I'm feeling generous today (and have a lot of time on my hands!) so I'm putting up 3 chapters today...mostly to make up for the lack of Lucius/Hermione action in this chapter.
Don't be disappointed-the best is yet to come!
"She did WHAT?" the normally calm Harry was trying not to punch Ron as he sat whimpering in a corner of the room, "WHAT DID YOU DO TO MAKE HER LEAVE?" Harry continued yelling, only calming down slightly when Ginny, who Ron had insisted come along to protect him from such a scenario, grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
"Let's hear the whole story Harry", Ginny said, shooting Ron a glare, "You think she cheated on you? I wouldn't be surprised after the amount of attention you've been paying her in the last few years!"
Her accusation struck a raw nerve with Ron, who knew he had taken Hermione for granted. "I knew she was pulling away from me", he mumbled back, trying not to lose his temper, "She told me this morning she had even applied for a job".
Harry's green eyes pierced into him as he spat out, "It has NEVER been a crime to want to work Ron! She's my best friend. She used to be yours too and now, thanks to you and you're insensitive ways, we've both lost her!"
"Ron", Ginny tried a gentler tone of voice, knowing her brother was deeply regretting his behaviour, "What makes you think she cheated with Lucius. They might just be friends-he must have changed. You know how Hermione always befriends those she thinks are being treated unfairly by society".
"No", Ron mumbled back, "She isn't just friends with him. She told me. She's with him, has been for years. Through our entire sham of a marriage I think".
Ginny gasped in shock, looking at Harry, who also looked worried. "That doesn't sound like Hermione", she said quietly as Harry slung is arm around her shoulder, pulling her close to him for comfort.
"Did she say anything else? Did it look like she was being controlled by him?" Harry threw questions at Ron, trying to make sense of the situation.
"All she said was her and Lucius have a bond and she has to leave me", Ron stated, his voice sounding dejected as he slumped against the wall in defeat.
"A bond?" Harry thought out loud, "Could that be…it would be a strong bond?" he looked at Ginny for confirmation.
She nodded, her arms around his waist. "There are all kinds of bonds that can surpass the effects of a marriage bond, which is what Ron's description of the situation sounds like. It would have to be as powerful as an unbreakable vow at least…I don't know much about it really. If Hermione…" she trailed away, leaning into Harry as he finished her sentence for her. "Hermione would know all about it if she were here. Probably would have done some kind of research".
He sighed as he looked between Ron and Ginny. "Well", he said at last, running his free hand through his already tousled hair, "It looks like we're gonna have to hit the books-without Hermione to prompt us this time. She would be so proud", he chuckled slightly as Ginny nodded and Ron started to move from his position on the floor. "The Ministry of Magic Library should have information on this", Harry added as he and Ginny lead the way out of the house, trailed by Ron.
They would find a way to help Hermione-somehow.
Meanwhile, at Malfoy Manor, an agitated Narcissa was pacing back and forth in the parlour room. "What has he done now?" she muttered to herself, her voice filled with venom. She had been having a conversation with Draco over the floo network, something she did almost every week without fail. He was her only son after all and honestly, she preferred to talk to him than Lucius. She had gradually realised, after Draco had first started Hogwarts, that she was not truly in love with Lucius.
She followed the proper etiquette expected of a pureblood wife and obeyed her husband as was expected but even the small amount of respect she had once had for him vanished once he was unable to prevent Draco from getting the Dark Mark. She had gone to see him in Azkaban, pleading him to do everything he could to stop their son from being initiated into what was apparently becoming a losing cause. "Lucius! He will listen to you! You have always served him well. Ask for a favour? Or bargain? Anything it takes!" she had cried desperately once they were left alone in his cell.
"I cannot Narcissa! You should know I would do everything in my power to stop Draco from committing the same mistakes I did but he doesn't have a choice with this. I failed the Dark Lord at the Department of Mysteries…Potter was within our grasp and I…let him slip away. I have fallen out of favour with the Dark Lord and any begging I do will only make the situation worse for Draco", Lucius had responded, sounding broken and in her eyes, weak.
"So what you're saying is you are too much of a coward to face the Dark Lord's wrath for your only son!" Narcissa had hissed at him, without a tinge of compassion for his circumstance. He had deserved everything he got. It was one of the simplest missions he could have been entrusted with and he failed! Against a bunch of teenagers!
"Don't you DARE!" Lucius' iron grip on her hand belayed his fragile demeanour. "NEVER call me a coward and expect to live. You know what I am capable of", his low tone caused her to back away. No. She had lost all respect she had for him that day, when he had forced her to take matters into her own hands and seek out Severus' help, but she wasn't foolish.
