AN: Wow! I love your reviews it makes me an extremely happy author, I always appreciate constructive criticism, the reason I pointed out I was Dyslexic is because too many times have I been thought of as stupid and people have avoided reading my stories because of my difficulties, I am so happy this has not put you off. :) I hope you enjoy this next chapter, I am trying to get my Marauders to grow up as quickly as possible, but their childhood is important to the rest of the story and I don’t want to leave it out. (Just so you know I put in the ball thing with the girls to emphasise the fact that they are exploring themselves and their sexuality in innocent ways, so bear with me, not many children know they’re gay right off the bat. :p)
Chapter Seven: Revelationes (Revelations)
Halloween arrived and brought with it bitterly cold winds and driving rain, but it didn’t affect Sirius and his friends, they were immune to it with the secret knowledge that they were going to attempt to become the youngest Animagi in existence. Remus was, at first, subdued after the outburst of emotion the evening James and Sirius had explained their plan but, as he grew used to the idea, he came out of himself until he returned to normal.
Halloween gave James and Sirius more reason to spend time in the library, they settled down in their lessons in an attempt to avoid having points removed or getting detentions, by unspoken consent they began researching in preparation for a huge, school-wide, prank. Remus watched them with trepidation, he made sure they were working on something that wouldn’t cause anyone any physical harm to themselves or others. He hovered over them, reading books over their shoulders and making the odd suggestion, sometimes surprising his friends with his audacity.
Peter followed them around as usual, sticking to James like glue, he encouraged James with anything he suggested but earned himself nothing but scorn from Sirius for being what he deemed ‘a weak Infiri who can only follow the crowd and has no brain of his own’.
One evening, two days before the prank, Sirius sat before the fire, he gave voice to a huge yawn and stretched languidly, people looked up and watched him for a while before returning to whatever they had been doing, Sirius ignored them. Remus shook his head slowly. “You have no idea of the effect you have on others, do you?” He muttered as he crossed out a mistake on James’ potions essay, having lost a bet with him, he was forced to look over all his homework for a week.
“What effect?” Sirius asked, pushing his hair from his eyes in one smoothly elegant movement.
Remus chuckled. “You may be young Sirius but you’ve certainly captured your fair share of attention from half the student body.”
Sirius raised an eyebrow. “Oh really? And how do you know this?”
Remus shrugged. “Lily Evans keeps complaining that all she hears in the bathroom is gossip about the mysterious Sirius Black, groups of girls from our year and the first keep admiring you from a distance, sighing whenever you make any movement.”
Sirius scoffed in disbelief. “I doubt that, Remus. I’m not...”
James cut him off with an irritable frown. “He’s right, Siri. Out of all of us you are the most attractive, and the majority of the boys hate you for it, the girls watch you in the hopes that you’ll notice them. I hate it...They keep coming up to me to ask if your single.” He pouted irritably.
“And what do you tell them?” Sirius asked warily.
“That you may look attractive on the surface, but you’re an arse and you have warts on your bum.” James smirked. “Everyone has to have some flaws, Siri, if I have to make yours up so be it.”
Sirius bared his teeth in irritation, in much the same way a dog would warn off another. “You bastard.” He growled. “That’s not fair...”
James chuckled. “All’s fair in love and war, Siri. You can’t hog all the girls in Hogwarts you know.” His tone was light hearted and jovial but Sirius went quiet and turned his head to gaze into the fire.
“Talking of girls...” Peter said quietly, he fiddled with his quill. “Who are you three taking to the Halloween dance?”
James grunted and sank low in his seat, a sulky frown marring his brow. “I haven’t asked anyone.”
“Really?! But the dance is two days away.” Peter exclaimed.
“Who are you taking then Mr. Confident?” James snapped nastily, Peter flushed and looked down at his homework.
“N-No one...” He mumbled, somewhat incoherently. From beside the fire Sirius chuckled, earning himself a glare from Peter and Remus, James simply yawned.
“Typical...well, if it’s true I’m so bloody attractive then let’s put it to the test.” Sirius stood and, under the gaze of his friends looked around the common room. There was a pretty girl from his year sitting in the corner with a small group of her friends, they had chatted once or twice and she seemed reasonably nice. Sirius marched over to her and smiled, she flushed as he drew closer and stopped before her. “Excuse me, Cora, I was wandering if you would consent to go to the Halloween dance with me?”
Her face turned red and she smiled, “Of course, I would love to.” She said and Sirius returned her smile.
