Chapter 7
Brow furrowed as he looked at the phone Arthur had, Albus asked, turning it over in his hands, “These will be approved for use in the UK?”
“Oh yes,” Arthur told him with a nod, leaning over and showing him how to use the most basic of functions. While he wasn't as well versed as the three that gave it to him in just all it could do, he managed the most bare bones by reading the manual they left. “They already have the permits they need to start the business and set up what they want. I've already filed the forms for reclassification, and it'll be approved, as they have all the proof they need that these were a Wizarding invention.”He stopped there then looked around, adding, “And the Ministry wants this pushed, fast. They saw it when I filed the reclassification forms and called me in. I think they want part of it in place as fast as they can get it as they know how dead useful it will be. They were having a huge meeting about it yesterday. Part of what they want is either the landline or mobiles classified as a public utility they can use for official purposes and regulate. From the paperwork I have from Sirius, they're willing to do the landlines that way, as most countries use that—well, utility for it as it's the more stable of the two. I think that's the way they'll go, but I won't know until Monday.”“This—yes, it could be a huge help,” Albus nodded, brow furrowed as he looked over the complicated and unfamiliar device. “It's rather complex, isn't it?” He finally chuckled, shaking his head as he was rather lost, though highly intrigued by it.“This is the simple one,” Arthur told him with a bit of a snort, smiling. “It's the same model Remus has, the basic phone that doesn't do much, but can take pictures. Sirius' is a tad more complicated and can do much more. Harry's, though, is one of the most complex devices I've ever seen in my life. It can do things you can only dream of. Sirius told me it's comparable in function to a Muggle completer.”“Computer,” Hermione corrected softly, looking over Albus' shoulder at the phone. As her parents had mobiles, she was at least somewhat familiar with them and how to go about using one. “It's that complicated?”“Oh yes,” Arthur confirmed with a nod. “I—you have no idea. I've not seen anything like it in my life. While his is a bit bigger than the one I have,” he said gesturing to the phone Albus was holding, “it can be expanded by pulling at the corners to the size of a standard piece of parchment. And he has functions on it I've never heard of. Not only can it take our kind of pictures, but what they call videos.” Seeing confused looks by so many, he explained the best he could what they were, “They are like pictures, but can be as long as you want and have sound with them. It's utterly fascinating.”“Oh yes, this will be a boon for so many,” Albus said, passing the phone back to Arthur. After leaning back in his chair with a sigh, he nodded, “We'll make use of them for certain.” At the moment, they were at the Burrow, having a meeting of the Order to be filled in on all Arthur learned from the meeting the day before. They were going to go over this part first, as he was sure it was something they could use and would want as it would be an immeasurable help. “How soon do you think we can get our hands on one for our use? Any idea?”“I think a week or two,” Arthur told him. Then he explained the best he could, “While I'm still going through the mass of paperwork for the set up of the system, my understanding is that they are pushing to get the shops open as fast as they can manage. Sirius explained, briefly, that for now all calls are going to route through technology off the continent as they're set up in the countries close to us. While he did say there may be problems with the call quality and some of them being 'dropped', meaning disconnected, if I remember right, because of the distance, it'll function. Once they get what they need set up here, it'll be better. From what he said, the landline, as they call it, is more stable, but not portable like these are and is going to take longer to get in place because of what they have to do.”“Fascinating,” Albus nodded, eying the phone that was being passed around. “Yes, we'll be availing ourselves of these once they have it to where we can get them.” With a glance around, he added, “We'll need help from those of you that are either Muggleborns or Halfbloods that are used to them from growing up. I'm sure they'll be different than what you are accustomed to, but you'll have a better foundation to work with than those of us that haven't encountered them before.”Hermione took the phone when Ron passed it to her and looked it over. “It's similar to what my parents have, so I can probably help. Just copy the manual for me and I'll read through it to see what I can figure out.”“The landlines I know,” Severus added, glancing at the phone Granger had, intrigued. Arms folded over his chest, he added, “If it's similar to what I had growing up, it's easy enough to use. We'll see.”