A/N: Hello again, my readers! Thank you to those who have reviewed. Keep them coming! Again, thank you so much to my lovely beta. Jags, you are so awesome for putting up with my neurotic tendencies. Some light M Solo this chapter. Very, very light. But things will eventually heat up.
Chapter 8
“I said I did it to protect you. They were coming after you. They knew you were working for the Order. Draco stepped up and said that death was too good for you, and one of the adults agreed with him. They started the spell and it hit me.” Once he started explaining, the words just poured out. He couldn't stop them. Hell, he wasn't even sure he wanted to. Then Snape's hands were holding his head still and his soul was being pierced by those black depths that Snape used for eyes.
“Calm down, boy. Breathe. Start at the beginning,” Snape instructed, carefully holding Harry's head still and watching his eyes very closely. Harry took a few deep breaths and met Snape's gaze unflinchingly.
“Draco came to me and told me there was something I would want to see in the Forbidden Forest and he'd show me where to look after dark. I went with him to a clearing and hid behind a tree. Some Deatheaters showed up and they started talking about how you were a traitor and that something had to be done about you. Draco convinced them not to kill you. There was an older man, I guess he was the leader of the ones that were there, and he agreed that you should be taught a lesson. He's the one who cast the spell. I never saw his face, but I'd know his voice if I heard it again. It hurt. It hurt a lot. He told me that if I wanted it to be over, all I had to do was to tell him to go after you instead. I let him finish the spell because I didn't want you getting hurt,” Harry explained softly.
Convinced that the boy was telling the truth, Snape let go of him and straightened. It was worse than he thought. He had been compromised months ago. But why wasn't he dead? Why hadn't Voldemort come after him, or, at the very least, summoned him? Snape knew that, if he had been summoned before learning that he had been compromised, he would have gone, if for no other reason than to preserve his cover. And Harry was describing the Martyr's Bond. Not exactly the worst of the forbidden Bonding spells, but not the easiest to be rid of, either. Merlin's beard, why hadn't the boy said something?
“How did you escape with your life? Surely they saw your face...” Snape asked, choosing to change the subject, rather than ask what he was actually dying to know.
“Draco said they couldn't tell it was me. I don't know how he kept it from them, I didn't cast anything, or take anything,” Harry answered, quickly adding the second part to stave off questions about polyjuice potions. Snape sat down hard on the end of the bed.
“Why would you endure that pain when it would have been so easy to avoid it?” he asked quietly. More than part of him was afraid of the answer, but he had to know.
“Because, I-” Harry faltered, but Snape didn't push him. “I never thought about avoiding it. It was something I had to do to protect you. So I did it.”
Snape nodded slowly. “I need to think. And I need you to put your shirt on when you can. No one else can know about this, not even the headmaster, do you understand?”
“Yeah...” Harry replied slowly. Snape knew that he probably didn't understand the reasons for the secrecy, but hoped that he would at least honor the request.
“If you find yourself with any questions, come to me,” Snape instructed as he moved back to his own bed. He lay down and closed his eyes, even though he knew that there was no chance for him to find sleep. He calmed his breathing and focused on appearing asleep. He tried to think, but soon was completely distracted by the soft sound of skin moving on skin as Harry tried to calm his mark enough to cover it again. He told himself that he was being polite by giving Harry privacy by pretending to sleep, but he couldn't help but wonder what the boy was using for inspiration. The possibilities were enough to spark some interest in certain parts of Snape's own anatomy and made him glad he was feigning sleep.
