Chapter 8
Of all the things Sirius could have said to him, what came out of his mouth stunned Remus. Eyes wide, he did stop, but stared, wondering what in the world was going on. The letters from Sirius over the years, and the times they had met up, hadn't shown any kind of animosity or vitriol, certainly nothing like Sirius was showing now. And it took no leap of the imagination to tell Sirius was irate. The tell-tale flush he remembered from so long ago, not to mention the expression on his face, spoke of a great deal of anger.
After sputtering, he asked, making sure to stay right where he was as he knew Sirius would have no issues casting spells if he was this upset, “What's going on, Sirius?” While the next thing that wanted to come out of his mouth was what caused his anger, he didn't ask. Knowing Sirius, it would come out quickly.“Back the hell off and stay away from us,” Sirius ground out, snorting as he gritted his teeth. This whole bit had everyone in the Alley, or so it seemed, stopping to watch. And he rightly didn't care. Let them. If they listened in, not only would they hear the reason why, but he could make it fucking clear as crystal that he and Harry were not going to end up involved in this nightmare. While it might not stop people like Albus, it would give the sheep something to think about. Because he had waited for a long time to say some of what he wanted and not play the part he had to, so he was going to get as much out there as he could.“What is going on?” Remus asked again, completely bewildered, brow drawn down. He made no move that might set Sirius off, though. He just hoped that Albus would come join them shortly. The aging Headmaster might be able to smooth down Sirius' ruffled fur.Though his wand trembled slightly from the anger he was feeling, Sirius kept it locked on Remus, eyes on fire. He could hear and feel Harry beside him, reminding him to do nothing that would get him arrested. While he nodded to let his husband know he heard, he didn't say anything. Well, to Harry anyway.Voice containing plenty of venom, he snarled, “Tell me, Remus, why didn't you take Harry after James and Lily died? You promised them you would. It was even in their wills. Don't give me the line of bullshit you feed to everyone else, either. It won't work. Harry and I, both, know they had a vault set up for you so that you had the funds to take care of him.” Then he waited. While he didn't expect Remus to come across with anything which would mitigate what he had done, he wanted to hear it before he proceeded. Now that Remus didn't expect! It had been so long ago he mostly forgot about it, in fact. After sputtering, eyes flitting from who he knew was Harry to Sirius' wand then to his old friend's face, he stammered out, “Albus thought it best for Harry go to his aunt. It had to do with the Blood Wards it would create. While James and Lily might have provided plenty of money, it would still be too great a hardship for me to have taken him, what with all I deal with for a couple weeks a month.”“Yup, just like you always were; a fucking sheep,” Sirius shouted back, trembling harder from the anger he was trying to control. “Fucking pathetic, that's what you are!” Though he heard plenty of stunned voices and people trying to coax him into calming down, he ignored them. “How dare you! You're making weak excuses just like you always did! It's nothing more than that. Albus wanted you to do it, so, rather than think for yourself, you just agreed, not once thinking about the little boy that needed you.”He then tried to take a step forward, but was held back by Harry and his Solicitor. However, he spat, “Because you're a werewolf, it was too hard. Bullshit! It's the same weak arse bullshit you've always spouted because you feel sorry for yourself! Nothing more. Harry needed you, Remus. He needed you more than you needed to feel sorry for yourself! You just couldn't see beyond your self pity was all. Poor me, I'm a werewolf and it's so hard. Poor me, I can't do this because of what happened when I was a child. Poor me. All it ever was. Your usual routine.”Mouth dropping open, Remus just stood there, unable to respond to any of it. What the hell? Though he and Sirius had a few arguments over the years, especially while in school, his old friend had never, ever said anything like this to him and he didn't think he ever would. “Sirius--,” he squeaked out, not sure what to say, eyes so wide he was sure they might fall out. Then he began hoping that Albus would hurry up. He might be able to get Sirius to calm down. Well, he hoped he could anyway. If it went on like this, he was sure the two of them would end up in an all out battle, one he would lose. He was well aware of what Sirius was like and how good he was at dueling. Add in his anger and there was no chance he could come out on top. All he could hope for was not ending up with body parts hexed off.