Chapter 8
“We're going to organize the library then?” Harry asked, leaning over and looking at the parchment Severus was holding. They were standing at the foot of the stairs after finishing breakfast and he wanted to make sure he understood what all they were planning for today.
“Yes,” Severus nodded, looking at the list to ensure they had gathered all the supplies needed. Though most of what they were to tackle needed spells, there were others, like a doxy infestation, that required other bits to tend to them. “We're going to also start repairing some areas the elves haven't managed to get around to yet.” The library was plenty neglected, there was no doubt about it, but it didn't seem like it was in the shape of the worst of the rooms.“We're going to find all the dangerous books and put them in one place with wards,” Sirius said, coming up to stand by them, sipping at his tea. “That needs taken care of first. The wards we need to erect take time, too.”“Black is right,” Severus nodded with a sigh. They had to not only put the standard ones up, but one to keep pests away as some of the tomes tended to attract rather nasty ones because of the dark magic they contained. And, honestly, both he and Sirius wanted to know just what was there. While he was the kind that didn't want books destroyed, even if they contained rather disgusting topics, there were some which needed it done because of the danger they posed, even if you didn't read them. Just having them around could cause major issues. He hadn't seen any of that sort in the walkthrough and basic look he had, but wanted to make sure. No sense in buying trouble if they didn't have to.“I'm going to say that we get the basics done, tend to pest control then, once you two get started sorting and cleaning, I go down and get the basics going for the room we picked for the Potions lab,” Sirius suggested. “You said we need it done quickly. I can easily get it cleaned up, at the very least, and make sure it's safe.”“We'll do it your way,” Severus nodded after thinking it over for a few moments. He and Harry could easily take on the organization of the library without issue, the same with the repairs. Getting a jump start on the lab would help. “Just make sure you're cautious down there,” he added, though he knew Sirius would keep himself safe.“Nothing to worry about,” Sirius reassured him, sending his now empty beaker to the kitchen. “Right—you have the spells we need?” Hearing the affirmative, he told them, “Let's get on it, then. The faster we start, the faster we can press on.”After duplicating the list he had of all they needed for the spells and handing the other two a copy, Severus summoned the cleaning supplies and motioned for them to follow. This was one task he was sure wouldn't take more than a day. Then they could press on.
As Sirius waited for the final spell reading to come back, he held his breath, looking around at the room they were going to make into the Potions lab. He was sure he had all the pests exterminated, even the minor ones, but this spell would tell him for certain. After a bright green blinking light, he relaxed and nodded. They were gone. Now he could continue on.
After moving to the farthest corner of the room, he began to not only vanish the damaged furnishings, ones that were beyond repair, but casting every cleaning charm he knew. Since this room had been used as storage, at least that's what it looked like to all of them, there was a ton of crap in here to get rid of and clean. As he vanished or sent what looked like it was in good shape to one of the storage rooms, he found what seemed as though it were decades of dirt and just unidentifiable nastiness under everything that was moved. Even with spells, this was going to take plenty of time to clean out.So far they had managed to get plenty accomplished today. The Librarian helped them find all the books in the library that were dangerous, so they were now in their own section with the wards up. They also cleaned out a couple small pest infestations. At first, they were going to just clean the doxies out of the curtains, but there were so many of them that they changed their mind. Instead, they vanished the nasty things and were going to replace them with something far nicer. Before he left them to it, he helped create the added shelves they wanted then started the spells to sort everything accordingly. Severus and Harry were going to finish it up, move all of Severus' books in, set up the area for Harry's school books then start cleaning and changing out what was needed, doing some decorating. Even with it being only the two of them, it shouldn't take it longer than today. He was sure he would finish down here before they did and could go back up and help. At lunch he would figure out the progress so they could deal accordingly.Just as he finally made it out of the one corner, Sirius