did, and he viewed them, which brought more hate about what they had done to him, except now he saw them now for what they were, bigoted, jealous, prejudiced vermin, and he finally decided to banish every thought of them from his memory. If one of them died, besides Dudley, he wouldn’t turn his head in as much to notice it. Good riddance to bad rubbish, especially his uncle and his fat arse sister.
Every day Harry would get up to eat breakfast and talk with Draco and Aberforth, who were staying there to see that he was taken care of. He also talked with them during lunch and at supper every afternoon, and sometimes during tea time. He had gone back to his room after this, or sometimes took a walk outside, while keeping close to the manor, which he found didn’t make the bracelet start to hurt his wrist. Plus, he had started to read a bunch of books from the manors library.
During his sixth day, Harry ventured out of his room to find Draco and Aberforth sitting in the drawing room, laughing and talking away. When they saw Harry, they invited him to join them, which he did, but he sat down with a nervous look to him. He stayed silent for a while, listening to the two wizards banter about old and new Quidditch maneuvers, until finally, he spoke.
“Draco was always a good Quidditch player who never got noticed”. Harry mumbled. “He was the only competition I had, to be honest, and I miss that”.
“Well, err, thanks Potter…, Harry”, Draco replied with a grin, “You were the best though, as I never did beat you”.
“Yes, well, that wasn’t your doing though was it”? Harry said, as he looked sorrowfully at Draco. “I kept getting the better and faster brooms on the market, which nobody else had. I was practically cheating, in some sense of the word, and I believe that if we were evenly matched, you would have won more”.
“Well, uh, I don’t know what to say”. Draco mumbled.
“You don’t need to, with me that is”. Harry stated. “It’s taken me a while, but now I see how you guys in Slytherin were treated by the rest of us, and for one, I am ashamed for my part in it”.
“You don’t have to….” Draco started, but was cut off by Harry waving his hand.
“No, Draco, it’s true and you know it. I never knew how bad Slytherin house had it at first, and then I let myself be pulled into the harassment, and just made it worse. Pure hate guided me, and it was a hate towards people I didn’t even know and had never met”. Harry said, and shook his head.
“I was fed all this bunk about Slytherins in two days time, by two people, and look how I acted. I didn’t take the time to look into it myself, and see how true it was, so I just went along with it, and placed all the blame and my hate on you all”.
“Harry, it’s all right”. Draco said softly, while looking at Harry like he had never seen him before.
“No, Draco, it’s not all right, and I am ashamed of the way I acted toward you and all the other Slytherin kids”, Harry explained. “You know, there was one time that I remember during a sorting, that when a kid got sorted into Slytherin, I had said that he or she would turn out to be bad, or a dark wizard, just as soon as the hat was lifted from their head.
“When Hagrid come to get me, he confronted my Aunt and Uncle, and showed me a way out of their grip, and I was so happy that I jumped on the opportunity, but was afraid it was all some sort of dream. When he took me to Diagon Alley, it was the happiest day of my life, and I remember meeting you that day, in Madam Malkin’s.
“Here I was, in over-sized and worn out hand-me-down clothes, that most tramps wouldn’t have worn, where a boy my age first spoke to me, and I had no idea what he was talking about most of the time, and I felt like I would never make it in the wizarding world, and I felt so inadequate. I was jealous too, knowing that your family had money, you know, by your clothes and your attitude, so I judged you wrongly that day instead of actually trying to get to know you.
"The only thing that happened to seal the deal was when you spoke about Hagrid, who had just saved me from those horrid muggles, and I couldn’t have that, even though I didn’t know Hagrid that well either”.
“Harry listen, it’s all water under the bridge, and it’s in our past”. Draco explained.
“I wish it were, Draco”, Harry said, “but it’s not, and I want to fix it”.
When Draco started to reply, again, Harry stood and moved over to where Draco was sitting, then held out his hand to the young blond man in front of him. “Hello, my name is Harry Potter”.
Draco took Harry’s hand, and gave it a hearty shake. “I’m Draco Malfoy, and I’m glad to make your acquaintance”.
