AN: I think I will have a little explanation here: Sirius is suffering from a form of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) it is something that people get if they have had a major trauma in their lives, in this case he was raped by his own father. Now, because of this he is emotionally unstable, so he may appear to be weeping a lot but this is why, no human being can have something like that happen to them and not come away with some emotional scars. Also, Sirius in Canon is described as being very emotionally stunted. He is immature and has bouts of childishness; I have simply accentuated this Canon characteristic. Basically he is a moody, spoilt brat who can be extremely selfish at times but is ultimately good and loyal, to be honest this is how I see Sirius Black, I always have done. In Canon he is thirty-odd years old yet sulks like a teenager, I know this is due to the time he spent in Azkaban but I firmly believe that he was like that as a teenager as well. As for the James/Sirius pairing, I have put this story into the Remus/Sirius section so my intention was to slowly move it on from J/S to R/S. There will still be the basic love triangle in the background but it won’t be as much of a heavy focus.
I am trying to develop Remus and Sirius’ Wolf-Bond in this chapter, the mating season is something I have researched thoroughly and yes, in this case Sirius is representing the ‘Alpha-Female’ in the pack…no idea why but this amuses me. :p Enjoy.
Chapter Seven
They returned to Hogwarts for their seventh year in relatively high spirits, James had become Head Boy, much to Sirius’ delight as he now had good reason to tease him. The first month was relatively easy, they spent time being lectured by their teachers on how essential their seventh year was and spent the rest of that time going over notes they had collected over the past six years. Time rolled easily through September into October.
Sirius felt strange when he was around Remus, he spent time drawing close to his side and gently brushing against him. Remus seemed oblivious to these strange movements, Sirius began to become concerned as his body acted against his will. He would sit at the same table as Remus and press his leg against his friends, he would lean on him while they were sat in the common room and at night he would wake up abruptly and feel consumed with an insane need to be as close to his mate as possible. As Halloween drew closer Remus seemed to become irritable at these advances and subtle signals, he would push Sirius away when he came too close and sometimes would even snap angrily at him.
During the full moon of that month the two wolves grew agitated, Moony would turn on the black without provocation, he would use his body weight to push the other wolf beneath him and hold him down until he stopped resisting. When they woke in the morning Sirius had two long scratches across one cheek. Remus felt guilt stir inside him and he drew close to his mate, Sirius averted his eyes as Remus gently touched the shallow wounds. “I’m sorry…I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
“Neither do I…I can’t seem to stop wanting to be close to you!” Sirius huffed so his fringe fluttered. They sat on the bed within the shack as the early morning sun rose above the forest.
“I didn’t mean to-”
Sirius smiled and kissed Remus’ lips, cutting him off mid-sentence. “It’s fine. I’m going to get scars now, it’s inevitable.”
“Yes but they’re in such an obvious place!”
Sirius touched them lightly. “I don’t think they’ll be too obvious and they may even add to my considerable looks.” He grinned deviously.
Remus chuckled. “Your arrogance astounds me, Padfoot.”
“I merely speak the truth Mr. Moony, you know I do.” He replied, running fingers through his hair as he attempted to put it into some semblance of neatness. He smiled as Remus ran his own fingers through it, untangling the knots there and drawing him closer. They touched noses briefly and smiled before pressing their lips together, they kissed slowly, tongues meeting and tangling. Sirius moaned softly as he pulled away and pushed his head into Remus’ touch. “Let’s get dressed, Pomfry will want to check us over and complain about these scratches.” He rolled his eyes as he slid off the bed and began dressing, Remus watched him a moment and couldn’t prevent the small smile crossing his face.
As November passed them all by leaving them stressed and irritable from the huge amounts of homework the teachers were giving them, James noticed the strange behaviour between his friends for the first time. When he managed to spend time with them, which was rare due to his duties as Head Boy, he began to see a change come over Remus. He began to become unusually protective of Sirius, who seemed utterly oblivious to it. It began with little things, Remus would put his arm around Sirius, the gesture, on the surface, looked perfectly normal but James knew him well enough to notice the change in body language. If someone else came close to talk to Sirius with impure intentions Remus would stand between them, once again the behaviour looked perfectly innocent on the outside but James could see it for what it was. Sirius spent his time as close to Remus as possible, their bodies always touching in one way or another. James found it odd so he decided to do some extracurricular research, he soon discovered that at this time of year Wolves began to start their mating rituals. Through his personal pain, which came each time he thought of Remus and Sirius together, he felt a bubble of amusement.
Sirius looked down as James plonked the book before him, he blinked down at it. “What’s this?”
“Just read the page.” James said, leaning on the arm of the armchair Sirius occupied. He grinned as Sirius raised an eyebrow before leaning over and reading the page, after a minute or so he looked up at James again.
