Chapter 8- What’s Missing
Harry sighed and leaned back in his chair; he had just finished filling out a report for the last raid he had been on, nothing major but enough to send him home with a few more scratches. He put the report in his outgoing box and picked up another file, one that he had been trying to focus on for the past week. The faded yellow parchment had a black and white moving photo of a overly confidant looking woman; the name at the top of the page read Sasha Claire.
Her raven hair was shoulder length and and cut at an angle, her face was short but narrow and her pale skin made her almost luminescent. She looked like a ghost in the picture; it was haunting to look at, but the part that bothered him the most was the fact that in a mug shot, on her way to Azkaban Prison, she was smiling.
The Cheshire grin that painted her face was unsettling; it was not a psychotic smile nor did it seem in any way crazed. The look was one of knowledge, as if she knew more than she was letting on.
The file stated that she was a certified Seer and a Death Eater. She had been tried and sentenced in the days following the fall of Voldemort. Her crime other than confessing to being loyal to The Dark Lord was that she had seen to torture under Umbridge’s administration. She had admitted her crimes coolly and without coaxing according to the recored.
While she had never laid a hand on anyone herself she was always able to find a steady hand to do it for her. She named many in her statement; some of them Harry knew, others he didn’t. One name that was circled in read the only person on the list that the Aurors at the time had not been able to track down: Gregory Straus. A note beside the name read Werewolf.
Harry had searched every resource he could think of, but the only information he could find on the man was that he was indeed a werewolf and that his country of origin was south Russia. There was no more on him. He had even asked Kingsley Shacklebolt for his help with getting any info from the Russians, but to no avail. They didn’t have any record of him other than a brith certificate; when he had left the country or when he had become a Were seemed to be lost or nonexistent.
Harry put the file in his briefcase along with a few others that could be of some use and clipped it shut. As he was getting up to punch out and leave for the day, his partner came jogging up to the desk.
“Shaun, I thought you had gone home by now.” Shaun Alan, a young 23 year old Auror had been paired to Harry for the past four years. He was blonde and energetic with a smile that could blind you.
“No, I’ve been down in the lobby. There is a new receptionist and she’s a cutie. Been chatting her up for the last twenty minutes. But anyway, as I was getting some snacks from the shop, Susan from the Divinations section of The Prophet stopped me and told me to tell you that she might have a lead for you.” Shaun’s grin was intense, “It’s a good one, I think. Something about a region in France that muggles and magic folk can’t get near; And there’s no record of it here at the Ministry.”
Harry could have kissed him just then. “You’re kidding? That’s amazing Shaun!” I owe you another one, mate!” Harry started down the hall and punched out before heading down to the atrium and out onto the streets of London.
He pulled out his cell phone and called the house. It rang a few times and little Lily answered.
“Potters, this is Lily speaking.” The sweet little voice called
“Hey Sweetie, it’s Dad, can Mummy come to the phone?”
“Daddy! Yeah, just give me a bit, she is starting dinner.” He smiled as he heard her run through the house and hand the phone to Ginny, telling her that he was on the other end.
“Hey Babe, how are you?” He could hear the sound of something cooking on the stovetop, the faint pops told him some type of meat.
“I might have a lead on Al, I have to run by the Daily Prophet and talk to someone named Susan in Divinations. You know anything about her?”
“Yeah, that she is a loony. About as out there as Trelawney. What did she say?” There was a hint of hesitation in her voice, the last thing they needed was another false lead.
“Something about France and a place no one can get to. I’ll tell you more when I get home. I’ll call when I’m on the way, just wanted to clue you in. I’m sorry that I’m gonna be late for dinner.” He felt bad for trying to rush off the phone, but he didn’t want to miss Susan if her clue was real.
“Don’t worry about it, just find out what you can. I’ll keep it warm for you.” They said love and their goodbyes and then Harry was off to find Susan; he had no clue where her office might be.
Lucky for Harry, Shaun was right behind him, with a grin on his face ready to lead the way. Shaun knew the office of almost every female in London magic and muggle alike, at least those that were single. So he was Harry’s guide through the Daily Prophet offices.
Ginny hung up the phone and worked about finishing up that night’s food. Lily sat at the table practicing her handwriting. Sitting beside her chair as always was the wolf pup. Harry had found him the night Al was taken and brought him home, since then the little guy had yet to leave Lily’s side for more than absolutely necessary.
