Chapter 8
Hermione was apprehensive as they sat in Dumbledore's office. She, Ron and Ginny were in there with Mr. and Mrs. Weasley as well as Professor McGonagall. Wringing her hands, she wondered what this was about. The only thing her mind was skipping to was something horrible had happened to someone they all knew. Wracking her brain, she tried to figure out what it was and who could be involved. There were so many to worry about anymore because of the lists of deaths in the Prophet each day.
Looking around, Albus said, softly, keeping a reassuring tone, “What we need to talk to you about is Harry and the situation there.” Seeing some of the apprehension slide off their faces, he told them, “We're going to tell you a little of what is going on with that end and what we know. I'm also going to be honest in that we don't know everything because they won't tell us everything. I believe I understand why they won't, something I won't delve into.” Seeing nods, he then pressed on to give a brief overview of what Arthur learned from Remus.Leaning back in his chair, he looked at the three students, sighing at their confused and somewhat horrified looks. Shaking his head, he told them, “There is no chance of undoing what James Potter did all those years ago. All the three of them have is to work with what is there now. They've found a solution to negate the worst effects of the spell, but it can't do away with all the troublesome bits. What's left they are working with the best they can. They need time to do that. For now, Sirius and Harry aren't what you remember. They are dealing with the aftermath of not only what they put in place to negate the worst of the effects, but coming back from the dead after a year. Remus got in contact with Arthur this morning via owl. For now, he's going to answer your letters to Harry.” Hearing all three start to speak, he held up his hand, “For now, this is best. Harry doesn't want to cut off contact with you, but, from what was said, he's in no shape to handle so much at the moment. So, Remus is going to handle the correspondence until Harry gets in a place where he can do it again.”Shifting in his chair, he leaned his elbows on the edge of the desk and looked at his students. Softly, he said, “He's also going to tell you when you step into an area they won't talk about. I think it's best to confine your letters to things like current events, what's going on with you and light topics. What Harry is dealing with has to be hard. We know a bit more than you do about what is going on. We won't pass it along because it's highly personal and not something we feel you need to hear. The only reason some of this was explained to Arthur was to give us some insight into just what happened and why. Remus even made it very clear that they won't ever reveal some of what happened. That is to protect themselves. Keep that in mind when you write to Harry.”Sighing softly, he shook his head then said, looking at Hermione, “We need you to curtail your normal impulses to look into the situation. I know your quest for knowledge is something we usually encourage because it's helped immensely in many matters. This time we need you to leave it alone. If you don't, you're apt to set off a chain of events that won't lead to anything good and may endanger all three of them. It's also been made very clear that if you do continue it will be Sirius you'll be answering to. As Arthur can easily tell you, that's not something you want to do. Sirius isn't what you remember him to be at the moment. Setting him off or riling him isn't a good thing until he can get a handle on what he's dealing with.” Stopping, he waited, looking at Hermione.Wringing her hands, Hermione looked at the Headmaster then nodded. “I won't.”“We mean it, Hermione,” Arthur said softly. Shaking his head, he said, “This is—no, you need to leave it alone. What is there made me uncomfortable in some areas, though it's nothing any of the three did, just the situation. It's not something you need to know until Harry's in a place he can handle it then he will talk to you about it. The rest, frankly, isn't our business. All you need to know is what we told you.” Glancing at Albus, he added, “I doubt anyone, anywhere, could do anything more than the three of them did to fix the situation.”“There is nothing we could have done,” Albus sighed, giving a sad shake of his head. “They did all they could.”Shoulders slumping, Hermione nodded, “I'll leave it alone, I promise.”Taking that for what it was, Albus nodded. Eyes sliding to Ginny, who was pale and shaking, he softened his tone then said, “Ginny, I do understand there is a crush there when it comes to Harry, but it's not possible to fulfill that now. It's also not going to come in the future. I'm sorry. This was out of everyone's hands. We need you to drop the hints you're making to Harry. In this case, you'll set off not only Sirius, who isn't in any shape to deal with it, but also Remus. He made it very clear in his letter to your father that it was bothering him as well. Remus is not affected nearly as bad as Sirius in the matter, but it needs to stop. Harry is your friend. Leave it at that. Pushing for anything more will just ensure that you deal with Remus and Sirius, both, on the matter.”Eyes welling with tears, Ginny nodded, twisting her robes with one hand. “There is no chance of breaking the bond? Ever?”