“I have the basic schematics of what they are and how they function, something required for the paperwork. I'll make copies and get them to those of you that know what you're doing with the Muggle versions. It should give us a heads up.” He told everyone, looking around. Then smiling, he gave a soft chuckle, shaking his head, “Some of us are going to need plenty of help as we've never seen them before.”Alastor eyed the phone as it was passed around then asked, “It's Plato Onassis that is the one taking on setting everything up?” He wanted clear on who was doing what to make sure the other side wasn't involved in any way. If Sirius and Remus were taking on much of it, he doubted it, but wanted to be sure.“He is,” Arthur told him with a nod. “He's had plenty of experience doing similar projects in other countries, so he knows what he's doing and can manage whatever we need as we have nothing set up that would even be the basics.”“Good,” Alastor nodded. “He's one with integrity and no wonky connections, at least that I know of anyway. And he's not from the UK, so he's not been pulled into this mess.”“He'll end up that way,” Minerva sighed, shaking her head as she looked at the phone that finally made it into her hands. “One way or another.”“He knows what he's doing, if all I've heard is correct,” Alastor told her. “He's worked in plenty of countries where it was all out war among factions and managed. We're not that bad. Yet anyway. He'll manage and do the job right.”“If what I read is right, the phones are far better and more secure than the Floo,” Arthur told everyone looking around. “And Plato can probably manage, fast. At least that's what Sirius said. They already have the plans in place to set it in motion and he's going to hire all kinds of help to get it running right as fast as he can manage. Sirius told me they were just waiting on the paperwork. So, not only will we get a better form of communication, but plenty of jobs in the process. Both are good, for many of us.”“Good. Very good,” Albus nodded, twiddling his thumbs. “Yes, this will help plenty.” Then, changing topics, he asked, though he knew the answer, “Harry is with them? Do we know what happened there and how they managed to find him?”“He is,” Arthur confirmed with a smile and nod. “He looks amazing, too! He—well, he's changed, a lot. I didn't recognize him until Sirius told me who he was, honestly.” Then he added quietly, looking around, “He no longer has the last name Potter. It's Lupin-Black now. I'm not sure about the why behind the name change, but it's legal. I did a bit of a nosy after they left and found his Apparation license. They picked that up just before coming to see me. It's in the name Lupin-Black as well. How he is, I don't know, but they managed. In the end, that's all that matters, I think.”“At least he's been safe,” Minerva sighed, smiling slightly. “We've all wondered so much.”“All three are coming over tomorrow night for tea, so we'll try to get some information about what's going on,” Arthur explained, looking around. “Because the meeting yesterday was a business one, I couldn't go into parts, so I don't know even the basics of what's going on with them. We'll find out.”“Please do,” Albus nodded, pleased. “We can use all the help we can get with this mess. The three of them being back will be a boon we can desperately use, in many ways.”“We'll make that clear,” Molly told him with a nod and smile. “Let's see what we can find out. I mean, none of us know what happened to poor Harry when he vanished. We don't want to tread on anything too tetchy or sensitive, if it was something awful.”“Oh yes, do proceed with caution,” Albus nodded. Then, leaning forward, hands clasped, forearms resting on the table, he looked around and said, tone now serious, “We need to prepare for all this mess to grow worse. I think Harry returning is going to set off a huge chain of events. For now, only a select few know he's back, but we know that won't last. Once it gets out, plenty will end up set in motion. Thankfully, we have some time to prepare. I'm sure the three of them are going to do their best to stave off most learning for as long as they can. We'll use the time granted to do what we can to set up so much we talked about before. It's now time to prepare for the worst so we don't end up blindsided.”A glance around at those in the kitchen told him everyone was paying attention, so Albus pressed on, beginning to delegate the work they needed done to prepare. While they had talked about much of this before, something that would make the tasks easier as everyone knew they were coming and had the basics in place, it was time to get ready for full out war. He was sure Harry returning would set it off completely. While it was already plenty bad, with people calling it 'war' by now, he knew the worst was coming. Any time they could manage to get everything they could in place was welcomed and he would take it.
“Harry? Are you all right?” Sirius asked softly, leaning against the doorjamb, arms folded over his chest.