“Don't 'Sirius' me!” Sirius snarled, voice a deadly growl. “Don't you dare. I've had to play nice with you all these years since I escaped. That's done. I don't have to anymore. So, now you get to listen to what I have to say. And, for the first time, it's going to be the whole fucking truth as I see it.”“Everyone is about to hear what your self pity and cowardice caused Harry, Remus. Because I'm going to lay it out for you,” Sirius told him, an evil grin on his face. Then he made sure his voice was loud enough that everyone in the Alley could hear it loud and clear. At this point, it seemed that everyone had stopped whatever they were doing and were listening intently. Good! He wanted them to. While he could see Albus making his way towards Remus, he was going to ignore him for now. Remus first, then he was going to rip a few chunks off that old goat.“Want to know what you left Harry to Remus? You say you wouldn't have been able to properly care for him, but you would have given him the one thing in this world he needed; love. He sure as hell didn't get that with his relatives! He got shoved into a cupboard under the stairs to live. He got called boy instead of his name. He was used as a house elf from the time he could stand on a chair to cook and do dishes. He had to clean up after his so called family. Vernon dragged him around by his hair. Petunia took swings at him with frying pans. He never received birthday or Christmas presents, but he sure got to watch his cousin get small mountains of them and be doted on. He was hated because he could do magic. They tried to quash the magic out of him. That's what your cowardice and self pity left him to. Which was worse, Remus? You not being up to snuff completely a couple weeks a month or abuse?”Now Remus really was sputtering, never having heard any of this. “Sirius—you need to understand,” he tried, hoping he could make Sirius understand it was better because of the protection of those Blood Wards.“Don't. You. Dare!” Sirius ground out, taking a step closer, feeling Harry gripping his arm to hold him back. He wouldn't do anything stupid as he wasn't so far gone in his anger that he didn't realize that doing something foolish would hand himself over to the Ministry and leave his husband vulnerable in all kinds of ways. “Don't tell me being abused, neglected and starved is better than having to put up with what you go through. You just took the easy way out because you can't think for yourself and will follow Albus down the road to hell if that's what he wants! You may have had to, and still do, deal with plenty because of what happened to you, but you had something so many never did; parents that loved you no matter what. They never abused you, so you have no concept what it's like. While you didn't have much money, you had love. Most of us would have given up everything we had to get the love your parents gave you. Instead, you just want to feel sorry for yourself and decided that was easier than doing what you promised James and Lily.”“Now look,” Remus snarled, his temper catching fire for the first time. It wasn't that he could argue the right in what Sirius said, but more like his anger was being driven by guilt. While Sirius was plenty irate, he wasn't so far gone that he was tossing anything out there that wasn't the truth. In fact, it was probably put in a way that was very blunt because he was irate. “You don't have to deal with what I do, Sirius!”“No, I don't,” Sirius shot right back. “I never did. But I know we accepted you for just what you were and it didn't matter. It wouldn't have to Harry, either. Ever. He wouldn't have cared and didn't. He would have cared about you just like your friends did, Remus! And having you love him would have been all that mattered. You couldn’t do that, though. You were too wrapped up in your self pity.”