Chapter 8
Coming into the kitchen, still rubbing his eyes and in his pajamas, Draco was startled to see Sirius and Remus there, both looking wide awake. Normally, those two slept a little later than he and his parents did. His father, because of business, was an early riser, something that carried over to him and his mother.
Taking a seat, he looked around then asked, concerned, “Is something wrong?” No one appeared worried or anything, but that's all he could think of to explain the other two being up.“Nothing to worry about,” Sirius said, taking a sip of his coffee. “Rufus is here talking to Harry. This is the only time he could manage it. So we had to get up at the butt-crack of dawn to do it, as Snape, Minerva and Poppy will be over this afternoon. Minerva wasn't supposed to come over until the weekend to do this, but Poppy needs to check Harry over to start him on the new potion, so she's tagging along. Which means, we have to get this bit done before she gets here.”Now understanding, Draco just nodded then took his food and drink from an elf. After a sip of juice, he asked, quietly, “Do you think there is something they can come up with that he'll like to do?”“Actually, yes,” Lucius told his son as he sipped his tea. “Alastor said that there are plenty of jobs in the DMLE Harry can do. They just normally aren't mentioned in career counseling. Mostly, from what he told us, it has to do with the fact that once people hear Auror, that's their focus because it's so high-profile and well-respected. He also pointed out something we didn't know; that there are plenty of ex-Aurors on staff at the DMLE that can't do that job anymore because of injuries and physical limitations they suffered in the line of duty. He assures us that if it's something Harry wants to do, they'll find something he'll like.”“That's good then,” Draco nodded as he ate. Softly, he added, grinning, “Because, though History is fascinating, it's not a heavily in demand career, unless you want to write or something.”“There are some things, but it's a limited field,” Lucius admitted. He was about to explain some of it, when the door opened and Moody came in, artificial leg thunking heavily on the floor.Holding the door open for Harry, who was followed by Rufus, he actually looked pleased. Glancing at the table, he said, “We have something. It's going to be odd, but he'll like it and it's something the Ministry desperately needs. Hell, it has for years.”“What did you pick?” Sirius asked when Harry finally sat down by him, cane now resting on the bench.Taking a seat by Lucius, gratefully accepting a cup of tea from an elf, Rufus looked around with a small smile then said, “It's going to cause some problems for you lot as some of what he needs to study I doubt you know. You'll muddle through. That and we're going to have to get one of the Hogwarts teachers in here once a week to take on the one, as none of you are qualified to teach it, beyond the theory anyway.”Now intrigued, Remus asked, “Oh really? What is it?”
“Harry wants to go into Defensive Spellcrafting and Forensic Investigation,” Rufus told him, looking happy. “Neither are areas that are affected by what limitations he has. And, truthfully? We desperately need someone that specializes in these areas. We've never had someone train to specialize in them. In fact, if we need someone, we have to get them from the States for a time. They have programs to train for it and they are popular. There are a few ex-Aurors that have gone into some of the areas, something that does help, but never any that took on the whole thing. It's perfect, for all of us.”Impressed, Sirius looked at his godson and grinned, “Good! What made you pick that?”“I like the idea. I had no clue that the Ministry or DMLE even had jobs like that. There are plenty of Muggle crime TV shows and movies that deal with this kind of thing. I really liked to watch those. It was the same with reading books about it. So, when he told me about it, that’s the one I wanted to do.”“We need to do a better job of getting these options out to students so we can get people in the areas we need,” Rufus said, looking around. Pressing on, he explained, “Moody will bring over the pamphlet with the official requirements that Harry needs. Most he's actually already taking, like Charms, Transfiguration and Defense. We're going to need History in this, though not the standard course.” Looking at Lucius, he asked, “You were going to take that topic on with him?”“I was,” Lucius said with a nod, intrigued.“You can handle this then. It's going to be different than what you know, probably, but you'll manage. He needs criminal history. There are several good texts out there on it. Moody will bring you the list. You can then go from there. His OWL grade won't affect that as this isn't related and not taught at Hogwarts.”“I'll manage,” Lucius said with a pleased smirk. “It's not an area I know, so I'll learn something as well.”“I'll come in and help too,” Moody told him, sipping from his flask. “I do know it and have plenty of books he can use for essays. As much as I'm over here, it won't be a bother.”