“You’re kidding me?”
James snorted and moved so he was perched on the arm. “No. You and Remus are getting ready to mate…” He couldn’t hold it in any longer, he began to laugh. He laughed so hard he fell off of the chair and onto the floor.
Sirius frowned irritably and once again read the book, sure enough it was there in black and white. During the winter months a Wolf, both natural and Supernatural type would begin the mating rituals. “Well…that explains a lot.” Sirius sighed as he closed the book. “You do realise that our case is er…different?” He asked James who still lay on the crimson carpet.
“Have you ever considered that in wolf form you might not be male?” James said, he tried to force his face into a serious expression but his lips kept twitching at the hilarity of it. He couldn’t seem to shake the mental image of Sirius with puppies.
As if he had read James’ mind Sirius kicked James in the side. “Bastard. You almost had me there…I’m male, I can’t have babies.”
“I know…b-but it’s…h-hilarious…” James laughed, unable to help himself, he rolled on the floor until Sirius stood up and leapt at him. They spent some time rolling around before the fire laughing and trying to hit each other. Finally Sirius got the upper hand, he pinned James down with a smirk of triumph, he held his wrists tightly as he straddled his chest.
“Yield?” Sirius asked, quirking his eyebrow.
James grimaced. “Alright! Fine! Your hurting me…you’re bloody heavy!”
“No, Jamie, you’re just too skinny.” Sirius smirked and began poking James in the side, the boy jerked and giggled in a rather humiliating way.
“Ah! S-Siri…Sirius…S-Stop! That’s…that’s…” He laughed loudly. “Stop! I-I yielded!”
Sirius stopped and chuckled as he released James, he stood up and reached down so James clasped his wrist. He helped his friend to his feet and they sat back down on the sofa with content sighs.
Soon Sirius began to notice when he was flirting with Remus, he could no longer help himself so he gave in to the urges. He kept his advances subtle, he wasn’t ready for the whole school to discover he was gay. He made sure that his fingers would brush Remus’ when he handed him something, he would smile his most seductive smile when he caught Remus’ eye and he could see a flicker of something in his mate’s gaze. But most of the time it was difficult to tell if he was succeeding, Remus seemed off with him and he was having a difficult time attracting anything except the odd coarse remark from his friend. But apparently it wasn’t just Remus he was willing to flirt with, James found himself the object of Sirius’ intense gazes more than once which confused him and made him feel uncomfortable.
It was the most confusing time of Remus’ life, he had never had a mate and he hadn’t known what to expect but he certainly hadn’t expected to feel the wolfish feelings and behaviour seeping into his human life. He found himself feeling unreasonably jealous of anyone who showed any kind of interest in Sirius, he wanted to bite them and growl, warm them away from what was his. He also got strangely irritable when Sirius pressed close to him, in the past such things had never bothered him but now he felt the sudden rise of anger that wasn’t his. It was like going through puberty all over again. What made him most angry, however, was when he saw Sirius flirting with James. The wolf screamed for blood when Sirius would hold James’ gaze for longer than normal, or when he would brush against him, even the lightest touch of their fingers sent Remus into a spiral of raging jealousy and intense anger. During those times he would escape from whatever room they were in and catch his breath, he couldn’t afford to lose it before so many witnesses.
Finally December arrived bringing with it a flurry of snow and ice, the students became excited about the oncoming of Christmas and they spent as much time as they could playing outdoors. Sirius and James had plans to return home for Christmas, Sirius intending to spend some time getting his new flat furnished and wishing to spend a last holiday with Mr and Mrs Potter, James wanted to be by his friends side for as long as possible. Remus decided he would spend Christmas with his own parents, he needed to speak to his mother and father about moving out that summer.
On the last day of term Sirius wandered the corridors alone, he was returning from the library which had only just closed. He hefted his bag into a more comfortable position and walked down the corridor humming to himself as he went, he was looking forward to curling up by the fire and relaxing for a while. As he turned a corner he found himself confronted by a group of Slytherin sixth years, he paused as they were blocking the top of the stairs. When his footsteps came to a halt they turned and gazed at him, he spotted his brother immediately and it soured his mood. He hadn’t spoken to Regulus since he had left home, in fact he made a point to avoid him. Their eyes met and Sirius braced himself mentally. “Reg.” He said courteously, his fingers gripped his wand tightly in his pocket, he could never be too careful.
Regulus looked at him, his face a mask. “Sirius.” He said, his voice stiff and formal.
There was an awkward silence in which Sirius shifted uncomfortably from one foot to another, he glanced warily at Regulus’ friends but they appeared absorbed in watching the exchange. “I need to get down there.” Sirius said, waving his hand down the stairs.