“I had to deal with being in Azkaban for something I didn't do,” Sirius then shouted. “After that, running until the person that did kill my friends was finally caught! You want to compare bad, Remus? We can do that! You won't fucking win with me. What you forget is how well I know you. That's going to come in. People see you as mild mannered and whatever, feeling sorry for you if they know you well. Well, trust me, we both know they can't feel more sorry for you than you do yourself. In fact, that self pity affects everything and everyone around you! You left a little boy to be abused for years because you couldn't get over it. You then soothed yourself that you did the right thing because the great Albus Dumbledore gave you an easy out, swearing it was the right thing. What you didn't expect was someone to finally call you on your bullshit! And I am. You're fucking pathetic.”Then, with an evil grin, he added, knowing this was going to probably hit home more than anything else he said so far, “I hope your fiancé knows about your self pity streak. She might love you, but I damned well guarantee you're going to still continue to wallow. Hell, it wouldn't surprise me a damned bit if you wallow so much that you run off, especially if it gets hard. After all, that's what you do.”At that, Remus looked like he had been slapped, standing there with his mouth hanging open. His gut was also curdling over some of what was said. How did he deny it or make Sirius see sense? As angry as his old friend was, he wouldn't listen.Albus stepped up by Remus, stunned at what Sirius was saying. Even worse was it was hard to counter. Remus may not have known some of it, the same with the others listening in, but he did. He just didn't want it out there that he knew. After making a placating gesture, hoping like hell to calm this down before Sirius really blew his stack, he said, “I think we all need to calm down and take a few deep breaths.”“I think you need to go bugger a hippogriff, Albus,” Sirius shouted, wand now leveled on the old man. “Fuck off! There isn't a damned thing you have to say that I want to hear either. I damned well guarantee you there is plenty I want to say to you, though!”“Now, Sirius, I'll listen to whatever you have to say, but we don't need to air our dirty laundry in public.”“Fuck you,” Sirius shot right back. “No chance I'm going to talk alone with you. All you're going to do is your normal song and dance, trying to spin whatever. Screw that. You're not lily white in this either. All you did when you pulled the stunt with Harry was to further your agenda, nothing more. After all, if Harry was loved and cared for, he wouldn't have been the good little sheep you need him to be, would he? You knew about that Prophecy, all of what it said, before James and Lily died, knowing it meant Harry. So, you knew that evil arse wasn't gone then that Harry needed to end it. But that's not all you knew.”“Now, Sirius,” Albus soothed, trying to take a step forward, hoping to calm the situation. With as angry as Sirius was, who knew what he would toss out there for all to hear.“Back off, old man,” Harry said, tone cold as ice, lifting his wand for the first time and leveling it at Albus. Though he heard Ron and the rest of the Weasley's sputter, he ignored them. “Stand right there and listen to what he has to say. I'm sure everyone else around will love part of it too. After all, it's going to give them plenty of information they probably need since you've hidden it.” As those words came out of his mouth, he glanced around. Like since Sirius started with Remus, everyone was standing around, listening intently. There were more there now, though, including the Minister of Magic. Good. Let them hear. He was sure it was information plenty could use.“Harry, please, we just need to calm down,” Albus soothed, though he stopped trying to move forward. It wouldn't do to engage with the two in a battle, that's for sure. Both were needed for so much that angering them more wouldn't help.“Shut up, Albus,” Sirius snapped at him. “I don't want to hear it, any of it. Calm went out the window a long time ago. Especially after we figured out why you pulled so much of this shit.”“Now, Sirius, please,” Albus said, trying to calm him down. He wasn't exactly sure what Sirius meant, but didn't want speculation, especially if it was wrong, out there for the whole world to hear. It was best to do this in private, to soothe and placate whatever they thought was going on, before the situation they were in was made all the worse.“No,” Sirius shouted. “We want nothing to do with you and your bullshit schemes, plans and maneuvers, Albus! And that's all it is, always has been. You dropped Harry on that damned doorstep already planning what was needed. After all, if he was abused and starved for love, he would do anything to please the adults in his life. It worked, too.” That's where he stopped and grinned evilly, “Well, until I came back into his life that is. Now it won't, ever. We know better and what to watch out for. It's why we didn't come back when you had Remus all but begging me to return. We know what went on and why.”