“No, there isn't. This one is unbreakable. By the time Harry met Sirius and Remus, it was already too late to do anything about it. I'm sorry,” he told her gently. Looking between the three, he said, “What Harry needs from all of you is what you are; his friends. That's all. You've been through a lot together since you started school. It's time that you just be a friend and talk to him like that. Leave everything else out unless he asks. Don't mention the war to him. It'll be probably be a couple of months before they can even venture into public to do anything. They don't need bombarded with things they can't do anything about. Arthur is going to keep them abreast of what we feel they have to know, things that aren't in the papers, but there is nothing they can do about any of it. They need left alone to adjust to so much. Don't take umbrage if he sounds different or that Remus is the one answering. That is just Harry trying desperately to adjust to so much and work with what's been thrown at him and what he's dealing with. That's all. Remus assured Arthur that, in time, the Harry you all knew will be back. However, I can easily tell you that it's doubtful that he will go back to doing what he used to do. He has two people with him now that are involved heavily. That's going to factor in.”“Most of all, keep this in mind; Harry has two people with him that won't hurt him, ever. They will adore him in a way I doubt anyone in the world ever has. He is safe and protected at the moment, in no danger. And keep in mind that Remus and Sirius are very capable of defending Harry against almost anything. It may not be what any of them wanted, but it won't be a situation that they will be miserable with. Arthur can easily attest to that from some of what he saw,” Albus told them with a smile then looked at Arthur, who was nodding.“Harry isn't what you remember him as right now, but he's not miserable,” Arthur told them softly. “It's just hard on them all from what I was told. We just need you to heed what Albus said and not cause them more problems than what they are already dealing with. That won't help anything. There is much here he has to get a handle on before that can happen. That's all this is. He's not cutting you off, I promise. You just need to give him time. Nothing more than that.”Seeing nods, though the three looked confused and upset, Albus pressed on. “As you go home tomorrow, I want to impart something to you. I know Draco Malfoy is an issue with all of you. We're well aware of what he's been saying and trying to cause fights. As I'm sure you've heard, he's confined to dorms until the train ride to stave off issues. I'm sure, because of something we did, he's going to be very angry. What we need from you, and you can pass it along to those close to you, is if he starts with you or the ones that are close to him do, get with one of the Aurors that will be on the train. Don't let him provoke you into a fight. You'll know a couple of them from the Order. Tell them and they'll handle the situation. We have already set something up with them to deal with it. Just ignore it the best you can. Tonks and Kingsley will be two on the train and they know to keep a close eye on the compartment you're in for such antics. Let them handle whatever happens.” Seeing nods, he leaned back and asked, “Any questions?” He didn't expect any, all he hoped was they would take what he said to heart because they didn't want to have to take more drastic measures with the situation.
“Alright, what do we need to know when it comes to this mess?” Sirius asked, gesturing to the parchments littering the kitchen table. Remus had everything gathered up and in piles of what was what. As he and Harry were letting Remus handle this, the man was going to have to fill them in for now. Later on they could help. Right now—it was better this way.
Looking around at the piles, Remus sighed then said, “Let's take the easiest one first; Harry's friends.” Seeing nods from both Sirius and Harry, he pressed on. “Arthur says that Albus is going to handle that end of the mess and talk to them. It's their hope that having him doing so will put an end to any foolishness with Hermione and Ginny. Ron's not a problem, honestly, and will probably listen. If it continues I'm supposed to let Albus know and he'll deal with it accordingly.”“I'm not counting on it working,” Harry sighed, shaking his head then taking a sip of his milkshake.“If it doesn't, I have no problem going to Albus for him to take it on,” Remus told him firmly, patting his leg.“It's going to be fine until you stop answering and I take over,” Harry sighed, shrugging. “If it does, I don't have a problem passing it off to you to handle.”“We'll go about it that way,” Sirius assured him, slipping an arm around Harry then taking a drink of his butterbeer. “What else? That's a mass, so I assume there is plenty more.”“Most of it aren't things we need concern ourselves with, honestly,” Remus told him. “It's just updates on the war and what's going on, things that don't make the papers. Albus just wants us aware of what's going on so we know what to look out for or to prepare for when we go back out in public. That's all. Frankly, I like that as it keeps us abreast of what we need to know about to protect ourselves.”“Yeah, true,” Sirius conceded with a nod. “Alright, what do we need to worry about or know?”