sighed and looked around. Yeah, this was going to take some time. He didn't mind, though. Better to get it done and press on. As Severus said; they didn't know if they might need the lab for whatever. After all, it wasn't like they could go to St. Mungos if something happened.About to press on to the next area, deciding it was best to do this in a grid type way, he conjured a cloth to cover his nose and mouth. The dust stirred up by this was making him cough and sneeze, so it was best to cover them before it grew worse or if something nasty was released in the air as he went along. Once it was tied in place, he went back to it, but looked up when he heard a sound like someone clearing their throat. As he began vanishing more of the broken furnishings, he saw Eddie floating in the doorway. “Is there a problem?” He asked, hoping Severus hadn't encountered something unexpected that he would need his help with.“Everything is fine,” Eddie soothed, floating in since he hadn't startled Sirius. “Severus just asked me to come down and check on you, nothing more. I'm supposed to assure you that he and Harry are fine. From what I saw, they are toiling away with nary a problem.”“I'm good,” Sirius assured him. He should have expected this as it was typical Severus. Severus knew he could handle himself, obviously, but was a tad on the anal side about checking on him to make sure he was fine. Though he rolled his eyes at it then grinned, he appreciated someone did want to look out for his welfare and was concerned. He didn't have that before Severus came into his life. “Nothing to worry about, honestly. It's just taking some time. Pests are gone, so I'm working on cleaning.” After a glance around, he chuckled then added, “And it's going to take me plenty of time to get this cleaned, trust me.”“The basement hasn't been used much,” Eddie sighed, looking around. “Even the last owners neglected this area.”“I'll manage,” Sirius told him, going back to vanishing and cleaning. “Once I have this one room cleaned, Severus can have at it down here and set it up how he wants. If I calculate it right, I should have it done today, maybe before they finish.”“You three do work ever so well together,” Eddie admitted, floating over to keep an eye on Sirius. Though Severus didn't come right out and say it, he got the impression the man wanted him to come down to watch over Sirius for them. They had the Librarian helping them, with Red popping in here and there as well, but Sirius was alone. As it wasn't a hardship, he took no issue doing so.“We've learned to,” Sirius chuckled as he kept working. “It's become easier over the last year and we've managed to get far better at it.”Since Sirius was the more talkative sort, Eddie thought it all right to start getting information, well once the normal assurances were given. “We were curious about something,” he started. Then he added, “Keep in mind that all but one of us stay in this house all the time. Even he doesn't do more than go out and gather information for us. Well, and talk with one that comes and goes. Your secrets are all safe with us, Sirius.”Honestly? He and Severus assumed the ghosts would want to know what was going on with the relationship and have it explained to them at some point so they didn't think something really horrid was happening. After all, it was odd. With a grin, he asked, “About the relationship?”“Well, yes,” Eddie admitted, keeping an eye out for anything that might prove dangerous, though Sirius seemed to have the worst eradicated. “You do have to admit it's odd. Harry is ever so much younger than the two of you. And he's said you're his godfather.”“I am,” Sirius told him, starting to work on cleaning the area he just cleared out. Then, with a sigh, he said, “It's quite complicated.” In the briefest way possible, he gave the rundown of the events so long ago then his escape. When he finished, he shook his head and sighed, “It was—well, a nightmare. At least until now, there was no chance of me ever fulfilling the role James and Lily wanted for me. And, honestly? At this point in his life, Harry isn't looking for someone to jump in and take over as a father. If it had happened sooner, I might have been able to come in as that role and it could have stuck. Though his third year would have been iffy for it, I may have managed if given the chance. There isn't anymore. He's too old.”“With all he went through, the concept of family just isn't something he'll attach to when it comes to someone trying to step into the father role. He can, and has, let it slide into the role of a protector and mentor, not to mention confidant, when it comes to both of us. But the years have taken their toll on him, so whatever family he might have wanted, and has clung to, is perverted because of his life and how he was treated. His concept of it is different. He's seen what it is, of course, and wants what everyone else has, but it's just not possible because I was out of his life for so long. Then, when I came back into it, I couldn't be around like I needed. I did the best I could and helped in every way I could come up with, but it's not a parent.”