“He also needs the basic two-year course for Spellcrafting,” Rufus told them. “You lot can take the theory, but we need someone certified in it to come in and do the practical. There's a teacher at Hogwarts that can easily do it.” Giving a dry chuckle, he added, “And I'm sure he'll love doing it as well.”
“Who's that?” Remus asked, slightly wary as the only one that he could think of would be Filius. As the man wasn't attached to the Order, they would have to be wary about some things.“Snape,” Rufus told him, looking pleased. “He's been certified for years and has never had the opportunity to teach it.”“I bet he would love it,” Lucius said with a nod.“Our suggestion is to have Draco sit in on the classes as well,” Moody added. “He doesn't necessarily have to do the homework for it, but he'll pick up many things he can use later.”“Hell, I want to! I got the basics in Auror training, but that's all. It can only help in many ways,” Sirius said honestly, looking at his old boss.“It's a good course for everyone to take,” Rufus admitted. “Hogwarts just doesn't have the bodies to teach it is all. The theory you'll all be fine with as that's easy. Let Snape come up with the syllabus and follow that. As long as Harry gets at A in all of it, we'll get him into the training program. I doubt that'll be a problem with what I know of his grades in classes taught by those that are actually competent. The only issue is that the training program is two years long, something he said he doesn't have a problem with. Then you intern for two more. So, he can find another job of some kind, or do something else, while he trains. We can even help him do that if he wants. There are plenty of positions in the DMLE he can take on that will actually help him learn part of it.”“I'll get the pamphlet over here this morning. That'll be all Minerva needs to set everything up officially. Then she can work with Snape to arrange the classes. Once she does that, it'll be official and Albus can get him out of the castle to teach.” Moody said. “I'll be around enough that I can give you a hand in whatever you need with it. He can give me what he wants to do and I'll go from there.”Clapping his godson on the back, Sirius said, pleased, “Good damned choice, Harry!”
Looking at the pamphlet in her hands, Minerva's eyes were wide. Giving a pleased nod, she looked at Harry and asked, “You're sure about this?”
“It's what I want,” Harry told her softly. “I can do it, too. Even if some of this never goes away.”“We'll set it up, Mr. Potter,” she said, a pleased expression on her face. She had been at a loss as to what to refer Harry to as a career, even though she had been told that he was interested in History. This was good. Plus, it was the first time she had seen him awake. That alone made her happy, especially since he appeared to be doing very well, better than she expected.Pushing some of the official paperwork over to her, Moody said, “That's what you need to fill out. Part goes to the Ministry, something I'm sure you can handle. The other parts are what he needs and to officially sign off for Snape to come in once a week to teach the odd class.”Having been conferring with Poppy on the potions Potter needed, as there were now so many they were worried about them counteracting each other, Snape's head came up and he looked at the table, brow furrowed. “What's that? What class?”Looking at the paperwork, Minerva said, distractedly, “They need you to come in once a week to teach one class as you're the only one qualified to take it on.”Eyes widening, knowing the only other subject that might be, Severus excused himself from Poppy and swept over. Taking the paper Minerva held out, he looked at it then began to smirk, pleased, “Spellcrafting. Yes, I can easily do this.” Looking at Potter, he gave a short nod. He had been dying to teach this class for some time, but no one had chosen to go into a career that needed it.“Draco wants to sit in on the classes as well, though not do so officially,” Lucius told Severus. “Black, Lupin and I would like to as well, once you start practical. It may be something we know, but we figure we can learn plenty that can only aid us.”