Both boys were brought out of their thoughts when they heard an old man clear his voice from his chair behind them, and Aberforth spoke. “That’s what I was hoping to see. The fighting’s over, and now we can all get along, but changes must be made, and that was the start”.
“What do you mean by changes”? Harry asked, as he took a seat closer to Draco.
“To our world, Mr. Potter, and drastic ones to boot, will need to be made”. Aberforth commented. “I know you've noticed that I got along with everyone, no matter who they were, when they come to my pub”?
“Well, of course I did, but what are these changes”? Harry asked, and was readying himself for something awful.
“Nothing bad my boy”! Aberforth exclaimed, “No, nothing bad at all. However, I think we ought to take a look at Hogwarts itself as the starting place”.
“What do you mean, old man, as I know you’re up to something”? Draco deadpanned.
“There is one thing that I heard Tom Riddle say, during the battle, that he got partly right and that I agree with, “Aberforth replied, “and that was about doing away with the houses of Hogwarts”.
“What, make them all Slytherin”? Draco scoffed. “Not bloody likely; that would make folks hate us even more”.
“No, my boy, that was the part that Tom got wrong”. Aberforth explained. “There should be NO Hogwarts houses, only Hogwarts students. Either that, or divide the houses up by the years, and make everyone take a turn in all four”.
“Well, that would ruin Quidditch”, Harry disagreed, “as you couldn’t pick teams”.
“Quidditch”! Aberforth snorted. “Who gives a flying Hippogriff’s dick about that, when it means settling the differences in our world, which in fact, start at that ruddy school! Would you rather play a game, or see peace in the world”?
“Well, I imagine that Quidditch could be worked around, maybe using independent teams, and say have six instead of four, for any harpers”. Draco said, while he was hard in thought.
“Yea, and that would get the school more Quidditch time, you know, games to watch, and give the students more to do”. Harry said, and now had a grin on his face.
“Without any houses, the rivalry would be against the teams only, and not the children”. Aberforth explained. “Plus, each team would have to accept members from each age group and each house, if need be, so there could be no ‘house’ rivalry”.
“Who came up with this idea”? Harry asked.
“A very wise and old person” Aberforth deadpanned.
“You”? Draco asked with a smirk.
“No, Mr. Malfoy, it was in fact Helena Ravenclaw. She is ashamed of what her mother’s school has become, and quite frankly, I don’t blame her”. Aberforth explained with a frown. “When I was there and in Gryffindor with my older brother, I was friends with everyone, and that is why they all like me to this day.
“You know, it’s makes me laugh when I think that all those people thought that my brother was so far to the ‘light’ side of things, when he had me buying illegal potions and ingredients at my pub, and for the Orders use. When I say illegal, I mean that the majority were dark in nature”.
“What are you talking about, Aberforth”? Harry asked.
“Why, Harry, you didn’t think that the things the Order got up to were above board, did you”? Aberforth chortled. “There were not only illegal potions used, but dark artifacts too, and some of the spells we used were just as dark as the unforgivables were.
“Then there was the killings”, Aberforth said and Harry’s eyes widened, “that the Order committed, but got by with because they were on the ‘winning’ side”.
“What killings”? Harry hotly replied.
“My dear boy, surely you aren’t so naïve to think that the spells the Order used were stunners and disarming hexes, are you”? As Harry turned redder, Aberforth continued. “You know that Molly Weasley killed Bellatrix Lestrange, and there were several other killings that night, by several other Order members. Not just that night either.
“Child, it’s been this way ever since the Order was started by my brother, and they did what the Ministry wouldn’t do, and kill off folks who were thought to be the worst of the worst, without any trial, and wouldn't check them to see if maybe, just maybe, they could have been under the imperious curse.
“However, they were fighting against foes that would have killed them if they got the chance, so it’s like the old saying, ‘all’s fair in love and war’”.
“That would make them a murderer”! Harry exclaimed.
“No”! Aberforth shot back with a snort. “Boy, self defense don’t make one a murderer, nor does fighting in a war. A murderer is someone like Voldemort, who made up his mind, premeditatedly, to kill another individual, and then did it, whether they were a threat, or not, and he’s murdered plenty.