“When Severus and I hooked up, we tried as well, but the relationship with Severus was tetchy at best. It took time for Severus to even get Harry to trust him and talk, so seeing him as a father of sorts was out of the picture. That wasn't ever going to happen. There was too much water under the bridge for it to ever come into play. So, we did the best we could and it ended up here.”With a shrug of his shoulders, he added, “While most wouldn't like it and might find it appalling, it works for us. We adore him and will do all we can to make sure he's protected. He loves us and we love him, that's all that matters.”After taking in all that Sirius had explained, Eddie thought it over then gave a slow nod. “I think—yes, I understand. Quite sad that the time you had where you could fulfill the role was taken away.” That did explain some, but not all. He hoped Sirius would keep going.“It wasn't going to happen,” Sirius told him honestly with a sad shake of his head. “I did all I could, but I was on the run. When I did come back to be there for him when it came to the nightmare that started in his fourth year, I just couldn't be around him enough to slide into that role. I tried, I really did, it was just—there was no chance. The time it would take to build that sort of relationship wasn't there.” Sirius figured, from the expression on Eddie's face, he needed to explain, so he walked him through that whole nightmare with the tournament. When he finished, he gave a helpless shrug of his shoulders and told him, “I did all I could. It wasn’t sexual at that point, obviously, and I was trying, but it wasn't happening. Severus—he didn't have the foundation yet to even start. Harry was still wary of him, because of their past relationship, something that didn't help. Hell, it took Harry time to even talk to him without saying something smart arsed. Then there was the time Harry was kept away from me. Once we were together, there were so many around, I just couldn't. Severus and I tried, we really did, but there wasn't much we could do. It didn't help anything that he was back in that castle only a month or so after he was brought into the house I was living in. It was another part where Severus tried all he could, but we both realized early on it just wasn't going to happen. We tried for all we could and managed part, but being the parent wasn't one of them.”Eddie shook his head sadly at what Sirius said and sighed, “I do believe I understand now. At least partially. So very sad.”“We can't fix the past, but we're giving him the best life we can now,” Sirius told him. After making sure the area he was working on was clean, he conjured a chair to take a break, summoning an elf for a butterbeer. Taking it from the creature when it popped back in, he shrugged, “Before we hooked up, we didn't have a chance alone. Between the two of us, we're doing better with the situation. At least Harry has some stability and a family to watch over him. While we might not be the best parental figures in the world, and both of us admit we aren't, we can give him part of what he needs. That's what we're doing.”“Quite well from what I've seen,” Eddie told him honestly, with a smile. “It's obvious you care about him and look after his welfare. You also make sure he stays safe.”“We're doing all we can,” Sirius told him with a shrug of his shoulders. “It's easier now, thankfully. We just have to worry about the house and keeping watch for whatever might come from us vanishing. By the time the mess ends, we hope we have plenty firmly in place so the nightmare doesn't pick back up.”“A good realistic goal,” Eddie nodded in approval. Since Sirius was talking he hoped to get a better overview of all that was going on. So, he would press on with questions, though make sure they weren't too overly personal. He hoped Sirius would understand why he was asking and not take offense. “It sounds like you and Severus haven't been together long either.” It was a small nudge, one he hoped Sirius would expound on.That's where Sirius chuckled. “We haven't been. It started during the year of that tournament,” he said. “Before then, even when in school, we were what could only be termed enemies. Harry and Severus didn't get along at all, either.”Not sure how to explain it, Sirius thought it over then began to give some more details. “From what I gather now, Severus saw Harry send out a huge package of some kind one night and was curious. As he distrusted Harry, and his motives, not to mention all that was going on at the time, he decided to track it. It was one of the packages of food he and his friends were trying to send me from time to time so I didn't have to live off garbage or rats. When it tracked to Hogsmeade, or just outside it to the cave I was using, he followed along. While about the normal happened when he showed up, a bit of a shouting match, he didn't say much more, getting what was going on. I think he understood why I was there. As there was more going on than Harry and I knew, he must have decided to leave it, and me, alone.”