"I'm worried about him Minerva." Hermione said, setting her untouched cup of tea back on the table. "He's drinking too much and he's taken all the dreamless sleep potions in our quarters and from his storeroom."
"Has he spoken to you yet?"
"No." Hermione sighed, staring down at her hands in her lap. "Not one word. He leaves my potions assignments tacked to the door to the dungeons."
"Oh Severus. " The Headmistress shook her head sadly and took a sip of her tea. "He behaved much the same way when Olie passed. Drinking too much, taking too many mind and emotion numbing potions. Poor boy can't face the emotions he's feeling so he tries to drown them out with Old Ogden's.
"What about when Lily died?"
Taking another sip of her tea, Minerva seemed to ponder the question, before she answered. "He was clearly upset, but he had Olie to comfort him. Now he's…."
"All alone." Hermione whispered.
Hermione stood in front of the dungeon door, biting her bottom lip in confusion. She had become so accustomed to finding her daily instructions tacked there; she wasn't quite sure how to react to its sudden emptiness. She glanced around on the floor, thinking maybe they had fallen off. When she couldn't find anything, she pushed through the heavy door and made her way to Potions lab.
Professor Snape moved about the room, his black robes billowing out behind him. She watched as he placed ingredients at her work station.
"This is a potion you have never brewed before." His baritone was voice flat and emotionless, but it still sent shivers down her spine. "We will brew the first batch together as there is no margin for error. I suggest you pay close attention. There is no need to speak."
She nodded her head and tried to catch his eye, turning his head away he refused to look at her. "We shall begin."
He paced in front of her workstation, reciting ingredients and brewing instructions. Hermione listened intently and followed his every direction.
"Stir twelve times counter clockwise, the potions should be a silver blue color." Glancing into the caldron, he confirmed the potions success. "Perfectly brewed Ms. Granger. I will leave you to continue. I trust you can complete this on your own." He turned his back on her and began to walk up the aisle.
"Professor?" She called out to his retreating back. He stopped walking, but did not turn to face her. "Professor McGonagall told me about Olie and I just wanted to say how sorry I am."
He turned slowly and looked directly at her. She flinched slightly at the tired worn look on his face and the emptiness in his eyes. "Once again Ms. Granger you demonstrate your propensity to romanticize a situation. Olie…." His voice cracked when he said her name. Clearing his throat, he spoke again. "Olie was merely my childhood pet, nothing more, nothing less. Do not make more of it than it was." He turned abruptly and left the dungeon, the door slamming behind him.
"You had no right to tell her about Olie."
"She had a right to know why you were so upset and why your were behaving so irrationally."
Severus Snape stood by the window in the Headmistress' office, staring down at the lake.
"It wasn't your place to tell her."
"No." Minerva agreed. "It was yours. But I knew you weren't going to do it."
He snorted, but said nothing.
"Oh Severus, when will you allow yourself to be happy?"
When he didn't respond she continued. "I have known you since you were a little boy and I know how hard your life has been. If there is any one person on this planet who deserves love and happiness, it's you. You have earned it. That girl loves you. Let her. Let yourself be loved. You might like it."
Professor Snape stood up straight and squared his shoulders, turning on his heel he stalked towards the door of the Headmistress' office. "Have I ever told you that I find you just as irritating, annoying and meddlesome as your predecessor?" His baritone voice was rich and silky.
"No. You haven't. But I will certainly take that as a compliment."
Severus bowed slightly at the waist and turned towards the door.
"Oh and Severus?"
He turned to face her desk.
"I could only tell her about Olie. You can show her. Good day Severus."