“Excellent, meet here at seven then.”
“I’ll be waiting.” She turned back to her friends as Sirius walked away feeling pleased with himself, they burst into raucous giggles behind his back as Sirius plonked himself back into the seat. “Huh, so it’s true...I am handsome.” His smirk told them all he knew exactly what he looked like, Remus swore under his breath as he continued working on James’ essay.
James looked about, he too had yet to secure a date, he had been much too preoccupied with their latest prank to pay it any mind, but now that Sirius had a girl to go with he felt slightly bereft. His eyes alighted on a shadowy area where a small table sat by the side of the notice board. Sat there, leaning over a long peice of parchment was a girl with a fall of thick red hair, something about the way she had her head tipped to the side so the light caught her face and bathed it in its gentle golden glow made James’ insides squirm pleasantly, he licked his lips and stood, startling his friends. Sirius’ head went up like a hunting dog, he watched James walk over to Lily Evans and began speaking quietly to her, hot fury filled him until it scorched his insides. He realised that, while he had a date, he didn’t want James to have one too...a thought that confused him mightily. He pushed his random surge of emotion aside and watched the exchange.
“Miss Evans, I was wandering if you would like to go to the Halloween ball with me?” James asked, feeling a swooping sensation in his gut as she lifted those jade eyes to his.
She considered him for a full minute in utter silence until finally bobbing her head. “My original date can’t make it, due to food poisoning, so yes, I will.”
James’ eyes widened in shock before he felt a happy grin suffuse his face. “You won’t regret this.” He said and winked as he walked off; Lily watched him go and rolled her eyes.

Sirius lay in his bed that night and tried to banish thoughts of James, and failed miserably. He rolled onto his side so he had an excellent view of James’ bed, he could see him lying there, half out of his duvet with one arm dangling so his knuckles brushed the floor and his mouth hanging open. He couldn’t help the smile that curled his lips, he thought that he was being stupid, Lily would never replace him at James’ side, he was worrying over nothing.
With that comforting thought he fell into a deep sleep.

An hour before the Ball began Sirius was dressing in the dorms, he was alone as he had left before the others. He dug out his dress robes and slipped them over his head after washing and drying his hair with a spell. He gazed at his reflection in the mirror and picked up a ribbon from his bedside table and tied his hair back in a loose tail that hung down his back, he turned to the side and smoothed down his robes, using his wand and a spell his mother had taught him to remove the crinkles. His robes were double layered, the bottom layer consisting of soft satin in a stunning peacock blue, the top layer was as black as midnight. The back was tightened using a series of intricate knots in silver cord, so it enhanced his waist. His dagged sleeves were also double layered, the first layer of the same blue material as the rest that tapered at his wrists, the top layer was cut so that it fell open in the half-bell shape to reveal the underneath in all its splendour. His robes were his favourite, he had an enamelled broach in the shape of a hummingbird in flight, its feathers the colour of emeralds and sapphires and its single visible eyes picked out in a tiny black diamond. The broach had been a gift from his favourite Uncle, Alpahrd, when he touched it he remembered the words that went with it;
This is from A Russian Wizard who created the design for the Faberge Eggs the Muggles prize so much, it is enchanted to bring the bearer good fortune. Wear it only on occasion. It is a gift so that when we are apart you will think of me...Sirius, my precious little one, you know I love you, don’t you?
“Yes, Oncle.” Sirius whispered to his reflection, he smiled softly at himself, proud that he looked so good. He knew his uncle would be proud of him too, he stood straighter just as the door to the room burst open and James came striding in, he paused as he scanned the room and his eyes widened as he saw Sirius in all his finery.
“Wow...” James breathed, he took a step closer and inspected Sirius’ robes. “Those are...”
“Magnificent?” Sirius smirked. “I chose them, fancy aren’t they?”
“They look a bit too Medieval for my liking but on you they look...perfect.” James’ eyes lingered on the broach of the humming bird, he touched its outstretched wing with the tip of a finger before withdrawing.
With a smile James walked off and changed into his robes while Sirius busied himself with his hair, no matter what he did his fringe continued to fall into his eyes, irritated he huffed and blew it out of his face. He shrugged and turned around to see James wearing robes of black with thick golden trimming along the cuffs of the sleeves and the hem, he turned and grinned. “Nice, simple but tasteful.” Sirius said and James nodded.