“You think you're so much smarter than most, so no one can figure out what you did. You're wrong. We did, Albus,” Sirius shot at him. “You were training Harry to be another of your little sheep and to do your bidding. And you had a reason for it. It had to do with his scar.”After reaching over, though keeping his wand leveled at the two, he lifted Harry's fringe then said, looking back at them, “You'll notice it's gone. We had it removed. Interesting thing, though. When it was removed, they found something in it. It was called a Horcrux. Before they could get rid of the scar, the Horcrux needed removed. While there were plenty of not nice choices on how to do it, I picked the safest. Harry died, Albus. He was dead for a full minute, then they brought him back. Horcrux gone and destroyed. So, unlike what all you idiots are touting and what's in that rag all of you call a paper, the Prophecy is fulfilled. One died; Harry. So, it's up to all of you to end it now. Harry isn't. He did his part.”Albus went pale at the revelation, not sure what to say. All along, he presumed that no one would have ever known Harry was a Horcrux, let alone it being gone. It was the reason he had pressed so hard to find him, knowing that until the one in Harry's scar was gone, the nightmare couldn't end. He never envisioned that it wasn't there. Before he could say anything, though, Sirius continued.“So, it's gone. Done. You don't need Harry anymore.” Sirius spat. Then, once more, he gave a malevolent grin, “Which means I bet the Minister of Magic and the DMLE wants to know what you do about the other Horcruxes, Albus. After all, you have the Order hunting them. Not sure what you said to your sheep about them, but Harry and I figured out what you were talking about when Remus mentioned the immortality bit in one of his letters to me while trying to coax me to return. This battle can't end until you give up what you know. Hell, if you had done so long ago, it might be over by now. How many lives has that cost, Albus? I suppose to you it doesn't matter, does it? They are just pawns on a chessboard and mean nothing. Something sacrificed to the greater good. Just like Harry was supposed to be.”“You're no better than the other side,” Harry said softly, wand still trained on the other two. “I don't care what you delude yourself into thinking. That’s why we won't help you. I'm not stepping in to do a damned thing for anyone that would pull these stunts. I was a child when I faced what I did, something you were content to let go on. Our guess is because you needed me 'trained' and 'toughened up' for the fight you needed me to step into. After all, at the time I would have done anything for the approval and affection of the adults around me. Not anymore. You and the UK can go screw yourselves. I'm not helping.”“Harry,” Albus sputtered, not sure what to do as there were now loud twitters among the crowd at what was said.“Go to hell,” Harry told him coldly. “You knew. You knew all those years ago and did nothing. It was easy to get rid of the Horcrux and caused me no harm at all. What they did could have been done here as well, easily. Even Muggles do something similar in surgeries for some areas. If they can manage, so could our kind. You didn't want it to happen, though, and let it go on. You let the world explode and him gain full power because you had your own plans to end this. I'm not helping anyone that will pull a stunt like that.”“You knew it all, Albus. The Horcrux bit, the abuse, what you were doing, all of it. And everyone let it go on. All of them. Even after some in the government heard so much from you as part of your Order, they hid it. They hid bits that could have stopped the nightmare you're all in. Kingsley is head of the Aurors. He's also one of your good little Order puppets, helping you. Tonks is an Auror and Remus' fiancé. You can't tell me she didn't know. And I bet they didn't tell anyone, helping you find the Horcruxes without a peep to the right places. They helped you search for a boy, though I'm sure you convinced them it was to 'protect' him, rather than do what you could to stop the fight before so many died. You have spies everywhere to feed you information, but I bet it doesn't go to the place that it will help the most. Because you're smarter than the rest. So, fuck you, Albus. Fuck the Order. And fuck the UK. We aren't helping. If you want this to end, it's up to all of you.” Then, finally, Sirius stopped, lowering his wand, chest heaving, eyes still alight with fire. He was sure plenty was coming after this, but he got out part of what he wanted to say. That's all that mattered.“Go to hell,” Harry said, glaring at him as he lowered his wand. “This isn't our fight. We're not going to help a fight when the 'good' side is just as bad as the one they are fighting against.” Hand on Sirius' arm, he glared at Dumbledore, not bothering to look around at anyone else. Now they had to wait for what was coming from it. It wasn't over, he knew it.