“Daddy is going to be little late tonight, he has to make one more stop and then he will be on the way. We will put his food in the oven for him.” Ginny hushed about setting the table for the two of them and asked Lily to put her things away.
“Who is a loony, mum?” She asked, the pup trailing behind her.
Ginny giggled as she was filling their plates.
“It’s a not nice word that mummy shouldn’t have used for someone that is strange. Let’s not use it anymore.” She had to fight to hide a smile.
“Does the strange person know anything about Albus? I heard Dad say his name.” At the mention of Albus the wolf perked his ears and gave a whine.
Ginny set down her fork and signed, she had hoped Lily hadn’t heard any of that.
“Maybe. He doesn’t know yet. Uncle Shaun knows someone that says she might know something. But dear, lets not get our hopes up yet, not until we hear from daddy tonight, ok?”
Lily just nodded and ate her food. Every now and then slipping the wolf some food and petting him behind the ear.
“You ever going to give him a name? Can’t call him puppy and wolf forever.” She was trying to change the subject and make her feel better.
“No, i’m waiting for Albus; we should name him together. Daddy did find him when Al got taken.”
They finished eating in silence, the spaces on either side of them for Al and Harry were very noticeable tonight. The feeling of something missing was weighing heavily on them.
Harry stood outside the door to Susan’s office, it had a gold plaque on it with her name and station: she was the editor for the Divination section of the Prophet.
“You can come in Harry, you won’t find out anything from out there.” The voice on the other side called, startling Harry. He pushed the door open and walked in.
“Sorry I was just trying to steel myself is all. How did you know I was standing there?” He closed the door behind him and sat in the chair opposite the desk.
She gave a small laugh, “Not my powers, I promise. Shaun said you were coming and my secretary let me know you had come up this way.” Harry got a good look at her as she came around the desk to sit on the edge; she was thin but healthy. Her hair was dark brown and her skin was a shade of mocha; she had a black shawl around her shoulders and a long brown dress that trailed behind her.
“I do have something that might help to find your son. I have gotten wind of a prophecy. One that is troubling, but i’ll get to that later. I have been meditating and trying to focus on your son.”
“Why?” Harry interrupted her, “Why are you trying to find Albus? You don’t know him or me.”
“If I only worried about people that I knew, I would not be of help to many people. I heard what your family was going through and felt compelled to lend my powers. There have been rumors, an alleged prophecy. I don’t know the details, but I hear whispers in my gazing. A new dark lord rising and a vision of a young man with a snake.” She pulled her shawl closer to her as if she suddenly got cold.
“And they think this is about my son? That’s ridiculous! Why?” Harry was starting to believe this was a bad idea, just another seer with delusions of grander.
“I don’t know any of that. but what I do know is that when I try to meditate on a location I get something strange.” She moved to the back of her desk and pulled out a book.
“I draw what I see in my visions, and when I try to look for a place, I get these pictures.” She opened to book and flipped to pages of a hillside village. in all honesty they were beautiful sketches. Every one of them showed different views of a hilltop.”
“These are great, but what does this have to do with my son?” Harry’s patience was growing short.
“Well, in one crystal gaze I saw a town sign and looked into it.” She found a folder in her drawer and handed it to him. He opened it and there were photos of the hillside village, the leaves blowing in the wind that was present only in the magical picture.
Harry almost dropped the folder; in the photos there was a shack at the top of the hill that was not in Susan’s drawing. Everything else was the same, save for that building.
“Now, I can’t make any promises, but I think that this may be where Albus is. When I cannot see something in a vision, that means it is being magically protected. It could simply be a protected home or property, but it only comes up when I’m trying to focus on your son. Whenever I saw the hilltop, it just felt like something was missing. So I went looking for a photo.” She looked at him hopefully. Harry was speechless.
This was the biggest lead they had gotten, and it was more promising than any of the vapor thin hints they had gotten before. They might finally have enough of a lead to bring Albus home.
“It’s in France; where ley lines cross. It is a naturally magical place.” Susan let out a gasp as Harry hugged her.
“Thank you! You have no idea how much this means to us! If there is anything I can do to repay you, let me know.” He released her and started for the door.
“If I am right, and you bring him home, I only ask to talk with him about the prophecy. That is payment enough. Good luck Harry Potter.”
Harry rushed out and headed for home; much planning had to be done in order to find Al.
