Chapter Eight: Meanwhile...
Hogwarts was better than anything James Potter could have imagined. He was enjoying his lessons, his new friends and everything about it. He had been sorted into Gryffindor almost immediately, and had been so pleased he couldn't wait to tell his Dad...he knew Harry would be proud of him. Teddy certainly was as he made room for him on the bench. He was excited about meeting his dorm mates and beginning school, and the excitement continued until a few weeks in.
He was at breakfast, laughing with his new friends when the owl post arrived. James received a copy of the Daily Prophet, which was odd considering he never had any reason to take it. He paid the Owl, having a feeling it was important, he heard some soft gasps. People were staring at him, but not in the same way they had when he had first arrived, full of awe and respect...now their gazes were filled with suspicion and fear. When his eyes moved down to the paper they widened. A photograph of his father was staring back at him, beneath a bold headline accusing him of having tried to murder the minister for magic. "No." He muttered, his eyes scanning the table, only a few students took the Prophet so not everyone was aware of what had happened, his gaze landed on Teddy who was laughing uproariously with his friends. He stood, his hands shaking slightly as he moved towards Teddy, he shook his shoulder making him pause mid sentence and look up at him. "T-Ted...can we...go somewhere to talk?" He whispered frantically.
"Sure..." Teddy stood, apologising to his friends as he followed the obviously terrified first year. When they found a private corner to talk James shoved the paper at him. He gazed down at the headline and gasped. "Shit." He muttered. "This...this is a lie...it has to be..." He grabbed the paper off of the boy and began reading the article. "The Minister for Magic is in a coma...Harry Potter suspected of involvement with attempted murder...has been seen practising Dark Arts..." he chewed his lip, gazing down at the picture of his Godfather, he looked grumpy, as he always did when someone tried to photograph him. Those kind green eyes flashed into his head and Teddy couldn't believe the words written in the paper any more than he could believe that James would try and murder a fellow student. It was impossible! The man was so kind, forgiving, he had taken such a huge role in his life that he acted as a father figure and important role model. "No, it's all lies. James, don't believe any of it." He said firmly.
"B-But it says that they're after him! They're after Dad! Why would they do that if he was i-innocent...?"
Teddy sighed and sank down the wall, James joined him. "I'm not sure if you've heard of this story or not, but your Dad told me it a while back..." He gazed at students as they began making their way to classes. "When your father was thirteen a man called Sirius Black escaped Azkaban, Harry was told only that he had been responsible for the murder of several Muggles and that he was a Death Eater...and so there was a high possibility that he would come after Harry." He embarked on the tale, explaining that Sirius was actually innocent of the crimes he had been accused of, how he had reconciled things with Harry and how the only proof of his innocence had escaped. "My father...turned into a wolf at the wrong moment allowing Pettigrew to turn back into a rat and escape...leaving Sirius to run from the ministry. He was hunted down, even being blamed for several mass break outs of Azkaban in later years. Basically...don't believe in everything the Ministry or the Prophet tell you, James, trust your instincts..." He handed the paper back to the boy and stood, smiling at him. "It'll be alright, Harry'll be proven innocent when the Minister wakes up, Kingsley won't let him go to prison."
James swallowed nervously and allowed Teddy to pull him to his feet. Suddenly they heard a voice.
"Mr. Lupin...?" Teddy turned to see Headmistress McGonagall standing before him, she looked as stern as ever but he could see the worry in her eyes as she gazed at them both. "I would like to see you in my office...we have...visitors. And Mr. Potter, please go to class." She drew close and put a kindly hand on James's shoulder. "Your father is innocent, I am sure of it. Now come, you mustn't let your grades slip." She chivvied him away.
Teddy followed the Headmistress up to her office, feeling nervous. The door opened and he followed the woman inside, the office was nice, filled with odd instruments that glittered in the light coming through a window. Portraits of all the old headmasters and Headmistresses lined the walls, one of which sat above McGonagall's chair, she looked up at it for a moment before turning and facing the room. "Before they arrive I wish you to understand that we are doing all we can to fight your case, Mr. Lupin. We are...determined that we protect every student of this school, no matter what."
"What's happening, Professor?" Teddy asked.
Before she could answer there were several sharp knocks on the door and the room was filled with people. One man, Teddy recognised as Brock, a man who had attended his hearing, his eyes narrowed. "Teddy Lupin, you are hereby suspended from school pending investigation into your association with the traitor and Murderer Harry James Potter."
"I...what?" Teddy was completely lost. "This is ridiculous! Harry's innocent! You can't..."
"Anything you have to say, Mr. Lupin, will be heard in court on the fifth of October." Brock looked positively gleeful as he watched Teddy open and close his mouth repeatedly, unable to say anything. "For now you will be sent home and placed under house arrest, Dementors will be stationed outside your home until further notice. Thank you for your time."
"B-But I..." Teddy turned to McGonnagall who looked furious, her mouth was set in a taught line, her greying hair seemed to crackle with her emotion. "P-Professor...please..." he muttered.
"Lupin has done nothing to warrant such measures, Mr. Brock! How dare you come into my school and order us around as if..."
"Dear Woman, this boy has connections to some rather serious Dark Magic. Why, he himself is the spawn of a Werewolf! His grandmother is a member of a violent and dangerous family, whose cousin was a well known Murderer! If he remains in school he will become a threat to all the children here! We cannot allow this to continue. We have arranged all the governors' signatures except for a few..." His face darkened slightly.
