Standing in the hospital wing, Severus was in a very serious conference with Poppy over the young girl that was lying on the bed, still twitching, while Minerva listened in, a grave look on her face. Black, Lupin, Lucius and Draco were there as well, looking grave. To the far side of the room Longbottom and Sprout were also talking in hushed tones, glancing at the bed repeatedly. As Severus conferred with the medi-witch, he couldn't help but think that if Harry hadn't found the girl when he did she would already be dead. Even now, though getting some kind of treatment, things weren't good.
It turned out the young snake, Amelia Hornsworth, had the Wizarding form of epilepsy. It was similar to what Muggles had though it tended to remain unnoticed for years after the injury that caused it. On top of that, it caused not only seizures but their magic to flare out of control at times with nothing to be able to stop it. That was the most concerning of things. As this was a rare disorder, not something that happened often, the treatment for it wasn't something that was kept around. In fact, that's what the discussion was about; obtaining the ingredients. The issue was the main ingredient was basilisk marrow and bones. Yes, it could be obtained, however it was not only expensive but it took time to get it as basilisks were not only rare but a risk to raise then harvest anything from. Most of what Britain got came from India. No matter how they went about it, it was going to take time to get. Even St. Mungo's didn't tend to have a supply on hand, ordering only when it was needed.
Sighing softly, looking at the bed once more, Severus shook his head. It appeared he was going to be spending the day preparing potions that would deal with the symptoms of it rather than treating until they could get the much needed ingredients. As even these were fairly complex, he was going to have to give up teaching for the day. Lucius and Lupin were going to cover them while Draco assisted. Black was going to handle all the DADA classes for the day. Pomona and Longbottom were going to use their classes to harvest some of the needed ingredients.
Standing there, Minerva shook her head. “How long do you think it'll take to get the ingredients you need, Severus? And how much will they cost. Of course, Hogwarts will cover all of that.”
“A week, minimum,” Severus told her gravely with a shake of his head. “And the cost will be astronomical because we have to rush it.” Looking at her, he asked, “Is there any way to get hold of Albus and see if he has any connections to obtain them faster?”
“I did this morning,” Minerva sighed then shook her head. “He said he will put out some feelers, but this is one of those times where he really doesn't know anyone. Even on the black market these things are hard to get. His owl stated he would keep trying. After all, he's at a big conference on the continent. He might be able to find someone with some connections.”
Sighing, Severus shook his head, “I'll see who I can contact to come up with something. I'm not expecting a miracle, though. Best I can see is getting them here faster when they are told what they are needed for. Nor, even if Albus could manage, would I trust anything that came from dodgy contacts. Too many fake ingredients out there at an astronomical price.” Sighing, he wondered if Harry might know anyone in France that might have connections, but quickly discounted that.
Standing there looking at the girl, he frowned slightly as something began to form. His mind played back over that one conversation they had a couple months before about the Chamber. Thinking hard, he tried to remember what Harry had said about the basilisk that was still contained in it. The more he thought, the more an idea began to take shape. Eyes widening, he stiffened up then told Minerva, tone tight, “Wait here, I may have an idea.”
Looking at the Potions Master, the deputy headmistress nodded, wondering what was going on. She did trust Severus, after all, and figured he might have a way to come up with something.
Sweeping over to the small group that was there, he pulled Black aside then began to confer with him in hushed tones. The animagus, eyes wide, nodded emphatically, talking back too low for the others to hear. Quickly they finished then, without a word to anyone, Black all but ran out of the infirmary.
Walking back to Minerva and Poppy, he said, “I think I have a way to get what is needed tonight. Though this has to be kept between us.” Looking over at the others in the room, he motioned them over then put a privacy spell around the whole ward in case someone came in.
“What do you mean by that,” Poppy asked, looking at him. “We both know how hard these things are to get your hands on.”
Making sure the privacy spell was in place, he said, “For this to work, I believe we all have to keep it a secret how it was managed, understood?” Seeing everyone nod, he told them, “Mr. Potter can get down into the Chamber. I don't know what remains of the basilisk down there besides bones but even those would work and I could get the marrow out of them no matter how old they are. It would also still be viable. I sent Black to ask him. I figure if we do it after everyone are in the dorms for the night and rounds are complete, we can keep it a secret who was here helping.”