One of the boys sneered. “Give me one reason why we should move for something like you?”
Sirius’ jaw tightened, he glared at the boy who had spoken. “Fuck off and just get out my way.” He snapped, feeling anger rise.
“Just leave it, we don’t have any reason to fight.” Regulus said, finally tearing his eyes from his brother, he stepped out of the way and Sirius nodded to him before making his way past them.
Regulus watched Sirius pass, and spotted something on his cheek. He frowned and automatically reached out, his fingers found Sirius’ sleeve and stopped him. “What happened to your face?” He exclaimed, forgetting himself.
Sirius turned surprised eyes on him and blinked, slowly he touched the two faint scars. “Oh…this is nothing.” He said and shrugged his arm free.
“That’s not nothing…why hasn’t Pomfry got rid of the scars…unless It’s…”
“Reg, leave it.” Sirius snapped with a glare at his brother.
Regulus sent him an equally heated look. “You’re always trying to hide stuff from me! I’m your brother!”
Sirius laughed, a single bark that echoed through the nearly empty stair well. “That’s funny, Regulus.” He said. “I was disowned if you remember?”
Reg paused, unable to say anything to that. His friends eyed him suspiciously and he covered his emotions with cold indifference. “I was just saying that this is one of the reasons you were disowned, always thinking you could go and do anything you wanted without consulting Mother and Father.”
Sirius turned away. “You don’t understand.” He said in a low voice. “And I hope you never do.” He walked down a few more steps before Reg caught him again, this time by the wrist.
“I understand, Sirius, I’m not quite as stupid as you make me out to be.” Regulus hissed in a low voice, his friends stood at the top of the stairs gazing down at them curiously. “You were always trying to be the rebel, trying to separate yourself from us but at the end of the day you’re a Black! You will always be a Black, Sirius! It’s pointless denying it. All you did when you left was cause mother’s heart to break…”
Sirius spun around, he grabbed his brother by the scruff of his shirt and slammed him roughly against the stone banister. “Don’t you dare try and pretend that Mother gives a flying fuck about me! Don’t you tell me that she misses me! She hates me, she always will! You don’t know what happened, you weren’t there! You were always with your friends or playing Quidditch in the garden! You never saw anything…”
“So father hit you occasionally, it’s not like you didn’t deserve it!” Regulus snapped back, his hands gripping his wrists tightly. “Let go of me!”
Sirius shook him, forcing a startled gasp from his lips. “Bastard!” He hissed furiously. “He didn’t just hit me because I did something wrong! He wasn’t just giving me a slap around the fucking wrist! He beat me to within an inch of my life!”
Regulus’ lips tightened and for a second Sirius thought he saw something in his eyes soften, he released him and stepped back breathing more heavily than he wished as years of memories re-surfaced like rotting corpses from an open grave. “You could have prevented it.” Regulus said quietly. “You could have stopped it from happening, all you needed to do was conform to their wishes…it’s not hard. When you left mother cried…”
Sirius’ face became a mask of disgust. “I hope she dies of that supposed broken heart…or whatever resides in that empty chest of hers.”
Regulus’ eyes widened at the venom in his brothers face and voice. “You can’t actually mean that!”
Sirius smiled nastily. “I do and you know I do.” He picked up his bag, which he had dropped when he had accosted his brother.
“Sirius…Where did you get those scars? Not just the ones on your face but the ones on your shoulder and neck…” Regulus spoke in a tiny voice, a voice that reminded Sirius of nights when he would sneak into his bedroom and ask for a story because he was afraid of the Boggart in his wardrobe. “They’re not normal scars…I-I saw them a moment ago when we were so close. Sirius…a-are you…have you been…?” He couldn’t articulate what he wanted to say so he lapsed into silence while Sirius gazed off down the corridor below them. The scars Regulus had seen when Sirius’ robes had slipped had looked suspiciously like teeth marks, the teeth of a massive animal and the only kind of animal he could think of that his brother wouldn’t have been able to fight off was a werewolf. He shuddered in fear and backed away a pace as Sirius looked at him again, he got his confirmation in those silver grey eyes, eyes so much like his own. “Oh…Oh Merlin…” He muttered and stepped up another stair. “It’s…tell me it’s not true…”
Sirius looked away, lowering his head slightly so hair slid across his face. “You wouldn’t believe any lies I told you, Reg. I never could lie to you…little brother.” He looked up again and smiled bitterly. “You’re a good kid, Reg. Don’t let the family suck the life out of you, get out while you still can before you get yourself in too deep.” With that he turned and walked away, Regulus watched him go with a sad expression on his face.
XXX
“Well, this is it.” Sirius said and turned to his friends who stood at the door looking around the living room with mild interest. “What do you reckon?”