“As the year pressed on, with more odd bits going on and he was sure something huge was coming, he showed up a few more times. When he did, he brought food then we talked. The more we talked, the better we got along. Then the rest came in.” Sirius explained the best he could.“It took time,” Sirius shrugged, looking at Eddie and leaning back in the chair, crossing his legs. “That bit was just the start. It helped, though. As things grew worse, he managed to sneak me into the castle a few times to talk with Harry when it was really getting bad. Then he talked me into opening my old house so I didn't have to stay in a cave. It took some talking, but I did. Harry was plenty upset at how I had to live and he didn't need to worry about me, so the house was the better option. Severus promised to get in touch if I was needed, something he kept his word on.”“After that bit, over the summer that followed, it progressed on more,” Sirius went on, smiling a little. “We had a tad more in common than we thought, so it meshed. All it took was work on our end to get beyond the past and not let old habits come into play. Then came keeping it hidden from everyone and working with Harry to have him relax around Severus. None of those were easy. It was complicated by how many were in the house, what they were pulling, what we were all dealing with. To say it was a mess was an understatement.”“When school started again, we kept going. That year he managed to sneak me into the castle once a week so we could spend time together and Harry could visit with both of us. He also started taking a more active role in Harry's life. Though the two of them had to put on an act for everyone to make it look like there was no change in the relationship, they managed. Severus just assigned him 'detentions' and they spent time together. He also had Harry using the mirror I gave him for his birthday, both during the detentions and alone. We both thought that if Harry had someone to talk everything over with, he might not get pulled into something and wouldn't end up set off by all that was going on. Thankfully, it did work.” Sirius sighed with a smile, thinking of all Severus did in hopes of helping a horrific situation. It went above and beyond what most would think he would do.“Oh, very good thinking!” Eddie conceded with a nod and smile. However, he then sighed and said, “It didn't work with the parental part? It sounds like both of you were trying to give that end a go.”“No,” Sirius admitted with a sad shake of the head. “Harry—he had been without a true parent for so long we realized we weren't going to manage. Some talks alone with him made me realize what he wanted was to be with us, but he wasn't seeing us as fathers. Friends was there, thankfully, people he could talk to, but he wanted a relationship like we had. He—it was too late. Puberty hit and his hormones weren't going to allow him to see beyond what he was dealing with. I'm sure he was clinging to get the relationship in some way, but we weren't seen as father figures. It was something he admitted to me.”“I did manage to get him to talk to me about so much of it through the mirror and realized what he wanted. It was then Severus and I managed to get together and hash it out. We were both leery because of what we saw as the reasons. Bringing Harry into the discussion on it, we did manage to get him to agree to see how it went and push for that, but slowly. We weren't going to let him just jump in. It was our hope if we delayed starting it he might focus elsewhere, with someone his own age. Both of us knew of people that were very interested in him and tried steering him in that direction, but it didn't happen. What we finally resigned ourselves to was what I mentioned before; the perversion of the whole relationship. I don't mean it in a sexual way, but that Harry just didn't have enough of a foundation in what one was or felt like, other than having seen it, that it ended up warped in his own head and he went with it. So, we did.”“While he wanted to jump in with both feet, we didn't let him,” Sirius pressed on. “We made him wait. Sixteen, when he hit the legal age of consent, was the line we drew for anything remotely sexual. Before then, we spent time getting to know each other and letting it grow. The more it grew, the more Harry seemed to cling to it. While that bothered us, as we were worried it was for the wrong reasons, it helped him more than we could ever imagine. He adored it and it gave him two people in the world he could talk to about anything. So, despite some reservations, we went with it.” Then he stopped and smiled before adding, “And we all like it. A lot.”