Chapter 7
Looking at the list of things they had to do and pick up that day, Severus nodded, pleased. There wasn't much there, honestly. In fact, it shouldn't take but a couple of hours that morning to get it accomplished. While Black took Harry to the Healer for his pre-surgical checkup, he and Remus were going to visit their son's Mind Healer to see what they could accomplish there when it came to James and Lily. After that, he had to stop at the Apothecary for a couple of ingredients he needed, then they were done for the day.
Setting the list aside then taking a sip of his coffee, Severus looked at his son. Harry kept glancing at the Prophet, but refused to pick it up and read it as his son knew what was in it from the headline that seemed to scream about Lily, James and Albus' return. Actually, as he had read the article before Harry came down, he thought it might do him good to look at it, but didn't say anything. This was Harry's way of dealing with what was going on, so he was going to let it continue. It was his assumption that before the day was out Harry would read it. And he would like what was in it because none of the three were given any benefit of the doubt on anything and what was there was scathing. When the time came that Harry would read it, they would deal with it from there.Finishing his coffee then having it refilled, he looked at Harry and asked, “What is it you want to do after your Healer's appointment? As always, we'll let you pick something you think you'll enjoy.” This was their standard when it came to such matters. The appointments Harry had with his Healers weren't at all pleasant and were embarrassing, so they always let their son pick an activity he thought would be fun afterwards to balance it out.Polishing off his bacon, Harry reached into his pocket and pulled out a Muggle newspaper then shoved it over to Severus, grinning.Eyes widening as he saw what Harry passed, Sirius said, tone wary, “Oh, bloody hell! It's a Muggle paper! We need to panic now!”“We do,” Remus agreed with a nod, though grinning.“Oh, come on!” Harry laughed. “We had fun last time I picked something Muggle. Even you two had a laugh with the go-cart races!” This was normal, so he wasn't taking it badly. Just part of what they did, especially since Remus and Sirius didn't know much about Muggle entertainment.“Well, yes, we did,” Remus admitted, smile growing. “However, you and Severus had more fun as you knew what you were doing when it came to navigating those carts. I'll withhold judgment until we know what it is you want to do.”“Just answer me this; does it involve the need for a helmet to protect myself?” Sirius asked with a grin, nudging Harry.“Naw, nothing dangerous,” Harry snickered, grinning himself.“It isn't,” Severus assured everyone with a pleased nod as he read what Harry had passed to him. Setting the paper down, looking around, he said, “Actually, it's highly educational, for all of us.” Seeing the looks from Sirius and Remus that were shot in his direction, he explained, “He wants to go to one of the Muggle museums to see the dinosaur exhibit they are having. I think I can speak for all of us when I say we'll find it enjoyable.”“I thought they were neat in that one movie I saw, Jurassic Park, so when I saw that mentioned, I really wanted to go see it,” Harry said, looking around, grinning a little sheepishly.Picking up the paper Severus had set down, Remus began to nod, smiling even bigger. “I agree. I think this will be fascinating! We'll see that then find somewhere nice to have lunch.” Putting the paper down, he said, “I like this idea, Harry.”“Yeah, this'll be interesting.” Sirius agreed with a nod. “I haven't seen anything like it before. And I'm in no danger of injury or being asked to dress in strange costumes. It's great!” He then laughed when Harry gave him a playful nudge.“Maybe, if we have time, we can go through the part of the museum they have about Egypt? Then you lot can explain to me how the Muggles see it differently. I know you've said they do, but I don't get the difference,” Harry said, looking between everyone.“We can easily do that,” Severus said with a firm nod. “In fact, we can spend as much time as you like there going through the whole museum. I don't think I'll hear any objection from any of us about that.” Hearing Sirius and Remus agree, he then added, “If you like this, maybe we can take some outings to a few of our museums to see if you like those. They aren't as big and impressive as the Muggle version, but I bet you'll find them fascinating.”“I didn't know our lot had museums,” Harry admitted. “Yeah, I think that would be something I'd like,” he told him with a nod. “Those kinds of things are interesting to go through.”