“First off, Albus said he took it upon himself to send the readings and what was needed to the Ministry. That way none of us are looked at too closely for doing anything Dark. From what his letter said, he made sure it went to the right places and won't leak out. Rufus will know, but it's something that will be sealed. He said this way, when we do go back out in public, we won't have issues with the Ministry. I believe that was probably the right thing to do as he sent along his research on the topic to back up my readings.” Stopping, he looked at the other two to see what they had to say.Nodding slowly, Sirius told him, “Works for me. I have no issue with it. The less problems, the better we're going to be. What else is there?”“He also took it upon himself to ensure that Harry is registered as bonded, though we'll do another one when you can both handle it, so that he's now considered a legal adult and can do magic with no repercussions. That we do need and didn't consider. I think, from what I read, it should have broken the Trace, both you dying and the bond, but official is better,” Remus told them.“Good,” Harry sighed. “We don't need problems with the Ministry over that.”“When the time comes, he said he would do the bonding, if we want. He said when you think you can handle having him around, he'll do it. That way we don't have to brave the Ministry and who all might be there, to do this. I think, honestly, this is a better way to go about it. We're going to have to deal with the Ministry for a couple of things, but I can do them by owl. He also imparted that it might be best to do it quickly. It will help, something we do know. From what he said, he'll come in and stay only long enough to do that if that's what we want.” Stopping, he waited to see what the two said.Scratching his chin, thinking it over, Sirius then looked at Harry, who was looking back at him, before giving a slow nod. “This might be the way to go with it. We know doing that will stabilize what's going on to a degree. Tell him we’ll take him up on that when we can manage.”“I will,” Remus told him with a firm nod, jotting that down on a blank piece of parchment. “Next, he's offering to have Severus brew the Wolfsbane and ensure its delivered. He also promises that he won't say anything off or cause problems if he does.”“No,” Sirius snarled, that sheen in his eyes coming back full force. “No Snape. I don't give a shite if Albus has him on a leash. I do not want him here. Albus may say he won't, but we know that arse. He can't help himself and will have to either snark or make loaded comments. I cannot handle that. And if he starts on Harry about anything it's going to unleash hell, for all of us. Just tell him it's not needed.” Pulling Harry to him, he held him close, fingering the collar around his neck as he shut his eyes and tried to get his temper under control.“I will, don't worry, Sirius. Just calm down,” Remus soothed, making that note as well. “I'll also tell him that Severus is one that needs to stay far away until you're in a place that you can handle it better. I do agree that having him come over isn't wise. He's going to set not only you off, but me as well, we both know it. I'm going to mention that as well because, I agree, he won't keep it to himself.”Breathing deeply to keep himself under control, Sirius nodded. Quietly, he asked, “What else?”“He's asking, in the future when you both can handle it better, to use the house again for Order meetings. They have something set up, obviously, but this would be better for it,” Remus told him, looking in his direction.Giving a dry snort, Sirius then grinned, “Only if he wants to buy it.”“You're serious about selling it then?” Remus asked, knowing that was one of the plans Sirius had while they sorted through the mess after the binding.“Dead arse serious,” Sirius told him with a firm nod. “You did wonderful in fixing it up and it's comfortable now in a way it's never been, but there are too many memories here for me. No, I want us to have a place that doesn't invoke what this one does; one we can call our own. We'll find something then fix it up how we want.”Smiling a little and nodding, Remus told him, “I completely understand. And I like the idea, honestly. I'll send for some catalogs of what's available from Gringotts so we can see what's out there. We can always buy it ahead of time and start work on it, using elves, of course.” Looking back at him, he asked, “How much of your plan do you want to enact, Sirius? I know there was a lot there when we started discussing it.”“I don't know still. Some of it—it has to wait until I'm in better shape to decide. Others I know. We're going to officially merge the houses of Black and Potter. That I do know. I'm also going to set up a proxy to handle the duties of both for now. It's going to take time before I can do it, that's for damned sure. So, I'm going to see what I can manage with that. It has to wait for a while until this settles. It's going to give the right side in this mess some leverage, that I know because both seats on so much have been inactive since the first war.”“It will and it's a way to help without us being involved,” Remus said with a firm nod.“It's also going to help us in many ways with the Ministry and give some backing to changing some laws that do need changed,” Sirius admitted. “I want to stay out of the war if we can. That I don't know if we can manage, honestly. I'm sure, at some point, we're going to get dragged in though I don't want to be, but we can help a little. This will do that.”