CHAPTER EIGHT
Life with Severus was close to perfect. He was an attentive husband and though often busy with the Foundation, he always made a point to call and tell me he loved me. This morning I had awoken to, "Save your love for me, my darling, save your love," blasting out of the answer machine. I giggled at the sweetness of his voice, turned on my side and found the note he had left on the pillow.
Gone to the gala, be back around 6pm, I love you. xx
I smiled, got out of bed and got ready. I had wanted to accompany him to the gala but one of my major clients could only meet me today. I hoped that we would be able to wrap things up quickly and I'd have a little time to pop in at the gala before it ended. Grabbing my car keys I headed to the garage, got in the car and made my way down the drive. After making sure the way was clear I pulled out onto the peaceful country lane and headed towards the city. My fingers searched the compartment in the middle. Finding the circular disc, I glanced down for a moment and grabbed the cd. Mechanical People, this would do. I slipped the disc into the player and pressed the play button. The music had just started when a horn blast and a screech of wheels caused me to look up. Frantically, I swerved and stepped on the brakes as my car ran off the side and careened towards a large pine.
My door flew open and a familiar voice said, "Don't move, an ambulance is on it's way." He took my hand. "I'll be right back. I'm just going to get a blanket." His feet crunched on the shattered glass as he climbed up the embankment. "Severus, there's been an accident," I heard him say as my eyes drifted out of focus.
When I awoke I was in a bright white room with Severus standing by my bed. I had never been so relieved to see him as I was just then. I tried to move but I couldn't make my body work. I wanted to tell him I loved him and it was alright but the look of fear on his face frightened me. "Severus," I said weakly.
He grabbed my hand and lay his head next to mine. "Lily," he said as tears streaked down his face.
James stood near him. He was white faced and distraught. "I'm sorry, Severus. I didn't see her," he pleaded, placing one trembling hand on his shoulder before turning and walking away. Just then a doctor came in and crossed to the bed. He checked the wires and machines, made a few notes on the clipboard and shook his head.
Severus' head swivelled back and forth between us several times before he turned and pulling out his phone began dialling frantically as he headed out into the corridor. "Tom," I heard him say in a strangled voice as the door swung shut. The doctor "Dumbledore" I read off his white coat, left my bedside and went to him.
"I'm sorry, there is nothing we can do," he apologized, shaking his head. "She doesn't have long."
I could see Severus, crumbling as he came back in. "I love you," he said burying his face into my hair, tears pouring down his cheeks as he held my hand. It was strange, I knew he was right beside me but it felt as though he were moving away from me at speed. My eyes fluttered and a strange gurgling noise escaped my throat. The last sound I heard was a soul being wrenched apart as he fell to his knees.
Severus sat there on the floor rocking back and forth, his hands clenched to the side of his head. "Lily," he repeated over and over again. His heart torn apart, shattered. Dead! How could she be dead? He let out a wail of despair and crumbled, writhing in pain as he went screaming into the dark.
In the moments of clarity he could hear laughing as ice cold fingers dug into his head. "Look at what love has gotten you, Severus," a cold voice echoed through his mind.
A wild cackle wrapped around the cold voice, "My Lord, I want to play," she said with excitement tingeing every word.
Severus blinked and shuffled along the ward, guided by the healer. As he sat back on the bed she said, "Come on Severus, time for your pills." Automatically he raised his hand and took the pills that were placed before him. The room darkened once more, then a blinding light filled him.
I was running late. Great!...
As the doors of the ward swung open, the healer rushed forward.
"Has there been any change?" Albus asked, peering over the rim of his glasses at the man who sat on the bed mumbling to himself.
"I'm sorry Albus. I fear he is too far gone. There may be nothing we can do. The tablets just aren't working and we've tried everything else." The healer looked over her shoulder and shook her head. "I don't know who is worse, him or the Longbottoms."
Albus lay a slender hand on her arm. "Perhaps this time I can reach him." He gave her a crooked smile. "Bring me a calming draft please, Cyril."
"As you wish Albus." Nodding curtly, she hurried out the room and along the corridor. When she returned she found Albus sitting on the visitors chair, opposite Severus who was rocking back and forth muttering something that sounded like "Lily" from under his breath.
"Thank you Cyril," Albus said as he took the calming draft and uncorked it. Placing it in Severus hand, he guided it up to his mouth and emptied it. He waited a few seconds, letting the potion take effect before sitting back down. As Severus began to calm, Albus locked eyes and bore into him.
He stood in the corridor and watched as Lily Potter hurried along it and frantically pushed the elevator button. "Come on," he heard her say, while foot tapping away. When the doors opened he slid in behind her. He eyed the young girl he had known and watch grow up into the brave woman who stood before him. She was different. Muggle by the look of things. She certainly didn't dress like a witch. When the elevator jolted to a stop, Severus came in. He was well groomed, handsome even. Not the shadow of the man who sat opposite him in the hospital ward. He stepped forward, pinning Lily and eyed her hungrily. There could be no denying his want for the woman, just as there had been none when he had followed her around at school. He had been a love struck teen then, not the young man who had joined the Dark Lord and the Death Eaters. The scene changed and he found himself inside an office building.
Watching from a distance, he let the scenes unfold, waiting till he could once again try and reach him. He knew it was pointless to try when he was so focused on Lily, well the Lily he believed to be alive. When finally the time came, Albus grasped hold of Severus' hands and bore harder, projecting himself deeper into Severus mind.
"Severus listen to me," he said in a calm voice. "This is not real. Look at her, Severus. Is she the witch you fell in love with?"
"Dead! She, she, she..." Severus began rocking back and forth.
"Severus Snape!" Albus bellowed. He knew he was losing him. Boring as hard as he could, he tried again. "Wake up Severus. This is not real. She is not Lily. Look at her! She is NOT REAL!" As the darkness surrounded them Albus fell forward.
Cyril rushed forward. "Albus?" she inquired fretfully as she helped him back onto his seat.
"I'm alright Cyril. Just a little weak." Albus blinked up at her and gave his best impression of a crooked grin.
"You know you are not fooling anyone, Albus!" she said flitting away to get some chocolate.
Lowering his glasses, Albus peered at Severus. He was sure he had reached him this time but Severus didn't move. He just sat there, glazed over. "Lily," he mumbled suddenly, then slumped backwards. Albus clapped his hands together. He'd done it. Finally after months of trying he had done the impossible. Severus was back in the land of the living.
Cyril stopped dead as she entered the room and saw Severus slumped over his bed with a jubilant Albus dancing beside him. "You did it?" she squealed.
"Ha, ha, yes! Cyril, finally we will have the answers." Albus rushed over to her and swung her around. "I'll need to take him with me. Madam Pomfrey will administer to his needs. I think it best if he is in my custody, don't you?" He beamed down at her.
"Of course, but do not rush him Albus. His mind has been through a great ordeal, it may take some time to recover fully."
Albus nodded and crossed over to the bed. With one hand firmly grasping Severus, he thought of his quarters at Hogwarts and apparated them away.