“Severus, that's a brilliant idea,” Remus told him, grinning. “I don't see where Harry would say no. For something like this, he would do it in a second!”
“That's my thought as long as most, including Albus, don't know he's the one doing it,” Severus told everyone. “If we play this out right, it can be kept that way. Of course, the heads of houses will be told but they can keep it quiet. I thought that Potter, myself, Lucius, Black, Draco, Lupin and Flitwick could go down. Minerva, you stay up topside to keep an eye on things. We would have Hagrid on stand-by in case we find anything down there. I don't think we will, but better cautious than sorry.” Looking at Pomona, he said, “If you and Longbottom can get the other things ready, when we're done I can start brewing. We will have what is needed by the morning.”
“This is a good idea,” Minerva said, nodding. “It's also workable. We can keep it a secret. Harry told me once he didn't see anything else down there but it's better to take several of you. Not only would it make what you're doing faster, but if there is something, you can defend against it.”
“Once we're done, we can respell the locks so that the teachers can get in and this won't be needed anymore,” Severus explained.
“I'll do it, no problem there,” Draco told them. “I only see one problem; Myrtle. She's always in that bathroom. And she will talk. We have to get her out of there.”
“I suggest we enlist the Baron's help for that,” Lucius chimed in, liking this idea. “He can get her out of there and will keep his mouth shut. I know the other ghosts would be more than willing to help, but considering who's involved they are apt to let it slip, especially Sir Nicholas. There is no way I don't see him bragging that Potter helped.”
“You're right, Severus,” Minerva sighed, shaking her head. “Yes, talk to the Baron. I'm sure he can persuade Myrtle out of the bathroom and keep her busy long enough for you to do this.” Looking around, she asked, “Any other issues you see?”
Seeing everyone shake their heads, she said, tone firm, “We'll wait for Sirius to return then make plans. I'll get with Filius and go from there.”
Right at eleven PM on the dot, Harry walked up to the giant doors that were the entrance to Hogwarts. Covered by his cloak, he looked at them a few seconds, grinning, then pushed one of the doors open, slipping inside. From what he had been told, Minerva, Sirius and Remus were going to meet him there.
Not ten steps in and he saw them, waiting, talking amongst themselves. Slipping over to them, he said, quietly, not removing the cloak, “Alright, we ready?”
Jumping slightly, startled, Minerva turned in his direction and smiled when she saw him lower the cloak slightly, enough to get a glimpse of his face. Keeping her voice down, she said, “We're ready. Follow us. We have privacy spells up all around that bathroom. The Baron managed to persuade Myrtle out of the place. He and the other ghosts are going to keep her busy for several hours.” Smiling at him again, seeing Remus and Sirius grin, she motioned for him then said, “Follow me. The castle is going to make sure we can get there with none of the paintings seeing anything.”
“Right,” Harry said with a nod, keeping himself covered then began to trail them.
Once they reached the ward that was put up and stepped into the bathroom, Harry stripped the cloak off and tucked it into one of his pockets. Looking around, he grinned a bit. Despite the need for this, it felt good to see everyone. After getting a hug from Professor Sprout, a firm hand shake from both a grinning Neville and Professor Flitwick, he said, “Alright, how are we doing this?”
Nodding, Minerva explained, “You're going down with Filius, Draco, Lucius, Remus, Sirius and Severus. That way if there is an issue, you have plenty of bodies to help. Pomona, Neville and I will stay up here in case you have problems. We have Hagrid in the castle if you need help from him. We thought that once you open this door, I can respell it to where we can get in if needed.”
Nodding, Harry told her, “That sounds workable. However, there is another door down there that will need respelled as well.”
“I'll handle that when we get down there. Well, after anything else I'm needed for,” Filius told him with a nod.
“Anything else?” Harry asked, looking around.
“Oh, yes!” Filius said, pulling out something that looked like sunglasses. “Put these on. They won't stop the stare if there is another basilisk down there, but will make it to where you will only end up petrified.”
Nodding, everyone took a pair and put them on. Petrified wasn't the best of options but it sure as hell was better than dead.
After making sure the glasses were firmly in place, Severus asked, “Okay, how do we get down there?”