"I presume you mean that Longbottom refused to sign?"
"Yes, madam, but we assure you every other member of the Governors have agreed that this is the best course of action."
Teddy shook his head, trying to make sure this wasn't all a horrible nightmare. "My mother and her mother were disinherited from the Black Family...they had no connection to it at all! Sirius Black was Innocent! Y-You can't blame me for my heritage! This is...horrible..."
"Dear boy, you do realise that this goes further? You are close to your Godfather, are you not?" before Teddy could respond Brock continued. "Harry Potter is a dangerous criminal and potentially a threat to the wizarding world, your connection to the man has you under more suspicion than ever. He was probably responsible for his wife's murder and the attempt upon the minister himself."
"No!" teddy said loudly feeling anger flood him. "You're lying! Harry would never, ever hurt Ginny! They loved each other! He had kids with her! Are you all completely stupid?"
"Lupin, be quiet." McGonagall said sharply. "You are making the situation worse."
Teddy opened his mouth to retort furiously but someone grabbed his arm in a vice like grip. "I would suggest, boy, that you keep your opinions to yourself. Now, it's time we remove you from the school...your luggage will follow." Brock marched him forcefully from the room, McGonagall following. He was dragged through the busy hall ways, where everyone turned to stare as he tried to free his arm.
"Get off of me, you old fart!" He said yanking his arm free. "I can walk on my own." He held his head up high and walked forward, unable to erase the dread in his gut. As they reached the double doors in the entrance hall he was halted, Brock held out his hand.
"Your wand, Mr. Lupin." He said in a loud, clear voice.
Teddy's fingers found the handle of his wand and he held it tightly. "What for?" He asked.
"We cannot risk having you escape, I am sure your loving Godfather has taught you spells which the Ministry consider inappropriate for such young children."
"You're going to break it...aren't you?" Teddy replied, eyeing the ministry members warily.
"Not until your fate has been decided by the Wizengamot. Now, hand it over..."
Teddy glanced at his Headmistress who nodded once, he raised his hand allowing his wand to fall from his fingers into Brock's waiting palm. Once the familiar feeling of it left his hand he felt more vulnerable than he had ever done before, he hated the feeling but let nothing show on his face. His hair changed colour rapidly as emotions flowed through him before settling on black. His eyes darkened until they turned dark grey and he sighed heavily. "Fine, let's get this over with, shall we?" He muttered before striding past the shocked onlookers and out into the grounds.
James watched his friend stride out the doors, he was impressed at his seeming confidence. Teddy walked with a straight back, eyes straight ahead as if he was a prince being escorted to his castle rather than a fourteen year old boy who was potentially walking to his doom. The Ministry's Auror's looked slightly confused at not having to drag him away, they glanced at Brock who waved them on. And once they were gone, James realised he was alone. He had very few friends as it was, being so early in the year, and now the only person who would believe his father was innocent was gone. He fell back against a wall and closed his eyes, gritting his teeth. "Dad..." he whispered. "Please come back..."
Andromeda watched her grandson pace, it was a rather annoying habit but she let it slide, considering the poor boys predicament she could hardly blame him. The effect of the Dementors was slowly seeping through the walls where they glided around the house, preventing any visitors or any chance she may have had to spirit the boy away. "Teddy, sit down, please." She said softly.
The boy looked at her, pain in his eyes before flopping gracelessly into a chair. She almost smiled as she saw her daughter doing the exact same thing what seemed like centuries ago. "This is it, isn't it?" He said suddenly, huffing dramatically. "They're going to send me to Azkaban...all because of...because of some trumped up charges!" he slammed his fists against the arms of the chair and glared into the fire, the flames did little to dispel the chill emanating from outside. "Gran, what are we going to do?" He finally looked at her, a desperation in his eyes that felt like a physical wound to Andromeda.
"There is very little we can do at the moment, Teddy...be patient. I am sure that your Godfather is innocent of his crimes and he will find a way to prove it, his friends will be helping. Don't worry..." As she spoke she knew her words were empty, no one had even heard from Harry since his sudden disappearance after seeing his son off at Kings cross.
Teddy sighed, running fingers through hair that kept changing colour as if he'd lost control over his powers. "I hope so..." he said softly.
The days were terrible for James, as the news spread around Hogwarts that Harry potter was wanted for crimes against the establishment he was subjected to cruel words, taunts from the shadows and sometimes outright attacks. It wasn't just the other houses, his own even turned against him, saying that his father was evil and insane. He took to walking through the corridors with his head down, having been abandoned by his friends. No matter how many times he tried to tell them that it wasn't true no one would believe him, they said that he was going to end up bad as well. Only the teachers seemed to be on his side, Professor Longbottom was particularly sympathetic, treating James with a kindness that made him feel only a little bit better. The man insisted that Harry was innocent, defending Harry's honour against the whispers of hatred that had filled the school. James began to wish he had never left, he began to wish he was at home with his father...but his father hadn't been seen since he had supposedly attacked Ron and Hermione and escaped. That news seemed odd to James, he couldn't work out why Harry would attack his best friends...it was totally out of character but there were too many witnesses to deny it. Hermione was only stunned and came away without a scratch and Ron only had a few bruises. Both agreed that it had been Harry who had attacked them, following the Ministry's line. However, James was sure there was something he was missing, something vital...something that would perhaps save his father from a life-long sentence in Azkaban.