“It will and it's a good idea,” Remus told him honestly. “The rest?”Shaking his head, Sirius told him, “I have to wait on that. It's too—no, now's not the time because of so much here. Give it a couple of months then we'll talk again.”Pleased with that, Remus nodded, knowing some of what Sirius was capable of doing as head of the House of Black would focus the other side on them and cause an uproar. Pressing on, he said, “Albus says that when you two can handle it, we need to take Harry to see his family.” Seeing both of them look at him, he held up his hand and said, “Just to drive home that Harry's back and with him being back they are in danger. The Order is trying to help them, but they don't want to listen. From what Albus said, it should just take a short visit to drive it home.”Shaking his head, Harry said, softly, “That's a very bad idea, for many reasons. Even when we're in a better place, anything my family has to say is going to set both of you off.”“I know,” Remus told him with a sigh and shake of his head. “I do get why he's asking, though. It's probably the only thing that's going to drive the point home to them.”“It's one we're not even going to discuss until we're in better shape,” Sirius told him firmly. “What could come of that encounter wouldn't be pretty, even on a normal day before this whole mess happened. Tell him we'll think about it.”“I will,” Remus nodded as he made a note of that. Jumping to the next topic, he said, “Albus is looking for something to see if he can help ease what's going on. He said he might be able to find a few things we can try. Nothing that would have a backlash, of course, more like cut down the time we have to stay holed up and stabilize the both of you.” Looking between the two, he said, “It's something we may want to consider if he does find it. He knows what he's doing in that area.”“We'll consider it if he can come up with something,” Sirius nodded.“Next, he says, to hold off problems for you, to register your animagus form. He sent along the paperwork to do that. As it can be done by owl, it's easy enough. It's probably a good idea, Sirius. So many know about Padfoot that it's going to slip out. We may as well do it right to hold off problems,” Remus suggested, looking at him.“Yeah, we'll do that,” Sirius nodded. “Wait until after the full moon and I'll do the paper work for it.” With that he grinned a little, looking at Harry who was grinning as well.Eyebrow arched at the looks there, Remus wondered what that was about. Shaking his head, he pressed on, “Albus wants to know what you want to do about Harry's schooling. He's of the age he can drop out of he wants. From what he says, he assumes Auror training isn't in the offing, what with the bond.”“Oh hell no, no Auror training,” Sirius said with a firm shake of his head. Reaching up and running his fingers through his hair, he admitted, “This is one we didn't think about or plan for. Shite.”Turning sideways on the bench, Remus draped one of Harry's legs over his then thought it over. After a few moments, he sighed then told them both, “I say we work on the core classes, other than Potions and Herbology. We can get what's needed for NEWTS in those. Career—I don't honestly have an idea there what we can manage. The core classes we can easily handle teaching Harry. He's a year behind anyway, so we have to catch him up before we press on.”“Do that and we'll work from there. I'm not worried about the career part. If Harry wants to do something later, we'll work with it then. For now, we'll just get down what's needed,” Sirius told him. “We'll have to set something up to work with this when we settle a little. It won't be hard, I don't think.”“We'll manage,” Remus said, making a note on his sheet. “Lastly, he said we may want to keep an eye out for known Death Eaters lurking around. He thinks the house is hidden enough and that most don't know about it, but he says to be cautious because of the mess with Kreacher.” Looking at the two, he imparted, softly, “That's a wise idea. They can't get in, obviously, but we need to be aware. With Harry back and that prophecy leaked, that side might want to try something.”“Yeah, alright, we'll do that. There are detection spells we can layer on to alert us to who is where. We'll set those up. You'll have to do part of them on the park as I'm not chancing Harry and I going out,” Sirius told him, tone weary. “Damn traitorous elf! That we don't need in this mess.”“I'll handle it and set up the standard running list of who comes and goes. I'll also have the elves help keep watch. They'll know if someone magical shows up,” Remus told him with a firm nod.“Good plan,” Sirius told him, pleased. “Anything else?”“No, that's all I needed to cover with you. I'll go through the other parts to keep abreast of what's going on with the war just so we know. If it's anything I think you should know, I'll pass it along.” Remus told him.“Good. Alright, let's just relax a while then we can find something to do,” Sirius said with a nod. “I think, maybe, you need to give us a better overview of all that's gone on. We have the brief one, but a more detailed version is probably wise so we know what we're dealing with.”“I can do that,” Remus told him firmly. “Let's adjourn to somewhere more comfortable and relax. Seeing a nod, he stacked the papers then stood, waiting for the two to follow.