“I hope you're all up for a long slide,” Harry grinned. Seeing the faces turn towards him, he explained, “There are no stairs. It's a slide going down. I image that's how the basilisk got in and out.”
“Oh, wonderful,” Lucius grumbled, pinching the bridge of his nose over where the glasses rested.
“Anything else?” Minerva asked. When she saw Harry shake his head, she steeled herself, wand out, then said, “Let's do this. If there is an issue, let us know and we'll get down to you as fast as we can.”
After a nod, Harry stepped over to the sinks. Spying the little serpent on it, he hissed then, as it had that one time so many years back, the entranced opened. Wand out, insides quivering slightly as he remembered the last time he had to do this, he cast a Lumos then stepped onto the slide and went down.
Once at the bottom, he stepped to the side to make way for the others, casting a stronger lighting charm. Shivering from the memories of the dark, dank place, he looked around. Quickly, he spied the old shed skin that had been there when he and Ron had come down. Stepping over to it, making sure he was careful, he looked it over. It appeared to be just as it had been all those years ago. Not wanting to touch it, sure it was plenty fragile, he stepped back and waited.
When everyone was down and complaining about something, mostly the ride, he called out, “Severus, there is a shed skin here. I'm sure that it's the same one Ron and I saw all those years ago.”
Though dour over the ride down, something he certainly didn't like, Severus also cast a fairly strong light spell then walked over to Harry. Crouching down, he looked at the skin, pleased. It was certainly a basilisk skin. From the first glance, it appeared to be in wonderful shape. Nodding, he quickly lifted it with a spell and put it in a container Filius conjured. After that, they sent it up to the top.
Looking around, the Potions Master said, “There must be some kind of preservation spell down here for that thing to be in the shape it is. I doubt there is another basilisk of that size around here anywhere. To get to that size, it has to be centuries old.”
“When Ron and I came down, there was a skin in this part. I'm sure that's the one. It freaked us out when we saw it.” Looking back, he asked, “Everyone ready for this?” Seeing them nod, though most were a little pale, he then told them, “Alright, let's get to it!”
After getting by the part where the cave-in was, they reached the doors. Standing there, heart hammering in his chest, Harry took a deep breath then hissed for it to open. As it had all those years before, the mechanism activated and the doors slid open, revealing the chamber. Hearing some awed gasps and murmurs from behind him, he couldn't help but grin then said, “And this is it. One hint of a basilisk and you are all handling it. I took care of the last one, so it's up to you to take care of it if there is another.”
Chuckling, Sirius clapped Harry's back then said, “Don't worry. This time you're not alone.”
“And I'm not a bloody kid either,” Harry chuckled back. Stepping in, he looked around. Immediately, he spied the carcass of the basilisk. Like Hermione had told him, part of it, the head, was skeletonized but the rest appeared to be intact. Not at all curious or wanting to go closer, he looked at Severus then said, “Like you said, there must be a preservation charm somewhere. The part out of the main room, still in the shadows, looks fine. Will let you determine that though.”
Having everyone follow him with their wands out, Severus stepped cautiously over to the creature. Quickly, he determined it was dead and there was nothing there that could harm them. Nodding to himself, he unpacked the small satchel then called Draco over and began to work. Preparing to start to sever the part that was skeletonized from the part that wasn't, he had Lucius start to pack the bones in boxes that were conjured, making sure to warn him not to touch any of them because of any residual venom that might be on them. After spelling their clothes and putting on the best dragon-hide gloves they had to keep from getting anything on themselves, he and Draco went to work dismembering the body as best they could to take it down to pieces that were manageable in size. It would be easier to just shrink the whole thing but that meant that he would have to unshrink it to work with it. As that would take something the size of the Great Hall to do, he wasn't going to try. Instead, he thought this was best.
Once Draco was going good, he looked back at the rest. Filius was over by the door working on respelling it after having cast better lights into the chamber. The others were just looking around though Harry seemed to be staying in the middle, not appearing like he wanted to wander too much. Calling the three over, he said, “See if you can't find any more shed skins. Those will be most helpful. Just be cautious.”
Grinning a little, Harry shook his head then said, “Oh, you better believe I will be! I want no part of dealing with another one of those things.” Then, with a nod, he, Sirius and Remus went to see what they could find.