“Not an issue,” Severus told him firmly, looking quite pleased. “I'll start working on the syllabus and what you need. I also need to find a suitable text to use. I should have it in a matter of days then will pass it to Minerva to get it to the Ministry so it's official.”“I have plenty on it,” Moody told him, sipping from his flask. “I'll provide the books for essays and such.” Looking at Minerva, he said, “I can for other areas as well. I grabbed the recommended book list for some of the classes as the history and this one aren't normally covered.”“We'll handle this,” Minerva said with a nod. Looking at Lucius, she asked, “You're not going to have a problem with teaching the History part?”“I may not know it, but it should be easy enough to take on. Alastor said he would come in and help if I hit a trouble spot. He can also provide all the research materials we may need for it.”“I'll set this up then and we'll go from there. Once I get back to the school, I'll send the official paperwork off.” She said, signing her name on the sheet provided. Looking at Harry, she asked, “You're aware of the extra training this takes? It's four more years, beyond what most training takes for a job.”“I am,” Harry told her firmly. “That was explained to me and I don't have a problem with it. It's the same amount of time it would take if I went to Muggle uni, so it's not a big deal.”“I just wanted to make sure you knew,” Minerva said. Lowering her voice, she added, “I think this is a good career choice for you, Mr. Potter. It's one you can do without a problem, even if you still have health issues by the time it comes to start. And I think it's something you'll enjoy.”Smiling, Harry said, “I think it's fascinating. And I wanted to take it the minute I heard about it.”“It's a good choice,” Minerva told him, gathering the papers together.“Just a suggestion, for both you and Snape,” Alastor said, looking between the two. “Once career counseling hits, get with me and I'll get you some of these pamphlets. There is plenty here that isn't usually covered. Harry told me he wasn't aware some of these jobs were even available. He had a hard time choosing between a couple of them because he liked several of the options. With what's going on and what's to come, the Ministry needs plenty of people in these areas. They aren't the high-profile of the Auror, but they are needed and damned good jobs to take.”“Get them to me,” Minerva said with a firm nod. “I’ll make sure they are passed out when the time comes, because I wasn’t even aware this job existed. Mr. Potter isn't the only one that would like to go into an area like this. It'll also give so many others an option for careers if they can't get into some.” Standing up, she moved over to the other side of the table to fill out some of the paperwork and to confer with those there about who was taking on what when it came to teaching.Taking a seat by the young man, looking at the list she and Severus had come up with, Poppy said, “We're adding a potion in to prevent headaches. It's a strong one too, I'm warning you now. However, it's going to take a couple of weeks to get into your system. So, we're going to add in another potion if you get another one. This is also stronger than what we gave you before, so it shouldn't take as many doses to end it.”“I don't want to go through that ever again,” Harry admitted with a shake of his head. “That was bad.”
“Migraines are horrific to deal with,” Poppy told him with a sigh. “Pay attention to the symptoms. They may not always be exactly the same, but you'll get some of them all the time. Once those show, start taking the medicine for them. It may hold it off or make it to where it isn't as bad. Don't play with these. They are incredibly painful.” Looking at Narcissa, she said, “Let him come to you to explain what he's feeling. If you've had these and know the foreshadowing, you can help.”
“I will,” Narcissa told her softly.
“Don't wait to start taking the potions. Then go do what you did before. I'll leave a list of things that can help if it starts. Use those to see what works for you. Not everything is the same for everyone.” Poppy said, then began asking questions about what he was taking and any improvements they might be seeing.
Turning away from the scene in the backyard, Narcissa put her hand over her face, shut her eyes and muttered, “I can't watch this!”