Together they went to the common room to collect their dates, James continued to fuss with his hair to make it messy so it looked as if he had just got off his broom. Sirius smiled, he liked James’ crazy hair. When they reached the bottom of the stairs they found Remus standing by the portrait hole looking slightly worried, he had chosen simple robes of a dark grey that looked nice on him, he smiled as his friends approached. “Hello, wow Sirius, you look nice! You’re going to show everyone up.”
Sirius grinned. “Of course, it comes from being exceptionally rich my friend.” His silver eyes gleamed from behind his fringe. “Are you waiting for someone?”
Remus fidgeted with the sleeve of his robes and nodded, his eyes gazed around the other boys standing in the common room with them. Then there was a collective gasp and all eyes moved to the stairs. A girl stood there, her green eyes marking her as Lily Evans, she had chosen dress robes of a pearly material the colour of ivory, it floated gracefully around her form making her look almost like a fairy. She smiled and flushed bright red as she saw everyone’s eyes on her, slowly she made her way down the stairs, her hair she had bound in a long braid that sat heavily over one shoulder. James let out an audible gasp, his face went red and he licked his dry lips before ignoring his friends and moving forward where he bowed politely and took her hand just as his parents had taught him to do on formal occasions. “You look...amazing.” He breathed loud enough for the room to hear.
Sirius stiffened, his hands clenching into fists at his sides as he watched James walk past him with only eyes for the red head on his arm. They left together and Sirius felt red hot fury encroach on him, he hated himself for it and the intensity of the emotion confused him, he was half tempted to go back upstairs and forgo the party before realising they had been preparing for their epic prank for a long time, he didn’t want to waste it. His own date came down with Remus’ she looked very pretty in silvery-blue robes with Jade lining and he managed to force his emotions away and smile as he took her hand and kissed it. It hardly occurred to him that he had chosen to go to the dance with a fellow pureblood.

The Great Hall was decorated spectacularly in organs and reds and blacks, the giant pumpkins ran down either side of the hall as the enchanted ceiling reflected the half moon in the real sky outside. Orange and black streamers fell down onto the heads of the revellers as live bats flew around the ceiling, diving down towards the party goers at odd, random intervals. Sirius grinned as he entered the hall with his date on his arm, he looked at the huge buffet and the band at one end of the hall, the teachers were all relaxed and watching the students with smiles. Already several people were dancing including McGonagall and Dumbledore.
“Would you like a drink?” Sirius asked Cora who nodded shyly as he pulled her gently to the table where a huge bowl of punch sat, every time a student went to pick up the ladle the bowl screamed at them. Sirius laughed at that, it amused him but his date jumped with fright, clinging to him tightly. Once they had their drinks Sirius spotted James talking with Lily Evans, he was messing his hair up casually, flashing his teeth in his sunshine smile as he talked loudly about himself and all the things he’d done, his family, his friends and even extended family. Sirius walked over and listened for a while.
“...My mum told her that she should get her priorities right, because really what she said was bang out of order...oh hullo Siri.” James grinned and Sirius returned it. Lily saw him and her eyes narrowed, she lifted her chin and ignored him with dignity, not that Sirius minded in the slightest. “So, you plan on dancing any time soon?” James cocked an eyebrow at Sirius in what appeared to be a challenge, Sirius knew by now that, despite their differences, they had had similar upbringings in the courtesy of Wizarding gatherings. Sirius smiled, accepting his challenge.
“Let’s show everyone how a true pureblood should act.” He turned to Cora and bowed gracefully. “Would you honour me with this dance?”
She blushed and curtsied, giggling slightly. “Of course.”
On the stage stood a witch wearing floaty robes of orange and black, she was singing to the tune of a lute and the steady beat of drums. Sirius led his partner out onto the floor where others danced, he took her hand as a new song began, the steady beat throbbing through the air. He took a breath and closed his eyes, remembering his strict training. The dance began.
Sirius and Cora circled each other, James and Lily imitated them so they worked in perfect symmetry, Cora knew the dance but it seemed Lily was unaccustomed to it as her faltering steps indicated. The two pairs kept their hands up, their palms touching as they circled one way, broke apart and turned in the opposite direction. It was an old dance, slow and measured and allowed only the palms to touch as if to preserve the dancer’s chastity. Sirius knew the steps so well he moved without thought, one hand held firmly behind his back, he flashed James a cheeky grin and James pocked his tongue out at him. The other dancers stopped to move back to the sides of the golden floor, they watched the two couples with awe. The dance was graceful and dignified, Sirius remembered his mother’s voice instructing him on the proper way to move his feet, on the way to properly execute the turns and when to change direction. He absorbed himself in the music until it was all that mattered.