Rufus had come to the Alley for plenty of reasons after hearing what happened. First and foremost was to make damned sure the Death Eaters caught were handled correctly. Once that was tended to, he began working on the other areas, such as soothing citizens and shopkeepers that they were doing what they could to protect them. As he was in the middle of tending to matters related to that, the shouting match started. Because of who was involved, having learned two of them were Sirius Black and Harry Potter, he was highly interested. Potter was someone they desperately needed at this juncture, even if it was only to help the unwashed masses feel better.
As the confrontation pressed on, he honed in on what was said. Oh, there was plenty there he sure didn't know! The more that was said, the angrier he grew. Albus—he knew what the old man was like and he hadn't managed to get anything out of him that might actually help with what was going on. He knew the old man knew plenty, but didn't have a clue what it was. Well, he did now! And he was irate. Then hearing his Head of the Aurors was involved and possibly knew parts, his temper soared. After that another Auror's name was tossed out, it added fuel to his fire. Teeth grinding, he planned to figure out what in Merlin's good name everyone in this mess knew. And he would do it by any means he could, because he needed the damned information! When Black and Potter finally stopped, he snagged the head of the Hitwizards and conferred with him. They needed Black and Potter to talk, but doubted they could get them to do so the normal way, so they were going for something else. Just so they could get them to the Ministry, he could manage. And it had to look good. After finally getting a plan in place, he walked over to where Black and Potter were standing. Seeing the two glare at him, he nodded to Solicitor Greenways, figuring he was there for Black. Good. What he wanted. Lifting his chin, he snarled, “I want Black arrested for the kidnapping of Harry Potter.”“Oh, hell no,” Harry snarled, eyes flashing dangerously. “Leave him alone! There isn't anything you can do or pin on him. Any charges from when I vanished had the statutes run out on them years ago.” This was what they feared and the worst that could come of it.Motioning for the Hitwizards to take Black in, he watched as they slapped the cuffs on the man. “You and your Solicitor can meet us at the Ministry.”Sirius gave an internal sigh, actually having expected this at some point. However, as he heard Harry starting to swear colorfully, he couldn't help but grin. “You lot have no idea what you're in for now. You're screwed, because Harry's pissed.” Then he was whisked away.“Meet us at the Ministry,” Rufus told Harry again, glancing at Greenways, who was already protesting, then Apparated away. Perfect. It looked good for the masses and he might get what he needed out of the two.“Bastard,” Harry snarled, eyes flashing dangerously. However, he grabbed the Portkey their Solicitor had and was whisked away. If anyone thought they were going to put pressure on his husband to get him to help with this mess, they were sadly mistaken!
Sirius kept his feet as they appeared in the Ministry, but his brow furrowed. This wasn't a holding cell or interrogation room. It was like an office. Now he wasn't sure what was going on. Almost immediately, the handcuffs were released and the Hitwizard with him gestured for him to take a seat. Though wary, rubbing his wrists, he did then waited. What the hell was going on?
When the door opened, he saw the Minister come in. After the man talked with the three Hitwizards there, they stepped outside, leaving him alone with Rufus. After waiting for Rufus to take a seat, he asked, “What the hell is going on? Am I under arrest or not?”“I would say not,” Rufus chuckled, leaning back. “I need to talk to you and who they tell me is your husband. This was just the easiest way to do so without arousing suspicions. Nothing more. We'll wait for your husband to join us then I'll explain what I want to know.”“Well, that's not going to be as easy as you think,” Sirius chuckled, still rubbing his wrists. “Harry is going to blow up on all of you for the arrest.”“We'll manage,” Rufus told him with a dry snort, sending for some tea while they waited. It would also give him time to figure out how to get the information he wanted. Good.