It was about eight at night and he just finished sending off the last of the paperwork he needed to Plato and filled out what he had left. Remus was holed up in the kitchen, not only working with the elves on some areas, but tending to groceries, household necessities and tackling the last of the paperwork he was doing for him. Harry had vanished a couple hours ago to talk to his friends and hadn't come back. That wasn't odd, of course, but he also hadn't realized how long he had been gone, either. So, he had come to find him.Harry was holed up in the room they were calling the 'family room', like the one they had in the States where their version of the telly was. It also had other entertainment items as well. They had situated it at the back of the house so any noise from the house or the room wouldn’t disturb the others if they were busy, like if he had to tend to work for something. He assumed Harry would use the room more than they would because he didn't have as much to do when it came to the business end or running the house. So, it was something he had the elves do to suit what Harry liked. When he saw Harry look at him then lift his wand and mute what they called the telly, something that looked like a painting, not a Muggle telly, though it ran shows like their version, he stepped in the room and walked over then sat down on the edge of the settee Harry was sprawled on. “You doing fine?” He asked, rubbing Harry's head. Harry—well, he looked slightly unhappy, honestly. While he assumed where it was coming from, he wanted to know for sure.“Bored mostly,” Harry sighed, shifting around to lay his head on one of Sirius' thighs. Once more lifting his wand, he began to flip through the channels with a sigh. “There’s nothing worth watching on the telly. Since they don't have TV channels over here for our kind like they do in the States, you have to put up with the Muggle version. As we can't get cable in this house, there's not much to watch. I've seen most of the movies we have for the player we bought and I’m not interested in watching them again. We have some catalogs for them, so I'll order some more this week, I think.” Turning the thing off when he couldn't find anything worth watching, he lowered his wand and shut his eyes.Sirius started to run his fingers through Harry's hair and looked down at him. Harry looked mildly miserable. He was certain that boredom factored into what was going on, but it was probably more than that. It was the whole mess, he was sure, coupled with once more being forced to confine himself to a house. By now, Harry was used to doing what he wanted and going out if he felt like it. If they could manage just the going out part, he was sure Harry would do better. They just couldn't, all there was to it. The danger was too great. With a sigh, he said, softly, fingers still running through his hair, “You'll get used to it soon and it won't seem so bad.”“I don't want to get used to it, Sirius,” Harry groaned, flopping on his back and looking up at the older man. “I hate it already.” Eyes going shut, he sighed then said, “Sorry, not meaning to whinge, but I don't. I get everyone is trying to make it as easy on me as they can, but—you know.”“I do,” Sirius agreed with a nod, giving a sad smile. “Give it a week or so for everything to settle down and us to see which way the winds are blowing, then we'll get something in place that can help. It's just going to take time.”“Yeah, I know,” Harry told him with a blurry sigh, propping his feet up on the arm of the settee. “It's just—you know. I want to be with both of you, I really do, and would go mad if I was in California without you because I would worry about what was happening. This, though, is like having the freedom we worked so hard to get stripped away.”“And you're not going to get any argument from either of us over that assessment,” Sirius agreed softly, fingers still running through his hair. “We did everything we could to give us all the freedom we could manage over the years and we've now had to give a great deal of it up. I mean, you bonded with us at sixteen and gave up any chance of finding a partner of your own because it gave us plenty of freedom and protection. This is worse, if you ask me.”“Don't regret that for a second either, Sirius,” Harry said, looking up at him. “I knew what I was getting into when I agreed. You both not only explained it to me, but tried talking me out of it. I made the choice and haven't looked back since then. It's something I love. This, though—not sure how long it'll take before I go mental over it. I get it's my choice and I can go back to California if I want, I just couldn't handle being away from the two of you with how bad it is here. It's just not easy.”“No, it's not,” Sirius agreed, smiling at the part about the bonding. Oh, he'd heard Harry say it before, plenty of times, but it still felt good to hear. With a sigh, he then said, “We'll manage. Give it a couple weeks and we'll have a better idea what we can do. Then we'll start going out. It'll be together and not like you did in California, but it'll be fun. If we get too bored, we can hop over to the continent for some bits and find plenty to do there. Nothing to worry about. Just give it a little while so we can get settled in.”