“While Severus and I are in the alley picking up his ingredients, I'll grab a book on what's available. You can go through it to see what you think you'd like, then we'll plan from there,” Remus told him. “There are plenty around that I think you would find enjoyable.”“Okay,” Harry said with an enthused nod. Looking at Remus and Severus, he asked, “What is it you two are going to be doing while I'm being poked and prodded?”“We have an appointment with your Mind Healer to see if we can figure out some way to work with this mess,” Severus told him with a sigh then explained Narcissa's suggestion from the night before. “He had an opening this morning and agreed to squeeze us in.”Shaking his head, Remus explained, “We don't have high hopes that it will work, mind you, but we're going to try. Maybe with him involved and setting up a meeting, we might be able to get them to back off a little or see sense. We thought it was something Severus and I could handle alone.”“It's worth a shot,” Sirius admitted. Sighing, he said, “I'm not counting on it working though. We can only hope it does.”“I won't have to be involved, will I?” Harry asked, looking between the two.“No,” Severus told him with a firm shake of his head. “Just the two of us. We thought that if nothing else came of it, that us laying out just what you went through, without going into great detail, would make it to where when you do get a chance to confront them about the mess, it would have more of an impact.”“Works for me then,” Harry said with sigh. “The further they stay away from me, the better here.”“We're going to try, Harry,” Remus assured him quietly. Changing topics, not wanting to get too involved in that as it would just bring about all kinds of problems from Harry's end, Remus asked, “Now, tell me, how big are these dinosaurs? I've heard they rival dragons in size.”“Some are bloody massive,” Harry said. “In fact, they are bigger than dragons, at least from what I've seen in the books you showed me. Others aren't big at all. They are actually really small. It just depends on the dinosaur. The names are bloody confusing as hell, I'm warning you about that now.” Then he began to tell them what he knew about the creatures from movies and some books he had seen over the years.
Tossing the Prophet on the table, James put his head in his hands and sighed. This wasn't good, not at all. The reaming they got in the paper was horrific. Which just added to the nightmare that was already there. It wasn't going to help anything in the future either. He was worried about plenty here, not the least of which were his other kids. From what he read, the fact that they even had other kids caused an outrage at the paper. He knew what Hogwarts was like so he was sure Sarah and Jamie were now going to have problems with some of the students there over this mess. As he well knew, teens could be cruel. He was now sure that his children were going to be on the receiving end of some of it because of a decision he and Lily had made so long ago.
Lifting his head, he covered his mouth with his hands and just looked at the paper, not sure what to do. They had planned for so much when it became clear that Peter had betrayed them to the other side then planned to fake their deaths, but nothing, nowhere, could have prepared them for some of this, not to mention the acid being spewed in their direction from so many sides.Glancing across the table, he gave an internal sigh at the look on Lily's face. Honestly, she looked like she wanted to cry. In fact, she had spent most of the night doing that over so much of what was going on. When they had come back, Minerva and a couple other members of the old Order, not some of the big names that had been involved in the last war though, had still been here. Honestly? He wished they had stayed away longer because the blistering verbal barrage they were met with from Minerva was like being flailed alive, verbally. In school, he had been on the receiving end of the sharp edge of her tongue more than once, but it was nothing compared to what she did last night. Lily had been in tears not five minutes into it. Albus had been pale and shaking when they came in, having gotten more than an earful before they showed up. He—well, it hadn't been good. Thankfully, Albus had the forethought to send the kids to their rooms and put silencing charms up before everyone arrived. They sure as hell didn't need to hear what was said to the adults.Glancing at Albus, who was going through the mail they received as he was better able to detect what was dangerous and what wasn't, he asked, quietly, “Anything we need to know from that mess? Or is it just 'fan mail' we really don't want to read?”