Chapter 8
Tossing the book he had just read aside, Sirius groaned. The more he read on this nightmare, the worse it just seemed to get. It wasn't that he was learning much more than were in the notes the evil arse sent, it was just shoring up what they all knew; that they were good and fucking stuck with nothing they could do to break this. That didn't put him in a good mood. He knew it, deep down, of course, but was holding out hope. Putting his head in his hands, he tried to think. What he wanted was to get a message to Albus to get some fucking help. He didn't think Albus could do anything about the situation itself, but he might, maybe, be able to give them more information. He was damned sure the aged wizard knew just what was going on. Taking that into account, he had plenty that could research this and probably had better access to materials than any of them did. He needed that, desperately. The other side, though, was that he didn't know a way to get that message out without alerting the evil son of a bitch. He had managed the Patronus once and wasn't willing to chance it again. As he couldn't get a response, as it might end up tipping Voldemort off, he didn't know if it even went through.
Pulled out of his thoughts by Harry's voice, he waited to see what his godson wanted.Looking around at the books stacked all over the table, Harry shook his head. They were in the library at the moment, working with what Voldemort passed over. Well, it was mostly Sirius doing it as he knew what to look for. “Is there anything at all that can help or give a hint of what's coming?” He asked. From the expression on Sirius' face, he didn't think so. His godfather didn't look the least bit happy about whatever was in those books.“Not much beyond what we were given in the notes,” Sirius admitted with a resigned sigh. “Even the few things that I've come up with won't help a damned thing. They just shore up what we already know on this nightmare. The only plus here is we do know more about that bond. It's not much, but some, such as we can't hurt each other. That helps. At least we know we're as safe as we can get on that front and don't have to worry about it.”“That does help,” Harry admitted softly, curling up in the comfortable leather chair he was in. “It's mostly acting like a real bond of some kind? That we're tied together.”“From what I've read, yes,” Sirius confirmed with a nod. “It's got all the standard bits when it comes to that, as would be expected. Also, as expected, it's not fucking breakable. Which means I'm breaking something on that Malfoy brat for this,” he huffed, honing his revenge over this in his head.“There's more though, isn't there?” Harry asked softly, sure he wouldn't like parts.“Yes,” Sirius admitted again. “The bit we already talked about is specific to this bonding. There's also a part in here about how our magic can work together more effectively. That's rather useless at this juncture. Not sure how it'll affect anything in the future either. The way we were bound makes it to where our magic can entwine. Even in normal circumstances, that's fairly fucking useless unless you're in an all-out battle. From what's said, it would take plenty of practice ahead of time to manage that, something that's not coming from what we can tell. Most of the rest is just bullshite from that false romantic thinking that this was something like soul mates and you get a happily ever after. Complete and utter bullshite, that is.” Seeing Harry look at him, a troubled expression on his face, he shook his head then added, trying to be soothing, “We're still looking. What we want is to find out just what to expect. That we don't have much on yet. Or anything else that bond might throw at us. We aren't sure with that either. We just need time.” Snorting, he said, “Something we have plenty of.”Taking that in and not liking it, Harry groaned and shut his eyes, head dropping forward. The one thing his mind kept circling back to was that dream thing, whatever it was. That made him cringe slightly and have a horrified reaction because he wasn't all that upset about what happened with the two men. Part of him, somewhere deep down, wanted to do it again. That made him feel sick.Shaking his head, willing those thoughts away, he said, “I have a couple more questions.” Seeing Sirius motion for him to go on, he pressed forward, “What about school? I can't go back, obviously.”“I can cover most of it with you,” Sirius told him, not having thought about that as his mind had been focused on this mess instead. “We'll start setting time aside to do that. You just won't be able to graduate like everyone else. I'm not even sure about getting you to the Ministry for your NEWTS either. We'll see. There's lots of time between now and then to worry about that part.”