“Realistically, I know,” Harry told him, sitting up with a groan then leaning against him, one arm slipping around Sirius' midsection. “It's just getting there. The girls are making it as easy on me as they can and are including me, it's just taking time to get used to.” Lowering his voice, head resting against Sirius' shoulder, he then added, “I'm just worried about what all can come of this. From both sides. No one knows why I left, so they don't have any clue what they might be handing over to that old goat when it comes to information right now. I'm sure Mr. Weasley has told him everything, not realizing none of us trust Dumbledore or whatever plans he has. That's going to make it worse. We know everyone I was friends with is now attached to that Order thing, something I want no part of. They're not only going to try to draw us into that bit, but I'm sure pick right back up with me where we were. I don't want to, Sirius. While I want to see Ron, Hermione and the other friends I had, I don't want drawn in. It'll end up with me having to say no and plenty of hurt feelings all around. Not something I want either.”“It's a concern and one we understand,” Sirius nodded with a weary sigh. “From what Remus said, Ron and Hermione are a big part of the Order. They'll want you involved, of course. Just stick with us and we'll all make it clear it's not going to happen. Hell, I plan to make it clear that we're going to have fucking bodyguards at some point and won't go anywhere alone. That will stop plenty of their recruitment. It won't work well if they're trying to work on all three of us at once. We are all good enough to spin them in circles without anyone realizing that's what we're doing. We've had plenty of practice doing it that we're masters of it.”“True,” Harry grinned, chuckling softly. They did, too. Lots. They had to learn to over the years to protect themselves. It was now second nature enough that they could do it without thinking. And they needed to, that's for damned sure.“We'll manage, not to worry. They don't know what they're tangling with. Nothing is going to work,” Sirius soothed, kissing Harry on the side of the head.“I know,” Harry told him, smiling at the kiss. “It's just overwhelming at the moment. It'll settle, I'm sure. We've dealt with similar each time we moved.”“We did, remember that,” Sirius told him, giving him a squeeze. “Hell, we were all ready to pack up and leave LA two days after getting there it was so overwhelming, remember? We've lived in some big places, but that was so huge and different that we didn't handle it well. It was something we managed, though, and grew to love it in a way we didn't anywhere else.”“Very true,” Harry told him with a nod. He was right. LA was the one place that they were just out of their depths with when they first moved there. It took time to get used to, even though they all had been in places like London, Rio, Singapore and others. The place was so sprawling and everything was so different, it took time. Now it was home, one they all loved. This wouldn't be worse than the overwhelming feeling of that place for the first year. “We can manage,” he said, softly. “It won’t be worse than when you were wanted and it seemed like half the world was looking for me. We were in plenty of danger during that time.”“Probably more than we are now,” Sirius told him honestly. “There was a huge price on my head and we know many would have killed first to claim it. I was said to be dangerous and deranged, someone that would kill. We won't go into the reward offered for information on you. All of us had to duck and hide plenty during that time. This isn't like that. We have to worry, no doubt there, but we know the players and what to watch for. And if it takes me getting us bodyguards to shadow us whenever we leave the house, I will, Harry. We'll be safe and get out, don't worry.”“We will, it'll just take time,” Harry said softly, mostly for himself. After lifting his head, he kissed Sirius softly. When he broke it off, he observed, “You've been smoking again.” He knew about the habit and that Sirius indulged when he was stressed, so he figured where it was coming from.“Yeah,” Sirius admitted with a groan. “It's helping.” That's where he left it, figuring Harry understood.Though Harry didn't like it, or the smell that came along with the habit, he nodded. With a bit of an evil grin, he admitted, “Marissa sent along some of Humboldt's finest with me. For stress and to help Remus. It's not illegal over here, you know. We could go upstairs and smoke a joint. It might make all of us feel better.”A huge grin on his face, shoulders shaking, Sirius snorted, “Leave it to her! I knew she sneaked it to Remus once a month and he used it, though he huffed about it being illegal, I just didn't know she or you did!”“Once in a while,” Harry admitted with a sheepish grin and a shrug. “Since it's not illegal here and she labeled it as a potions ingredient in the kit we have, it wouldn't have gotten us in trouble if we were caught with it. Even in the States it's used as one, you're just not allowed to smoke it.”Shoulders shaking, Sirius shook his head then said, sounding completely amused, “You know, I think that's a good idea. Let me go grab Remus and we'll share. He'll huff and pretend like he doesn't approve, but will join us. It'll be a good way to relax.” Pulling Harry into a kiss, he said, “Go find it and I'll grab the stuffy one. Well, and make sure the elves know to prepare for a munchies attack.”“This should be interesting,” Harry laughed, standing. While it wasn't something they did before, he thought it might help relax them, what with all the stress going on. If nothing else, they'd end up having a few very interesting discussions. With a groan, he stretched, then headed up to their room to find the kit. Hopefully, he would feel better after indulging and it would calm him down. Not to mention Sirius. They all needed something, really, and this might do the trick.