“Let me take a wild guess here, did my brother tell you that any killing would rip your soul in two”?
“Well, the way he explained it to me, it would”. Harry replied, now feeling uncomfortable.
“That’s goat shite boy, pure goat shite! Murder is the only thing that can do it, not involuntary killing.
“If you’re doing it to save yourself, somebody else, or you’re fighting for your life, or in a war, where it’s kill or be killed, that’s NOT murder, and your soul is still intact. Surely, you didn’t think that everyone came out of this war with torn souls did you”?
“Well, that’s not…, that doesn’t explain…, I don’t know”. Harry spluttered, and rubbed his brow.
“Potter", Aberforth explained, "if you had struck down Voldemort with the killing curse, that morning of the last battle, you still wouldn’t have torn your soul, as you were protecting everyone around you from a lunatic and a killer.
“He would have killed everyone there, including you, in stone cold murder if he could have made an escape. Tom Riddle had gone as bad as you can become, and there was no saving him. He had cursed himself, time and again, trying to gain power, using rituals and potions which made him more unhinged each time, until he was truly a monster.
“Tom Riddle was the same as a mangy dog who had caught rabies, and had to be put down before he spread the disease and killed us all”.
“What about the other Death Eaters”? Harry asked, and wondered about their mental state.
“Well, the inner circle was mostly thugs, murderers, rapists, and thieves. That is, except two, and those were Severus Snape, and Lucius Malfoy”. Aberforth explained, and upon Draco’s nod, went ahead. “Severus was there over his potions ability and knowledge of the dark arts, while Lucius was there over his money and his political connections.
“Don’t get me wrong, Lucius knew about the dark arts too, but he would rather use other means, than murder, to obtain his goals, as he still had some scruples. Lucius was for the education of the children in the old ways, and for the children as a whole, which is what got him involved more than anything, and because the Slytherin children were treated like they were, and so was Severus, which is why they turned the way they did.
“You may not know it, Harry, but the Malfoy family has been looking out for you, somewhat, since you came into our world”.
“What are you talking about, Aberforth, Lucius despises me”! Harry exclaimed.
“No, Harry, he despised what he was afraid you were becoming, a tool of my brothers. Who do you think sent that house elf, Dobby, to come to Hogwarts and to keep you away from what was going to happen? It had to be one of the elf’s master’s to release him to do it, and upon somebody’s orders”!
Harry thought about this, and an old memory came to him from the first of his second year at Hogwarts.
“We were sitting in that flying car of Arthur’s”, Harry explained, “when the twins and Ron came to get me from my Aunt’s home, during my second year, and was talking about why Dobby had showed up. One of the twins, I forget which, either Fred or George, said that the elf’s master’s would have had to have sent him, because he couldn’t have left the home if they didn’t allow it (1).
“Yes, that would have been mother and I”, Draco explained, “as father wouldn’t in order to keep it hid. It was all started over something the headmaster had done, and where he was having our manor raided every time we turned around. Father was going to get even with both Dumbledore and Arthur Weasley, who was leading the raids with glee, and father thought it would look good for the Weasley’s to be caught with a dark artifact, like we were being accused of having, which we did own a few of, like a good portion of the other pureblood families did”.
“What are you talking about, Draco”? Harry asked.
“Well, do you remember our first Christmas at the castle”? Draco asked, and Harry nodded. “Headmaster Dumbledore destroyed a time honored tradition of holding a wizarding play for Yule, and replaced it with a muggle one for Christmas. Well I, along with several other students from the other houses complained to our parents, and Dumbledore was called upon the carpet by the Board of Governors. My father was leading the arse chewing he got, so to get even, and since Dumbledore was the Chief Warlock, and since Weasley was in a branch of the MLE, he had Weasley to raid our manor five times (2)”.
“I remember that, “Harry said, “and I think I was the cause of one of them over overhearing you bragging about them not finding anything, and saying that the artifacts were hidden under the floor in the study”.