“I was wondering,” Harry sighed, curling up tighter in the chair. He hated that part. School had been bad with so much that went on, but he missed it. Hogwarts was more his home than Privet Drive ever was. The only upside was he got to spend all the time in the world with Sirius now. That he did like. Changing topics, he asked, “About you being wanted—can't he do something about that? I know it won't mean a lot, what with this mess, but it's something that needs done.”Thinking that over, looking at Harry, Sirius gave a slow nod. “Let's see there. We'll mention it to him. As you said, it won't help shite, but might down the line if we find ourselves in a huge mess. And I want that disgusting rat to pay anyway. That's a given, though.”Once more looking at the books piled all over, Harry shook his head. “There's nothing we can do about this mess and we're stuck. Merlin help us, we're stuck here with him. For the rest of our lives.” For the first time since this mess started, Harry was feeling hopeless. The reality of the fact that there was nothing anyone could do had fully sunk in. And he hated it. Shutting his eyes, he curled up into a tighter ball, hugging himself, head dropping down. At the moment, he didn't want to hear any more of what that bond could do, sure if he did that it would make him more mental. That he didn't think he could handle. While there was anger there, something anyone would expect, especially directed at Draco, he just didn't seem to have the energy to show it. Instead, he just felt—worn out, completely.Seeing the expression on Harry's face, Sirius sighed then got up and went over to him. Taking a seat, he slipped an arm around his godson's shoulders and pulled him close. Giving him a kiss on the side of the head, he said, keeping a soft, soothing tone, “It's fine. We're together, so we'll manage. Nothing to worry about, Harry.” As he wasn't exactly sure where this was coming from, something he would try to get out of his godson later, Sirius said, “Let's knock off for now. We can go outside and wander around a bit. It's nice enough today, something we won't have much longer. I think the fresh air will do us good.”Shaking his head, though not opening his eyes, Harry told him softly, “I just want to go lay down for a while. Some more sleep sounds good to me.”Though he didn't like that, Sirius nodded. “We can do that, too. It's time for a break anyway. We'll lay down for a bit. Either that or you can and I'll drag this mess with us then work in our room.” Nudging Harry to stand, he summoned one of the elves then had them take the books to their room. He wasn't sure what was going on with Harry, but wanted to stay close.Uncurling himself, Harry suddenly felt exhausted and just wanted to find their bed. Rubbing his eyes, he stood then made his way towards their room, focused on crawling into bed and staying there for quite some time.
After a perfunctory knock on the door, Tom let himself into Harry and Sirius' room. One glanced showed Harry curled up in bed with his back to the door. From the sound of his breathing, the young wizard was sleeping. Nothing wrong with that, so he ignored it. Sirius, he saw, was over at the table pouring over the books he had left. Good.
Going over and conjuring a chair, he took a seat then asked, after seeing the normal wary glance from Sirius, “Finding anything we can actually use?”“Just bits and they don't help shite,” Sirius admitted with a sigh. “It's more along the lines of behavior to expect. As that's similar to other bonds, it helps nothing.” Eyes flickering to the sleeping Harry, he said, “The only thing I've found that is slightly big is that this is going to press for consummation at some point. It's not unexpected, as that comes with various bonds, but the way it was worded sounds like it's going to really push for it.”“What book is that in?” Tom asked, scanning the mass that was there. “I read some about consummation, but not much.”Passing the book over after opening to the passage on that, Sirius groaned then ran both hands through his hair. “That we don't need right now.”“True,” Tom said distractedly as he read. “I assumed it was coming as it does with so many bonds. It's also my thought that we partially consummated it with that dream-like state. That activated everything, from what I can tell.”“We need to hold it off,” Sirius snapped, eyes once more drifting to the sleeping Harry. Shaking his head, he added, tone weary, “There is enough shite we're dealing with right now that consummating it further isn't welcome.” Lowering his voice, he then tacked on, “And I don't think Harry would handle it well. I'm not sure what that could throw at us if it happens and he just completely freaks the fuck out over it.”Sitting the book aside, planning to take it with him and read further, Tom leaned back and crossed his ankles. “Nothing I've found so far has mentioned anything about reactions that could come. Which tells me we need to dig deeper to find those. I have more books coming from sources that are reliable. Let's see what I can dig up. We aren't getting much help, but some, something that tells me we need more. I think, maybe, if I use a spell passed to me to further seal the bond, it might stabilize plenty so we don't have to worry about the more severe reactions.”“Not until we know what can come,” Sirius told him, tone level. “Sealing anything up could blindside all of us. Until we know what can come of this mess or what we'll get hit with, sealing it further is a bad idea.”Though he didn't want to admit it, Tom gave a sigh then nodded, “Very true. We need to seal it further at some point to help. It's my thought that if we do it's more protection. You and I, both, are wanted. If something happens and we're caught, if we seal that thing further, it's going to protect all of us. They won't sentence anyone to the Kiss if they are bonded because it can take the partner right with them in that. If they are innocent of anything, like Harry is, the Ministry won't press for that as they are sentencing someone innocent to the same fate. That would give all of us wiggle room.”Rubbing his mouth, Sirius' eyes were once more drawn to the sleeping Harry. That could help and he would admit it. Sighing, he finally said, “We need to, but we need time before that.” Thinking of what else Harry said earlier, he added, “Wormtail is someone that needs to get into custody. If I get cleared, we're going to have even more leverage with that. Not to mention it's going to take pressure off. We both know that the Ministry is still actively looking for me.” He hoped that last bit, and what he only implied with it, would help. That was something that Tom hadn't thought of. He sure as hell didn't need someone stumbling across them by trying to trace Black. “Let me see what I can do. He's worthless anyway,” he sneered, shaking his head as he tried to think how he would go about this.