Looking after his lover as he went off, Severus couldn't help but smirk a little. Oh, he could most assuredly understand what was said. He also liked the fact that the young man wasn't willing to put himself at risk anymore. That made him feel better about things. Turning back to the carcass, he resumed work.
Wandering around, making certain their wands were out and ready, the three of them began to look in some of the crevice for skins or other things, talking quietly as they did. Once over by the statue where the basilisk had originally come out of, Harry peered into a crevice by it. As it was dark, he cast another Lumos and gasped at what he saw. Not only was there another shed skin but there appeared to be a nest of some kind with eggs in it. Looking at it, feeling his insides curdle slightly, he noted that one of them appeared to have hatched. Alright, that wasn't good, not at all. Taking a deep breath, he was about to call someone when he heard a hissing, something that was asking who was there.
Stiffening, feeling his skin start to crawl, Harry looked down at the ground automatically then hissed back, “Don't worry, we aren't here to hurt you. We're just here for the carcass, nothing more.”
“What are you?” The hissing voice asked.
Hearing whatever it was coming closer, Harry stiffened and slid a bit further away. Looking around frantically, he spied Sirius closest. Seeing his godfather glance in his direction, he motioned him over. Keeping his voice down, he said, “Get everyone over here, now! I think there is another basilisk!”
Turning white as a sheet, Sirius nodded then dashed off.
Taking a deep breath, Harry responded to the creature, “We're humans. Like what is up in the castle. We mean you no harm, I promise. Once we're done, we'll leave. Please, just stay where you are. Your stare can kill us.”
“Oh, like the two legged creatures in the castle! Yes, I know what those are,” the voice responded. “How is it you can speak to me?”
“It's a long story. Let's just say I can talk to snakes. It's a gift of some kind,” Harry explained, looking up at everyone coming over, wands already drawn. Holding up a hand to keep them there since he hoped that he could keep the creature where it was and not hurt it if they could at all help it. “I assure you, we don't want to hurt you. Just stay there and we'll be gone as fast as we can.”
“I won't harm you,” the creature said. “My gaze doesn't work. I'm blind.”
Relaxing slightly, though unnerved at hearing the slithering coming closer, Harry asked, “What do you mean doesn't work?”
“I've been blind since birth. I've never been able to see. I have to kill the normal way. Let me come out. It's dank and cold here.”
“Give me a minute. There are others here and we're all rather uptight about meeting a basilisk.” Hearing the creature hiss that was alright and no more movement was heard, Harry, wide-eyed, looked at the rest then explained what was going on. Seeing glancing between them, he asked, “What do we do?”
Licking his lips nervously, Lucius inquired, “Does it seem aggressive?”
“No, it's just talking to me. There are no threats or anything,” Harry told him with a shake of his head.
“Blindness has been known to happen in basilisks,” Severus told him. “It's a birth defect in some. They generally don't last long. I would assume this is a younger one, if that's the case. If it is blind, as it says, it must be the son of the one that died. Ask it, if you would. I see no reason to harm a creature that doesn't wish to harm us.”
“I agree,” Filius nodded. “We won't harm it if it won't harm us.”
Nodding, Harry took a deep breath then asked, “How old are you? Do you know?”
“I was born right after my father died. I'm the only one of the clutch to survive to birth. Please, allow me to come out.”
Nodding, calculating the age, Harry turned to the others. Explaining what was said, he asked, “Now what?”
Conjuring a sock to cover the snakes head if there was any hint of red, Severus said, “Tell him to come out. It's dangerous, I know, but what I could get from it would be more than worth the danger. Fresh parts, though he won't be harmed by me getting them, is far better than the carcass.”
Nodding, steeling himself, Harry said, “Alright, come out. There are several of us here but we mean you no harm, I promise. We won't be aggressive if you won't.”
“I will not,” the creature said.
Stepping back, wand held in a shaky hand, Harry waited. Quickly, a creature that looked like a snake, about two meters long, slithered out. Though it was dangerous, Harry glanced at the head and was relieved to see that the eyes were clouded over, no red in sight. It appeared, as the creature told them, it was blind. Crouching down, still clutching his wand, he said, “Hello, I'm Harry.”
Though confused by the beings around him, sensing them through other means, the basilisk turned towards the one called Harry. “Hello. I don't have a name but am pleased to meet you, one that speaks the language of snakes.”