“That I've already vanished,” Albus said with a sigh, going through a thick stack of parchments from Hogwarts. Looking up, then between the two, he said, “Most of what's left isn't anything we need concern ourselves with. I'll go through it later as it's from some old contacts of mine about signs of Voldemort. This though—it's from Hogwarts, about enrolling Jamie and Sarah. We're going to have to send them a little early, from the sounds of it.” Shaking his head, he explained, “Though the transcripts from Argentina have reached the hands of Filius, along with our assurances that the two are trained in the areas where it differs from here, he's not budging on requirements. We have the choice to either send them early so they can go through remedial testing to see if they make it up to British standards and what they need to know, or take them to the Ministry for official testing to ensure they are in compliance. With what's going on now, I'm going to suggest sending them early. They should pass what's needed easily enough then can start classes. I think this is the easiest route to go with this area.”Shaking his head, looking down, James sighed, “Why am I not surprised that no one is going to take our word and signed statement for anything in this? Alright, we'll fill out what we need to and get them there. That means we're going to have to take a trip to Diagon Alley to pick up supplies.” Looking sour, he added, “And I'm definitely going in glamour to do that. There's no way in hell I'm chancing someone recognizing me at this time.”Reaching out and patting James' hand, Albus said, “We'll weather the storm, don't worry.”Looking at the paper, Lily sighed, swiping at her eyes, “I think we need to sit the kids down and warn them what might be coming with this. What's in that paper today is bad. They need to hear it from us rather than show up at school and get lambasted by it.”“Yeah, we do,” James said with a dejected look. “We also need to have a serious talk with Jamie about keeping his temper under control. This is going to affect him the worst when it comes to that. He needs to prepare and ignore it then move on.”Shutting her eyes, Lily shook her head then said, softly, “He's not going to listen. You know that, James. He listens about as well as you did at that age.”“I know,” James grumbled, looking exasperated. “We need to at least try. That and tell him who in the hell to steer clear of. There's going to be a big shock coming from the transfer for him. We know he did fine in Argentina, having plenty of friends. I'm not sure what's going to happen here and he needs to be prepared.”“There's also the fact that this is a boarding school and they can't come home when classes are over at the end of the day like they did in Argentina,” Lily sighed. “Both of them are going to have problems with that. They've never spent more than a couple of nights away from home.”“That too,” James said with a nod.“We'll work with it,” Albus soothed. “I'll fill out the paperwork and arrange for what's needed with this then see when we take them to the school. After that, we need to start worrying about finding a house and other things we need.”“We also need to see if we can find someone to watch Maggie while we do some of this. I know she's mature, but I don't want to leave her here alone as everything is so new,” Lily said softly. “I know we usually leave her with Bones, but the poor dog is stressed out as well.” Bones was Maggie's constant companion, a Great Dane she'd had for a couple of years now. The dog was very protective of her and wasn't about to let anything happen to their youngest, but with as new as this whole situation was, even the dog was a little strained with the circumstances.“We do,” James said. “Another problem on top of a mile long list of them. We also need to see what the hell is going on with Harry and how to work with that end of this disaster. A right mess, all of it.”“Let's take the bits we can work with, like the school and dealing with the kids. Once that's handled, we'll press on,” Albus said, passing the parchments from the school over to the two so they could fill out and sign what was needed. “I'll go out today to see what I can find on some areas then we'll deal from there. It'll work out in the end, don't fret.”Not so sure about that assurance anymore, James began to read and fill out what was required, wondering if this could get any worse.
Hearing the soft knock on the doorjamb of his lab, Severus glanced up and saw Harry standing there. Summoning two stools, he took a seat then motioned for the young man to come in. At the moment, he wasn't doing anything challenging, just making sure that a couple of the potions that took several days to brew were fine and working on a couple minor side projects he did on his own time.