“Well, they were, but the aurors weren’t smart enough to find them, and my father used his connections at the ministry to finally quell what was happening, plus we sold off what we had at Borgin & Burke’s”. Draco explained. “Then, father slipped that dark journal to Weasley’s daughter, and we see what happened from there. Father didn’t know what it was, just that it was dark and that Voldemort had left it there, so he wanted rid of it, and it would be the perfect thing to use for revenge.
“You see, Harry, Father had washed his hands of the Dark Lord after your parents were murdered, and especially when he killed a pregnant witch and went after a child. Father said he was disgusted with him, when the Dark Lord finally did return”.
"What? Mum was pregnant"? Harry shouted, and Draco solemnly nodded.
"I'll help you look into that, as nobody knows much about it." Draco explained, "I think she was about six months along".
"Thanks," Harry muttered with his eyes burning, "I really do appreciate it. Anyhow", Harry cleared his throat, "I do think that Lucius wished he was rid of Voldemort, though.
“When Voldemort called back the Death Eaters, that night at Little Hangleton, he said your father never tried to find him”. Harry said. “I also don’t blame Lucius for showing up there, as I heard what he did to Karkaroff over him running. He would have not only killed Lucius, but you and your mother as well, to make an example”.
“After that”, Aberforth broke in, “Lucius showed up at the Department of Mysteries over Voldemort wanting the prophesy, and because he had picked Bellatrix to lead the break-in. Lucius knew that she would kill everyone that showed up, and take you back to her lord. Voldemort had also sent about every thug he had along, so Lucius talked Voldemort into making him the leader of the group, to keep you children, who he knew would show up, alive”.
“Yea,” Harry solemnly said, “and look where that got him and his family too. Lucius did, though, make Bellatrix stop trying to curse us when I first retrieved that memory of the prophecy, and they showed themselves”.
“It did cause us trouble, but we survived it, Harry, and it’s all over with now. He’d dead and gone, and now we’re free, even Father”. Draco said.
“I’ll never forget your mother saving me, Draco, nor you for not identifying me at your home, or when you tried to hold back Crabbe and Goyle in the room of requirement”. Harry remarked, and gave the blond a small grin.
“Thanks Harry, that means more to me than you could ever know”! Draco said, and was startled when Aberforth cleared his throat.
“All right you two, let’s go get some supper. I’m downright starved”! Aberforth exclaimed, as he stood and made his way toward the dining room.
Author’s notes:
(1) In the COS, the below conversation about Dobby happens, while in the car, fleeing the Dursleys:
"I don't think he could," said Harry. "I told you, every time he got close to letting something slip; he started banging his head against the wall."
He saw Fred and George look at each other. "What, you think he was lying to me?" said Harry.
"Well," said Fred, "put it this way - house-elves have got powerful magic of their own, but they can't usually use it without their master's permission. I reckon old Dobby was sent to stop you coming back to Hogwarts. Someone's idea of a joke. Can you think of anyone at school with a grudge against you?"
"Yes," said Harry and Ron together, instantly.
"Draco Malfoy," Harry explained. "He hates me."
"Draco Malfoy?" said George, turning around. "Not Lucius Malfoy's son?"
"Must be, it's not a very common name, is it?" said Harry.
(2) The story of the raids, and Dumbledore’s involvement, is in the front of the book, “The Tales of Beedle the Bard”. It was supposed to be in Dumbledore’s own handwriting, like a preface in the book.
From the COS book:
"Guess who I saw in Borgin and Burkes?" Harry asked Ron and Hermione as they climbed the Gringotts steps. "Malfoy and his father."
"Did Lucius Malfoy buy anything?" said Mr. Weasley sharply behind them.
"No, he was selling….”
"So he's worried," said Mr. Weasley with grim satisfaction. "Oh, I'd love to get Lucius Malfoy for something ......”
"You be careful, Arthur," said Mrs. Weasley sharply, as they were bowed into the bank by a goblin at the door. "That family's trouble. Don't go biting off more than you can chew -"
"So you don't think I'm a match for Lucius Malfoy?" said Mr. Weasley indignantly, but he was distracted almost at once by the sight of Hermione's parents, who were standing nervously at the counter that ran all along the great marble hall, waiting for Hermione to introduce them.