“That's all that matters,” Eddie smiled. While it did sound odd and as though so many wouldn't accept it, he had seen the three together. What he saw was love. In the end, the love is all that mattered. “He's not backed away or made it into something almost incestuous, has he?”“No,” Sirius said with a determined shake of his head. “We won't allow him to. While his reasons for it initially might have been somewhat leaning there, we've made sure that's not the case. What we did was bring my friend Remus into the secret. Severus and I decided to have Harry focus there for at least some sort of parental figure. It's worked, to the extent Harry can manage anyway. What it's done is to give Harry one adult in his life he can talk to like he would a parent, about anything, and it stays between him and Remus. We set it up that way as Severus and I, both, thought Remus was the best one for the job. He's—well, you've not met him, but he's calm and quiet, the kind that doesn’t allow himself to get bent out of shape over so much. A plus was Harry did see him as at least an authority figure as Remus taught him one year.”“Oh, good, he does have someone in that capacity, at least as much as he can manage,” Eddie nodded, relieved.“It's the best we could manage,” Sirius admitted with a helpless shrug. Then, with a sigh, he admitted, “I would have given Harry anything and admit it. If it's what he wanted, I would have done it. My choices so long ago made his life a living hell. Severus, though he's not come out and said it, is the same. He made some damned rotten decisions just like I did. We both—Severus has a better head on his shoulders than I do when it comes to some of this, but even he would have given in and let Harry have what he wanted. You could see it on his face when Harry began talking. It might not have been the right reasons, for either of us, but we're not complaining.”After thinking it over, Eddie gave a slow nod. “I believe I understand. In the end, it appears like it's working out.”“It has,” Sirius admitted with a smile, sipping his drink. “Better than we thought. And we like it. There are problems, of course, like any relationship, but we're managing. We can drive Severus absolutely barmy, but he likes it in his own way. It's given a shove in other areas, like getting out, we wouldn't have if Harry wasn't with us. I don't see such bits as bad. We needed out, all of us, before one, or more, of us ended up dead.”“Then you did the right thing,” Eddie told him firmly, floating closer. “It's all that matters. We'll help all we can from here on out.” And they would! Yes, they would help and protect their boys. Quietly, he then asked, “How old is Harry? Just so we know. Nothing more. We won't judge, Sirius.”“He's sixteen,” Sirius told him, looking his way. “He's legal to consent and is for enough areas that there isn't much anyone can do if, or when, they find out he left of his own accord. Severus and I won't get into legal trouble over it either. It's the only reason we agreed to finally take this step. I'll be honest that we wanted to do it last year, but the risks were too high even if the Dusleys' wouldn't have cared. We're all protected this way.”“Legal in this time is perfectly acceptable,” Eddie nodded, relieved to have it confirmed. They all assumed Harry was, but knowing was better. Plus, the house wouldn't take exception. Their boys needed all the protection they could get, from the sound of it. “You seem like you're all getting along well,” he observed, moving away from the more uncomfortable areas. Oh, there was more information they wanted, but the biggest he had now, so they would wait.Sirius downed the last of his drink then vanished the bottle. “We're trying,” he said, standing with a groan then going back to it after getting rid of the chair. “It'll take time. We're not used to being around each other all the time, so it'll take work.” Then, grinning as he started the next section, he added, “And to stop from making Severus go mad. He's likely to do that with us as he's not used to our joking manner.”“He seems fine so far, though he does appear to like to huff,” Eddie chuckled, sliding closer and watching what Sirius was doing.“Not like, loves. Trust me, he's not happy unless he's huffing!” Sirius laughed, going back to it. Then he began talking about some of the more memorable instances of them driving Severus nuts, laughing as he did.Chortling over some of it, Eddie shook his head and smiled. This was the way to start out for all of them, good. And it gave him information he could pass along to the other two in the house to ease their minds. Even better. Yes, they could manage.