Waiting for his son to take a seat, he asked, “What brings you down here, Harry?” Normally, Harry didn't come down to the lab as he was confused by so much that was there and didn't want to disturb anything by accident.“I just wanted to ask you a couple of questions if you weren't busy,” Harry asked softly, looking around, clutching onto the Prophet and a piece of parchment.“You're fine,” Severus assured him. “If I had been in the middle of something important, I would have put a sign up. Any other time, you're more than welcome to come down, even if it's just to sit and talk.” Crossing his legs, he asked, gently, “What did you want to ask about?”Setting the Prophet on the workbench, Harry looked at the family tree that Severus had made the night Lucius rescued him. Handing it over, he said, “It's about that.”Taking the parchment, Severus looked at it then said, quietly, “I didn't know you still had this.”“I kept it, though I don't know why. I think, maybe, it was something like proof that I wasn't just dropped on a doorstep by a junkie or that someone didn't want me. I don't know. It's just something I wanted to keep.” Harry explained the best he could.“I completely understand,” Severus told him, looking at his son. “What do you want to know about it?”“I've seen the tapestry Miss Cissy has up at Malfoy Manor, so I was wondering why this one didn't show that I had a brother and sisters or that the idiots weren't dead. Hers does. On here it just shows that they are my parents, nothing more.” Harry sighed, shaking his head. “I mean, if it had, it could have shown that something was off and we could have prepared in some way. I've been thinking about that for the last few days and wanted to ask.”Looking at the parchment, Severus sighed then said, softly, “I think, since this whole mess started, I've thought about that point more than once myself. I wish that I had done a more complex spell that would have shown such things. I didn't. All we were concerned with was finding out who your parents were.” Showing Harry the tree, he traced the outline from the top to the branch his family was on. “See how the other side of the tree is blank and most of the branches show only members that lead down to your parents?” When Harry nodded, he said, “That's because this didn't show the complete tree. The tapestry Narcissa has is far more complex and thorough when it comes to tracing family lines. The spell I used was never intended for that. It was very specifically geared to only trace to you and your parents, nothing more.”Now understanding, Harry looked at it, not sure what to say.“I'll say honestly that even if the DMLE had done the tree, they would have used the same spell I did. It was just a case of proving parentage and identity, nothing more. If it had been a matter where paternity was in question, we would have been showing different results.” Quietly, he then added, “I wish I had done that spell, Harry. For all of us now.”“It's not your fault,” Harry said softly. “You were just trying to find out who I was.” Looking down, he didn't know what to say.“If you would like, I can find the spell for a more complete one so you can frame it,” Severus offered.“I'm good,” Harry said. Quietly, he added, “It wouldn't show you and Remus as my dads anyway. That's all that matters, really.”Reaching up, Severus rubbed Harry's head gently then said, smiling just a little, “It is.” Putting the parchment on the workbench, he said, “Your family history gives you the past you never had. That doesn't mean they are family, though. Family is all of us around here. And that can't be recorded this way.”“It is,” Harry said, picking up the Prophet. Looking at it, he said, “I read this finally.” Stopping, he was silent for a few moments then asked, voice quiet, “Does it make me awful to like that everyone else seems as mad at them as I am?”“Not at all,” Severus told him with a snort. “If it did, all of us in this house would be just as guilty of it as you are. Though what is in that rag is sensationalized to draw readers and create outrage, the facts are correct. Plenty are righteously upset over what was done to you and this mess. And I'm sure that faction is going to feel the sting of it, rightfully so. It won't fix anything, we all know that, but it shows that they are in the wrong to you. In this case, I think that's all that matters.”Still looking at the paper, though not really reading it, Harry said, shaking his head, “Their other son is—she was pregnant with him when they dropped me on that doorstep. I don't know what to think about that.” Stopping, he shut his eyes and hung his head. “I'm so pissed about that, but it's more than just angry.”“You have every right to be,” Severus told him firmly, though his tone was gentle. “No one, anywhere, is going to blame you for being angry over it.” Sighing, he then added, “Just keep in mind that the circumstances of the three children's births isn't their fault, Harry, and it shouldn't be taken out on them. They didn't make that choice. James and Lily did. Don't judge them by that.”Thinking that over, Harry gave a nod, thinking he understood. Tossing the paper on the workbench, he said, tone confused, “I don't know what to think or do here. I'm just trying to sort through this nightmare and deal with it. Honestly? I didn't know coming down what I thought the answer to my questions would help. It's just—I wanted to know.”“It's just your mind's way of trying to figure out a mess. Let it, Harry,” Severus schooled. “It will, eventually, at least to an extent. It's something that will help you sort through and deal with what's there. Wanting answers to questions is always a good thing. And asking for them is even better when you can't figure it out. We're more than happy to provide them if we can.”“This mess isn't going away,” Harry observed, looking down at the floor. “I want it to, but it won't.”“No, it's here to stay and we have to deal with it. We're going to ensure you stay as far out of it as we can, however. Remember that.” Severus assured him, reaching out to give his shoulder a squeeze.Saying nothing for a minute or so, Harry then sighed and said, “I shouldn't read the paper. It was just—I wanted to know. Then I just get angry.”