Snorting, amused, Lucius patted her on the shoulder. “I don't think it's anything to worry about, Narcissa. Harry is flying, yes, and using a Beater's bat, but Sirius is on the broom with him. If anything calamitous looks like it's going to transpire, he can easily take control and get them to the ground. He also has a helmet on.”“If he re-injures his head, it's going to make all the problems worse,” she huffed, not able to turn around and watch what was going on. “Why Sirius would even think this is a good idea is beyond me!”“Harry could easily do the same thing falling down the stairs or any number of common household accidents,” Remus said softly, watching the two young man swatting the Quaffle back and forth, smiling. “As agile as he is, not to mention his quick reflexes, he's not going to allow himself to get hurt. The only injuries he's had in the sport are from outside interference. Those were things he couldn't avoid. Plus, Draco isn't going to do anything to intentionally cause him harm. He knows what the situation is. They are just having fun. I have a feeling it'll be good for both of them since they can't play on the house teams anymore.”Sputtering, Narcissa huffed, not sure what to say. After a couple of moments, she asked, “What's going to happen if he has a seizure while in the air?”“That would be bad, yes,” Remus admitted with a nod. “We can make sure both of them know that they can't come out and do this alone. That way we can keep an eye on what goes on. If there are any signs one is coming, as we've seen those by now, we can get him on the ground before it happens. You need to keep in mind that even with us being vigilant before, he injured himself plenty when he had one. This is the same kind of thing. Sirius and I, both, made sure that helmet is padded the best we can get it. He's going to be fine.”“While I understand the reason you're concerned, I agree with Remus,” Lucius told his wife softly, while watching those in the air. “Nothing in our world is risk-free. We can't take away every problem area. I'm actually more concerned about the flashing spells than this when it comes to triggering something. Some of those may cause greater issues, something we all need to be wary of. This—I don't see the harm if we take precautions. Besides, it's not like they are playing a serious, competitive game. They are just having fun. Draco, as we can all easily see, is holding back and not doing anything that would cause an injury. Let them have fun.”“Narcissa, Harry knows what he's doing on a broom,” Remus reassured her quietly as he watched, smiling slightly. “He's lost so much of what he used to be able to do without a problem. I don't see letting him get something back he adores is wrong. He knows what the problems are and how serious this is. I very much doubt he's going to pull something foolish that might result in him making what's bad already worse.”Huffing, Narcissa lowered her hand and peeked over her shoulder at what was going on. Sirius was on the broom with Harry, keeping a tight hold on him and watching carefully. Harry, though swinging the bat, wasn't doing anything dangerous. Even Draco, though obviously having fun, wasn't doing what she knew he was capable of. Shaking her head, she sighed, “I understand. Just make it clear to all three of those 'children' that they shouldn't do this alone.”“We will,” Remus assured her, smiling bigger. “Sirius won't let them, you know that.”“And Merlin help all of you if Molly sees that you're allowing this. I refuse to help you reattach body parts or undo the spells she uses!” Narcissa told them.
Grinning at his godfather as they sat in the room they shared, Harry said, “That was fun! It felt good to do that again. Especially since I didn't know if I could or not.”
Sipping his beer, Sirius said, grinning himself, “I figured you'd like it.” Shaking his head, he added, “I didn't see any reason you couldn't. Most of what's wrong won't affect you mucking about. Hell, you could probably still play as long as you keep an eye out and duck Bludgers. It just took you some time to adjust to the trembling and let your broom get used to it, nothing more. Besides, it'll give you and Draco something to do. Just—for the sake of me not getting hexed within an inch of my life, don't even think about going out without one of us with you. Probably more than one if I'm out there with you, as Cissy doesn't see me as anything but a large child anyway. She will come unglued all over all of us. Cissy in full temper is not a pretty thing, trust me there!”Laughing, Harry agreed, “I can do that. No problem.” Sobering up, he said, quietly, “It's nice to know that I can still do something I love when I can't do so many other things anymore, at least not without big problems. It was something I thought I couldn't do anymore because of the danger of so much.”Moving over and taking a seat by Harry, Sirius slipped an arm around him then held him close. “There is no reason you can't still do some of it. It might be more of a challenge, yeah, but you still can. Some—no, you can't. It may get to a point where you can once you work with part of this, but not at the moment. All that means is you just have to find other things you like or can do, nothing more. With as limited as your exposure to our world is now, you'll eventually find more once you learn all that's out there. Just give it some time.”“I can do that,” Harry nodded, sipping at his butterbeer. “I just know what I've picked up at school. Maybe a little beyond that. So, there's a lot I don't.”“We'll work on that. There's plenty out there you'll like,” Sirius told him. Grinning, he nudged Harry then said, “From the message we got from Minerva earlier with the paperwork, we're gathering Snape is actually in a wonderful mood. Well, for him anyway. She said he only gave warnings tonight instead of detentions. From what she wrote, it's because he finally gets to teach Spellcasting. You performed a miracle, Harry!”Laughing, Harry shook his head. “Him in a good mood is going to scare people!”“Probably,” Sirius admitted with a grin. “Which is funny anyway. Oh, the looks on so many faces has to be a riot!” Looking at the time, he said, “Alright, let's get you your snack so you can take all that rancid tasting shite. We'll find something to do after that.” Seeing Harry nod, he sent for the elves then began to discuss what they wanted to do to keep themselves busy until bedtime.