“He always was,” Sirius snorted.“I'll do what I can,” Tom told him. Though he was sure this bond was part of him agreeing, he did realize the danger of the active hunt for Sirius. They didn't need any more problems in this area. Though they were protected, the Aurors had a bad habit of stumbling across plenty by sheer blind luck. He wanted to reduce the chances of that.“I'm going to start taking up his schooling as well,” Sirius sighed, slouching in his chair and folding his arms over his chest. “I think I remember well enough what was taught in this year and the next to cover it. At the very least, I can go by the books for some of it. Potions—not sure there. Do you have the equipment for that?”And Harry's education was also something Tom hadn't considered. The rest of this mess was what had his focus, not to mention everything else going on. “I do. Let me make sure it's set up right and I have all the proper ingredients. His career path was Auror training, was it not?” He was sure that's what he heard, but wanted to make certain.“It was. That's out the window, of course, but I can follow that so he can get what he needs.” Sirius groaned, not sure what to do about that as he very much doubted that any career was in the offing as there wasn't a guarantee they were going to make it out of this mess so he could manage something.“Press on the best you can. I'll check the lab then get my hands on whatever's needed,” Tom told him, planning to do just that. He also planned to step in and help with defense as what was coming made it clear that Harry was probably going to need to defend himself in a way that he hadn't before. Though he had no real information on anything, he had his ear to the ground and some tidbits and murmurs were enough to tell him that the two probably would need to defend themselves soon. He would work on that as well to see if he couldn't trace down what he was hearing to find out how factual it was.Shaking his head, Tom said, “Get your clothing measurements, both of you. I'll have someone tend to getting you better than what you have. If there is anything you want or think you can use for entertainment items, let me know that as well. Hand them over to one of the elves when you manage. I'll ensure you get something nice.” Standing, he said, “I have to go. There are things to attend to.” Without waiting for an answer, he swept out, focusing on everything else he had to take care of, including a meeting with his Death Eaters that night.Watching the evil git go, Sirius huffed then glowered at the door. However, he would get the clothes sizes, for both of them. Something nicer might make them feel better. Glancing back around at the books, he sighed and decided that he needed to delve back in. Any information at all would be helpful at this point. And he didn't want to rely on that arsehole to get it either.
Well after dark, just an hour or so before his normal bedtime, Sirius was seated on a chair by the edge of the bed, gazing at Harry. His godson had slept since they came back from the library. Oh, he had woken a couple of times to go to the bathroom and get something to drink. He had even managed to prod him into eating a bit when supper was delivered. That meal was spent with Harry mostly poking at his food and looking like he was dozing off through most of it. Right afterwards, despite all kinds of suggestions of what they could do to have some fun, Harry had just crawled back into bed, saying he was tired. He was then out cold minutes later.
Reaching out and running his fingers through Harry's hair, he sighed. He was worried, all there was to it. It was his assumption that this was just everything catching up to Harry. Sometimes, when it went that way, all you wanted to do was sleep. Coupled with Harry being a teenager and hitting his growth spurt, and he probably was tired. It was just odd that it hit his godson like it did. Which leaned him to thinking it was something else.Fingers trailing down the side of Harry's face, he didn't know what to do. He wanted his godson to sleep if he was tired, as he didn't often get that chance, but he wanted him awake to get some answers as well. In the state Harry had been when awake, he couldn't get those, though. Maybe tomorrow he would snap out of it. Sirius would see. A selfish part of him, a small bit there, he didn't like taking all this on alone or not having Harry to talk to while he did whatever. That made things feel far worse. He shoved that aside, though. Harry would come out of it, he would make sure of it. Tomorrow he would prod him to do something, even if he was tired. Then he would see what was up.Groaning, giving Harry's head an affectionate rub, he stood to go get changed for bed himself. He was tired, too. That he would admit. Maybe a bit more sleep would do him good as well.