“And all that is fine as well,” Severus told him. “You're allowed to not only know what's going on, but be upset over it.”Nodding again, Harry slumped then said, “Tonight, when you aren't busy, can you help with a letter to Draco? I got an owl from him earlier. He asked a little about this mess and I don't know what to say here. I mean, I don't know how much he knows. And he mentioned that the rumor at the school is that two of the kids are going to start going there in a week or so. You're better at this bit than Sirius or Remus.”Understanding and agreeing with that, Severus told him, “We'll allot some time tonight to sit down and see what we can work out with it. If nothing else, I'll send for Lucius and he can help. He may know better what to say than I will.”“Alright,” Harry said. “'Cause I don't know where to even start with this mess with him.” Looking at his dad, he said, “I was wondering if there was something we could change around a little and arrange.” He really didn't want to talk any more about that topic and there was something he wanted to give a try anyway.“What's that?” Severus asked, curious.“You know how we were sitting around some nights and playing games or that, just the four of us, when we were waiting for this mess to play out?” Seeing his dad nod, he asked, “Can we pick a day of the week to just do that? Only the four of us? I really liked spending time together and just having fun. We can play cards or something like that. Muggle Uno is a lot of fun. I bet even Sirius and Remus would like that.” Quickly, he added, “It's not that I don't like going out with Sirius or having Lucius and Miss Cissy around, but I like spending time with you lot.”“We can do that,” Severus told him firmly with a smirk. “In fact, it would be most enjoyable. I'll get with Remus and we'll set up a day each week to have a night alone. I'm sure all of us will enjoy it. I can easily get some Uno cards and other games we can play.”“Good,” Harry said, grinning a little. “It'll be fun. Maybe order out then just sit and munch while we play.”“That sounds like a good itinerary,” Severus said, reaching out to ruffle Harry's hair. Figuring Harry was stressed and probably needed to relax, he said, “Now, while I have you here, I want you to try something for me.”Curious, Harry asked, brow furrowed, “What's that.”After telling him to wait right there, Severus stood then ladled something from one of the cauldrons into a beaker before handing it to him. “Tell me how that tastes.”Taking a sniff, smelling chocolate, Harry asked, “What is it? It doesn't smell nasty like most of your potions.”Smirking, Severus said, “I won't tell you until after you try it, but it's not a potion.” Lowering his voice, he said, “Trust me, you'll like it.”Looking at his dad, Harry then nodded and took a tentative sip. Eyes widening, he took a bigger drink then grinned. “That's bloody good! It tastes like hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows!”“Because that's what it is,” Severus said, sitting back down. “I'm trying a new recipe for it, so I needed a test subject.” Explaining, he said, “I have a way of powdering such concoctions that most places don’t know about so they taste like they are freshly made. So, what I do during the year is make batches of them up when I'm not busy, then store them to sell to shops over the holiday season. It earns me extra money for gifts.”Finishing what was in the mug, Harry asked, chuckling, “Which kind is it you make that has Remus making those strange orgasm-y noises? You know the ones. That he then drops his head on the table, moaning and shivering. He told me you make it only for special occasions.”Snorting, completely amused, Severus said, “It's triple fudge with caramel and whipped cream. I hold it back to use at times when I need a good chuckle. He's always so amusing when he drinks it. You know him and how he feels about chocolate.”“Yeah, he's a chocoholic! I've only seen him do that kind of thing with that drink, though.” Harry grinned.“I'm a very good cook,” Severus told him with a snort. Lowering his voice, he said, “My mother had recipes for it. I've taken those and experimented. Around the holidays, the one that has peppermint laced in it sells very well. I always make large amounts of that. Though Remus' favorite is right up there in popularity.” Looking over as the timer went off, Severus motioned for Harry to stand, “Come and help. I'll show you how to chop what I need while I stir. Acceptable?”Putting the beaker down, Harry stood then said, tone wary, “I'm not good at this, you know that.”“You'll do fine,” Severus told him with a dismissive wave. “It's nothing more than chopping. As you know how to handle a knife, I’m not concerned.” Leading his son over where he was working, Severus handed him the silver knife then showed him how to roughly chop what was there. When Harry was going good, he went to stirring, talking while he did. Harry didn't often come down to his lab, so he was going to take advantage of the situation and impart some basics. Plus, honestly, he liked spending time with his son alone and just talking. Quietly, once Harry was working well, he asked, “How did it go at the Healer? Anything we need to worry about?”“Naw, all's good there,” Harry said, paying close attention to what he was doing. “He was just making sure he mapped out where the scars were so they can get rid of them next week. It's just the idea where they're going to be taking them off from is all.”Shivering and shaking his head, Severus sighed, “I can only imagine. Working in the genital area would be nerve-wracking. However, it's best they get rid of them for you, for more than just aesthetic reasons. Once this one's over, there’s only one left and you're done.”“Yup,” Harry nodded. “He said they're getting the one over my heart this time. That'll be the last of the external ones. Can't say I'll miss that one, though, for a long time it was something that helped me back off idiots and made me look tough.”“I understand completely,” Severus said, nodding. “Are you frightened by this round or just nervous?” As Harry had been through this before, he assumed there was no fear, but it always best to have him talk it out so he was more relaxed on the topic.“Not scared, no, since I know what's coming. Just unnerved. He said I'll be out that night like last time,” Harry said, then went on to detail what the Healer told him.