She was perfectly aware of Lucius Malfoy's dark nature and she knew he was a dangerous man to cross. She had left silently, shaking with rage but valuing her life more. Since the war, her and Lucius had been distant. She hardly ever saw him in the last decade, ever since he had isolated her to a separate wing of the house. They had separate bedrooms, kitchens and libraries. The only time she ever came into contact with him was on the rare occasions when he commanded her to attend a formal event or party with him, and those were few and far between. She could remember the last time clearly-four years ago.
She had tried to remain cold and distant but his power still had the ability to scare her so when he had grabbed her arm as they were entering the venue (an official ministry dinner) and whispered menacingly in her ear that she "had better behave and play the part properly", she had simply nodded and followed his instructions. As far as she could remember, even before she had displeased him, Lucius had been like that. Arrogant, commanding and if it hadn't been for her family's expectation that she marry him and elevate their own status in society, she would never have given him a second glance.
At this event, however, she had been surprised to see Lucius talking to a much older Hermione Granger…no it was Weasley now. He commandeered her for a dance and Narcissa watched, something resembling jealousy in the pit of her stomach, as he smiled and laughed with her, his demeanour undergoing a drastic change. She also noticed that he only behaved in this way towards Hermione, as if she were someone special. Narcissa had almost scoffed aloud at the thought that Hermione might have gained her husband's interest. "As if he would ever go for a mudblood like her", she had thought to herself and ignored the little voice in her head that seemed to think otherwise.
She had been slightly disappointed when, upon their return home, Lucius retired to his own wing of the manor for bed, turning down her not so subtle offer that he was most welcome in hers. Narcissa had not slept with her husband in many years, not since the end of the war and she did not enjoy the feeling that he didn't seem to miss her presence at all.
It was today however, during her morning floo call with Draco, that she realised something was gravely wrong. In the middle of her conversation, the parlour room had started to glow, startling Draco and her. "Mother?" he asked as she seemed to be surrounded by the glow, "What is that?" Narcissa had been about to shake her head in confusion when a silver thread appeared out of her wedding band, winding itself around her waist. "Mother?" Draco repeated, looking worried. Narcissa could hardly believe it herself.
Of course she knew what this was. Her marriage bond. By the time she realised what the situation was, it was too late. The silver thread started to wither away in front of her before it completely vanished and all she could do was gasp in shock. "Mother?" Draco had asked again, looking to her for an explanation.
"My marriage vows…they've been dissolved", she whispered, trying to make sense of the event.
"What?" Draco had asked, completely confused, "What does that mean? Where is Father?"
Narcissa had shaken her head again, her dominant emotion being anger as she realised the significance of her situation.
"You're father it seems, has found a way to both cheat on me and dissolve our marriage without triggering the curses that are caused by the marriage bond to an unfaithful partner!" she had spat out the statement, anger clouding her vision as she realised she had just been magically divorced, without even having a choice.
"B..But…how can that be?" Draco had asked, "A marriage bond can't be dissolved without both the husband and wife agreeing to it…and even then, it could take years for the bond to completely fade. That took…seconds!"
He had looked to her for reassurance but his question had caused Narcissa to search her brain for all knowledge on marriage bonds. "The only way he could have accomplished this was by forming a bond with someone else…and it would have to be very powerful if he has escaped the effects of the marriage bond", Narcissa muttered to herself.
"So…you mean like an unbreakable vow?" Draco had interjected, trying to follow her thought process.
"No…something much more powerful", Narcissa had replied before cutting Draco off and taking up her vigilance in the parlor.
"Just wait until he returns. How DARE he do something like this to me? Make me the laughing stock of wizarding society? If he thinks I'll stand for it he's…" her muttered curses and retorts were heard that day, only by the house elves who slaved away around the manor.
They shook their heads at each other and whispered, "There is a new mistress. Me can feel it in me bones!" and so, to Narcissa's fury, not a single elf could be summoned despite her shouting to go and find the Master of the House.
She finally stopped her pacing, lowering herself onto one of the large chairs that decorated the room. "He will not escape without an explanation", she promised herself and got up, checking that her wand was in her pocket before making her way out of her wing and into the main house.
He would have to face her sooner or later and she would be prepared, to battle until death if necessary. Or at least, until the death of the whore that stole her husband.
Narcissa prepared for a long wait, smiling at the thought that the witch who had taken her place in her husband's heart, would never have a chance to experience the power that came with being the Lady of Malfoy Manor!