“It’s nice.” James said with a smile.
“Where will I be staying?” Remus asked, eyeing the décor curiously.
“Through here…” Sirius led them past the kitchen/living room and towards the spare bedroom. “It’s small but I reckon it’d be ok for just you.” He smiled as Remus admired the room.
“Ah, wish I was moving out too.” Peter said with a quiet sigh.
“You will one day, Pete, don’t worry.” James replied and clapped him on the back.
“No, I won’t.” Peter said miserably. “My mum won’t let me, she keeps telling me I’m still her little baby and she won’t even let me out the house without wanting to know where I’m going all the time…it’s so annoying.”
Sirius and James shared a glance and quickly looked away, Peter’s mother was overbearing and treated her son like a child, which was a constant source of amusement for the rest of the Marauders. After the tour they returned to James’ parents for Mince Pies and Mulled Wine, Sirius and Remus got very drunk and began getting extremely touchy feely with each other. James sat on the sofa and watched Sirius, he couldn’t stop staring at him and it annoyed him. Sirius’ cheeks were flushed from alcohol as he laughed brightly at something Remus had said, his eyes sparkled with a newfound joy and he swayed where he sat as he finished off his sixth goblet.
After a while Remus went to stand outside, he leaned on the Potters’ gate and looked up at the sky, the moon was a day from its full and its big silver face gazed down at him and made his skin crawl unpleasantly. He had begun to find that he was becoming more comfortable with his Wolf-side, now that he was no longer alone when he changed he felt more at peace with himself, it was as if he had a comforting blanket around him that eased his transformations. The wolf wasn’t nearly as angry as it had been, Sirius’ companionship seemed to ease the wrath and make the wolf much more relaxed. As he stood there, feeling the frozen breeze caress his cheeks he felt the familiar presence of his partner, he smiled softly as Sirius’ scent wafted over him. The pheromones were so overwhelming he shivered, arms wrapped themselves around his waist and he felt Sirius bury his face in his neck. “Are you alright?” Sirius whispered.
“I am now.” Remus replied and turned around to face his mate, he smiled and brushed some errant strands of hair from his eyes. The moonlight highlighted Sirius’ face giving him a silvered glow and making his eyes shine brightly in the gloom, he sighed and pushed his hands into his hair. He leaned forward and pressed their lips together, Sirius pulled away before the kiss could be deepened and suddenly turned away.
“It’s cold, let’s go back inside.” He muttered.
“Sirius, wait.” Remus grabbed him and pulled him back, without thought he pushed him into the wall beside the porch and kissed him feverishly. It was as if someone had swapped his blood for fire, his body heated to impossible proportions. He moaned and felt Sirius melt in his embrace, strong arms enveloped him and they held each other close. This is perfection, Remus thought as waves of bliss made his heart beat erratically within his chest.
James watched his friends kiss frantically against the wall, Sirius’ fingers tangled in Remus’ hair and shirt, he heard the little sounds of desperation they were making and shuddered. They weren’t the sounds of human beings, he stepped back and closed the door before falling against the wall and pushing both hands into his hair. He closed his eyes tightly and let out a slow breath. He couldn’t let Sirius go as easily as he had first thought, he wanted him. He wanted him like he had wanted nothing else in his entire life, Sirius was everything. But he had to let him go, Sirius belonged to another, he belonged to an angry, jealous wolf.
Sirius pulled out of the kiss and nuzzled Remus’ throat, he got a soft growl in response as hands tightened on his clothing. The moon hung over them, watching their every movement as the world seemed to come to a halt. “Let’s go home.” Sirius breathed. He had not failed to notice James’ scent as he had stood by the back door, and he wasn’t stupid enough to think that what he had witnessed hadn’t hurt him.
Remus nodded, he understood. It was better they didn’t flaunt it before James, they were all friends still and things were hard enough as it was. Yet he couldn’t deny the urges flooding his system, Sirius was giving off an intoxicating scent that made him dizzy with desire and he could quite happily take him up against the cold stone wall. They re-entered the house and saw James leaning against the wall, his glasses looked slightly lopsided as he gave them both a weak smile. “You’re leaving.” He said, it wasn’t a question so Sirius said nothing. They watched each other for a long time before James conceded by breaking the eye contact. “Have fun.” He said stiffly and adjusted his glasses. “Looks like it’s just me an’ Peter tonight.”
“We’ll see you Boxing Day, James.” Remus said softly.
James merely nodded, a distracted frown on his face hid his true feelings. “Cool, see you around.” Sirius opened his mouth to speak but James walked away leaving him standing there with his mouth open, he closed it and gritted his teeth. He felt Remus slip his hand into his own and their fingers entwined, the touch was oddly comforting.