Looking up as Sirius stepped into the kitchen, Remus asked, “Is Harry okay? He looked plenty upset after reading the paper.”
“He's good,” Sirius said, taking a seat at the table and summoning a butterbeer. “He's actually down in the lab with Snape. They're talking while Harry is chopping ingredients. When I poked my head in, they were discussing the dinosaurs.”Pleased with that, Remus nodded, “Good. Whatever was bothering him he must have gone to Severus about.”“He's fine now. They must have talked it out because he seemed completely relaxed. Snape is good with some of this and Harry,” Sirius said, taking a sip of his drink.“He is,” Remus said with a smile. “And the students at Hogwarts would never believe he was either! They would think Imperious.”Laughing at that, Sirius nodded, “True! Or he had a personality transplant.”“He's happier now, that's part of it,” Remus said quietly. “He likes to brew, but not teach. This is perfect for him. I don't think he would ever have given it a go if it wasn't for Harry. Somewhere in him, I think he was sure he wouldn't make it if he struck out on his own. That helps. Then there is the part where he is Harry's dad. That helps more than anything else. He never thought he would be a father, let alone to a son who has more problems than most know how to deal with. He is though. And a good one. That demeanor of his where he's not easily shocked and can hide his emotions has helped tremendously in this situation. The more Harry responded to him, the easier it was to show that side only I used to get to see.” Lowering his voice, he added, smiling, “And he adores Harry as much as Harry does him. Severus never had anyone that needed and adored him like Harry does. That helps more than anyone will ever know.”“I'll admit to having my doubts when you two took this on,” Sirius said honestly. “You, I wasn't worried about. Between the two of us, we could manage, I knew that. It was Snape I was wondering about, what with his personality. I don't anymore. Merlin help anyone if they try something moronic with Harry. We'd just have pieces to hex when he was done with them.”“Very true,” Remus grinned. “Alright, other than Mind Healer appointments, do we have anything else to do this week?”“I think we're good, actually,” Sirius said. “I can't think of anything anyway. In fact, other than the normal appointments, the only thing coming up is the surgery next week. I'm sure something's going to poke its head up here, but we aren't pressed for anything. So, I was thinking about seeing if we can do a few more outings like we did today. Maybe not the same thing, but get Harry out with all of us. Maybe Diagon Alley or something to just wander around. I don't know. Find something to do. Maybe take him over to the manor for a bit so he can fly. Get him to focus on something besides this mess.”“That's a good plan,” Remus admitted with a nod. “We'll put our heads together to see what we can find. I don't think Severus is that busy. Let's see if he has any suggestions or Harry has something he'd like to do. The museum was fun today. Maybe he knows a few more things like that he wants to try.”Scratching his chin, Sirius thought it over then said, “What say we see about taking him to the Tower of London? That's not something we've done yet. We can do both the Muggle and Wizarding tours. I bet he'd like that.”“Good suggestion,” Remus said, pleased. “I would like to do the Muggle tour myself to see how it differs. Let's see what those two say then go from there.”