“We won't harm you, I promise. Do you mind if we get the nest and skins? Or do you need them?” Harry asked, making sure to start translating what was being said as the others were wary.
“No, they aren’t needed. Why might I ask?” The snake inquired, curling up on the cold stone floor to keep itself warm.”
“They are something that can be used in potions. Those help cure sick humans. That's why we came down. We need the carcass of your father to cure a very sick girl in the castle.” Harry explained.
“It can help cure the ill?” The creature asked.
“It can,” Harry told it with a firm nod. “That's why we came down. We had no wish to harm or disturb you.”
“You may have them. I have no need for such things.” Stopping, the basilisk flicked its tongue out a few times before saying, “You reside in the castle? Is it warm there? It's cold here.”
“Are you cold?” Harry asked.
“Yes, it's so cold down here. I often try to go through the pipes to find somewhere warmer but I'm too small.” The basilisk explained.
“Hang on, let me warm up one of the stones further away for you. That way you get to be warm while we get the eggs, skin and nest,” Harry said, casting a warming charm on one of the stones a short distance away.
Sensing the heat from the stone, the creature moved over to it then settled down with a contented hiss. “Oh, this is nice. So warm!” Stopping, it pondered the beings there. It could sense some fear on them. As it felt the same way and since they were making no move to hurt him, he wasn't going to move. Focusing back on the one that was speaking to him, he said, “Take me into the castle where it's warm.”
Startled, Harry looked around at those there then translated it.
Looking at the others, Severus thought it over. “He is blind. His stare is the worst part. As it will take centuries for him to get big enough to be a problem, I think we should. The roosters, of course, are a problem. However, if I keep him down in my quarters in a tank, he should be fine. I can spell my quarters to keep the sound out. The venom from him alone would be a boon to the school. We won't discuss anything else.”
“It might not be that easy, Severus.” Filius said. “Harry is the only one that can communicate with him. If you try to get such things from him without him being able to communicate, you may get bitten. I agree, it would be most helpful, but it's risky.”
“Look, if need be I can come in and explain what's going on,” Harry said, looking around. “He doesn't appear aggressive. Hell, simple garden snakes I’ve run across are more aggressive than he is.”
“If Harry does what he says, I don't see an issue here. The poor thing is blind,” Remus said, looking around. Though not saying it, he was aware Harry was in the castle every night so he thought that might stave off things. “They are so rare that I can't see leaving him down here if we can do something. Let's bring him up. If nothing else, we can call the ministry to have them take him. They know what to do with such creatures. He wouldn't be harmed, would have a good home, all of it.”
Pondering what was said, Lucius chimed in, tone thoughtful, “He would be safe here. Hagrid can handle such things if there is an issue. We know that. If Mr. Potter is willing to communicate, I don't see where this is a problem. I'm sure we have a tank somewhere in the castle he could stay in. Even if he won't give venom or other things, he would be safe and not apt to get loose in the school.”
“There is that part,” Sirius nodded. “We know he's here now so the fear will be there of a repeat of what happened. I say we try. At least get him out of here then let Minerva and Albus decide what to do.”
Thinking it over, Filius then nodded slowly. “Yes, we don't need another basilisk in this chamber.” Looking at Harry, he asked, “Can you explain all this to him? See if he'll come and not harm anyone?”
“Give me a few,” Harry said, nodding. Turning back to the basilisk, he said, “We can take you out of here. There are problems, of course. People are scared of your kind. We don't want you hurting anyone. We can find a place for you to stay where you are safe and we'll feed you. Severus wants to know if you can provide venom and other things for him to make potions with. It won't hurt you, I promise. Though they can't talk to you, I can. I'm not around all day, but I do come in at nights and we can talk then. I promise to explain everything to you if you're nervous.”
“I will be somewhere warm and fed?” The basilisk asked, focusing on the one that spoke his language.
“We will make sure of it,” Harry told him with a firm nod. “No one will harm you. What we could get from you won't hurt you. You'll be well cared for and fed.”
“Then I agree. Warmth! I want warmth!” The basilisk hissed.
Looking back at the group he said, “He'll come.”
Conjuring a bag, something like canvas with a shoulder strap, Lucius spelled it to be warm then handed it to Harry. “Have him climb in that. He'll like it. It's not only warm, it'll make him feel safe.”