Groaning as he leaned back after taking a seat at his desk, Tom stroked Nagini's head. She was draped over his shoulders as usual. Listening to her grouse about how his Death Eaters annoyed her, he was amused by that. She never did like them, any of them, from what he could tell. One of the other things she was complaining about was that she couldn't spend time with Harry like she had wanted that day. After soothing her that she could the following day, he began to tap his fingers on the desk.
The meeting had been fruitful, in many ways. He had summoned most of his Death Eaters, but not the parents of the idiot teens that had pulled this stunt. What he got was much needed information, from all of them. With what his Death Eaters were like, they were more than happy to give him plenty of details. He was certain that some of them, such as accounts from children in the school, were embellished or exaggerated, but they would contain enough truth to help him. What he found out just shored up what he already knew, which was what he needed. After getting what he could, he began to assign people tasks. Bella and her husband were supposed to get from the Malfoy end what was really going on and what steps Lucius was trying to take. He was sure that the Malfoy patriarch would know it was at his behest, of course, and didn't care. That just meant he was more likely to give up the whole truth. Then he had assigned others to do the same with the Crabbe and Goyle end of the nightmare. After that, though he had his own contacts, he sent a few with Ministry connections to find out just what was going on there. Others he decided to send on a wild goose chase to see if they could find Harry. However, part of the reason for the hunt for Harry was to see if someone could manage to trace him. It would give him much needed information to protect all of them. Severus he had assigned to the normal; getting what that bearded nightmare knew about this mess and what he planned to do.Stopping when he thought of Severus, his brow furrowed and his fingers began to tap on the desk faster. That feeling about the man was back. There was something—off, was the only way he could think to describe it, about Severus. Oh, the man acted like he had since his resurrection, but there was that niggling that told him caution was needed when dealing with him. Of course he knew that Severus gave up plenty to Albus to look good, but somewhere in him he wondered if it wasn't a case of a spy in his midst. As he wasn't the deranged maniac he knew some of his followers thought him to be, he could see patterns clearly. Some of those led him to wonder about Severus with some of what Albus pulled out of that sleeve of his.Thinking that over long and hard, he decided that, maybe, a test of sorts was in the future for a certain Potions Master. Black was apt to know something about this, as was Harry, but he knew he wouldn't get it out of either one of them at this juncture. In the future, if he played his cards correctly, he probably could. For now, it was up to him.Though he filed that away as something to work with, he focused back on the meeting. Everyone had been assigned something to tend to or look for. That was normal for him, so it didn't look odd. The whole thing was, actually, so no one would suspect a thing. This way he could get the normal information he needed from those with other connections, while working with his own. Perfect. It was his hope that some could come up with something on what Albus was planning.Sighing, he looked down and shook his head. As usual after these meetings, he was tired. As it was past his normal time to retire, that was more pronounced. So, it was time for rest.Petting his girl, he stood with a groan then made his way in the direction of his sleeping chambers. While he did that, he made a mental note to get with the elves the following day to put another door on Sirius and Harry's room, one that they could exit directly from rather than through his chambers. As he was now sure the wards were up to standards that wouldn't allow Sirius an out or a way to send messages, he had no issue with them coming and going at will. Besides, there were times he, himself, took to late night wanderings when he couldn't sleep. They were allowed that as well. It might do them good.Stretching as he walked, he groaned softly. There was so much here to work on that he was having a rough time focusing and prioritizing. That was something else that he needed to work on. While the bond, and what could come of it, were items that required his attention, what else was in the works did as well. He was sure that at some point the two would converge, but he needed to focus on both. That he wasn't doing. If he didn't focus on the goals he had before the bonding, those would fall behind. That he couldn't allow to happen. Which meant he had to come up with a better way to take this on. He would ponder that the following day as well to see what he could find.Slipping into his chambers, he had Nagini slither off him so he could get changed. While he tended to his normal ritual, he summoned the elf in charge of watching Harry and Sirius to get the daily rundown of what they had done. As he listened, he was pleased that there weren't any shenanigans. At least so far. With what he knew of Sirius, he needed to stay alert for those as he was sure something was coming at some point, but they were good now. Perfect.Once the elf finished, he sent the creature off with the standard instructions then slid into bed. Dousing the lights, he sighed as he got comfortable. As always, he ran his day through his mind while waiting for sleep to claim him, something that always helped. As he dozed off, he wondered how much more was coming and if he could handle it. That was a big question and one he had no answers for, but he would take it on as it came. He just hoped for some idea of what to plan for was all.