The song ended and the dancers came to a halt, Sirius bowed once again and straightened to see Cora come out of her curtsy. She flushed and smiled when people began applauding, Sirius pushed hair from his eyes and searched for James, their eyes met and they grinned at each other at the exact same moment, expressing their merriment.
Remus accosted them as they left the floor, he was smiling and giggling. “I had no idea you two could dance!” He exclaimed.
Sirius and James smiled at each other. “Of course we can.” They said in unison. Then Sirius continued; “The oldest families retain old traditions, before Hogwarts we’re schooled in things like Dance, how to hold a proper conversation, enunciation...”
James continued right where Sirius left off. “How to hold dinner parties, how to integrate into high society, how to fence, how to read and write...”
“In short, when I say that my parents treat themselves like royalty I mean right down to the tiniest matters, I have been brought up to be able to socialise with the Queen of England if I so chose.”
James nodded agreement. “So have I, even though my mum and dad were much more relaxed than Sirius’.” He ruffled up his hair.
Lily gazed from one to the other with interest. “That seems really old fashioned.” She said softly.
Sirius let out a single bark of laughter. “Of course it is, have you looked around you? We’re wizards, Miss Evans.”
Lily’s green eyes darkened slightly and her posture stiffened. “And I’m a witch, whether you like it or not Mr. Black.”
Sirius shrugged. “What do my opinions matter? They will never change the world we live in.”
“If that’s so, then tell everyone here what you really think. Explain to us how you really feel about having people born of non-magical blood in the same school as you.”
Sirius licked his lips as all eyes landed on him, he gazed from Lily to James to Remus and back again, he felt a tight constriction in his chest. If she had asked him the same question before he had attended school he would have simply repeated his parents belief’s, it was what he had been told for eleven years of his life, it was the only truth he had ever known...but now...now he was confused. He had tried to avoid thinking about it, but now he was being forced to he had no idea what he believed. “I...” His eyes flicked to James who was watching his reaction curiously, Remus’ eyes glittered as he hid his thoughts behind a mask of patient indifference. “I...I don’t...I...” He cursed himself silently before he sighed and pushed hair from his eyes. “I don’t know what I believe.” He said softly.
“How can you not know? Everyone has their beliefs, we all know what we stand for and fight for...” Lily opened her mouth to continue but James put a hand on her arm.
“If he doesn’t know, he doesn’t know. Give him a break.”
Sirius moved towards a nearby window just as the evening light disappeared behind the horizon and plunged the hall into evening. He sighed. “For most of my life I was brought up to believe that Muggle’s and Muggleborns were only out to destroy Wizarding kind, my mother only ever read stories written by our ancestors, I was told that Muggleborns had stolen our power from us and would destroy us with it out of spite and jealousy...but now...” he trailed off and shrugged. “Now I wander...I’m not sure what is right and wrong anymore...” He ended his speech in a whisper so that only his friends could hear him, Remus put a hand on his shoulder and smiled.
“No one should tell you what to think, Sirius. You’ll discover your own beliefs and identity yourself and soon, don’t dwell on it.”
Sirius smiled at him before shaking off his melancholy and turning to James. “I reckon it’s time, don’t you?”
James grinned brightly, like the sun coming out from behind a cloud. “Indeed. Come on.”
Thanks to the massive amount of preparation they had gone through and Remus’ help, they didn’t have to do much at all. They avoided arousing suspicion by acting as normal as possible while keeping track of the time, their eyes continued to meet until Lily became suspicious. James guided her to the centre of the dance floor and away from the pumpkins, Sirius did the same with his date. They waited impatiently and, just as they were about to give it up as a bad job, there an explosion quickly followed by several more. Sirius let out a sharp bark of laughter as he turned to see the long line of Pumpkins exploding one after another in quick succession, innards spattered the party goers, girls screamed and boys swore loudly. The teachers watched the destruction with silent awe as gouts of pure white foam erupted from the large cake in the centre of the buffet table, covering the food in sparkling bubbles. Out of the foam then leapt hundreds of outraged toads, their croaking drowned out even the loudest student as they hopped around causing chaos.
Sirius turned to James and their hands met in mid-air, their laughter rose above the rest of the chaotic noise as they clutched each other desperately in order to contain their mirth. Lily frowned disapprovingly while Remus whistled innocently and wandered off on his own, he had great difficulty in hiding his own broad grin.