Taking it, Harry laid it down on the ground then explained to the basilisk what it was. Immediately, the creature slithered into it and curled up, expounding on how it loved the warmth. After a warning about what he was going to do, Harry picked it up and slid it on his shoulder. After confirming the creature was fine and content, he looked at everyone else, “Alright, he's good. Someone might want to alert them up top what we're going to be bringing with us and get Hagrid to meet us there. He can look him over since I’m sure he knows more about such things than we do.”
“I'll handle that, Harry,” Filius nodded. “Just keep him calm until we get done.”
Looking at the bag, Severus nodded as well, “This works well. Let's hurry and finish up. Grab the eggs, skins and anything else you can find. Harry, you come with me and stay by my side in case there is a problem.”
“Right, no argument there,” Harry told him. Explaining to the basilisk what was going on, he walked with Severus.
Once the Potions Master was back to work on the carcass, he said, chuckling, “You lot owe me for this! I said no more basilisks!”
Hearing an amused snort from Draco, Severus said, tone dry, “So much for Gryffindor courage, Mr. Potter!”
“Hey! One basilisk encounter in a lifetime is more than enough! And that one was bad! I didn't need any more,” Harry grinned.
“There is that, yes,” Severus said, looking at the carcass. “From the look of this one, it was plenty bad.”
“Yeah, you face that thing with an old hat and sword then see how courageous you are,” Harry told him. “At the age of twelve, no less! I still have a faint scar where that thing bit me!”
Shuddering at how bad that must have been, Severus shook his head then said, “I don't even want to imagine how frightening that was.”
Snorting, Harry said, lowering his voice so only Severus could hear, “Trust me, it was bad. I still have nightmares about that shite.”
Nodding, looking at his lover, Severus said nothing. Sometimes he forgot how old Harry was when some of this happened. He knew that from time to time, Harry had nightmares about some of it. This one... well, he didn't want to ponder how bad it was.
An hour later and everything was attended to. The boxes and crates that contained the parts had been levitated into the bathroom. Filius had managed to transfigure the slide into stairs so everyone had just walked up rather than having to go about it another way.
Stepping into the bathroom, they were met by a concerned looking Minerva who had her hands clasped tightly in front of her. Looking down at the bag Harry was wearing, she looked around, expression tight, “You found another basilisk? It's blind, right?”
“He's blind, yes. His eyes are cloudy, like a milky white. Don't worry, he's not aggressive and is happy as a clam in the warm bag,” Harry told her.
Motioning Hagrid over, she had Harry remove the creature. With an ill concealed joy, the half-giant gave the creature a once over after Harry made sure to explain that he wouldn't be hurt. After pronouncing that the basilisk looked fine, though underweight, Hagrid gently put him back in the bag and handed it back.
Nodding, Minerva told them, “We have the tank down in Severus' quarters. Hagrid made sure there were a couple dead ferrets in it for him. You're certain about this, Severus? He's dangerous.”
“I think we'll be fine.” Severus nodded. “Mr. Potter has offered to come in and talk with him if I need anything. For now, he should be safe. I'll leave what to do with him up to you and Albus.”
Sighing, Minerva nodded again, “Alright. On your own head be it, Severus. Now, let's get this down to your quarters so you can start.”
“I'll need help. Draco can do the main assisting but Lucius, Black and Lupin will be needed as well. Pomona and Neville can go bring what is needed from the greenhouses.”
“I'll help too, if you need it,” Harry offered. “I can get Medani settled into his tank and calm then give an assist.”
Before Minerva could say anything, Severus told him, “Fine, you're helping. I'm sure we can ensure you get out of the castle before breakfast in the morning with no one the wiser.” Arching an eyebrow, he asked, “Medani?”
Grinning, Harry said, “Well, he needs a name and that's a good one. Before you ask, it's in a Muggle game called Dungeons and Dragons. It's the name of a house whose symbol is the basilisk. Besides, he likes it. It's better than no name at all!”
Chuckling, Minerva said, “Sounds like a good name to me. And, yes, we can get Harry out with no one the wiser.”
“So be it,” Severus nodded. “Come, we have much work to do!” With that, he began to levitate the boxes, directing them in a line out of the room.
